Disgaea 4 is a noteworthy edition to the popular strategy RPG series because it adds so much new content without destroying the familiar gameplay that fans have grown to love.

In the end, Disgaea 4 is simply the finest expression of everything that the Disgaea series is.

Disgaea 4 is still Disgaea, but better, improved and with a very welcomed graphical update. Tons of systems and subsystems focused on creating a crazy sandbox where the rules exist to be broken. Add a really good story, charming characters and the, as usual, excellent soundtrack and you have a fantastic entry into the series.

Fans will love it for everything it is, while detractors will ignore it for all that it isn't. This is a game, and series, that isn't out to win over gamers by changing its stripes -- though its fans probably wouldn't have it any other way.
  5. 80
The funniest and best-looking entry in the series so far, but also the least innovative and accessible in terms of gameplay.

Disgaea 4 has a clear sense of self and it embraces all of its absurdities, presenting them in a surprisingly palatable package, whether you choose just to get your feet wet or dive all the way into the brimming time sink.
  7. 50
The many layers of mechanics are simply too obscure if you haven't played the predecessors to death. Possibly the most complex game in the tactical RPG genre to date, but we just wish the developers had spent as much energy on introducing and explaining the mechanics as they did tailoring the game to existing fans.

This is definitely the best entry in the series and the dev team has pulled out all the stops. I have played the entire series and know its faults and strengths and they really outdid themselves. The music is top notch, extremely memorable with a lot of new tracks as well as the inclusion of many beloved classics from earlier titles. The game has a new crisp sprite as well as the ability to change the graphics back to the old style so you can get the classic disgaea visual experience if you want. The balance has been worked on and you can now expect some challenge from the base game instead of special combo blitzing your enemies. The dialogue has real heart and the humor is top notch, expect to be grinning like an idiot at the very least as you play! If not laughing out loud at some of the better jokes. The English voice acting is the best I can say I have heard from any game! And I said that about disgaea 3 also. The disgaea series is one of the few I can safely say has better voice acting than the Japanese originals, and that's coming from a Japanese anime fan!

This game is just perfect.. its got a simple learning curve for newcomers, a great tutorial and I could not recommend it any more to old fans and newcomers to the genre alike, as well as anime fans! (you will find lots of in jokes and references from anime and video games in there too, flawlessly delivered.)
