CyberConnect2 fulfills all our expectations with Demon Slayer Hinokami Chronicles. The title is great for fans of the manga and newcomers alike, however, there is definitely room for improvement.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles faithfully recreates popular anime Demon Slayer as a competitive 3D action fighting game. While the amount of playable characters and the exploration part leave room for improvement, there’s a lot to love here for fans of the source material.

It's a shame the gameplay is so similar to past games and the exploration segments so bland, because the recreation of the anime it's truly spectacular; the best to date in a CyberConnect2 game. Fans of Kimetsu no Yaiba will probably enjoy it, even with the severe lack of content.

For fans of anime fighting games, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is a compelling experience. Even if you're a newcomer to the series, this is a game that is fun to play, with a bold narrative that grips you early on. It may feel light at times, but it's a fine example of what CyberConnect2 does best.

When I look at Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles I keep seeing the usual formula that Cyberconnect2 has been using for years of anime tie-in fighters. It’s still an enjoyable and fun fighting game, if you care enough to get into its more obscure mechanics, but it could have been much better with more emphasis on a proper training mode and a more fleshed out campaign. Nonetheless, it’s also one of the prettiest game ever developed by the software house that created .Hack and a proper celebration of the bombastic action sequences of the original animated series produced by world-known animation studio Ufotable.

This is a very faithful adaptation of the anime and that’s something fans will love, even if unfortunately it’s very limited gameplay-wise.

As a fan of Demon Slayer series you’ll probably have an easier time communicating with the game, but for anybody else there isn’t much entertainment on offer here as long cut scenes and shallow gameplay really hurt the overall experience.

The game it self does an amazing job of adapting the combat and art style. The combat is simple however also has a lot of strategy behind it, unlike games like My Hero Ones Justice 1&2 the story mode is much more in depth and they did a great job of adapting cut scenes into game. Being able to run on roof tops and than drop into a fight with a demon is a really great feeling. I put this game at a 8 out of 10. The only thing keeping the score at an 8 is the lack of a true arcade mode, the demon characters added as free dlc feel pretty overpowered... Overall if you like or love Demon Slayer or need a fun arena fighter to play this game is great. Just don't pay 60$ for it go to a store and buy it there for like 40$ Expand

Let us get the bad out of the way first: There is a lack of game modes, and it could have used more content.
That said, let us get to the positives: The Game is actually pretty great! It is a arena fighter in the style of the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series, but with improved controls and battle mechanics. You have 3 different Ground Attack Strings, Neutral (which can be cancelled with either a special attack or a dash cancel to combo into other attacks), tilt up (The string ends with a attack that sends the opponent into the air, which can also be followed up) and tilt down (a strong combo ending move, that will hard knock down the opponent, making it unable to combo after it, but gives you room to recover Special meter, gain distance or simply use it if you have no more meter to spend to extend the string anyway). You also have a strong attack by tilting forward and press attack the same time, which can be charged and gives Super Armor during the charge up and most of the animation, but can be punished hard if whiffed.
Each character also has access to three special attacks, neutral, tilt, and guard + special attack.
You also have a Super Meter that can be raised up to three bars. You can use that to either Boost yourself and/or use an ultimate.
Ultimates will always use up all bars you currently have. You only need one to activate and use it, but the more meter you have, the stronger the ultimate becomes.
Or you use it for "Boost". "Boost"costs one meter and it will buff all your attacks for some time and it will replenish your blue special metter that you have to use for special attacks and dodge cancels, and you movement speed increases. You will also get a special combo finisher for your ground neutral combo, however it will cause a knock down so you can't combo after it, but it deals good damage as has quite some reach!

Using "Boost" costs one Super meter. So if you have 2 Meters you can use "Boost", and also an ultimate. It will be just a level one ultimate, but it will be much stronger thanks to surge.
Or you can use your second Meter to go into "Surge" mode.

"Surge" is like the Awakening State in the Ninja Storm series. "Surge" can be used after "Boost", it won't last as long but it will give you infinite Special Meter, and further boosts your power. If you have 3 full Super Meters, you can use "Boost" first, use it until it is shortly from running out, then use "Surge" to stay buffed and then you can still use a Level 1 Ultimate that is almost as strong as a Level 3 Ultimate.

You also can use Assist characters! The assist you choose can use two of his three special attacks (usually neutral special and tilt special), depending on if you input the Assist character button on neutral or when you tilt it. You can also hold the Assist button to tag switch with your partner. Each Assist attack or switch cost 1 Bar of the assist bar, of which you have two bars. Finally you can also use two assists bars when you are trapped in an opponents combo to have your assist save you from the combo.

The Story Mode of the game is pretty nice! The graphics and animations are beautiful and look almost like being directly out of the anime. Also pretty much everything is inside this game in terms of story, and what is not in the ingame cutscenes comes with little "Skits" that show what else happened.

The Roster consists of 11 Character, 1 alternate version of the main character with a completely different moveset and 6 "School" variants for some characters, that are having the same moveset as the regular ones but with different ultimates. SO the roster is "Technically" 18 Characters. Not the biggest roster but still a good one!

Additionally, we will get 6 FREE DLC Characters too, so free content is also coming!

Overall the game is great, but if you are not a Fan, and just casually enjoy the series, I say wait until it gets a but cheaper or get it used, since the lack of content might be off putting to some. For actual fans this is a must have!

Ah yes, Cyber Connect 2, my favorite.. oh wait, was my last favorite anime game company out there.
Remember when Anime fighting games had their unique quirk in battles unlike regular fighting games?
Yea me 2, it was on PS2 and disappeared since.
Let's quick review this, since this game offers little than what it's suppose to do.

    - Story
Same as Naruto game's story mode, where you have literally walking levels to points and click stuff.
This added with QTE min-games.. and the same battles with the same QTE animations.
It's easy and you can defeat the story while sleeping.. it's honestly amazing just how the game industry has fallen from such quality.
Just leave the story after you finish it and play the main feature which is.. well battling, Ya know.

    - The character selection
One of the main things an anime game needs, is a BIG cast of characters to play with, to fulfill your dream battle you never got to see in the anime/manga.
Sadly, CC2 doubled down on that part, keep in mind these guys HAD of characters to create since the 1st season aired.
The has, from the time I write this review, 18 FREE characters which DOES NOT INCLUDE the school characters, which have essentially the same moveset as the OG characters.... that's a dirty move CC2, you once had 3 types of Naruto and Sasuke, but at least eat iteration had a different moveset and alt-forms, now you double down again in you quality?
These guys couldn't come up with a special moveset for Kanao, but for Murata, a dull looking character made the comedy moveset. Just great.
And what about Rui's spider siblings? No moveset for them? Or the drummer Demon?
Or how about giving all the other lower rank demons a filler moveset?
Gee, I don't wanna work hard for even slightly hard, let's just copy + paste the main characters with "KAWAII GAKUSEI" outfits....
    Dissapointing

    - Gameplay
The only part that is goo-- wait what am I talking about? this is again just another downgrade from the Naruto games.
While it has it's own mechanics, as an Anime fighting game, it lacks in variety in gameplay styles between each character.
Not to mention that CC2 could have build a complete new fighting game that was 100% different from their Naruto games, but no, it actually has the same base meta game from these games,
It's just that now there's no substitute justu and your buddy rescues you from a combo.

The game doesn't make me feel like I'm playing as a demon slayer or a Demon, it feels like just another Naruto game with a Demon Slayer mod on top of it.
Naruto had it's "animeish" reasons for it's mechanics, where as Demon slayer has no feature that simulates anything that is related to being a demon slayer.

    Summary..
Wake me up, when an anime game is declared to be better the DBZ BT3, okay?
    Until then... breath or whatever
