Even though it looks more like a mobile game rather than a full release for consoles and PC, this movie tie-in has its moments and we definitely acknowledge the fact that the developers tried something more than delivering just another "generic platformer" that is based on a Hollywood movie.

Even if you're playing this after you’ve seen the movie, it’s still bad. It’s even worse if you’re playing the game without knowing the context. In any case, Hotel Transylvania 3: Monsters Overboard is a game that needs to be avoided at all cost. It’s a waste of time and resources, for you and the studio that made it.

Going in, I knew nothing of the game as I hadn't researched it or seen the movies ahead of time. First off, I found this game to be a low-budget Pikmin clone. I tried to play the Pikmin game for Wii U and couldn't get past the controls, although the gameplay and puzzle/management sim aspects were solid. The controls are better here, but it is definitely low-budget. The introductory scenes are still pictures where it should have been animation of a storm capsizing a boat and throwing everyone ashore. There is no story to follow either, only collect the pups for the werewolf or the limbs for the Frankenstein. There's no driving force story that I wanted to see the end of. You're just collecting your shipmates and returning them to the boat. At the start, you meet these Impas (imps), and without explanation or reason, you control them and they follow your every order to the death if you desire. You collect 4 different types of Impas, each corresponding to a different button on the directional pad, and finding secret chests by replaying levels allows you to command more than the initial 10 total. It's up to you to decide how many of each kind of Impas to command, and it's a guess as to how many diggers or fliers you'll need for the next section. There are enemies to defeat, and you'll lose a few Impas in the attack, but enemies drop orbs that, when returned to your base, will increase your pool of Impas by a few. You'll do a lot of backtracking to your base with the orbs and everything is on a time clock because your character is a vampire that can't be outside in the daylight, so time counting down is a constant threat. That's all fine. The gameplay is interesting enough, and I can get past the low budget to see a game worth my time shas been created here. What I can't get past is the COMPLETE LACK OF A MAP OR MINIMAP! There is no button you can press to see a map of the area, and there is no mini-map, so when the areas open up with 5 or 6 branching paths for you to take, it is up to you to remember which path is which, even though they all look the same with bland backgrounds and no distinctive features. After the first 5 hours or so, I spent too much time wandering around areas backtracking because I got lost to have any fun with it. A mini-map would have alleviated this and I could have finished this game with a rating of 8 or more. As is, I returned the rental and moved on to better games to spend my valuable time on. On the plus side, I got a few trophies rather easily. It seems to be a rather short game, as I got to world 2 of 4 in a short time. I'm a hardcore gamer, and I didn't feel it was worth my time. It would be great for fans of the movies, or people who aren't turned off by the lack of a mini-map. I feel my time is better spent with better games though. Expand

Graphics are okay and the game is fun.. However, it gets tedious once you realize you have to consistently go back and forth to an impa portalGraphics are okay and the game is fun.. However, it gets tedious once you realize you have to consistently go back and forth to an impa portal (aren't many of 'em!) just to cash in your imparite stones and treasure chests with a daylight timer ticking at the top of your screen telling you how much time you have left to spend before daylight comes.. The absence of in-game minimap makes this game even worse to a point that if you forgot where to go, you have to end the night early just to see the map before the game starts.. Early on, you may find it difficult to retain your impas but once you have found enough treasure chests, the game is a breeze.. It's easy to platinum, around 5-10hrs and that is all I care.. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: MONSTERS OVERBOARD! is a masterpiece of the worst of trashy games for kids, look: there is no special move, the impas have nothing and listen to me, the enemies or bosses and the trophies are boring and fast and a copy of the Pikmin saga. I don't like it, horrible game! Expand
