It's a dream game for Dragon Ball die-hards, a great new way to test your skills for fighting game nuts and an all-around great experience for everyone else in between. The story and arcade modes present plenty of challenge and things to keep you occupied, and the roster is large enough to make no two battles feel the same. And, refreshingly, the online modes appeal to not just those who have immersed themselves in online battles for years, but newcomers and even just the mildly interested as well. At present time, the PS4 version looks to be the one to get due to a few issues with the Xbox One's online capabilities, but both versions perform even better than you might have hoped. For a game with nearly a full year of hype behind it, Dragon Ball FighterZ delivers in ways that will exceed even the most lofty of expectations. This is a fighting game for the ages.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a near-perfect fighting game that appeals to casual players without alienating veteran fighters. The dramatic finishes are a nice touch, the story is amusing and lengthy, if not repetitive at times, the visuals are beautiful, and there is enough content to satisfy any Dragon Ball fan itching for a good fight.
  3. Jan 23, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is the perfect marriage of source material enriched gameplay and original presentation. Ark System Works has created a fantastic experience that a wide audience of players and passionate fans are sure to enjoy.
  4. Jan 22, 2018
Finally, after years, a game has been realized that can best convey the intensity of the battles told by Dragon Ball.
  5. Jan 26, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ seamlessly blends accessibility and complexity, making for a feverishly-paced fighter that makes the learning process gradual and engaging, and gives casual players hours of worthwhile things to do solo and potentially turning fighting game fans on to the world of Dragon Ball. Even after dozens of hours in single-player, training mode, and online, I’m excited to keep digging into its combat and see just how many more gorgeous flashes and explosions I can cause. If I happen to blow up a few more planets along the way, all the better.
  6. Jan 30, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a beast. Deep and frantic tag team battle and the best tribute to Toriyama's work. One of the best fighting games in this generation.
  7. Jan 22, 2018
We don´t know if FighterZ is the best current fighting game, but it's definitely the most spectacular Dragon Ball game. Don´t let the frantic combat fool you: there are lots of mechanics and tricks to master.

A Dragon Ball fighting game that we’ve been waiting for since forever loosing hope along the way. It was designed with obvious deep understanding of the source material, visually it’s almost undistinguishable from the anime and it embodies the 'easy to learn, hard to master' rule, which makes it both interesting for BlazBlue veterans and accessible to newbies lured by the Dragon Ball license. One of the most complete fighting games you can hope to play. A challenging Arcade mode, a bespoke Story, and a comprehensive Training mode complement one of the most diverse genres in the genre. [Feb 2018, p.84]

The best Dragon Ball game to date. [Issue#197, p.70]
  11. Feb 20, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ truly is one of the best fighting games made in a long time hands down, so I'd suggest anyone who's into the genre get it sooner rather than later.
  12. Feb 15, 2018
This is one of the best fighting games in recent years, but most importantly – we're talking about the best anime tie-in game in the past 10 years. The lobby system is the only downside of this game, but other than that, the gameplay is super solid, the voice acting is amazing and the plethora of modes make it both engaging for fighting game veterans, and fun and accessible for newcomers and fans alike.
  13. Feb 14, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is what we want in a modern fighting game. The controls are easy to learn, but the game is deeper than you might think.
  14. Feb 14, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is born from what makes the DRAGON BALL series so loved and famous: endless spectacular fights with its all-powerful fighters. Partnering with Arc System Works, DRAGON BALL FighterZ maximizes high end Anime graphics and brings easy to learn but difficult to master fighting gameplay to audiences worldwide.
  15. 90
Just like Rocksteady did for Batman, Arc System Works has carried Dragon Ball to the upper echelon, crafting a tag-fighting game that captures not only the series' distinctive style but its spirit. FighterZ stands alongside other versatile, yet accessible, games like Marvel vs. Capcom with ease in what is the best fighting game in recent memory.
  16. Feb 7, 2018
In a nutshell, Dragon Ball FighterZ is the Dragon Ball game that fans have been waiting for. It doesn't have the pure character creation features of a Xenoverse title, but it makes up for it by being what is probably the first truly competitive Dragon Ball Z fighting game. The amazing graphics and impressive audio help sell the feeling of playing an episode of the anime, and it's one of the best-looking games on the market. The single-player content is good for a fighting game, but unlike Xenoverse, this is a game for those who are looking for competitive play first and foremost. It does that exceedingly well, and any fan of fighting games or Dragon Ball Z should find something to like here.
  17. Feb 7, 2018
Before playing FighterZ, I knew absolutely nothing about the Dragon Ball series. Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed the story so I can only imagine how fans of the franchise will react to the visual beauty and over-the-top mayhem. While the controls are easy to get to grips with, it still provides a tough challenge. In particular, the frustrations I had progressing in the Arcade Mode are a prime example of how difficult mastering FighterZ is. So, with that said, ending this review with a quote from Atari founder Nolan Bushnell seems fitting: “All the best games are easy to learn and difficult to master”. A famous videogaming motto that for me, sums up Dragon Ball FighterZ perfectly.
  18. 90
Dragonball FighterZ is the first truly essential video game based on the classic license. It bridges the gaps between fan service, accessibility and complexity incredibly well, while looking fantastic in the process. Ark System Works have not only demonstrated their technical prowess in the gameplay department, but have also shown an immense love and understanding for the franchise in terms of attention to detail. If you love Dragonball Z, then you will love this. If you don’t, then you will find a great fighting game here despite that.
  19. 90
Successfully bridging the gap between the casual and hardcore crowds, Dragon Ball FighterZ is an excellent, gorgeous fighter that can draw you in, whether you're a fan of the franchise or not.
  20. Feb 2, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is the pinnacle of Dragon Ball games, landing as powerfully as a Goku’s Spirit Bomb.
  21. Feb 2, 2018
The combination of the huge experience Arc Systems Works has in the genre with the wonderful art and world of Dragon Ball delivered a great 2D fighting game that is masterfully crafted for purists and casual gamers alike.
  22. Feb 1, 2018
A wonderful traditional fighting game with fantastic (online) gameplay and stunning visuals, that disappoints only a bit in its small roster of characters.
  23. Feb 1, 2018
The fighting itself is absolutely glorious for both fans and non-fans of the series, and for both casuals and hardcore fighting gamers. You just can't lose with Dragon Ball FighterZ.
  24. Jan 30, 2018
FighterZ is complex and distinct enough to be enjoyed by fighting game competitors, but there's no question that it's been designed to tap into the hearts of Dragon Ball's most dedicated fans, and no doubt those same qualities will win people over who've never given the series a chance.
  25. Jan 30, 2018
The Best 2D Dragon Ball fighting game ever, also one of the great fighting games of 2018 in PS4, Xbox One and PC. Repetitive campaign with a disappointing plot, but solid as a rock in the game mechanics. An astonishing representation of the Akira Toriyama's manga by the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue creators.
  26. Jan 30, 2018
This is by far the best Dragon Ball fighting game. The gameplay is fluid, explosive and fast, just as it should be. The game looks great and offers something for everyone. It is easy to step in for newcomers but hard to master. Simply a must own.
  27. Jan 29, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ manages to make every player happy: it's the kind of experience that's deep and challenging, yet at the same time affordable for newcomers. The combat system is a little too focused on the attack, and it's not possible to break combos, but Arc System Works made a remarkable work here, the perfect entry point for everyone who considered Street Fighter V or Guilty Gear too technical and complex.
  28. Jan 29, 2018
2018 is off to a strong start with an Dragon Ball FighterZ early contender for this year’s best fighting game. By shattering some boundaries, Dragon Ball FighterZ has combat that’s more than worth getting into, but also a diverse roster and some phenomenal presentation. The Story Mode could have been improved if it were more streamlined, but it’s a mere blemish on an otherwise spectacular game.
  29. Jan 29, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a literal blast to play. The game's visuals (the attention to detail, the amazing style and the colorful cast) are clearly it's most impressive feature, but the fighting itself is no slouch either. The experience could really do with a better and more interesting story mode, but nearly everything else in this game is superbly well made.
  30. Jan 28, 2018
This is a dream come true. Everything we can expect from a Dragon Ball game is here, and not only it looks amazing, but it also plays wonderfully. One of the first must-have from 2018.
  31. Jan 27, 2018
This is a gleaming example of how to craft a fighting game that feels like it has its arms open for everyone to enjoy.
  32. Jan 26, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ has the gameplay foundations to usher it into the echelons of some of today’s premiere tournament-worthy fighting games.
  33. Jan 26, 2018
Utterly stunning in motion and effortlessly capturing the essence of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a masterful video game adaptation. Its combat system is relentlessly entertaining, fusing anime sensibilities with traditional, competitive fighting game mechanics, and its accessible controls allow anyone to get in on the action. Meanwhile, the online portion of the release is robust, and really sets the bar for social interaction when it comes to fighting games. Dragon Ball FighterZ is pretty much the best anime fighting game ever made.
  34. Jan 26, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 2D fighting game developed by Arc System Works and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. So far it shall be considered as the best Dragon Ball videogame thanks to its graphic design accuracy, adrenalinic gameplay and awesome multiplayer.
  35. Jan 24, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is an easy to learn and spectacular fighting game. Despite its seeming simplicity, it has a lot of hidden potential for experienced players to uncover.
  36. Jan 24, 2018
This is truly the best Dragon Ball fighter I’ve played since the Super Famicom imports. It’s pure fighting bliss that makes you feel as OP as the characters on the show by adding so much style and flare. Longtime fans and newer fans who may just be familiar with Dragon Ball Super will find something to enjoy here if they’re fans of fighters.
  37. Jan 23, 2018
In spite of the let down imposed by the Story mode, Dragon Ball FighterZ is easily the best DBZ branded game on the market thanks to an immaculate respect to the original work of Akira Toriyama.
  38. Jan 23, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is one of the best Fighting games that holds an Anime License. The package brings us great visuals, fun gameplay and a rich content making it one of the most memorable experiences in this genre.
  39. Jan 23, 2018
The definitive Dragon Ball fighting game, bar none. Arc System Works have created a game which walks across many a fine line, blending style with substance and accessibility with reverence for the source material. It’s wild, it rocks my dragon and it sets a benchmark for the series that proudly enters the domain of fight game gods.
  40. Jan 22, 2018
A fantastic fighting game for newcomers and fans of the genre alike, filled with knowing nods to the fans of the show. Dragon Ball FighterZ is a genuine delight to play and to watch.
  41. Jan 22, 2018
An exquisite feeling fighter that is both approachable and deep. Time will tell if it has staying power, but it's the best use of the Dragon Ball Z name in quite some time.
  42. Jan 22, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is possibly the greatest Dragon Ball game of all time, and already one of the best fighting games of the year, if not the best. Great fighting and amazing visuals collide in this excellent anime fighter.
  43. Jan 22, 2018
A dream come true for Dragon Ball fans, but also a highly competent fighting game that is a front runner for the best fighter of the generation.
  44. Jan 22, 2018
For a fighting game fan this is obviously the best Dragon Ball game ever made. Its combat system is a magnificent revision of the Marvel VS mechanics, with a lot of hidden complexity and brilliant limitations.
  45. Jan 22, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is an incredible fighting game, with a rock-solid and spectacular combat-system, and the unique Dragon Ball Universe behind it. Competitive and fun, except for the not so brilliant story mode, is an absolute must-have for both the fans of the saga and the fighting game lovers.
  46. Jan 22, 2018
For Arc System Works, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a chance at real mainstream success. The Guilty Gear games are universally excellent, and have a dedicated fanbase, but their hardcore nature meant they always lost to the Street Fighters and Tekkens of the world when it came to sales. The Dragon Ball license could be what gets the masses interested in the studio’s particular brand of air-dashing, spectacular combat.
  47. Jan 22, 2018
While there have been many fighting games based on the Dragon Ball franchise, Dragon Ball FighterZ marks a modern approach through the means of fast-paced action. From its breathtaking visuals to ease of gameplay mastery, the new fighter is a good stepping stone to expand the fan base of the genre. However, it may not satisfy players who are looking for complexity.
  48. Mar 5, 2018
Never before has a game felt and played like Dragon Ball to this extent. Both hardcore fighting-game fans and casual players are in for a treat.

Stunning and full of personality, this is a Dragon Ball game that has something for everyone. [March 2018, p.73]
  50. Jan 26, 2018
An outstanding fighting game that does almost everything perfect. It's beautiful to see, easy to play, but difficult to master and has a lot of game modes... But there are little mistakes made here, like its low difficulty and some characters that are too similar. Despite that, one of the best games in its genre in a while.
  51. Jan 22, 2018
The great presentation is one thing. What makes Dragon Ball FighterZ so good is the fine-tuning of its mechanics and its thought-out balancing.
  52. Dragon Ball FighterZ is one of the best fighting games in the genre. While it's gameplay is simple, it's still a lot of fun.
  53. Feb 14, 2018
Our wish has been granted: this is the best Dragon Ball game ever made. Dragon Ball fighters look best when they fight and this game looks so good, it almost makes you forget the anime show.
  54. Feb 5, 2018
Dragon Ball as a series has always forefronted epic battles. In each episode of the cartoon, godlike warriors transformed the landscape in fantastic one-on-one fights with ease. In FighterZ, anyone can feel like that in any fight. I’ve been waiting for a Dragon Ball game like this ever since I first saw the cartoon in grade school, and I’m so happy this day has come.
  55. Jan 30, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a mandatory purchase for every fan of anime. The story-based campaign keeps you entertained for many hours, and fighting with friends - thanks to a user-friendly combat system, beautiful graphics and high dynamics - will definitely appeal to both rookie and advanced players.
  56. 85
If you’re looking for a fighter, there is simply nothing better on the market than Dragon Ball FighterZ in terms of what it offers as a 2D, high action brawler.
  57. Jan 29, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ has the depth more dedicated players will crave, but it doesn't stop itself from being a fun experience for everyone. Much like the series it stems from, the core of the series is based on a simple premise with deeper themes for those who wish to explore it fully. But it's got a lot of filler.
  58. Jan 22, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a very complete fighting game and lived up to the expectations that a saga such as Dragon Ball generates. The essence of Toriyama’s franchise is portrayed with great quality in every character and their moves.
  59. Jan 22, 2018
Between the accessible auto combos, homing attacks, and simplified command inputs, Dragon Ball FighterZ is an inviting gateway into the world of fighting games for newcomers — whether you’re a Dragon Ball fan or not. Those easy controls can open the door to some spammy behavior, but just as often it’s satisfying in a way that does right by the Dragon Ball name. Dragon Ball FighterZ has enough depth and complexity to glow as brilliantly as a Super Saiyan.
  60. Jan 29, 2018
The visuals are fantastic and do the source material justice. The toned down fighting mechanics are a blast. But the weak AI in the redundant story mode and the occasional hiccup with matchmaking during the mostly lag free online battles still need to be addressed and cost dearly.
  61. Feb 1, 2018
Arc System Works are masters of crafting excellent 2D fighting games and Dragon Ball FighterZ is no exception. Its accessible yet rewarding fighting mechanics and stunning graphics definitely make it the first must-have fighter of 2018.
  62. Feb 7, 2018
An accessible yet thoroughly entertaining competitive fighter, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a game for low-levels and super-elites alike.
  63. Feb 5, 2018
Despite the cumbersome online and overly long story mode, Dragon Ball FighterZ is without question the best time we've had in a Dragon Ball game to date. It's such a delight to be able to play as characters who look and feel as powerful as they do in the source material. Yet even if you strip away the outer wrapping, there’s a completely solid and frantic fighting game underneath.
  64. Feb 5, 2018
Everything about this game seems to flow perfectly together. It's light, yet heavy. It's fun, yet serious. It has the style and feel of Guilty Gear, the craziness and fluidity of Marvel vs. Capcom, and the familiarity of Dragon Ball. All of these things blend together very nicely in order to create a game that can truly be enjoyed by everyone. I can play FighterZ any time with anyone and have an absolute blast with it. Whether you're a hardcore fan of the genre or not, this really is the fighting game you've been looking for.
  65. 80
With a varied character roster, stunning graphics and balanced gameplay, Dragon Ball Fighterz is a fantastic entry point for new players, and great fun for fans of the series.
  66. Jan 29, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is just as hectic and intense as the original series it’s based on, and plays excellent as well. Don’t let the license fool you though, this gem is fun even if you are not a die hard fan of either the series or genre.
  67. 80
Dragon Ball FighterZ is both an incredible game to look at and to play. Arc System Works has done right by the Dragon Ball name giving fans of the source material plenty to be happy about.
  68. 80
It's energetic, exciting, fast, and also highly technical. It's everything that a fighting game needs to develop a core of competitive players, and in that regard it's the best Dragon Ball game that has been produced in quite some time. But - and it's a big but - when I first saw this game in action I had hoped that the appeal of it would be broader than just to existing Dragon Ball fans, and the developers have really struggled in that regard. The game relies too heavily on you already loving the characters, and already understanding the logic and lore of the Dragon Ball universe, before it starts to open up and allow you to love it.
  69. Jan 22, 2018
It's difficult to remain neutral in in the face of Dragon Ball FighterZ: if on the one hand we have a magnificent and stunning transposition of the anime - technically and artistically really out of parameter - on the other hand we see some imbalances in the roster and a gameplay very difficult to master. This does not deny the title a place of excellence in the beat-em-up Olympus, as well as an unmissable opportunity for all Dragon Ball fans.
  70. Jan 22, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is undoubtedly the best Dragon Ball Z fighting game ever released. As the old cliché goes, it is easy to pick up and play and hard to master even if the all the characters share the same input. And it must also be pointed out that it's the prettiest anime video game ever made. Dragon Ball fans would do themselves a disservice by missing this game.
  71. Jan 22, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ has managed to prioritise competitive play while still packing in the hyper-stylised, fill-your-entire-screen special effects the franchise demands. The moves are super cool, and the fact they don’t obscure vital telegraphing is even cooler.
  72. Mar 13, 2018
The single player modes aren’t particularly engaging, and the broken online makes engaging in the multiplayer take way longer than it needs to. Those lucky enough to have a thriving local fighting scene are the real winners here until the servers are sorted out. FighterZ isn’t entirely my thing, but it’s easy to see that it’s as well-made, polished, and fanservicey as humanly possible.
  73. Feb 5, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is an excellent representation of the source material it is based on, with solid mechanics and plenty of variety, and offers just the sort of over-the-top mayhem that fans of the franchise should thoroughly enjoy.

Dragon Ball FighterZ feels like playing a Dragon Ball game built by the anime's biggest fan. For me, Dragon Ball FighterZ is the best tag-based fighting game since Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I can't think of higher praise. [Essential]
  2. Jan 22, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is an accomplished fighting game with a clear appreciation for its source material, providing frenetic action between larger-than-life characters ripped straight from the anime/manga series. Though its combo system may be simple on the surface, with many of its moves being universal across its characters, there's a great deal of complexity when it comes to successfully breaking out of a combo string, with timing being the key to victory.
  3. Jan 23, 2018
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a class act of a fighter and I'm looking forward to more additions to the game from Arc System Works. (Videl, Broly, Master Roshi, and Mr. Satan are begging to be added to the roster as are alternate costumes for existing fighters.) What's here is a complete package, with a fighting game that's fun for fans, but still has depth for masters.
  4. Jan 22, 2018
Whether or not you like fighting games or Dragon Ball, extremely dramatic villains and hench dudes with giant hair hurling fireballs at each other (all set to unceasing guitar solos) is kind of inherently enjoyable.

If you are a casual video game player, you will enjoy it. If you LOVE Dragonball like I do, you will enjoy this game... for about 5 hours. Then you will HATE IT.

    FAN SERVICE: 8.5/10
    Story: 7.5/10
    Story Gameplay: 6/10
Player Hub: 3/10 (You can't match with friends, see opponents Win/Loss ratio, and overall shallow player hub with only cosmetics.)

ONLINE GAMEPLAY: Absolutely horrid. I will say there was very little lag though, but my god that will not matter. With the "Newcomer Friendly" gameplay, it makes it almost impossible to play. You're opponent will spam the same moves.... over.... over... and over.... Sure if you "get good" you will learn to block certain attacks. However, combating designed game flaws does not equal enjoyment. Maybe if health bars were increased, and space was expanded it would be ok.

However, you have two imaginary walls on each side that your opponent will use to their advantage. There is a reason this particular style of gameplay has gone mostly to the wayside. You will consistently run into people who spam consecutive 64 hit combos with stacked ultimates or they use the borders to pop you up in the air while switching characters. It is truly infuriating. Sure I could spam the same defensive move to counter it over and over again, but WHERE IS THE FUN IN THAT????

Its an absolute spam fest, which is truly a shame since there is so many cool animations and cool fan service in this game. You may have watched the trailers, you may have watched the developers play the game, but that will not be your experience.

Rarely you are matched with a similar player who wants to enjoy the game for what it is, and those can be some really fun match-ups. You will also be paired with weaker opponents which can be fun so that you can do whatever you want... but thats 1/4. There is no real "skill" to this game.

The pacing of the fight takes away from all that could be great for this game. You will play this game for 2 days, and then you will never play it again. So, if you have $60 burning a hole in your pocket, and you want to drop the Zeni to get yourself immersed in Dragonball... Then go ahead. If you are a casual gamer who doesn't care about DragonBall, do not get this game!

After you get over the voice-overs and different color uniforms... it will wear thin. If you want Dragonball nostalgia with a TON of fan service, please go play Dragonball Xenoverse II,

Folks, DBFZ is good. the whole package feels crisp, but

    It's Guilty Gear.

I mean it's almost a skinned version of Guilty Gear Xrd revelator. It is basically the exact same game but without the option for the technical option for control over the character. The freakin' lobby is even the same....just DBZ'ish. Even the music is Guilty Gear.

    It's Guilty Gear.

Now I love Guilty Gear, always been one of my favorite fighters, and that means DBFZ is up there as well....but I am actually massively let down that they lifted the entire guilty gear system and pasted DBZ over it.

Look, if you've never played a Guilty Gear game; yea, I get it, DBFZ is awesome. The rest of us that have played Guilty Gear....seriously?

    I'm still flabbergasted.

    *Update 2/15/18

I've removed a point for the literal worst story mode I have ever played in my near 40 years playing video games. I have never been so bored in my entire life. Not only is it repetitive, but this thing thinks i'm gonna head back in to pick up nebulous story moments via the fights?

Unsightly and ultimately pointless other than unlocking Android 21. God it's so bad.
