Can Spidey avoid getting clobbered by two of Doc Ock's metallic appendages while avoiding the other two? The gameplay of this sequel, unlike that of the straightforward, mostly linear original, lends itself much more to the sense of freedom and exploration made popular with "Grand Theft Auto III." I honestly can’t fathom going back to driving a car in the next installment of "Grand Theft Auto" – the world is just so much cooler when you can explore the whole city, meaning everything up in the air as well. Manhattan becomes a giant jungle gym for Spider-Man to play in, and it is a blast.
  2. Using the simple control dynamics to soar through a living, breathing, virtual New York City is as much fun and exhilarating as watching it on the big screen.

The game's integral factors ascend above the fray, giving players a huge, multifaceted game that's rich in skill-based gameplay and replay value. It's fat with a massive array of challenges, and it delivery a distinct Spider-Man style of fun previously unmatched in the action genre.
  4. Other than its generic mission objectives and/or uninteresting sounds (including a poor attempt at camp humor) Spider-Man 2 delivers the goods and has legs to last well beyond the summer of 2004.

Choose to ignore the plot and the side missions if you like; the hidden races, the token hunts and the tremendous feeling to be had from simply exploring, swinging and crawling about the city are more than enough to justify purchase.
  6. While Spider-Man 2 truly puts you in the webbed booties of the wall-crawler and boasts a ton of freedom to do what you want, there's not enough variety to keep things fresh from start to finish.

Probably the worst game of the year, and definitely on my top 20 worst games ever. It was truly disappointing. The bottom line here is that the game was severely rushed.

This is exactly what I want from not just Spider-Man, but also every other comic book superhero. In other words, this game is a free-roaming game that allows you to roam around New York City, do story missions, and fight crime (basically a superhero Grand Theft Auto). I'm surprised that the only other superheroes who've followed this formula are Batman (Batman: Arkham City), and Hulk (Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction). Of course, the question on everyone's mouths is this. Is this idea well executed? The answer is yes. As a matter of fact, it's not only executed well, it's executed perfectly! It really does feel like a superhero Grand Theft Auto. There are several missions for not only the story, but also jobs such as delivering Pizza, and taking pictures for the Daily Bugle. Along with that, in New York City itself, there are plenty of different crimes to fight. They can be anything from saving a person from falling, to stopping an armored car robbery. The control of this game is excellent. It really makes you feel like you're Spider-Man. This is another important thing I think about when playing a superhero game. The control has to make you feel like the hero that you're playing as, and this game does that perfectly too. As for the graphics, they're decent but not perfect. I've seen far better graphics, but I've also seen far worse. The story is pretty much the same as the movie that it's based on, but expanded with extra characters. As a matter of fact, the only thing about this game that I don't like is the voice acting which is flat out terrible. Aside from that, this entire game is amazing, and is overall one of the best superhero games I've ever played (if not the best). Expand

Great game, I can remember shelling out hours upon hours outside of the story mode because that's how much I enjoyed the freedom to move out and about unlike the first Spider-Man (which was also a great game). Seeing as my PS2 died several years ago, I might consider getting another just to play this again and bring back the nostalgia. Awesome game. Expand

I'd like to give this game a negative review, considering I really dislike Treyarch, but I believe the early Spider-Man games and Tony HawkI'd like to give this game a negative review, considering I really dislike Treyarch, but I believe the early Spider-Man games and Tony Hawk games are the only things that they've ever really done right. Spider-Man 2 follows the story line of the movie it's based off, but it also allows the player a lot of freedom to explore the map, stop crimes that occur, and collect items.

The graphics were beautiful and the gameplay makes you feel like you're Spider-Man in a way similar to how Arkham Asylum makes you feel like Batman (though not nearly as awesome). This game is really good, even still. Get it if you missed out back when it was released. It's worth a try.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Most movie tie in games feel rushed but spider-man 2 for the PlayStation 2 does not feel very rushed. Okay so the best thing about this game is Bruce Campbell he does an amazing job as the narrator. The swinging is also amazing. The combat is good, the bosses are great and story is really good too. The side missions are boring that is a problem. Spider-man 2 for the ps2 is a great game I recommend it to anyone who has not played it. Expand

Let me elaborate, the controls are some of the worst I've ever seen in any game, the story isn't special at all with average voice acting, and average looking character models. Everyone praises the web swinging when in actuality its very frustrating to get around the city. You are forced to collect a certain amount of "Hero Points" to progress through the story which wouldn't be that bad if you didn't have to collect 2000 - 4000 of them each chapter. Combat is average at best and extremely frustrating at worst. Overall Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 is a below average game. I don't recommend it at all. Expand
