God Wars: Future Past offers a decent strategy RPG that keeps things straightforward by throwing away complex mechanics in favour of a well-built job system that calls back to the classic strategy RPGs, like Final Fantasy Tactics. If you enjoy the genre, I can see God Wars: Future Past being an entertaining title, but it’s harder to recommend for the casual fans, even with its less demanding strategy mechanics, because the story isn’t great, the battles can be similar due to some mundane and flat level design, and for people who adore great graphics, the dated visuals won’t do anything for them. Get past those problems and there is a solid strategy game at its heart.

Ultimately, while it's a little bit disappointing to see Kadokawa go with such a "safe" design for its return to the tactical RPG battlefield, there's enough in God Wars: Future Past's narrative and atmosphere to recommend it to someone on the lookout for a new Tactics-style title.

If you own a PlayStation Vita you are probably a fan of Japanese things and if you are in search of turn based combat, God Wars is for you. Classical in the setting and in the mechanics, not bringing something really new in the gameplay, but hard and long enough to satisfy the your thirst of square distance and hp - mp calculations. Don’t like the genre? Stay away.

If complex, entertaining battles float your boat, and you can tolerate the lack of diversions or deviations, then you’ll be in your nostalgic element with God Wars: Future Past.

God Wars: Future Past features basic gameplay and simplistic visuals but an intriguing, well told story based around Japanese folklore that makes it a worthwhile experience.

God Wars: Future Past is an SRPG which feels less future-facing and more like it’s stuck in the past. It does nothing to try and redefine the genre, but it does have a number of well executed mechanics including a compelling job system. SRPG fans should find just enough to like, and newcomers may also stumble across some tactical fun.

God Wars has a surprisingly cohesive job and skill system under the hood. However, the rest of the game falls short in too many places to make it an easy recommendation in the genre. If you can't get enough tactical RPGs, God Wars can be worth checking out but it's not a stand-out in the genre.

God Wars: Future Past is certainly a JRPG from another time, when the tactical genre was a mainstay on the Playstation 2 (and even has the aesthetics to match). If you've been craving another tactical title in your life, God Wars is a pretty safe choice.

I was at firstDefinitely way better than Kadokawa Games' previous tactical RPG, Natural Doctrine. Ignore most of the negative scores. I was at first skeptical towards this game but I was pleasently surprised. While I agree that most of the game's aspects were copied from other games, they aren't badly executed like you would you think. And besides, the only RPG that blatantly copies from other games with no original ideas is Akiba's Beat. Full Review »

There is a strange delay on cursor movements that can completely destroy game feel, the graphics are far too zoomed out in the Vita version for you to see (or read) most things, the storyline is your typical anime love story, and the voice acting is dire. This games only real claim to glory is that it copies several aspects from better games from years before, though not very well. Full Review »
