    I bought a PS4 pro for two reasons: so I could play visual-geared games in 4K and enjoy higher framerates for fast-paced games. This has neither of these. In 4K mode, you're looking at maybe 15 fps . It's horrible. In performance mode (which is a measly 1080p) , you get 20-30 fps. It's    Nearly unplayable in its current state. I will update this score if they put out a good patch.

    In addition to this, huge input lag and audio issues (no, it's not my monitor. i booted up another ps4 game on the same monitor and had zero issues). I can't hear characters that are in front of me, only all around me. It's insane.

Those issues will be fixed, but that doesn't solve another massive problem: the forced horizontal split screen. Why tf would they make the decision to get rid of vertical split screen when anyone playing this game is going to have an HD rectangular TV and not an old POS box?Couch co-op, one of the best things about this series, is absolutely unplayable.     I'm going to save you the trouble of looking for relevant reviews. Skip the good ones. This game is fundamentally broken and has an insane amount of bugs, the quantity of which, is unacceptable for a 'Triple-A' release. The bugs include (and are not limited to) falling through the map, launching skyward in vehicles when colliding with objects, placeholder text appearing on screen, vendorsI'm going to save you the trouble of looking for relevant reviews. Skip the good ones. This game is fundamentally broken and has an insane amount of bugs, the quantity of which, is unacceptable for a 'Triple-A' release. The bugs include (and are not limited to) falling through the map, launching skyward in vehicles when colliding with objects, placeholder text appearing on screen, vendors not telling you the price of a full ammo restock, intense frame-rate drops when opening anything that could be classified as a menu, repeating ECHO-Tapes in split screen mode, and worst of all, the hud size is so small that only an ant could read it without eye-strain. All of these bugs were observed during my time playing the game, and I have not included any bugs that I myself, did not encounter, this is to bring further credibility to this review. Just note that the listed bugs are likely the tip of the iceberg.
    If you can look past the bugs and performance issues, its a solid game and has been fun to play when we actively try to ignore these issues. The loot drops are more satisfying, and areas are filled with collectibles and hidden locations that make exploring fun. The classes are very enjoyable as well, and all work extremely well in conjunction with one another, this in turn, makes the fast paced combat addicting and exciting for the whole party. The storyline is very disappointing, at last in terms of how my friends and I have gotten, as there isn't much context given as to exactly what we're doing or what our ultimate goal is. This is in stark contrast to the previous entries that made such goals apparent at the start of the game. Example: BL1 was to find and open the vault, BL2 was to kill Handsome Jack, BL3 is....a mess. This is subject to change late-game, but for now, I am personally unimpressed.
    In conclusion, I would recommend this game to potential buyers, but not until each major issue is fixed, and the support for vertical split screen is added. The game is terrible in its current state, and despite the impressive gameplay, its borderline unplayable on the Playstation 4 at the time of this review.    … Expand

    Long-time fan of the series. Bought for the co-op. Unplayable due tiny text, lag, lack of vertical option. If you’re looking forward to play couch co-op with friends, DO NOT BUY THIS until a patch comes out.

    Long time fan of Borderlands. I have played through all of them dozens of times with my wife. Sadly, I'm not sure if it will be possible with this installment. The game is unplayable. Super laggy. Text too small. Inventory bugs. Vending machines suck. No vertical split screen. Very very disappointing.

Its really hard to read the menus and on screen text, only played 2 hours and encountered 3 visual bugs such as gun stat menus staying on screen after picking up a weapon and my aim mysteriously moving skyward all on its own.     Made account just to trash this game. Local co-op mode is simply not playable currently. Game is clunky, laggy, freezes up if someone opens a menu, and split screen is horizontal only, making everything ultra tiny and impossible to read. We gave up after 30 minutes.

Found out quickly that the developers made the astonishing choice to only include horizontal co-op, which is near unplayable on a widescreen tv. The Borderlands franchise has stood apart from many games being one of the few that really does couch co-op very well. We won't be playing this until we hear more about whether the developers plan to restore this critical element. Big let down on this $100 pre-order. The excitement we had for jumping into the story together right at launch has been effectively nullified.
    The game itself is very enjoyable from the little that we've played, separately... I would have otherwise given this game an excellent review if this core element from the other games had been included, but as it is in contrast to the other games, BL3 is incomplete.    … Expand

    Huge slowdown with every move of the menu, the massive slowdown at all times. With how often you're hopping into menus it's unacceptable that the games split-screen launched like this.     Well that was disappointing. After a carefully curated and tightly controlled pre-release expectations were running high. Tiny text, laggy co-op, and no vertical split screen! I know couch co-op is not for everyone, but for those who play with a partner this series has become the go to. The issue was known about, but the response so far has been ...well there hasn't been.     If, like me you were excited about returning to the franchise for the co-op elements then don't be.     My son and I have played through all of the previous Borderlands in "couch co-op* and loved them. How in the world could they have dropped the ball on the best mode of gameplay for this game? The story, graphics, etc are great but since the co-op is forced horizontal split screen, it makes this game unplayable.     The lack of vertical split-screen, laggy af game play, and a general lack of foresight from the devs has made this $100+ purchase a very regrettable one. I never thought a Borderlands game could leave me this upset, but here we are.

    It's got really bad frame rate issues, it's sluggish the menus lag , pop in textures on the odd occasion , it's actually giving me eye strain and I've only played for an hour

    If you have a regular PS4 (not pro) forget about buying this game! 20-22 fps its unplayable... I wish I knew before spending 70$!

    If you're a fan of the series you will absolutely love this! It's everything you'd expect, with small little tweaks here and there to improve some of the downsides of the old games. As for framerate drops, just change the performance on visuals to prefer FPS, then it's smooth as butter!

    The Pros: Despite pretty severe lag, especially if one person opens up their menu, couch co-op is still fun, even in spite of the horizontal screen split. The combat is fun for the first fifteen hours, and the types of guns to experiment with is insane; I didn't even realize until the last    I finally forced myself to finish this game, so months late but at least I slogged through it.

    The Pros: Despite pretty severe lag, especially if one person opens up their menu, couch co-op is still fun, even in spite of the horizontal screen split. The combat is fun for the first fifteen hours, and the types of guns to experiment with is insane; I didn't even realize until the last boss fight that 'Adaptive' guns stick an alien parasite on the front. Some jokes also land pretty well, and the game still has the chaotic fun of the previous entries.

    The Cons: This might be the most repetitive game I've ever played. Literally you will be fighting the same enemies throughout the entire game, and since they scale as you level, there will literally be no difference in fights. Boss fights and quests are pretty unimaginative once you dig beneath the surface, and the writing gets old fast. The jokes don't seem as smart as the first two; the punchline for 50% of the jokes is literally about turds. That feeds into another problem in this game, which is just lazy writing. They constantly just fall back on jokes instead of trying to do any character progression or storytelling. You find out about the main villains' motivations in the 11th hour of the game, and it's such a pointless, stupid reveal that you just shrug. I found myself praying for the game to end for the last five hours, only to land in a new map that I barely bothered to explore--because why should I? The baddies are the same everywhere, and at a certain point, the sheer volume of basic guns thrown at your face also makes the experience pointless.

    Conclusion: The game's basic formula just hasn't aged well over the past decade. It's like we all grew up, and Borderlands didn't bother. They just rinse-repeat the same bad guys, the same combat, the same juvenile jokes, even the level layouts are the same--so that every shootout feels like you've been there before. They even keep dragging along the same NPCs throughout the game, which is fine for nostalgia's sake, but at a certain point, why even bother?    … Expand

    Been addicted to Borderlands since the first game. The only one I never got into was the pre sequel. I am having just as difficult a time getting into this one. The 2 main villains are absolutely cringe worthy but even ignoring that I still can't seem to get into this. I had such high hopes too.

    As someone who has finished all the borderlands games with almost all the available characters, I can say that this is just another Borderlands game. That's not a bad thing. It has some improvements in many areas, but fundamentally it's the same borderlands. Feels the exact same.     First, i have to complement the game's mechanics. Borderlands 3 is a shooter-looter (the series literally pioneered the concept) and the    Borderlands 3 is ultimately a disappointing game. I've experienced every title in the series across multiple platforms, and i can safely say that the conclusion of the main trilogy is a mixed bag that gets some things right and others very, very wrong.

    First, i have to complement the game's mechanics. Borderlands 3 is a shooter-looter (the series literally pioneered the concept) and the shooting and looting has never been better. Combat is immensely satisfying and visceral. I chose Moze the Gunner for my playthrough and had a blast (no pun intended) as I slaughtered my way through entire groups of enemies with my mech, which I steadily upgraded over time into a complete juggernaut. The different gun manufacturers all look, behave, and feel very different from one another and you'll quickly find your favorites. Small tweaks have also been made to combat such as a power slide, ground slam, and the ability to grab and climb ledges. My favorite though has to be the ragdoll physics that can occur when an enemy gets hit with a shotgun blast or explosion.

    The gameplay of Borderlands 3 is complemented by its impressive loot, which is to say you're absolutely drowned in new weapons, grenade mods, shields, etc. at a constant basis. It can be heartbreaking to have to give up a gun you really love due to finding a better one at a higher level, but at least the game never feels stagnant. There's also an abundance of legendary weapons and gear, much of which is referential to other games and elements of pop culture.

    Sadly, however, this is where the glowing praise ends because outside of the fun and improved gameplay elements, Borderlands 3 misses the mark entirely. If you're a fan of the series like I am, you don't just come to Borderlands for the shooting and looting. There's an overabundance of games available that feature fun shooter gameplay and an addictive loot grind. Half of the appeal of Borderlands comes from its uniqueness, writing, style, and personality. It's the "soul" that brings the excellent gameplay to life. That soul has all but disappeared.

    Storywise, Borderlands 3 is basically The Last Jedi for the franchise. There's an blatant agenda focused around female empowerment that is constant throughout the entire experience, up to and including an absolutely cringeworthy ending. The female characters are almost exclusively the main focus of the game, both heroes and villains, especially an obnoxious and detestable Mary Sue character named Ava. Almost very male main character in the game is either inconsequential, a blithering idiot, gay, or ends up dying.

    Borderlands 3 also treats established characters the way The Last Jedi did: It ruins the ones you love in favor of replacing them with new ones with no substance then tries to get you to care about them. Characters from previous games are treated like garbage if they even show up at all. Vaugn and Rhys are made into clowns, Lilith is helpless and sad, and Brick, Mordecai, and Tina barely show up at all. One character in particular gets such a dishonorable and pathetic death for such a contrived reason that I almost wanted to stop playing the game because of it. More politics is shoved in with one new character expressing the desire to become trans in an audio log and Hammerlock getting a boyfriend with every other line they have together being about their relationship. Also worth mentioning is that half of the established cast fails to show up whatsover. No one outside of Vaugn and Rhy from Tales is there. Axton, Gaige, Kriege, and Salvador are gone. Even Dr. Zed is nowhere to be found. He's been a mainstay in every main entry and he's just not nonexistent. He's never even brought up at all by anyone else, either. It's a damn shame.

    The humor in Borderlands 3 is mildly entertaining at best and painful at worst. Unfunny one-note jokes pepper the dialogue in a way that makes it seem like the script was written by 13-year-old Tumblr bloggers. A few bits are genuinely funny, but not much else. It's sad how the quality of the writing has deteriorated since Anthony Burch left. Bottom line: Don't expect hilarity or meaningful character development from Borderlands 3 because you definitely won't get it. It's truly as bad as the rest of the internet says it is.

    Glitches aren't what they used to be, but they still exist. Texture pop-in and subtitle bugs were the most notable, although I did have to restart due to a quest enemy getting stuck in a wall and the game has hard crashed once in my 30 or so hours of playtime.

    Borderlands 3 is a fun missed opportunity. The gameplay and mechanics have improved, but all of the personality has been sucked out, leaving an enjoyably addictive but disappointing experience for fans. There are plenty of good times to be had, but it's definitely not what it should have been.    … Expand

    Worst Borderlands game by far. The humor is terrible and not what it once was, and the characters are often cringy and feel lazily added to the storyline. The antagonists are pretty bad in my opinion and the variety of side quests are also abysmal. Mostly just a forgettable game.

    The technical state of this game is horrendous. Almost unplayable in splitscreen on base ps4. Constantly loading and deloading textures, even reticles have lowpixel versions! Textures deload to lowpoly when you turn your back against them. The game crashes often, leaving you to the longest loading screen with assclap dancing in a total silence which makes you want to delete the game right away due to cringe overload. Frame rate is pretty bad, worst is on vertical split screen. When opening the menu, the game freezes for a few seconds. Every text in this game is so tiny you have to lean towards the screen to read the stats. Some texts are so microscopic that they don't have enough pixels to be readable.

    Borderlands 3 at least doesn't force you to complete side quests in order to be able to play the main mission on a decent difficulty unlike the older games which is probably the only improvement in this game. Edge climbing, slides and ground slams are pretty close to useless.

    If you want to play a Borderlands game (or a "split screen game with your friend") you should definitely try one of the older ones since they are in so much better technical conditions rather than this cringe-emanating piece of craptlap with more coital/coomer "jokes" than jokes.    … Expand

    What an average offering. Yes, the graphics and sound effects are better, and maybe even the gameplay is better, but the writing, characters, and voice acting are easily the worst of the series. The guns are interesting but not enough so that it's worth slogging through the same areas fighting the same enemies over and over again. DLC might make the game more interesting but the developers would have to do a full 180 from their release product to pull this off and I don't see them putting in that kind of effort. The CEO and review debacles aside, the fan community was looking forward to a decent game and B3 just feels like a Kickstarter that lost the love. So many punches got pulled here, especially towards the end of the game where main characters die only to be met with a quick one mission "dialogue mourning period" before its back to poop jokes and repetitive dialogue.     So, it's been a while since I've written a review and after replaying one of my most playable games of all time--Borderlands 2 and it's subsequent last DLC, and with the experience still fresh in my mind, all I can say about Borderlands 3 is...

    It's meh. The game doesn't even bother to set up the story properly as you're thrown into the game with nary a reason to any of the new Vault    So, it's been a while since I've written a review and after replaying one of my most playable games of all time--Borderlands 2 and it's subsequent last DLC, and with the experience still fresh in my mind, all I can say about Borderlands 3 is...

    It's meh.

    The game doesn't even bother to set up the story properly as you're thrown into the game with nary a reason to any of the new Vault Hunters being on Pandora. Not only this but mainstays like Tannis or Moxxi, show up over your Echo to tell you to collect this or knockdown that. Look, I get that you know we all remember who these people are, the Vault Hunter though...has NO clue who any of these people are and just kinda goes along with it? If you're going to be lazy with setting up the game, don't expect us to think all the highly of the experience.

    I know there several technical issues out, but my grievances are in the QoL realm. Here are just some:

    ~Font size and color. Why did you go with condensed, tiny font against generally dark backgrounds? Do you know how many times I lose the damn option to open a box because the font just disappears into the aether? BL2 had big old white fonts, you can see them all the time.

    ~Why am I forced to hold down the action button to fast travel? At least make it an option.

    ~Targeting/hitboxes are so unbelievably tiny in comparison to BL2 that I can lose entire clips by being a fraction of a hair off. In the early game, this becomes near game-breaking as some guns empty a whole clip and can empty your full ammo amount in less than a minute of firing, leaving you more often than not, with no ammo left.

    ~The lack of in-game badass ranks is a massive downer because leveling up means nothing more than more HP and a talent, which by the way, PUNISHES players due to NOT having any of those vital quirks available in actual play. Getting little choices to upgrade recoil reduction or gun damage helped bridge levels and growth of the character, while talent trees were dedicated solely to spec and style. Were are at the whim of the trees alone, and if you're early level to maybe middling level, you're screwed. In fact, some guns outright are a death sentence to use. Try using a shotgun with base damage, low mags, slow reloads, and no buffs? And some classes rely on that weapon! Just open up the badass ranks to the story!

    ~Enemies are disgusting bullet sponges, or Gun damage is majorly undertooled. Just from simple bandits of equal level or one up on down from current, I have guns that have a dmg output of 7 or 9 with a clip of 19. I can quickly pump an entire two clips into one bandit just to take them down, and that's including crits. That gun has max ammo of what? 340? And each bandit without missing is taking nearly 40 bullets to kill? And every gun is like this. I didn't actually start to enjoy myself until I got a Tangarine pistol with fire damage around level 9 and even then, ammo is so scarce I'm more concerned about conservation rather than ENJOYING THE GAME I'M PLAYING!!

    ~The niche, but self-aware, smart humor of the previous games is gone here as it's become more mean-spirited and crude. I get tastes change, but this devolved to a miserable state. Delivery and cadence of lines are gone. I know there's a new actor for Claptrap, but the one thing that made Claptrap great was automated, never ceasing positive delivery of lines. He didn't emote, he couldn't! This version does. It's like he got the emotional chip as Data did, and emotional Data sucked.

    This game is just a letdown, pretty much a downstep from everything the prior did. The things BL2 did right should have been accentuated, both they weren't. Instead, it feels more akin to the devs had a chip on their shoulder when making it and it seeped into the actual game. There's no fun here, no quirky joy; just a modern-day shooter angling gameplay for a potential microtransaction system to be implemented (Oh you want badass ranks? Buy Torge BADASS COINS!!) Will I finish it? Yea, I paid for it, will I enjoy it like the past? Nope.

    *Update 10/5: I'm about finished with the story, but I wanted to tag on a few "issues" I've come across.

    ~The developers and writers are nothing more than insecure, thin-skinned, middle-aged babies, that are threatened by young people. Play the mission "ECHOnet Neutrality" and then tell me I'm wrong.

    ~The overall tone of dialogue, story, and design belabors a contempt for the player base unlike ANY Gearbox has made before. I can almost hear Randy Pitchford gleefully saying "Oh, do that, that'll piss them off." There's so much of this in this game, I don't even know where to being. It's the whole thing. It's one thing to poke fun at things, it's another to make it your business to stab your hatred into the faces of all to see.

    I don't want to see or play another Borderlands game again after this. That is the mark of just how miserable the devs made this.    … Expand

    there are some awesome side missions but most of them are really cringe and never made me laugh or even crack a smile plus there are so few of them compared to the previous titles

    there are a lot of performance issues and i played the game on the PS4 so i cant imagine whats going on on the PC version plus the game isn't that optimized which really made me mad

    i consider this a con because although i support Women's rights this game just pushed it to much and it really felt like this game really hates man and glorifies woman to much

    some of the new characters you get to choose are not that cool or original well i guess not counting fl4k hes awesome

    there is barely any endgame content and no raid boss what so ever which was a big surprise to me because they always added a raid boss for max levels

    not enough maps and most vaults you open later on are a huge disappointment

    final boss is really underwhelming and bad i really hated the fact that they could make such a better final boss like in the second one but they went with a boring looking and easy to defeat final boss

    they didn't bring back a lot of characters the community wanted them to such as Gaige axton Salvador
    Athena and many more

    they completely ignored the endings of tales of the borderlands and the end of the pre squeal games and didn't even mention the endings which are completely canon

    the main villains are just trash especially compared to handsome jack which is a legendary antagonist and is one of the main reasons why people go back to play the second game

    the new characters they introduce not counting Balex because he is awesome are just plain boring

    although they did bring back Tina Mordecai and Brick they barely included them in the main story which really pissed me off because they are the coolest characters ever also clap trap isn't used that much

    the ending was just total trash and didn't conclude anything

    pros:
    (now i know there are a lot of cons and i know a lot of people hate this game and give it really bad reviews but hear me out why its so good)

    game play is just superb they basically some how made the gun play so much cooler and fun

    the art style and graphics are just improved and somehow although the game is Cel-shaded its more detailed and just looks so much better

    the guns and the amount that you can get and how they look is just wow im just amazed about how they added 1 billion guns to the game and literally if you replay the game your guns are just gonna be so much different than your previous play through which brings me to the next point and main point

    the replay value in this game is just crazy you can easily spend 100 hours on the game or even more after they added dlc and events

    dialog is so much improved and like in the pre squeal game they added voice lines to the characters you play which kinda gives more personality to them

    there are side missions although few that are just way funny and just made me laugh all the time

    the amount of references and Easter eggs are just awesome and because of them you actually explore the map more and find new stuff
    the collectibles they added such Typhons recordings or the radio towers are a cool edition to the game they added more customization for the guns for cars and for the characters and all you have to do to unlock them is just to play the game no micro transactions no nothing there is co op and split screen and that is very rare for a game this days especially split screen mayhem mode is a cool edition to the endgame and brings more difficulty and chances to get legendary guns in conclusion as you see the story and the writing are the biggest downfall of the game but the game play is so much worth your time all the guns and the amount of fun you can have while playing with friends so my final score to Borderlands 3 is a 7 out of 10    … Expand

    I waited 8 years for borderlands 3 and I am very underwhelmed.
    It feels like a giant expansion of borderlands 2 with few new mechanics, and only one interesting/original class (which I refuse to play because EVERYONE is playing it).
    The story is dookie, and the humor is very lackluster, shame.

    Then borderlands 3 comes out, I was excited about the game enough to pre-order it so I could pre download it. Launch day comes and... disappointment... disappointment nearly everywhere.

    Now I will confess I am a PC gamer, so maybe its because I play on PC and therefore I am use to higher framerates, but jumping jesus Christ, I swear bloodborne has a more steady and higher framerate than this game does.

    So say you are a fan of the borderlands series, what would you say is one of the most important things about playing a borderlands game... Are you a fan of handsome jack and think story is important? Or do you want to get the top quality loot to kill things even faster? Well what if I said just being about to shoot basic enemies would be a good start. Thats right, this game has such low FPS (frame per second) and such high input lag (I guess anywhere from .5-1.5 seconds) that shooting enemies is nearly impossible. I have a better chance of firing from the hip and moving left and right than aiming down any sight whatsoever. Snipers, assault rifles, SMG, pistols, anything with a scope is useless because as soon as you aim your FPS drops even worse than the game normally plays at, adding in the input lag, and your better off just using melee to kill enemies.

    Well maybe that just me right, maybe I have just **** luck or even just a **** player, which the second isnt true as I am a borderlands veteran and have done basically anything I can in 2 and pre sequal. But maybe shooting isnt everything right, the games have always about making you feel like a badass, by making each character broken in their unique way...

    Well that isnt true for Amara (the siren character) which is the first and probably only character I will play. Maya was the siren in Borderlands 2 and was one of my favorites to play. Able to deal large amounts of status effects (fire, shock, corrosive, slag), lock enemies is stasis allowing your team to deal with them, healing teammates ect.

    All I have seen with Amara's skills are special ability (I chose the one in the shock tree which sends a projection of myself in a straight line to deal damage) and basically every skill I dont even notice during combat. I got a skill allowing me to gain "rush" stacks by killing enemies or inflicting them with a status effect, which boosts my ultimate damage (if you can hit the damn thing with the low fps). Every other skill I see in the tree doesnt even begin to fill me with excitement. Its all boring crap you would skip over in other trees. Its things like "gain more accuracy and crit damage a few seconds after using my ult"... wow I am absolutely overjoyed, now the few times I can hit someone my damage might go up by a grand total of 5 points. I am so glad I am putting points into this. This is most of the skill I can see too, nothing has the same impact as say Maya's cloud kill (after the path) that makes you go "wow this skill is broken and I love it" . You just keep putting points in skills till hopefully something interesting opens up.

    Going back to the badass aspect of the game, some of my favorite things to do in borderlands 2 is take a prized legendary gun, and go on a rampage killing enemies as easily as I breathe oxygen. Sniping enemies with zero and getting 100k damage on a crit is satisfying as hell... Well you can say goodbye to that because that will never happen in this game. Even enemies that are on your level never die from just one hit? 1,3,5,7,10? Does it depend on the gun?

    Nope, when we are talking about how many rounds it take to down a single enemy we arent talking about single rounds, we are talking about entire magazines. Thats right, you will dump dozens of rounds into a single guy to drop them. I thought I was on a higher difficulty or something, so I checked in the setting and found I was playing on normal, which I assumed was the same difficulty as borderlands 2, the same game I mastered and can go through up to true vault hunter mode and not die in. Even knocking the difficulty down to easy doesnt help much.

    So what about the small things? Menu input lag is unreal... its UI it shouldnt take 10 seconds for my map to show up. Badasses spawn rate is way to high to low levels, and the weapons they drop are garbage... in fact, most of the weapons you find even on badasses are gray, you are lucky to get a green or even a blue rarity weapon. weapon stats text can get stuck or be unreadable due to the box appearing above your camera vision.    … Expand

A smaller issue is if a tutorial for a menu item opens the obscured background actually bleeds into darkening half the other player's entire view. This won't be a potential problem for long in the game from a progress perspective but it's problematic. Another detractor is that the splitscreen is only horizontal and the UI scaling for text is absolutely terrible. Expect to squint and quickly experience headaches unless maybe you have a 100+ inch display. The instanced loot is really the only positive I can speak to for a co-op experience but trying to review your loot given the UI scaling you're going to need to be less than 3 feet from your display to read anything if playing local co-op.

    In terms of single player or network co-op the experience is decent and I don't have any complaints in my gameplay thus far. For this the UI scaling is fine and text is legible. There are FOV sliders to customize your view to your preference which is good. Honestly I don't really see the reason in complaints that BL3 isn't some massive re-invention of the franchise. It's perfectly fine to me that it's essentially more borderlands. That's what I hoped for and why I bought it.

    I'm also disappointed with the load times I've been seeing considering I've upgraded my PS4 with a large SSD so if you're still running the drive your system came with be aware load times will be even worse. Maybe a PS4 Pro with an SSD ekes out sufficient performance improvement but expect to be waiting several minutes transitioning between map zones.

    If this was a single player or network only multiplayer title, I'd probably give the game an 8 or 9 rating but that assumes couch co-op was never something the franchise supported. The fact the poorer received pre-sequel handled local co-op better than another instance in the main franchise line is a great disappointment to me.    … Expand

In this day and age people will slate it for being too much like Borderlands 2 but if it was totally different theyUpdated my review to a 10 after 24 hours gameplay.     No vertical split screen Coop is unforgivable. For those who have the same problem, setting my f.o.v. to 75 did help alot but it still sucks. Been playing all 3 originals all summer with my daughter, completely shocked when after 45 minutes of trying I realized vertical split screen is gone. I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THIS GAME HAD I KNOWN THAT. The only reason I enjoy Borderlands so muchNo vertical split screen Coop is unforgivable. For those who have the same problem, setting my f.o.v. to 75 did help alot but it still sucks. Been playing all 3 originals all summer with my daughter, completely shocked when after 45 minutes of trying I realized vertical split screen is gone. I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THIS GAME HAD I KNOWN THAT. The only reason I enjoy Borderlands so much was because the vertical splitscreen coop was so fun to play with others. With the amount of time these games take , comfort is a must when looking at the screen for so long. I can’t express how disappointed I am on the release of this game. It truly feels unfinished and rushed due to these performance and visual issues and I hope they are fixed soon. Honestly, I would stay away from this game until there is word on a patch to fix these problems. If I could, I would definitely have returned my copy until a patch was announced.     I have jitter and stutter when I set the deadzones to zero. My character literally hovers around uncontrolled which I had not in a single game before. The atmosphere is standard borderlands. If you liked the previous one probably you will like that one also. I still do miss some sort of evolution in such a game series with such an image to loose. What I dont understand is that it kinda feels like Handsome Collection 4K was actually more polished and also better looking then BL3. Only positive side note is that the sound in hifi mode is really well made and enjoyable.

    The story is very bland so far and the jokes are kinda dull also. For beginners there is the usual tutorial but in my personal opinion not very well made. The character selection itself is so paper thin you dont actually really know beforehand what you get. Of course the game is about discovering the characters and stuff but come on.... its a triple A franchise, do I really have to google for character guides before I pick something?

    I m sad that I pre-ordered and paid the full price. I think hardcore fans will enjoy the game as it is practically an expansion for BL2 without much evolution. For everyone else I would advice to wait for a price drop of at least 20-30% and some more fixes, especially if you are on base PS4 I highly suggest to not buy this game at the moment.    … Expand

    Well, this game is for the people who never played borderlands series. No point in spending 60 euros just for a better version of borderlands 2( I'm speaking about graphics improvement). If you play on PS4, you'll get fps drops almost all the time when facing a boss. My suggestion would be just to wait for a price drop and try it ( if you are passionate about this series).

This has to be fixed or else there is really no way I can proceed on this game with my partner. And we have played all the previous borderlands...

The story was underwhelming, and I found this game was not as funny as 2, and the supporting cast was weak and uninteresting, I also found myself killing so much stuff in the campaign, I always get confused after the explosions... like ok i just killed 50 bad guys, what was the objective again? I also ran into 7-8 bugs during my 30 hour playthrough of this game, all required a restart and one completely loss my playthrough, not cool. I know this is part of the game genre, but exploration does not really reward you, you're better off farming bosses and locations, just an fyi to newcomers of this series. Now all the negatives are out of the way here are the pros.
    Pros:
    -that legendary drop
    -easy, but fun, diverse bosses
    - weapon/items drop keeps game fresh
    -solid gunplay, excellent overall gameplay
    -tons of content, and that doesn't include the lengthy campaign

    It's more borderlands, but this game and genre needs to evolve. Right now this game is meant for people who like grinding for the legendary weapon or item. If the keywords rng, farming, looting, shooting,addicting, and killing is your thing..go ahead. If your keywords are story, multiplayer, innovation and graphics, pass on this game.    … Expand

    Imagine waiting 7 years for something, taking a week and a half vacation from work, waiting in line with smelly nerds for an hour at EB Games (GameStop), spending $135.60 CAD (after tax, Super Deluxe), getting a babysitter for your kids, then not even being able to play the game!     I love borderlands due to couch co op. And right now its unplayable. The type is so small you cant read anything. The only way I can see an enemy due to field of vision is when a red bar appears because I actually hit something .

    REALLY need to have vertical split screen added. Local co op is almost unplayable with horizontal split screen. It makes no sense to not have it, when its been an option in all the other games. Obviously people want it, so PLEASE add it in.

And man, the open world environment is just beautiful to behold. The very first area and the first weapons you pick up might be a little bit meh, but that's kind of par for the course with a game like this.....it starts out basic, but its not long before you start to open up some great areas and weapons.

    Each new environment you unlock is better than the last, and the weapons along with them. The gameplay is incredibly fun and satisfying, and also gets better and better as you figure out which weapons and perks you like. And ultimately what makes a game like this good.....crafting a character around your play style, fun side missions and compelling areas to explore.....this game has in spades. 10 out of 10 for me, no question. Easily as good, if not better, than Borderlands 2, and a big improvement on the last one. As far as I can tell, pretty much all these negative reviews relate to the co-op mode and associated glitches, so if you plan to solo this game, ignore them because they're not relevant.     Although I would recommend to wait for an update to fix the performance issues (that really tarnish the game and the great work the devs put in their game), I managed to get past these and I have enjoyed the game just fine. But I know that most won't tolerate some of the framerate drops I've witnessed (really bad sometimes). It's up to you, but great game anyway !! Congrats on the devs, the game is loads of fun.

    No vertical split-screen ruins the entire experience of this game. I'm not gonna play single-player, this game is meant for couch co-op. Add onto that the unreadable text, it's clear Gearbox didn't test couch co-op AT ALL, which means it is completely unplayable for me. Releasing an unplayable game in 2019 is ridiculous.

We had to spend an hour trying to find the vertical split screen option we were promised to NO AVAIL, after doing that for an hour we had to spend 30 more minutes changing all the settings to accommodate me because I have terrible motion sickness and the horizontal spiltscreen when first loaded literally made me sick to my stomach in minutes.

    I have played every single game in this series. I have loved the experience so much... This game gave me a reason to love video games again and it's become a real staple in my life and my relationship. That being said, this is the most disappointed I've been on a release of this series ever. As a fan, I can speak for almost everyone when I say that I really wish you had taken the time to fix these problems before releasing this game. I would have been happy to wait. My boyfriend would have been happy to wait. We wanted a good time, we wanted to find loot and kick ass. We're still going to try to do this... But honestly, it broke my heart this morning when he told me he genuinely wanted me to play by myself while he was at work today so I could really enjoy the game and the experience.

To have BL3 released with this feature unplayable in the current form is inexcusable. IIt is obvious that this game was never tested on a modern TV in split screen co-op. The text is unreadable, the menus bleed into the other screen and Horizontal only is unplayable. My wife and I have purchased every Borderlands game. Having co-op was the selling point to get her started gaming with me. To have BL3 released with this feature unplayable in the current form is inexcusable.     Besides the horrible lag while on splitscreen with my son the game has twice just shutdown my ps4.. never had that issue with another game... this game is unfinished and was released prematurely...     THE FONT SIZE IS AS SMALL AS THE FRAME RATES ON CO-OP. Not only is it laggy on a ps4 pro, but they also removed 4 player couch co-op. it rewards you like a mobile game. claptrap is shrill and is a forced imitation. the ai is braindead at level 39. This concludes my ted talk

    Very enjoyable. I love Borderlands and it’s unique style. I’m sure with future updates the game will be even better.

    Don't trust the haters, if you like Borderlands 2, fon't hesitate. This one is not so much diffrerent but bigger, better. Not perfect but it is a real pleasure to find a new Borderlands. For the haters, please respect the workers who made this game and respect the truth ...

    Borderlands 3 is an absolutely great addition to the series. Everything that made the series fantastic in previous installments has either been brought back or improved upon. There may be a few small issues, like the frame rate during split-screen, but those small issues can easily be fixed in patches. A fantastic game that will get even greater as cross play and expansions are released.

    On a 50" TV the text is actually unreadable due to the microscopical dimension, and even if you manage somehow to play with this issue, it is comically lagging : i mean 1-2 seconds of freeze if your partner opens the inventory.     Really fun game with excellent graphics. A few issues but a patch would fix them. I highly recommend this game.

    Игра отличная, все говорят что в ней есть баги или лагает на ps4pro, у меня к примеру нету ни одного бага и не разу не багануло, говорят что когда достаёшь прицел теряется фпс, тоже самое праверил я и ничего не потерял, так что советую всем эту игру купить в ней переработанная графика, новоя стрельба из оружия и многое другое.     Ужасный запуск. Лаги меню Эхо, сильнейшие просадки fps, тормозящие и даже порой несрабатывающие скрипты ( один раз даже из за бага невозможно было закончить сайдквест). Поставил оценку больше еденицы только по тому что очень ждал эту игру,да и всё остальное на уровне,кроме технического исполнения. У игры большие проблемы в техническом плане,ужасные.Ужасный запуск.     All of those 0 reviews are a load of crap. This game is perfectly playable. I’ve been playing on a PS4 pro and seem to be doing just fine. There were 2 times in the 20+ hours where the menu lagged (maybe 1/2 a second). The frame rate does drop sometimes but not to an unplayable level and it doesn’t seem to happen often. I see a lot of people saying “innovation”. You want to play Borderlands? This is Borderlands. You want to play Battlefield? This isn’t the place for you. It’s Borderlands. It’s full of guns, cheesy humor, and explosions. That being said, I’m not a fanboy but I’m really enjoying my experience. This is my first comment ever on metacritic and I’m only doing it because almost all of these comments are review bombers that aren’t reviewing the game on the actual gameplay. Rant done, now I am going to press the pause button and continue my adventure.… Expand

    More guns, more planets, more skills, more… more. If you liked the previous ones, this gives you plenty of the same to enjoy. Borderlands 3 is the very definition of the bigger and better sequel. [Issue#168, p.76]

    Factor in the graphical glitches, rampant texture pop-in and generally asthmatic performance levels, even when running on a PS4 Pro with settings optimised to favour smooth running, and there really is no end of reasons not to love Borderlands 3 (and don’t even think about Googling developers Gearbox Games’ litany of employee relations history)...And yet... love it, I do. Guilty as charged.
