DOOM 3 is the ideal choice for virtual reality and its environments have never felt so vivid. The game remains an old school shooter, however the main campaign and the two expansions will give you a great reason to dust off your Aim controller. This adaptation is not perfect, but we should count our blessings.

Doom 3 is still a great horror experience, and the new HUD and controls are perfect for VR. But it´s been more than 15 years since the game was originally released, and some elements feel outdated.

This classic horror experience turns out to be even more immersive - and intense - in virtual reality. Beware though, at times the image quality can be rather blurry.

DOOM 3 VR is also able to breathe new life into one of the game’s more divisive facets: the horror. While jump scares are constant, and as annoying as ever, the VR succeeds in placing you on Mars in a way DOOM 3 has never previously been able to accomplish. This means all of the ambient audio, the lighting, the abrupt discomfiting silence – everything contributes to the creepiness of the experience to an unprecedented level. It provides an opportunity to appreciate all of the things that DOOM 3 did well all those years ago, without having to carry the baggage of defining the series moving forward. And it’s better for it. Just don’t expect much of a visual upgrade, as thanks to the headset’s limitations, things more or less look the same as when the game first launched.

Doom 3 makes its debut on PlayStation VR with an edition that clearly shows the signs of the years that have passed since the title's debut, as well as the effects of a rather superficial adaptation work, with repercussions especially on the playful side of the experience. Despite everything, however, Doom 3 VR Edition still proves to be an enjoyable product, largely due to the merits of the particular horrific characterization of the title, which on PSVR preserves and amplifies the effectiveness of its particular atmospheres.

After insanely intense Doom Eternal it was somewhat strange to revisit much calmer Doom 3. Back in the day I loved its slower pace and horror atmosphere though, so I was excited to return to the UAC facility. It is still a decent game, but it’s quite ugly even compared to other PS VR shooters and it was hell-bent on giving me motion sickness (there’s no option to replace fluid movement with teleportation). Doom 3: VR Edition is a serviceable port of a decent shooter that was never intended to be played in VR. While there’s undeniable novelty to seeing id’s spookier take on the series realised in full 3D and some combat sequences do work better inside the headset, the game’s unable to separate itself from its flatscreen foundations and never plays to the platform’s real strengths. It’s a bit of VR junk food, then; easy to digest and enjoyable while it lasts but, in the grand scheme of VR gaming, you can do a lot better. Maybe it’s time we accepted Doom’s demonic antics are best left on our PCs and consoles.

I’ve waited nearly 30 years but finally got to experience what I always wished for. Is it perfect? No...some glitches and poor level design make this sometimes feel cheap but it’s still a hell of a ride and you really get the feeling this is the experience ID always wanted to give you with DOOM3. For $30 this is worth every penny for PSVR owners. Expand

Amazing! We are lucky to have such a great Doom 3 VR port so late in the PS VR lifecycle. It’s hard to believe that this game is 17 years oldAmazing! We are lucky to have such a great Doom 3 VR port so late in the PS VR lifecycle. It’s hard to believe that this game is 17 years old - the graphics look great in VR, I think the low PS VR resolution actually helps to cover up the aging graphics.
The game plays like a dream with the aim controller, unlike in Doom VFR where the aim controller chugged - as a result, Doom 3 VR is the more immersive game of the two.
The teleporting system from Doom VFR is gone - thank god.
The villain is memorable and keeps you driving to finally deliver an ass kicking of all time.
Doom 3 VR feels like an evolution on the Doom experience John Romero was trying to establish in 1993, this time with no music, making it a creepier atmosphere, all the classic guns (favs are chain gun and plasma gun - they’re huge and badass), and monstrous demons to make you feel like a real bada$$.
Things can get kind of annoying when monsters get too close and you can’t hit them, plus backtracking once you’ve completed an objective can leave you wandering around, but those are minor gripe methinks.
Honestly, this ranks up high with me along with Doom VFR, Borderlands 2 VR, and Skyrim VR - in my opinion all of which are remarkable and ahead of their time curios of the platform.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Even though the game sold well the journos didn't like all the dark and having to switch between gun and flashlight.. So now everything is bright, your never vulnerable and the lighting that use to lead you in gone, so it's easy to get lost..
The controls were also better in Doom VFR and the guns were not so high and in your face.
All that being said, it's cool AF to be in the Doom Marz facility in VR..
