In so many ways, on many levels, Renegade Ops is one of the most refreshingly enthusiastic action games of the year.

Reminds us a video game doesn't need much to be fun. Give us a war machine and stuff to blow up and we'll soon be enjoying ourselves. This operation looks great and provides lots of amusing, '80s action movie thrills.

In this top-down twin-stick shooter everything, from tanks to trains, has to be destroyed. And you know what? As simple as that may sound, it is a lot of fun. [Nov 2011, p.96]

Explosive combat and terrific controls make Renegade Ops a great vehicular dual-stick shooter.

Are you looking for an arcade title where you can blow up buildings and kill countless of enemies in a campaign mode that will take around six hours to complete? Do you love screen filling explosions? If the answer is yes to both questions, then look no further, because Renegade Ops is just the right game for you.

Okay, so it's short and a bit repetitive, but you do get to blow a hell of a lot of stuff up.

A brief hit of retro goodness that loses its enchantment all too soon. If you're looking for a demanding blast from the past, Renegade Ops will sort you out for a week or two; just don't expect to be playing it for much longer than that.

Avalanche Studios, the company that also brought you the insanely fun Just Cause games, brings you Renegade Ops.

It's such an incredible gem of a game which combines the best of so many classic, tried and true games such as; Jakal, Choplifter, Blast Corps, Smash TV, Iron Tank and adds so much more to the mix.

The twin-stick shooting action here is great. The vehicles have a nice sense of speed and are so much fun to control.
I sometimes found myself just enjoying cruising along, taking crazy jumps, and doing donuts in the sand.

Crashing your vehicle through small buildings sends little bits of highly detailed debris flying everywhere and is such a great and powerful feeling. If you enjoyed that part of Blast Corps, you'll absolutely love it here!

The controls are tight, the graphics and sounds are incredibly detailed, and the voice acting is purposely campy...think Starship Troopers.

At certain points in the game you will switch from your "cruiser tank" to a helicopter and the game takes on a bit of a shoot-em-up (SHMUP) feeling while still being very much on point with the rest of the game.

The power-up system here is incredibly well designed. There are several types of both weapon and defensive upgrades available here, with each one being very different from the others. It was fun to mix and match the different types as well as max them out for the most fire power and defensive protection.

There are also different characters you can choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses as well.

I played the entire campain mode with a friend on the other side of the country and it was perfectly smooth and responsive at all times. Soon after that I played the entire campaign all over again on my own to ace each level, save all hostages, etc. Both times were so much fun to play. Renegade Ops is easily one of the best shooters (SHMUPs) I've ever played.

**Also, fans of the classic arcade game Smash TV should be on the lookout for a hidden easter egg in which pays tribute to that game.

I highly recommend Renegade Ops, along with its 2 level DLC pack. I hope that some day Avalache Studios can make a follow up game to this, or at the very least release this on current gen consoles so more people can experience how great of a game it is.

Point scoring is a big thing in this game which you can boost by rescuing prisoners taking as little damage as possible and keeping the score multipliers as high and as long as possible which are scored at the end of a mission and a rating given which range from poor to alien. Secondary weapons come in the form of missiles, rockets flamethrower and rail gun you'll find all very effective in the art of destruction as well as the the machine gun you have mounted you can get this upgraded for a bit of extra punch.the only niggles this game has is not many up grades for the guns and upgrades are pretty much the same for all but prioritised differently not really that varied. This game in short is Metal Slug but overhead, to put it simply if you loved Metal Slug than you will love this. Very fun game. I didn't have many complaints except that the levels are too long, while this game should be played in short burtst. It's funVery fun game. I didn't have many complaints except that the levels are too long, while this game should be played in short burtst. It's fun to play with two player BUT, when XP is seperate so if one player is not as good as the other, the best player will always have the best weapons and upgrades and then be even more behind his friend. Maybe that's fair but it's not fun at all if your not as good at it. Expand

Horrible mistake on my part. It is an entertaining game for the first 2 hours then is just plain repititive and boring. Anyone looking for a top down twin stick shooter could get either a better bang for their buck on PSN or could buy COD black ops for about $20 and play the unlockable zombie arcade. I would give this game a little higher score if it were cheaper but $15 for a short 3 hour campaign with little variety is a rip off. Unless you're a huge fan of top down shooters (which i am) DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. Expand
