Need For Speed Payback isn’t perfect – but it’s a nice step up from prior entries. Outside of Rivals, the series has really struggled over the past five or so years to really find its own way. The FMV-filled reboot wasn’t the right answer, and going for an action movie-styled variant is great for an ad campaign – but doesn’t make for a great campaign itself. Fortunately, the racing action and cop chases that litter the campaign make it worth playing. It looks great in motion, even if the action doesn’t hold up very well. The cop chases are exciting and the point-to-point races bring a level of arcade-style thrill that the series definitely benefits from.

Need for Speed Payback feels like the natural evolution of the series, and that’s a good thing considering the game ends with a great tease for a potential sequel. While I finished the story in around 15 hours, it’s worth noting that there are a ton of side events and collectibles that I failed to collect in that time. I could see myself easily doubling my time within Payback, and do so with a smile on my face the entire time.

Payback is a stark improvement over 2015’s entry in the series, adding likable characters, an enjoyable if not formulaic story, user-friendly tuning, and the best bits and pieces from the previous games rolled into one. Where Payback falters, however, is its misuse of compelling characters, lack of police force, and an open world which – while beautiful – only has about 1/8th of it in the city, leaving most of your driving to be an extended scenic route.

Need For Speed: Payback is far from the Burnout style crashes we were shown at E3, leaving the game with only a nice looking open world, and a truckload of flaws like the go-buy-lootcrates grinding system, an appalling storyline and heavily scripted races.

If you stick with it you'll find a decent racer here but getting past the inane narrative, broken progression systems and longing for racers past takes some doing.

Need For Speed Payback is several bad ideas on four wheels, a drab racer whose potential is rear-ended by an underhanded upgrade system and a story that belongs in a direct-to-DVD bargain bin.
  7. 30
The worst Need For Speed game of the modern era, that leaves no stone unturned in its attempts to make itself as boring, repetitive, and exploitative as possible.

But guys. . . Are you serious? I pay for game n I have to buy lootboxes? Seriously? Ok. You can say: you don't have to donate. But ... YOU MAKE GAMES BORING! YOU TRY MAKE US DONATE! YOU KILL GAMING!

You'd better produce a remakes of nfs undergroun, u2 n most wanted. Millions of people ask you about it every year after you make the next part of nfs... this is not nfs anymore... especially this year. It's justa moneymaking((((
P.S. I bought the game for ps4. I change my score from 0 to 7. As a whole it's a good game. But... theres a problem with graphics. Texrures load too slow))) I hope u will fix it soon. If so, I'll change score to higher point. And... it will be 10/10 if you'll throw off the cards from game. Get back tuning/styling system from nfs 2015. It was ok.

P.P.S. Thank you for patch 1.04! The game became almost ideal. My score now 9.0. I cant give 10/10 because of speed cards. But now... after two days of playing i want to give it. Thanks for such a cool game!

I love the graphics , the frostbite 3 engine is gorgeous , physics aren't perfect ,but not trash like NFS Rivals, i love the off-road races and i love the handling of the cars. What i hate ,and don't want derstand way is removed ,arethe freeroom cops. ther are cops but onli in chase race, this is retarded and stupid. overall i give an 8 ,is a fun game that deserves more attention and respect . I must admit, NFS 2015 was a OK game. It has it's flaws but it had soul in it. This game has NONE of that magic. Combined with the crazy card/lootbox system, this is the race failgame of the year for me. Expand

Nfs has been a franchise i loved since hot pursuit 3 on the ps1. Where should I start? Good things? They have the Foxbody. Now that we moved to the positives lets talk about everything wrong with the game. Car physics is easier to manuever and is no longer as realistic responsive as nfs 2015. Now anyone can drift without holding a drift by steering left and right to hold and balance a drift. Payback went a step back by making the game use the same car physics as Rivals. Anyone can master drift in this game without learning making this game too easy to master. The story is awful. Racing games DO NOT need a story. The story to this is cheap and lazy. It has nothing to do with racing. The racing is just in the background and isnt even the main focus of the game. Nfs 2015 big focus was racing and racing only. Silly live action cut scenes but at least I felt like a street racer and drifting those hairpins is satisfying because you have to master drifting. The characters in the game are nobodys and uninteresting. The games plot and characters are boring making it useless to have a story. Most racing games have bad music (Ridge racer is beast for racing music). But at least I was able to use my flashdrive with my music playing. the game has a level card slot machine system. Uninspiring AND A SLAP ON THE FACE FOR PROFESSIONAL REVIEWERS TO GIVE THIS GAME A HIGH SCORE. You can buy garages but i feel that pointless too since it doesnt matter how many you own. Map is big with mostly desert so the racing is pretty boring. This is what happens when EA listens to people who pretend to like racing games. This game feels like it was made for someone who claims they like racing but have never played a racing game. The game is a easy grind. You can make a million quick. Even before the story ends. That is how easy the game is. Online multiplayer, its a mess. We have posers using exotic cheating cars in races 98% of the time. The game online isnt balanced. Thats what EA gets for trying to have players race with a tuner and a exotic car that is OP. No one took this game serious at release. If anything this may be the worst nfs game to date. If you played need for speed the run then you played payback. Its essentially the same crap you get. There is no way Need for speed 2015 is worse than this. I still play it and the online community seemed to have moved back. Most people do not understand the concept of racing games. Grid had a good concept, Gran Turismo, Driveclub (the best ps4 racing game out there next to wipeout and burnout paradise remastered) i hope EA makes a new Shift game insted. That side of the franchise was amazing and everyone ignored it because it wasnt a underground street racing game. I called it quits with EA after this and ended up selling this game. Not worth to have as a collection neither. Expand
