Koei Tecmo has done a remarkable job of telling the many stories of the many people that make Romance of the Three Kingdoms such a compelling book and period of history, and the beautiful cinematic consistency makes it the most perfect realisation of everything Koei Tecmo has been aiming for with this series over many years now.

The fact of the matter is that Dynasty Warriors 9 works as an experiment. This is Omega Force’s first attempt at an open-world title, and though not every aspect is great, it is a package that over-delivers where it counts and that, at its core, retains and improves upon the original hack and slash experience.

Dynasty Warriors 9 does a very good job of making you feel part of a larger war that is happening all around you.

If you're into the idea of playing an open world game where its arcadey elements are entwined with therapeutic but sometimes dry exploration, give it a shot.

This is a big game. Sadly, it's not all of the highest quality. Sometimes less is more. [March 2018, p.94]

Dynasty Warriors 9 felt more like an experiment than a single, cohesive experience. At times it felt like Dynasty Warriors, sometimes an open world RPG, occasionally neither and sometimes both. But if Omega Force learns from this endeavor and buckles down for the next entry, the result could be spectacular.

Dynasty Warriors finally gets the overhaul it’s long been waiting for… and while it addresses a few old problems it creates just as many new ones.

I have played every Warriors/Musou game released in the west. Some are good, some are bad.
Being a longtime fan of the series I looked forward to Dynasty Warriors 9 quite a lot.

Started playing the game a couple of days ago and first impressions were really bad.
Horrible frame rate, worst voice acting since DW2, repetitive combat even by Warriors standard and overall a disappointing experience. I'm also not a big fan of open-world games anymore, since it's in every damn game nowadays. And the world in DW9 is kinda boring.
The only thing I could think of while playing the first hour was: "this is not the game I've been waiting for since DW8, almost 5 years ago".

But then the patch came out and the framerate got a lot better, and I gave it a few more hours, and oh boy the game got better. The combat is kinda smooth and the new combo system is quite nice. I like the way the story is handled, kinda interesting to see a new way of telling the same old story in Dynasty Warriors. The big open-world is still boring but it's starting to grow on me, especially since it's the only gameworld where I really feel like i'm taking part in a huge battlefield.

Even with it's ups and downs, I do respect Omega Force for trying something new.

It might not be the Dynasty Warriors 9 I wanted, and compared to Dynasty Warriors 8 it's a step back, but if you're a fan of Warriors/Musou like me, then give it a try. It gets better, you just gotta give it some time.

Just remember to change the voices to japanese or chinese.

This is absolutely the worst installment of the Warriors series. I've played every single Dynasty Warriors game including the Extreme LegendsThis is absolutely the worst installment of the Warriors series. I've played every single Dynasty Warriors game including the Extreme Legends and Empires spin offs and this is the only game series I've played that seems to get worse and worse. This game is so bad I beat the yellow turbans then quit cause how boring and bland the combat was on top of the fact I got the best weapon for my character literally after the Yellow turban rebellion which took away all difficulty being lvl 15 killing lvl 40's by the Great wall of China give me a break Koei.

-Cons Just about everything. Graphics, Disappointing combo system, Grapple Hook that literally lets you skip EVERYTHING. The whole weapon system is just bad insane drawn out running from A,B to C back to A. Every single area feels the same and very washed down and lazy.

-Pros Character Design I love they are pushing new characters but this game was poorly done.

I expected a lot from this but is so pathetic that they thought this game was what we wanted... This is the first game I will not buy Empires or Xtreme Legends.

Literally I wanna walk into Koei and Fire there whole team that worked on this game.

The devs have taken a flamethrower to everything that was good about DW in pursuit of making it an open world game. The graphics are spotty. The music soundtrack is decent at times but get repetitive at times. The character animations are often creepy.

The customization options are poor. DW9 is basically broken at this point and is riddled with major technical problems. Including a major bug which prevents you from finishing the chapter you're on. Then you have no choice except to start the chapter all over again from the beginning. Unacceptable!

Koei's priorities for DW9 seem to be in updating the photo mode and adding costumes rather than fixing this game. Which goes to show you how out of touch they are with their fan base. Hopefully DW10 drops open world and returns back to the previous story based modes.
