The VR Case Files, though technically well-adapted to the platform, is a novelty, a carnival rendition of a game I hold a huge amount of personal respect for. If nothing else, I thank L. A. Noire: The VR Case Files for reaffirming my love and respect for the original game.

Simply playing Detective, looking at clues, and driving through post-war L.A. are consistently thrilling and the VR enhancements make it seem even more authentic – even if those deserted streets feel weird.

An immersive and engrossing trip to the seedy underbelly of World War II era Los Angeles, the police procedural work enhanced enormously by being in virtual reality.

L.A. Noire: Case Files cleverly recycles one of the most intriguing games of the decade. Team Bondi’s meticulous meticulous world-building and technical achievements still live on, clicking seamlessly with VR, even if Case Files doesn’t exactly break new ground.

Despite some minor flaws, compared to the HTC Vive version, L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files is an enjoyable experience even on PlayStation VR

I am on 40+ titles and this one is easily one of the best overall. I love pretty much every rockstar game and I did play a good dozen hours of this on PS3 years back but got bored with it. In VR however, this game shines. Although it’s not the full game, it’s definitely not a spin off or “mobile” version of the game. You still get the full experience, or should I say added experience because this isn’t some spinoff or “mobile” experience. Its LA Noire in VR. Just half the content/missions. If you didn’t play the original, you’d think this is a masterpiece. And if you played the original and liked it, this is a must have for PSVR owners Expand

Noire VR case files is a very good showcase for what VR games can be and the closest You currently get to GTA on PSVR. Of course You see that it is a last gen game which was adapted for VR (graphics and sound (very good voice acting though)). But all together it is quite immersive, enjoyable, and presumably the best way to play L.A. Noire (if it was the full game).

It is not without its issues. Most issues can be "blamed" on the limitations of the move controllers e.g. when I was trying to shoot from behind cover the controllers often left the tracking area and controlling became a gamble. It also was not always obvious whether I was in cover or not. There are other VR games where the shooting mechanics felt more natural. During car chases the game claimed occasionally that I lost track of the car I should follow although it was still visible or I remembered where it turned. Sometimes the game was very picky about where exactly You grabbed or looked at. Also, the world could be more interactive e.g. characters could react more to actions. But then there are the limitations of the PS4.

In total it is fantastic. Though, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed after the "tutorial" cases and only changed my opinion afterwords. For me the biggest downsides are the loading times and that the story is ruined a bit by cutting the content to a subset of the original game.

I played on a base PS4 with locomotion and snap turning. Occasionally, I used teleportation since it was simpler (or the only possibility).
