Taking equal inspiration from hack 'n slash dungeon crawlers (procedurally generated dungeons, loot drops, etc) and Metroidvania-style platformers, the game aims to immerse you in its 2D fantasy world full of exciting treasure, deadly enemies, and abundant secrets. Players assume the role of a soldier passing through a remote mining town on their journey home from a long war. The town's miners have recently disappeared after breaching a long-forgotten temple far below the town, and reawakened an ancient slumbering evil. Now trapped in the town by supernatural forces, you're left with no option but to explore the mines below, battle enemies and bosses, and increase your abilities in hopes of finally escaping and returning home. The tense fights leave you with sweaty palms and an elevated heart rate, keeping you glued to the action as you venture ever deeper below ground.

While Chasm doesn’t offer anything particularly new to the genre, it does deliver intricate locations and satisfying swordplay in spades. [Issue#153, p.86]

Despite its flaws, there's still a lot of fun to be had with Chasm. Exploring and finding new secrets is satisfying but traversing the same areas multiple times is not. The combat is also a mixed bag as some enemies are enjoyable to fight and others are a chore.

One complaint I would say I have
is poor difficulty balancing. Easy feels like baby mode, whereas Normal feels more like Hard mode, and Hard feels like Expert. All in all though, a great hidden gem for metroidvania fans.

Vivid bit graphics and aggressive encounters make for a nostalgic challenge. I was not disappointed. One particular game mechanic however at times was discouraging. Fret not though. A little perseverance was rewarding. World class job Bit Kid! Keep it up. Expand

Amazing old school metroidvania, feels and looks like classic game in every single moment.

Chasm is a fairly short and by-the-numbers Metroidvania, but I had a great time playing it nevertheless.

In this game, the gimmick is that each playthrough features a randomized set of dungeons (bar a few select areas that are consistent each time). While this might seem to offer the opportunity for multiple playthroughs, the randomization of the dungeons doesn't make going through the dungeons for another round that much more enjoyable. I had a great time running through the various areas the first time, but once I beat the game, I put it down for good.

Despite its gimmick, the game's music is solid. Its pixelated graphics, to me, strike a solid balance between being nostalgic (without being pandering) and modern. Furthermore, the combat is so reminiscent of its predecessors (i.e. Symphony of the NIght, Aria of Sorrow, etc.) that I felt as though I was playing a spiritual successor to one of those games. And in my mind, while those games have been made already, I enjoyed Chasm just as much as I enjoyed those titles. Having said that, such Castlevania games already exist - therefore, Chasm doesn't bring much novelty to the genre, but it gets plenty of things I enjoyed about those games right.

Overall, if you liked Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow or any of the other excellent Castlevania games of that nature, I'd recommend Chasm to you. It won't be on par to those games, but you'll likely have a great time playing it nevertheless.

The time was wasted. Poor gameplay. Poor animation. Inconsistent art direction. Thematically weak art. So so music. Most of the issues were raised by backers while the game was still under development. The game still has them. There are projects done by less people with less resources that are so much better. A failure. Expand

Yeah a missable collection at the beginning makes this game trash from the start. Its a metrovania with backtracking well not in this game. Good cause already 2 are bugged in my first 100% walktrough. Wasted 5 hours for nothing. What a piece of trash game deluxe this is. Never should have been released on ps4. I hope the devs die a horrible death Expand
