Still, in the end, Lumines is a great game to play. The basic gameplay is solid and addictive, and the skins are mesmerizing in both sound and visuals, blending with the gameplay to create a hypnotic experience.
It's one of the best downloadable values on the PlayStation Network - this game is packed with content and you can easily spend dozens of hours exploring all that it has to offer.
Play it right and it builds into a hypnotically rhythmic blur of colour and sound. [Mar 2009, p.91]
Lumines Supernova is a solid package that offers a great amount of variety, thanks to its many game modes. The lack of online play is sadly the only issue in a game where the hard difficulty settings are the main dish for all the veterans. We have seen all this before, but it still simply rocks.
Although the new toys fail to entirely justify themselves - and if you can forgive the absence of online options, and look past what many perceive as the heresy of playing the game on anything other than a handheld - Lumines Supernova is probably the fullest incarnation of the game yet available.
While I think that anyone with a reasonable level of interest in puzzle or rhythm games should absolutely own Lumines, there's really no good reason to collect them all. If you've somehow managed to dodge the series until now, Supernova's a fine place to start. But as someone that's been playing it since it was originally released on the PSP in Japan, I got tired of it almost immediately.
