The game has so many glitches too, please don't let the nostalgia blind your judge, games industries need to know what is good and what isn't
I still can't understan why they change the n.sane trilogy designs and why they put a tumblr Tawna

The difficulty is inconsistent at best, and painfully tedious at worst. The "innovations" of masks and side character levels are just rehashes of abilities from other better platformers, that serve to slow down Crashes originally driving pace. The story and plot are forgettably formulaic, with a general decrease in intelligence to all characters, with dialogue that is either cringey or uninteresting with very rare chuckleworthy lines scattered here and there... The music is surprisingly good, generally because it uses the og soundtrack as a base for remixed versions. The Crash formula is fun, but the attempts to make the game "new" only serve to make it worse, and interrupt otherwise good but dated gameplay. Some times fun, very pretty, but mostly annoying. Levels are a bit to long for my taste. This makes completing the game on 100% more tedious. But besides that everything is incredible.

Positives

+ Great graphics and excellent frame rate
+ Excellent levels with tons of attention to detail
+ A love letter to Crash fans with tons of throwbacks and easter eggs
+ Charming characters and story but Tawna is really aggravating . Her jokes are just ugh!
+ Tons of content all for free
+ Zero bad business practices
+ When a level has the right difficulty it's a really fun game to play (Some flashback levels)
+ Really good boss fights

Negatives

- Extremely and brutally punishing difficulty . Like Kaizo's hacks levels of BS trial and error pixel and timing perfect platforming can be found here if you want to complete this game . The hardest and most frustrating platformer I have ever played in my life that makes the original trilogy look like a complete joke
- Why hide boxes in a game that is already crushingly difficult to 100%? . There is nothing more disheartening than a level kicking your teeth in for more than an hour only to reach the end see 143/144 . What's worse is that when you replay the level you have to do the hardest thing all over again and that's the absurd bonus levels . I managed to complete Cortex's Castle without dying but some of those I couldn't complete because they are masochistically difficult and cheap . Oh you reached that box OOPS! you didn't do it in this exact order so commit suicide for the umpteenth time and start from the beginning
- Casual runs have never been more pointless than in Crash 4 . If you do decide to play this game casually then you will make the game four hours long at best . Even if you turn the infinite lives off the game showers you with so much Wumpa fruit that after a while it will make breaking boxes entirely pointless which leads me to ....
- The game is obsessed with you dying over and over until you get it (Hence the modern infinite lives setting and the overabundance of wumpa fruit) but the checkpoint system in the flashback/bonus levels is HORRENDOUS . You may not have lives there but god damn if it meant they were shorter or less masochistic I'd prefer a life limit
- The N.Verted levels only help to bloat an already packed to the brim with content game . If they were optional whatever right? But the secret ending (That is 2 seconds long btw) and many skins require you to play those levels . It's obvious that they added these like 2-3 months before release in order for the box to say "Over a 100 levels" or something like that when in reality they are the same but only mirrored and photoshopped
- Why do you force us to replay levels we have already passed as Crash in the side characters levels? Just WHY? and those sections have their own stupidly hard bonus levels
- The platforming demands 100% perfect jumps and timing but the mechanics are just as janky as the original trilogy . Caddicarus put it best when he said "If you demand perfection from me then I demand perfection from you"
- The animal riding sections are Bubsy 3D levels of horrendous
- Seriously who thought some of the Coco flashback levels were a good idea? I highly question if the developers themselves can beat their own game

I...desperately wanted to love this game but I just can't . If it wasn't a Crash game and part of my childhood I would have thrown out my window . It should be used as an example as to how not to do difficulty in a video game and in my opinion the entire game was butchered because some exec wanted content no matter how good or bad it was which led to the games bloated nature and ridiculous difficulty and cheap as hell systems that force you to replay the game endlessly

What could have been a fun 20-25 hour platformer to complete became an 80-100 hour nightmare that nobody besides the mega fans will bother to attempt . It speaks wonders when even Persona 5 Royal has a higher competition rate as Crash 4 at this moment stands at a 0,9% for 100% and 0,4% for 106% and the game sold like crap so that's you core player base that didn't even bother with it

I even question if the high scoring journalists actually bothered to 100% this game . I highly doubt it

It is really difficult. I died at least 20 times on every single level. I do have to admit they made a pretty decent Crash game. Level design was decent. The new playable characters did not sit well with me. They gave us dingodile and Tawna, both were pretty mediocre. I didn’t understand why they were even there. I hope if they continue to make more Crash and Spyro games that they will make them less difficult and easier to enjoy. I can’t stress enough the difficulty is ultimately what brought this game down a few points. I DIED 143 times on the last level before we fight Cortex. Expand

I can only recommend this game to fans of monotonous grinds and difficulty that no man should ever have to endure. If you are a completionist and it’s a reason you love Crash games just stay away. This is a nightmare. They put WAY too much stuff in here to do and there’s not a lot of it that is actually enjoyable. They went and made the most Crash game ever and not in a good way. The levels and game itself seem pretty fun but when you throw in completionist stuff like the box gems (which are now more annoying than ever because there are stupidly hidden boxes everywhere), collecting wumpa fruit gems, dying less than 3 times each level gem, the hidden gem on every level, having to get platinum relics on every level, doing all of that on the “inverted style” level for every level AND the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life with the N Sanely Perfect relics where you have to beat every level without dying WHILE collecting every single box........ you have a game that I absolutely despise. And it’s crazy how simple it would’ve been to make me love it. Throw out the stupid inverted levels, make relic requirements to only need gold or even just regular relic, and get rid of the n sanely perfect relics and you have yourself an amazing game I would’ve recommended to anyone and everyone. But stay away from this game unless you enjoy suffering. And this is coming from someone that 100% completed Super Meat Boy. Expand

Unfortunately much too heavy and only causes frustration.
If you think the Souls games are difficult, please play this game. Ideally to 100%.
Only give a 4 because the levels are way too difficult.
The challenge is good and okay, but not during the normal run and certainly not that difficult!
I went through the Crash Trilo on platinum and didn't have nearly as many problems with it as with the game, even though I only played through ...
If ever a 5 part should come then for god's sake it shouldn't be like the 4 part.
Character or graphic design is also unfortunately not nice. Why didn't you take over the graphics engine from the Trilo 1: 1? Especially the jumping behavior and the physics are much more pleasant than in the 4 part.
The graphics are also worse than in the Trilo but you have 60 fps which is great.
That's what I missed with the Trilo.
Therefore, a request from a crash fan makes the next game less difficult! The graphic design is also better like the Trilo. Better to bring in the adult humor. See Little Tiger, what relates to his penis and much, much more!
The original Crash was also designed for older people and didn't have a toddler look. The funny and extreme dying animations are missing and have also made crash!
Just like his super hot girlfriend!

The look of the game was clearly designed for younger children. Then why do you make it so bloody hard? Do you want the children to be frustrated or even so angry that they break the controller?
As an adult I can hardly stand it. how are children supposed to survive this without freaking out? Or are today's children all such pro gamers and manage a game like this 100% without any major help or problems? Would be new to me.
Somehow a contradiction and I wonder if the developers even knew for whom they were really making the game.
Should it pick up the old fans? then i ask you why did you change the look and the type of crash so that it has little to do with the old games?
Should it appeal to new customers and children? then i ask the developers why is it so damn difficult and scare off new customers?

When I was growing up, Crash Bandicoot was my childhood, it was the first game I had when I first received my PlayStation. I spent hoursWhen I was growing up, Crash Bandicoot was my childhood, it was the first game I had when I first received my PlayStation. I spent hours playing through it’s levels even though I was absolutely crap at it back then. I personally found myself enjoying its sequels way more instead, especially the variety and challenge of the third game, Warped. As time moved on however, I became a bigger fan of Crash’s sort of half brother in Spyro the Dragon, playing through the original trilogy numerous times. But all those memories returned with the release of the Nsane Trilogy back in 2017, the folks over at Vicarious Visions did an amazing job turning the original games into modern platforming classics, just with more accurate jumping. But it’s fallen upon Toys for Bob, the folks responsible for the Spyro Trilogy remake to create the first true new Crash game in over 20 years.

This game is set right after Warped with Cortex, Uka-Uka and N. Tropy stuck for the last 20 years after their defeat, what this does is essentially retcon everything released afterwards, including Crash Bash, so nothing of value was lost. After finally opening a rift between worlds, it’s up to our heroes Crash, Coco and Aku to stop Cortex’s latest evil plan across dimensions. This time around we are also introduced to brand new Quantum Masks that will change up the gameplay in many ways.

So after going through the seventeen steps to play this game on the PS4 (Installation, Update, Install the Update, Powder its Nose, License Agreement, Waiting for the game to pick the right outfit and ask me to register an Activision Account for additional skins *pfffft*) You are presented with two playstyle options, Modern and Retro, this really just amounts to whether you want to play with lives or not. I have been on record several times that the concept of lives can go die in a fire with even long time holdouts like Mario finally at long last ditching them, I also bring up examples like the fantastic modern Rayman platformers that just have you do the most recent section if you are killed.

Speaking of which, It seems this game has taken a few of its inspirations from Rayman Legends. Not only with the new grind rail sections but you are rewarded Gems for how many Whompa fruits you get after each level. When it comes to Level design though, the Trilogy levels were great looking but restricted due to the original designs, this time around the devs have free reign over what they can do and each level is just meticulously detailed with these little extras that make them all stand out but my god can these levels can get huge. Toys for Bob certainly did their homework on how a Crash level works and the controls and camera flow incredibly smoothly, I never felt Crash wasn’t in my control with there even being a little beacon on the ground when you jump so no longer are you taking blind leaps of faith. The difficulty though is not that severe it’s like a really good curry, delicious but with just the right amount of heat. That is unless you are trying to actually complete the levels 100 %, in which case good luck getting off the toilet anytime tonight.

Getting all the boxes can be no easy task especially in Bonus stages, while they used to be fun little romps in the original games they can be incredibly unforgiving here with exact methods to get everything or be made to start over and they are made even more complex with the new masks. The Quantum Masks introduced in this game give us several new powers like stopping time, switching gravity or dimensions and a heavy-duty spin attack, instead of being able to pick them out and use them at your own free will, they appear during certain segments in levels. Crash 4 introduces us to so many new mechanics and features it is almost hard to keep track of them all

While there are certainly some complex sections, especially with Bonus Stages it is a real stretch to consider this game “hard”. We’ve gotten used to so many games hand holding us that we have become blind to any real challenge. Anything even considered hard is automatically paired with Souls or Cuphead. But anybody who is going to strive for full completion, you are certainly getting your money worth with each level having a “Twisted” version with its own set of gems to collect. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is an amazing addition to the series and a spectacular follow up to the Original Trilogy.

My fingers are crossed for what they do with Spyro 4

Th…there is gonna be a Spyro 4, right?

Its 2020 and there's no camera control, I don't care about collecting all the boxes, the art style is not for me but the overall charm of the crash games has been decimated. Its not cool or funny if you are TRYING to be cool and funny. Why are you trying to force a niche culture and sense of modernism. Who asked for Tawna to have crap blue hair and have the I'm independent and strong woman spiel, its old and its not even original nor is it charming. It makes you cringe and roll your eyes. Everything just looks off (character designs, crates, animations), Crash acts differently, the writing isn't good (not that the writing for any crash game ever was but it's the worse of the 4), and most importantly, Crash moves differently. This game just feels like a cheap knockoff and I can't understand why. Did they not have access to anything at all from the N. Sane trilogy? TheFor being a direct sequel to the original trilogy, this game definitely holds it's own and I feel can be considered just as good. The art-style heavily improves in comparison to the N-sane trilogy and the lighting system has gotten quite the upgrade thanks to using a new engine. The story could have been better but I wouldn't say it's lacking when taking the original trilogy into consideration. Crash was never known for it's amazing storytelling but rather its difficult yet fun gameplay which this game does wonderfully. It's also one of the few games I can think of with a skin system that doesn't have any **** microtransactions tacked on (and from how it looks, would be hard to add on later like they did for the CTR remake)

With all that being said, if you've played the original trilogy and have been looking for a new game to scratch that itch, this game will do just that. For anyone new to the series, I would say this is a competent game on its own (Though I would recommend playing the original trilogy first to see if you'd like the kind of gameplay Crash has to offer)

Very mixed bag with moments of brilliance.

- Gameplay: It's serviceable, level design is decent. Crate placement is poor. They are often hidden out of view for no reason or have poor visibility and this hinders completion, but the generous use of hidden pathways is welcome.

Puzzles are often overtuned for 'perfection' which will require the player's suicide often if they miss something for completion, which combined with the unfamiliar quantum mask mechanics does slow the pacing to a crawl very often. Movement is okay. Crash is heavy and slide jumping doesn't provide extra speed like the originals, but gravity is spot-on (and crates don't slide past Crash's body when they should break, which is nice).

Sound design: The game's strongest aspect if I'm honest. Best in class (especially those armored crate shattering sounds...) The SFX are grade-A, but the music is not. Very forgettable tunes this time around.

- Story: The plot and premise are very strong which I think sets an unrealistic precedent for Toys for Bob who are very new to Crash, when tasked with writing the Bandicoot's next adventure.

It takes a while to get going but it's fine for a story to be a late bloomer. The climax of the game is handled beautifully I think, with absolutely absurd setpieces and level designs popping up, and the return to normalcy and nostalgia at the end to reign in all the insanity was masterful and shows great restraint. Excellent structure.

The character writing is very poor, however. If you bought this game expecting Crash Bandicoot's usual comedic edge, you will be sorely dissappointed. This game is not funny. In fact, the characters are dry and morose. Everyone acts distant towards Crash who should be the star of the show. He ends up feeling more like a leper. Coco doesn't entertain her brother's antics and prefers to be above them, and she doesn't laugh at his jokes. They don't have the same bond as before. Tawna and Crash aren't shown to have a bond either and i think this was even MORE important to highlight as their first new adventure. He's just left in his own little box, and is ignored by everyone except Cortex, who he hugs near the end... which he has good reason for doing, honestly it's very sad.

Fans will notice just how many villains are missing in this adventure, mainly Tiny who was present in the Timetwister during Crash 3, and his absence is felt in every cutscene as we see Dingodile roam freely. Many will also cite Uka Uka's disappearance early in the story as a negative, but I think it's pivotal in keeping Cortex and N. Tropy's performances front and center, and their motivations pure, and they do not disappoint. Dingodile doesn't either.

However there are quite a few things about this new Tawna that do, and I must address them more because the game simply doesn't...
This was a golden opportunity to establish how disenfranchised Tawna is as a character, and the story doesn't address her lack of screentime with the cast prior. It treats her like she was always there and... most fans know she wasn't. Tawna wasn't always there. We don't 'know' who Tawna is, actually and never have. It's very tonedeaf. Here however, she's stubborn, brooding, and realistic looking. She feels very foreign, at the beginning, and STILL feels very foreign at the end, which I don't think was the intended effect. This character internalizes the rejection and shame that Tawna from before should, and I think that shows history there, but she's clearly NOT the Tawna from before, and it doesn't feel appropriate here. This doesn't 'feel' like Tawna, and her performance wasn't terribly likable either.

This game is an easy 8 or 9 out of 10, were it not for the shortcomings with the cast and puzzles, but I think it's solid for Toys for Bob's first attempt.

I've been a crash fans for years as my first was crash2 and seeing the series keep getting games make me very happy to see the plot go rightI've been a crash fans for years as my first was crash2 and seeing the series keep getting games make me very happy to see the plot go right after 3.
But this game in my opinion is a live child of crash twinsanity and crash1. In the adventure you have crash's moveset from twinsanity without the long jump but the game often times feels like Toys for Bob was given the trilogy and player through crash1 and only gone and skimmed crash2 and 3. With their new mechanics like grindingits a double edge sword as it's a good way to keep levels inter connected but with how the lighting system works where especially in booty calls where the blind spot for you is in front of you as you wouldn't know where is and when you're suppose to jump. It feels cheap because how it just pubish you not knowing what's next especially when it wants you to be on your toes. This game isn't Darksouls but this game feels like it with how crash controls.
With design of levels hits an awkward situation. As level design is densely better than wrath of context it feel off as well having boxes being out of view and have search for it be more prevalent. The issue is when the game ask you how crash controls between going in and out of 2d and 3d section. 2d section feel like you're in a beat on up level as you still control him up and down it gives a simple jump on a box a mannerism just by how you set crash up for it. This kind of design can work if it made can make obstacles more easy to read. You look into the second world where the game shows how fore is going to be the big obstacle in this but since it blends so easy to the background where it feels like a sucker punch to your face if you're not ready for it.
But with those set backs I still think the game is still god but feel like it needed to do is look back why people liked crash series in the first place. It was crash having tight controls where you were to blame if you lost a life. Overall how thoes grind sections work it feels like a mobile game with how cheap it can be. But with those blemishes it dose give up the sequel crash3 truly deserve with bringing tawna (TFB knows what they did z:]) and making the stakes bigger to make a game we don't forget from the series

The game is not bad, but:
- Levels don't feel as different as in Crash 2-3. There player had stages with 5 absolutely different levels (+ boss) with increasing difficulty... And in 4 you just have some wasteland levels, then some pirate levels etc.
- Missing animal bosses (well except tentacle thing). Only angry scientists from previous games.
- The game doesn't show whole CB universe. It doesn't answer typical fan questions like "Where's original Tawna?" or "What happened to Crunch Bandicoot before Wrath of Cortex?"
- Artstyle is normal and music is not bad, but not catchy.

While it does look good and the cutscene animations are fantastic, the game falters when trying to overcomplicate it’s simple working controls with an array of gimmicks that with more time or less of them could have been implemented much better. Levels are far too long and contain too many boxes. You will almost always miss 1 or 2 boxes unfairly hidden and while you’ll be motivated to try again at first, this happens EVERY level. Checkpoints are terribly placed and are either too close or too far from each other. The flashback and inverted levels will hurt your eyes to play due to their filters(more so on inverted levels). With almost everything being impossible to obtain, most casual and even above average gamers will be watching the full completion endings online while the more hardcore players will be consulting guides. Underneath all the impossible reward conditions, bad overcomplicated controls, and overloaded gimmicks there is a decent platformer to be played if you're just playing the levels and not trying to 100% them, because it's just not worth the time it demands to do it all. If you absolutely GOTTA HAVE CRASH, wait for a big sale or just whip out the old PS1 Crash 2 and 3.

Full Score Breakdown

Story: 5/10 - A recycled gather masks story. This time, they’re dimensional masks.

Graphics: 8/10 - Very good looking and very well animated.

Sound: 7/10 - Mostly solid voice acting and ok background music.

Stability: 7/10 - Some rare frame dropping and glitching into stuff. Long load times.

Gameplay: 3/10 - Solid controls when not wearing the dark matter mask, riding polar, being anyone who isn't Crash or Coco, riding rails, and when not on ice. Most Gems are far too hard to obtain due to ridiculous conditions and Platinum Relics are near impossible to get.

Fun Factor: 4/10 - Fun at first, especially if you're just blasting through the game and not worrying about 100%. Not nearly as fun when trying to 100% and making it to the end of every level still missing 1 box.

Game Vs Service: 9/10 - A bit of multiplayer for relic times and preorder/digital incentives.

Start To Finish: 1/10 - Can be blown through in under 10 hours.

Longevity: 4/10 - With how impossibly hard it is to fully complete this game, some will be here for a long time while others(like myself) will be turned off by the idea of wasting so much time.

Worth: 4/10 - Absolutely not worth $60. Grab on sale for $25 or less.

Perfect mix of old and new

Wow, this has to be one of the best platformers ever made. It may never get the same accolades as a Mario game, but with its old school difficulty, this brought me back to my childhood in a way that modern nintendo games (with the exception of DK: Tropical Freeze) do not. At the same time, it smartly modernizes the crash bandicoot formula in a way that respects the originals while still being innovative. There have been complaints of how secretive many of the crates are, and the lack of handholding, but for those who grew up in the NES era, where games didn’t apologize for being tough as nails, this will be a refreshing challenge in a sea of watered down mediocrity. One of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Also, heads up. Take your time exploring the levels before trying to get all the crates. Lots of tricky hidden ones.

I’m gonna start this review off with a bit of an anecdote: back in June of 2019, shortly after its release, I reviewed “Crash Team RacingI’m gonna start this review off with a bit of an anecdote: back in June of 2019, shortly after its release, I reviewed “Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled,” and in the final sentence of the review, I suggested that Activision, after two successful “Crash Bandicoot” remakes, try their hand at a new, wholly original “Crash Bandicoot” game. After all, while that game, along with the “Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy,” were great titles, we hadn’t gotten an entirely original game in the franchise since 2008’s polarizing “Crash: Mind over Mutant.” Clearly, Activison’s studios knew what they were doing when it came to crafting faithful “Crash Bandicoot” titles, so I was more than ready to see what kind of new adventures they could take the orange marsupial in. Little did I think that just about a year later, they’d come forward and announce the next game, fittingly titled “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!,” and let me just say, you’re damn right it is. The second entry in the series to bear the “Crash Bandicoot 4” name in some way (after 2001’s “Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex”), this game caught my eye as soon as the previews came out, and it was one I was very much looking forward to. And let me tell you, it’s every bit as glorious as I hoped it would be.
“Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!” brings back the classic “Crash” gameplay, and does a marvelous job of translating it to a new generation. Crash’s movement feels fluid, the platforming elements are strong as usual, and this game certainly brings the challenge. Believe me when I say, no matter whether you go for everything in the game or not, this game is going to kick your ass in more ways than one. Fortunately, though, the challenge is welcome, and even if the game gets difficult, it’s not an unfair type of difficult: it’s a test, sure, but the challenge feels smart and the level design is so brilliant, you’ll feel rewarded when you get through the levels. The game also features plenty of new content to keep things fresh, chief among them being the new masks. These masks bring new powers to Crash that allows for great new ways of platforming, and they also help the creators get even more creative and exciting with the level design. Furthermore, the addition of new types of levels, like N. Verted levels and Flashback levels are great, as are the numerous gameplay styles brought to the forefront with new playable characters, like Tawna, Dingodile, and even Neo Cortex himself. All of these characters have their own charm to them, and are an absolute blast to play. Visually, the game is beautifully designed, the environments are wonderful to look at, and the game is bursting out of the screen with colors. Beyond how wild the gameplay goes, the visual design is equally as inventive. And while the story may not be the main focus of “Crash” games, I enjoy this game’s many callbacks to Crash’s previous adventures, and I think the characters and dialogue are charming and hilarious.
I honestly can’t think of any negatives about the game that really detract from my enjoyment of it. Yes, the game is extremely challenging, but as I mentioned, it’s a welcoming challenge. It’s not packed with “fake difficulty,” it’s a game that’s smartly crafted and, as difficult as it can get, it feels rewarding when you do a great job.
Overall, “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!” is everything that I hoped it would be, and it’s exactly what “The Wrath of Cortex” should’ve been almost two decades ago. It’s the finest “Crash Bandicoot” game that I’ve played since “Crash Bandicoot: Warped!,” and it establishes that Crash is back and better than ever. It’s a beautiful, faithful, unforgettable adventure for the orange marsupial, and it makes me happy to see how excellent of a job Toys For Bob did with this game. It’s truly amazing, and beyond being one of the best games I’ve played this year, it’s far and away one of the best entries in this great series. I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here. Also, hey, Activision, so I’m thankful you answered my request for a new “Crash” game from the “Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled” review, and if you don’t mind, I have just one more plea for you guys. I don’t want to ask for too much, so I’ll make it quick, but…can “Spyro” be next?
Final rating: 10 out of 10 “Fantastic”

This is definitively The Greatest Crash Bandicoot Game Ever Made ™.

I say this as someone whose first video game series was Crash and believed that we’d never see a Crash game as good as Naughty Dog’s again. Crash 4 takes the best elements of the original 3 platformers (including many excellent aspects of Crash 1 that were abandoned even by Naughty Dog) and builds on top of them. The art style is striking and brilliant. The animation is full of personality consistent with and surpassing the originals, and each level is beautifully detailed. Extra playable characters are a wonderful addition and totally keep in line with the feel of the rest of the game. Mandatory parts of the game are a solid challenge, but the bonus stages and optional content are on another level. These segments will push your Crash platforming ability to the limits and are immensely satisfying to complete. This is a beautiful game full of personality and excellent content. It’s clear that the developers loved what they were making and I love it too.

Boss fights are also at their prime in this game and done much better than any other crash game.

Crash 4 looks absolutely stunning and every environment looks new and distinct from the others and will show set pieces that will have you in disbelief that this is a crash game. In the level offbeat many easter eggs and such can be seen on the rooftops and in the background, rewarding players with a keen eye.

This game does come with a small handful of negatives such as the framerate chugging a bit on a base PS4, and some crates being almost impossible to find unless you spin every nook and cranny of the level or give up and google it.

But other than that, this is personally the best platformer I have played within the past decade.

If there's any gameThe first major complaint I have is the controls, they're not smooth at all, one slight move and it's a full commitment. If there's any game in this series I'd like every Crash game to aspire to, it'd be Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped (NOT the remake - the actual game on PS1.) Playing during those rail gliding parts in missions or Tawna levels can be fun at times but most of it (especially if you're trying to 100% the game) is ridiculously hard. There's a difference between difficult level design and trolling. My next major issue is the redesigns. I feel like instead of sticking to what could have been a direct continuation of the game from Warped, they've gone with this late 2000's punk/early 2010's 3D Nickelodeon animated design rather than a classic look. I appreciate the efforts in making characters like Tawna more active and relevant to the game/story (as shown by the trailers) but to make her design to be a more Mad Max style of a look doesn't feel like crash. It reminds me of how the audience looked at Crash Bandicoot characters after the Twinsanity/Tag Team Racing games. Overall to summarize, I'm going to simply say the gameplay could be a lot more fluid and have a more free like feeling as well as the redesigns not looking to well but it's nice to at least see an effort by Activision to reboot the series but at the same time continue on from Warped. Since the ps3 era, I've been hoping to see a new Crash game but was a little let down at this one. Fortunately seeing what Naughty Dog did to The Last of Us franchise, I'm glad it's no longer in their hands but I think Vicarious Visions should have been the one to create a new game/story instead of Toys for Bob Expand

Definitely the most true to the trilogy since the trilogy itself. It's much closer in gameplay to crash 1 and 2 than 3 though, which isn't a bad thing.

I'd probably give it a 10 if not for two things:

1. Hit boxes on crates during vehicle segments feel absurdly small. There are times where you hit a group of 4 head on and just straight up miss two or three.

2. Like 70% of levels have one or two absurdly well hidden boxes, meaning you're gonna end up with "n - 1" boxes a lot of the time during your first playthrough

Otherwise excellent game and is honestly my favorite in the series

The biggest problem is the padding, you STILL need to go through most levels rwice if you want to 100% the game, it's impossible to do it in one go. The death animations(a crash staple) are toned down compared to the original trilogy, most deaths will result in the same thing which is a shame. Overall it's okay but not great. Expand

All 4 masks are extremely funCrash Bandicoot 4 introduces a ton of new gameplay elements, while still keeping the feel of the original games. All 4 masks are extremely fun to use and it really makes the game more fun and interesting. The levels are all really creative and fun, it's a huge step up from old sequels. It's also very difficult, even if you aren't playing on retro mode the final level and final boss will take a long time for you to beat. I think both new and old players will love this game and I'm giving it 9/10. I wish they would have had more levels where you could play as the new characters though, seems like a waste to introduce them and then only have a few levels where you can play as them. I also wish the game was a little longer and the bosses were more challenging, the game took me like 5 hours to beat and I only struggled with the final boss. Expand

But it’s easier to detail my criticisms than praise, and I need to get it off my chest. If the game was terrible then I’d just bin it, but it’s because there’s so much good there that I really want to love it, but there are just things in the way making me unable to.

The main word I would use to describe it is tedious.

This is coming from a huge Crash fan. I’ve completed Crash 1 & 2 – & 3 to a lesser extent – countless times, and it seems Crash 4 is determined to force me to do the same for it just to get 100% once. The n-verted versions of the levels are not fun in their own way and basically just force you to complete all the levels again. I lose quite a bit of enjoyment in a game I’m playing when I accept that I’m probably not going to fully complete it ever, which is something I would definitely expect from a Crash game.

Finding on my first playthrough, while getting all the boxes I see, that there are almost always 1-5 boxes missed is far from thrilling. I like collectathons, but unlike with for example Banjo or Spyro, where you can search around for those elusive notes, you have to do the whole level again just to realise (or not) that there’s a random box just out of sight. In particular, you have to do the bonuses again. I did like that lots of the bonuses are legitimately challenging and great platforming, but once you’ve cracked it once completing it again several times is just tedious.

For completion they also want you to get all the boxes on each level without dying. It’s a bit annoying having to do that in Crash 1, but the levels in this game are much longer. And it doesn’t even feel like they thought about this; there is absolutely no reason you should have to wait for a 30+ second loading screen every time you have to restart the level (even if you haven’t reached a checkpoint yet, unlike Crash 1), when it could just put you back to that start like in a time trial; given how long and difficult lots of the levels are the time trials are also a big ask.

The biggest problem I have with the actual gameplay is the depth perception, which is way worse than even Crash 1; I think this is largely due to the camera angle being too low and far back. I found myself constantly using the double jump just to hover and ensure I was going to land where I planned, which doesn’t make for fun speeding through a level. They do add the big yellow circle below Crash to allow this to be possible, but I’d say it’s a bit of an ugly fix for the problem. It meant that I enjoyed the 2D sections much more than the 3D ones, and Crash isn’t supposed to be just a 2D platformer.

Playing through I also felt the level design was lacking variety. Yet when I thought about it there’s not really more in the other games, like in Crash 2 how there’s about 10 different level types each repeated 2 or 3 times; it probably just feels that way because the consecutive levels in each world feel similar, and they just go on too long.

I am going to review this from a completionist's angle

While I've enjoyed the game for the most part, I feel the developers really phoned it in with a lot of stuff.

Like the utter chore it can be on some levels to find every single last crate. I don't mind exploring and keeping my eyes open for visual clues or little details at the corner of the eye but some levels just went too far with hiding stuff in obscene and really cheap places and blind angles.
These are not fun to track down, they are tedious and will just force you to go through levels over and over hoping to find something new, like in Wolfenstein where you just run around and press every wall in the game hoping to find something.
I also feel its really lazy that the side casts' levels will suddenly just cut off and make you repeat a large portion of another level you've already beaten with Crash. That's just lazy padding.
And speaking of padding, making the player have to play through the very same identical level (Besides a filter and the level being mirrored) to get all the gems..... Why... Why would I want to do the exact same thing I just did but again... LIke its Ghouls'n Ghosts or something.

I think the boiling point for me was at a later stage in the game where you have to ride on a creature and get ONE shot at hitting tons of crates along the way, accompanied by the worst ever hitboxes in the world. I is infuriating to do the box challenge on this level and you better pray that you didn't miss a single other box before that point.
And if you are a mad enough person to try and attempt this while doing the Perfect No death challenge then I think I'd rather just put a gun in my mouth.

If this section had been at the start of the level, I could MAYBE have forgiven it but the fact that you first have to play through the whole level up to that last point before even getting a shot at it is inexcusably bad game design. They could have just separated the two part into two stages and the game would have been SO much better.
Oh.. what's that?... it IS in 2 part... but you just have to do that horrendous last part TWICE.
What in the world could any sane being be thinking?!

In short
The game is fun if you are just playing through it casually but trying to complete the challenges and you'll have a miserable time.
Also, why is it that time trial challenges can be started over on a whim but restarting the actual level have to take up to 40 seconds?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
