The game veers just slightly away from being sim to drive more directly towards being fun.
The Life is an innovative addition to the genre that indicates to me that Sony is serious about sports games again.
Sony took a year off from the NBA scene. Unfortunately, it seems like they could have used another year with NBA 06.
The graphic engine and framerate really fail the gameplay engine, which had some very nice controller setup.
While NBA '06 featuring “The Life, Volume 1” is not revolutionary at the core, I personally believe more immersive experiences like this are the way sports gaming is headed. I’m very excited for it.
The online is decent if you can stomach the gameplay enough to get into it; and the mini-games do offer some fun diversions. But “The Life” is undercut by poor fundamentals and the restrictive nature of the animations and controls.
Bottom line: this is a bad basketball game. The last Sony-published hoops title, NBA ShootOut 2004, was extremely solid, so these massive leaps backwards befuddle me to no end.
