Modern Warfare is back with old-fashioned gameplay that is more grounded and efficient. The generous amount of content adds some depth to one of the best chapters of the saga to date. Magic!

A great campaign, excellent multiplayer modes and amazing graphics make this game worthy of its namesake.

The Spec Op mode is challenging and I like that it gives you so many tactical options, but at times it can feel a little too much like a horde mode. Multiplayer is as solid as ever, and the new tech enabled by the new game engine brings the graphics and sounds of the game to a whole new level. Gunfight and Ground War are great new additions to the mix, and now you can easily find a mode that fits both your playstyle and the amount of time that you have available to play.

This new Modern Warfare is unarguably the best Call of Duty we played in years. Despite some thematic concerns, the game conveys a solid and enjoyable campaing, and one of the most intense multiplayer experience.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sets a benchmark for the future of games. The amazing new technology it utilizes gives it a level of quality and polish that’s rarely seen outside of first-party studios. A bold approach on a no-frills campaign mode helps it stick the landing, while going back to the drawing board with multiplayer rekindles a classic Call of Duty feel long lost.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a great new start for the franchise, thanks to terrific visuals, cool new game modes and the best campaign since Black Ops. Unfortunately Spec Ops are a massive let down.

Infinity Ward brings back the iconic and the most anticipated single-player campaign and it looks as great as the old Modern Warfare series despite the mediocre ending. The multi-player part is as neat as usual but the spec ops is too difficult to continue.

It was an intense and memorable experience. The story had moving parts and characters who had very different reactions when put into the crucible of unjust warfare. I think it is very well done, but probably could have left some parts out.

Modern Warfare is the most astounding Call of Duty I've played since World at War. But they haven't gone as far they could, in the campaign especially. The multiplayer is outstanding, as always, with the slightest modifications eking out big results. But in the game's attempt to shock and awe, I don't think they're quite there yet.

Call of Duty returns to its origins, with a raw and intense story mode and a multiplayer that gathers the best of each chapters to reach a new exponent. The king of the shooters demonstrates again who rules in the genre.

Not everyone will appreciate the new approach to PvP and the return of the Spec-Ops is a little disappointing, but otherwise Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is still a great shooter.

When it comes to the campaign, multiplayer and technique, Modern Warfare is a huge improvement. The game is not perfect, but it brings Call of Duty back to the golden days of the franchise.

Not as revolutionary as the technical reincarnation had us hope or fear, but it scores the most tweaks on the tried and tested formula. A strong single-player and enough choices in the multiplayer to give every type of shooter player what they want. And again: crossplay included and without season pass.

Modern Warfare should have received a new Call of Duty subhead given just how different its avenues of play are. Not every one of Infinity Ward’s ideas works, but a few are successful enough that I could see them as series staples. Modern Warfare’s accomplishments may not be as pronounced as Black Ops 4’s (Blackout being one of them), but it still delivers a hell of a multiplayer experience. Gunfight alone is worth the price of admission.

Infinity Ward has done a good job, and luckily the game breathes the atmosphere and class of the first trilogy in many areas.

If you've ever loved Call of Duty but dropped out of the series, we advise you to return. Modern Warfare offers an excellent story mode and intense multiplayer pots. Modern Warfare is Infinity Ward like it’s supposed to be.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a true return to form for the franchise after some not-as-good entries in the last years, thanks to a compelling campaign and to a boots on the ground multiplayer.

Modern Warfare is a brave new iteration, with tons of news additions and some controversial decisions in terms of design. Has a frantic and well-balanced campaign, new gunfight mode is the best multiplayer novelty in years but has also problems with some maps and co-op experience with obvious weakness.

Though it disappoints with some poorly designed maps and a lack of game modes at launch, Modern Warfare is one of the best games in the Call Of Duty franchise featuring a haunting and memorable campaign that is probably the best looking game this generation.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a great and robust product. Its camping is ok, but nothing too fancy. Pretty good Multiplayer modes. A lot of content for the users.

After all the "divisions" and "breakpoints," Modern Warfare seems to come from a different planet. The multiplayer harks back to the days of Battlefield 2 & 3, and the single-player campaign shows war in a mature and realistic way. Finally, we have a game that makes no allowances for a lower age rating. Call of Duty is back at the top - hands down, the best shooter on the market right now.

My recommendation: Play the campaign, then wait a few days before diving into multiplayer. This might be the best way to avoid cross-contamination and get the most out of these two deeply incongruent gaming experiences.

A stacked package of single-player and multiplayer offerings, Call of Duty Modern Warfare may not hit every mark that it fires but this ballsy reinvention of the franchise is still the blockbuster benchmark that is thrilling, thoughtful and terrific.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare successfully reimagines the iconic series. A few key mechanical additions refine combat in important ways while the campaign returns with some of the series’ best missions. With cross-play and free updates planned for the next year, Modern Warfare is just getting started.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare offers a believable campaign that's aimed towards a mature audience, and delivers a very good experience, while the multiplayer is as strong as always. The only let down is the Ground War mode which feels relatively rushed.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was excellent, and although Call of Duty: Modern Warfare doesn’t quite reach those same heights, it’s still a very enjoyable game. Its biggest downfall is the broken state of Special Ops in its current iteration, and the move back to kill streaks in multiplayer is a strange change of direction. The return of a campaign is welcomed for players like me who look forward to playing them every year. It’s brilliantly executed and is by far the one of the best in a very long time. Overall Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is another terrific multiplayer experience with a fresh take on the campaign that is greatly satisfying.

Although not quite the return to greatness that many fans were hoping for, this reboot of the Modern Warfare series manages to hold its own against the glut of online shooters currently available and offers enough tweaks and revisions to the core gameplay to justify dipping into yet another annual instalment.

It’s hard to complain about the rest of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. On a lot of levels it’s a back-to-basics approach for the series that works, with an engaging, entertaining campaign, great visuals and voice acting, some classic Modern Warfare callbacks, and a strong multiplayer mode too. If you’ve been away from the series for a long time, this would make a pretty good year to jump back in.

A visually impressive, intense campaign meets a bucketload of multiplayer modes - although not all of them are convincing.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does everything fans of the franchise could ever want. You get the triumphant return of the single-player campaign; crossplay that actually works; maps and weapons available to everyone; and a robust multiplayer experience packed with over 25 maps (including Spec Ops maps) out of the box. Modern Warfare isn’t the best Call of Duty game in the franchise as the single-player and Spec Ops modes fall a little short. Yet, at the very least it pushes the series back in the right direction and fans should be plenty satisfied with what Infinity Ward has brought to the table this year.

Everything is upside down. Call of Duty has a better solo campaign than multiplayer after many years. We will remember a perfectly scripted war with a dense atmosphere, but we’ll forget about the unbalanced online multiplayer. [Issue#298]

If you’re looking for a new FPS game to pick up and you’ve been a fan of Call of Duty in the past, then Modern Warfare could be a great reason for you to return to the series and see what has changed and what has remained the same.

Modern Warfare isn't a home run, with its disappointing spec ops mode, camp friendly multiplayer maps and delayed texture pop-in. However, as a shooter, the latest Call of Duty is an absolute blast to play, with sublime audio effects, impressive graphics and a great single-player campaign. Recommended.

Modern Warfare makes you love the franchise all over again. With a great campaign and an excellent multiplayer to boot this is the most fun you'll have with a shooter all year. It's a shame the Spec Ops mode doesn't live up to the hype.

Call of Duty is undeniably a piece of propaganda fiction that glamorises and bolsters the image of war, as well as the perspective and ‘righteousness’ of western forces. That said, the campaign of this reboot of Modern Warfare tries heavy handedly, and at times problematically, to more fully and authentically tease out the ethics, complexities, and perspectives of one of our world’s biggest current conflicts. Though far from perfect, there is still absolutely some important ideas and experiences for players in this campaign, ones that may even open your eyes to a new way of thinking about warfare and the people in it - especially when thinking about ways that we can and should be fighting here in New Zealand, by accepting the refugees of these conflicts and contributing as much aid as possible.

Infinity Ward was never going to recapture the magic of the original Modern Warfare, but this is still their most memorable Call of Duty game of the past decade. This is a bold new spin that’s uneven in places, but proves there is still room for innovation within that core template.

As a well-rounded gaming experience, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare takes steps in the right direction to give itself some serious realism. Offering more grounded gameplay than instalments such as the Black Ops or Advanced Warfare games, the gunplay and controls are tight and very balanced for both the experienced and casual player alike. The only thing that the game and Infinity Ward themselves seemed to truly struggle with was the narrative – where it works in some cases, often you’re left feeling like you’re stuck in a half-concocted American political propaganda piece.

The often dark campaign adds variety that introduces Call of Duty’s potential future and puts it up there with the best the series has ever seen; the multiplayer is as engrossing as ever, even though the poor map design causes some issues; and the Spec-Ops co-op is best avoided if you don’t have a competent and organized squad to play through with.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s varied gameplay modes and excellent gunplay suggest the series is headed in a promising direction.

A fascinating, if somewhat incomplete package, then. Modern Warfare is a game looking to re-carve its identity as the world’s most evocative and recognisable shooter. A tough feat, despite all the resources clearly thrown at its inception. There are clear missteps along the way as Infinity Ward walks its line, but the direction is an exciting one.

A slickly produced, well constructed military shooter filled with thrilling set-pieces and moments of fraught tension. It’s also a good run-and-gun online shooter, which wants to bring something fresh to the way online team-based competition works in this genre but isn’t quite there yet – new maps will inevitably follow.

This year we got a Call of Duty with an impressive single player campaign - that offers tight and immense fights for about 6 hours - along with a wealth of multiplayer modes for literally every taste. Too bad, though, that Infinity Ward tried to keep everyone satisfied thus changing the DNA of the multiplayer mode with mixed to negative results.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has an outstanding campaign, and the multiplayer will have you itching to play just one more game over, and over, and over again.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is another fantastic shooter from Infinity Ward, but it’s still just a Call of Duty game. If you’re a fan of the heights of the franchise, you’re sure to have a great time. However, for those hoping for a more daring and innovative leap, there’s not much new to see here.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare isn't the best Call of Duty game. Hell, it's not even the best Modern Warfare game. But it does maintain the series tradition of delivering a solid feature-packed release. Modern Warfare offers a great single-player campaign and exciting multiplayer gameplay, all dressed up in excellent visuals and terrific sound. Death, taxes, and Call of Duty. The brand may long in the tooth, but it isn't ready for discharge anytime soon.

When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is at its best, it's easily one of this generation's best entries in the series. As a whole, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare hits all the right marks. The campaign is well done, with some very memorable moments and a decent overall story that'll overshadow some of the weaker enemies and vanilla ending. The multiplayer is as reliable as before, and the new modes provide some fresh fun, while true cross-play automatically makes it the best entry in the series due to the expanded player base. Wrapped in a presentation that provides a good preview of what a next-generation entry could look like, Modern Warfare is a very good entry for series fans who are willing to overlook the currently undercooked Spec Ops mode.

Infinity Ward's reboot of the iconic classic doesn't surpass the original, but does a fantastic job of translating its formula into the modern era. A thrilling solo campaign alongside a robust selection of multiplayer options ensure this package is well worth a visit, even if the long-awaited return of Special Ops just about misses the mark.

These new additions don't always land as perfectly as it feels they were intended, but there's no denying this is the freshest the series has felt for some time.

The proposal is solid without being infallible, far from it, but enough to make the opus a legitimate spiritual son of CoD 4.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is not just a reboot. The solo game is great, his multiplayer mode, with Gunfight, solid and efficient. The game lacks a bit of depth (more hours for the campaign in particular) to constitute the perfect picture. But not to the point of not being an indispensable part of your collection for this end of the year.

Though the campaign doesn’t perfectly stick the landing, it finds strength in a multitude of moments that keep things intimate yet thrilling, making it almost certainly one of the series’ strongest entries.

In general, Call of Duty Modern Warfare is a tight shooter that hits most of the parts you expect from a AAA shooter, while throwing heaps of new ideas into the mix. However, the few areas that I'm cold on: Ground War, Spec Ops and the few moments of the campaign when common sense gave way to a desire to shock needlessly… they're a bitter aftertaste to one of the best shooters I've played all year.

Overall Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a good title that is marred by the expectations that the Modern Warfare name brings with it. The campaign has some really stellar gameplay moments that are brought down by the mediocre plot. Multiplayer was fun but felt a bit like the competition’s output (despite there being no Battlefield release this year) which may be a turn off for some. I don’t think Modern Warfare 2019 has done anything to make me rethink waiting for substantial price drops to play Call of Duty campaigns, because clearly multiplayer is still Activision’s main focus and that’s just not where I get my kicks.

CoD: Modern Warfare presents some of the best, although short, singleplayer experience franchise had to offer in a long time. On the other (multiplayer) hand, it has some of the funniest and satisfying gunplay, all riddled with bad map design and some unrefined new game modes.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare almost brings the franchise back to its roots with a meaningful campaign that includes memorable characters and a horrifying depiction of war, but falls short when it comes to the traditional multiplayer. New modes like Gunfight and Realism are highlights and the core game still feels as good as ever, but it won’t save you from getting continuously spawn camped.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is one of the most refreshing and tactically immersive entries in the franchise to date, but the current state of some multiplayer components at launch and a deeply disappointing co-op mode drags down an otherwise fantastic FPS.

The pitfalls of Spec Ops don't detract from what Modern Warfare does well, though. Realism mode is an excellent addition to the slate, and although not all the new multiplayer modes are great, Gunfight and the Night Vision playlist are refreshing standouts. And while the campaign ends up playing it safe in the end, it's still a memorable one, and it lays a strong foundation for where the Modern Warfare series could go from here.

A passable entry in the long-running series, the latest Modern Warfare is polished but lacks creativity. It’s certainly more of the same as a return to a once-beloved sub-series. Sadly, it fails to invigorate and impress on the same level as the groundbreaking Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Still , the game has a dedicated fanbase and the developers undoubtedly cater to that crowd. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare lives up to the series as a whole, but ultimately fails to match up with the best of the sub-series it attempts reboot.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare refreshes the formula by rooting itself more firmly in realism and adopting a grittier approach to both combat and to its Campaign's story. The gameplay is the smooth experience expected from the franchise and results in some fun, memorable Campaign moments and a handful of enjoyable multiplayer ones. The Spec Ops mode is a bit of a mess but could easily be fixed with a patch, while the majority of the current multiplayer maps leach the enjoyment from the classic CoD formula. Ultimately, this is a steady-as-she-goes experience that walks a good walk but fails to capture a truly elegant stride.

I feel like this Call of Duty could evolve to become one of the best ever, as there is certainly a solid foundation to build upon. With a number of balancing patches, some new (or classic!) maps, and constant communication with the community, I think Modern Warfare will get better. For now, though, you can find me in Gunfight, which separates the brilliant from the BS.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign is more throwaway blockbuster than challenging look at conflict, but its mission variety makes for an enjoyable few hours. And even with the disappointing Spec Ops, a wealth of entertaining multiplayer modes makes this a worthwhile addition to any Call of Duty fan’s collection.

Nowhere close to a reinvention of the series but the more serious tone is mostly successful, with an ambitious story campaign and some entertaining new multiplayer modes.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot is certainly not the first game that has disappointed me at launch, and hopefully it will join the list of games I was initially disappointed with but grew to love thanks to their respective developers’ continued devotion and care. I know it’s not the safest of bets given the Call of Duty franchise’s annualized rollout, but I honestly want to see Modern Warfare continue to flourish as much as I’m sure the folks at Infinity Ward do.

Modern Warfare is precariously balanced. On a straightforward level, its multiplayer is admirable in its reform and a touch undercooked in its execution, while the inventiveness in its six hours of campaign remind players why this became such a juggernaut name in the industry. But underneath that, there's an unease about the way Modern Warfare pushes the player's buttons without demonstrating respect for or responsibility to its source material. [Issue#340, p.110]

For all the technology and exceptional design this new Modern Warfare musters, the only message it can offer is woefully jejune: If governments might be mistaken in their judgments or actions, if the act of war itself might be inescapably evil, at least we can still rely on badass warriors who will do whatever it takes to hold back the evil forces that would come to hurt us in the night, to destroy us because they hate our freedom.

All in all, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is not a large-scale return, but not a disaster either. The fact that the single player campaign is back and is of course welcomed. It's is very ambitious but most of the time it feels like we are getting more of the same. And that more of the same right now feels mostly old.
