I did not know a thing of Cage’s work prior to reviewing Beyond: Two Souls, but the excellent storytelling, the spot-on acting and the technical prowess that explodes out of the PlayStation 4 has made me a huge fan instantly.

Beyond: Two Souls is back on PlayStation 4 with an enhanced graphic and the same interesting and emotional story, representing a great opportunity for those who didn’t play it two years ago on PS3.

Beyond: Two Souls is still an intriguing piece of digital narrative. It has some plot flaws, but living Jodie's story in the new straight order is refreshing, and some of the improved visual effects are mesmerizing.

Beyond has its ups and downs, and this version doesn't really improve that. The visuals get slightly better and the whole experience gets tweaked, but nothing relevant if you already played it.

For me the most important feature of this remaster is the inclusion of the optional chronological mode. It makes the story a bit less flashy but way easier to comprehend. [01/2016, p.65]

This two year old adventure looks great on PS4. And with the addition of playing the episodes in chronological order this is clearly the best version of Beyond. Nonetheless some of the old basic problems remain.

The visuals still impress, but for a game obsessed with storytelling at all costs the dopey plot and underwritten characters in no way make up for the lack of gameplay.

From what I've read its either "I hate it" or "I love it" and for me I can definitely say: I love it! Its one of the best games I ever played. I still can't decide if "The Last of Us" has the best story or "Beyond: Two Souls".
I think due to this story its even better than "Heavy Rain". Don't get me wrong "Heavy Rain" was awesome but "Beyond: Two Souls" takes it to another universe. I sincerely hope "Beyond: Two Souls" will have a remastered version for whatever console we will have in 50 years because it would be a shame to miss this title in the future!

Thank you "trumstah" for the following words I could not have expressed my feelings better:
!!! To the people behind this emotional tycoon that instantly makes you reminisce your time spent in the world upon completion. I applaud you. I respect you. I urge you, bring us back to this world. I truly hope that I can revisit this landscape someday. Thank you for giving me this experience. !!!

I will never forget the experience I had with this game.

I started the game in it's native form and did not chose the chronological sequence which I now regret. The game is rather immersive however the constant flip in gameplay and timeline unfortunately dampens immersion. This is not affecting my score as chronological mode can be selected. This game is very unique and I've not played anything like it to date. There are some absolutely groundbreaking sequences and some frustrating ones also however the pros outweigh the cons. I'd recommend playing this game for lovers of story dominating games. Expand

Beyond: Two Souls is a great but flawed and under-rated adventure sci-fi game. A great concept in theory which was badly executed.

Beyond: Two Souls is a choice-based, narrative-driven adventure game, where your choices affect the story and lead to multiple endings, just like all those Traveller's Tales games (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, etc.). Some people will call it an "interactive movie" but they'd be wrong. This game is intended to be experienced by both gamers and non-gamers, so it lacks any real challenge or traditional videogame action.

The game's story on the original PS3 version was presented in a non-linear way, where events were shown with many backs and forths through time, so people may have been confused back then. On PS4 you have the option to watch the story unfold in a chronological way, and I believe this is the way new players should experience it.

The game tells the life story of protagonist Jodie Holmes (portrayed by Ellen Page), who's a really likeable and sympathetic character. Jodie has suffered a hard life because she has been linked with a ghost named Aiden since birth, which is both a gift and a curse. She has been raised by professor Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe) and then her life journey becomes a crazy roller coaster. The plot has twists and turns, as well as high and low points, but I think David Cage (the game's writer and director) should have kept it more down to Earth. The "Homeless" chapter is beautiful and emotional, but when Jodie blowed a town up or was made to fight against supernatural beings, the script went the BS route. The overall plot is a sci-fi mess with many unrelated chapters being linked together with little or no transitioning, unfortunately.

Gameplay is simplified compared to most games out there and QTEs are nothing like the mess of the developer's previous game Heavy Rain. Interactivity with the surroundings is severely limited though. Controls and the camera are problematic, but the game is slowly paced so the problem is almost non-existent. The ghost named Aiden provides some meaningful ways to interact with the environment and solve some light puzzles, but he's a lost opportunity because he's under-utilised by David Cage. Also Aiden's capabilities are very inconsistent, on one instance he can pass through walls and choke people, and on another it's not possible to do so, all due to the script. At least the game can be played in 2 player co-op, with one controlling Jodie and the other Aiden.

Production values are very high for an adventure game like this, with Hollywood stars Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe starring in the lead roles. All the characters are rendered beautifully, at the expense of the environments though which feature noticeably low polygon counts and shadow pop-ins. The soundtrack is very good.

All in all, Beyond: Two Souls was a failed experiment for David Cage and Quantic Dream. It proved to be a big mis-step after the success of Heavy Rain, but hopefully they have learnt from their mistakes since then.
