NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139… is a pitch perfect update to one of the greatest stories ever told in the medium. Combat feels fast and fluid, much like players’ tears once they finish the game. The new content feels natural, magic is more useful than ever, and the reprised music and voice over bring the world to life.
  2. May 5, 2021
NieR Replicant 1.22 is an outstanding remake and an excellent action RPG in its own right. Combat is fast paced, focused, and well varied between three distinct weapon types and eight magic spells. Dungeons appear simple but their design is deceptively clever, and they carry a Legend of Zelda-esque charm to them. The visuals are greatly improved from the original, from character models to background details. Bosses are downright bombastic, masterfully juggling tense battles with visceral set pieces. The story is simply beautiful, making brilliant use of music to amplify already deeply emotional storytelling. Above all else, Replicant plays into concepts only possible in a video game - leading to a genuinely unforgettable experience. If you only play one game this year, make it NieR Replicant 1.22.

When I wrapped up my experience with Nier Replicant, I realized it was the most satisfied I’d ever felt after working so hard for a particular ending. Yoko Taro asking me to relive the same experiences again and again wasn’t a repetitive journey, but a more meaningful reflection on a cycle of hate, pain, and trauma. Nier Replicant is Yoko Taro’s best work, brought up to modern standards, and finally delivered in the presentation its tale always deserved.
  4. Apr 22, 2021
In truth, I'll never be able to explain the sheer level of brilliance within Nier Replicant, partly because of spoilers. What we have here is a story that will last the ages, contained within a game full of remarkable characters, beautiful-yet-haunting environments, satisfying gameplay and music that will be forever recorded in your heart. Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is perfect.
  5. Apr 22, 2021
Nier: Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is a beautiful experience and exactly how you should play this amazing game. Upon finishing, it's easy to say that it is unequivocally one of the best games I have ever played. This story emotionally moves players with the help of its character-writing, intense action, and somber tone, making it easy to immerse yourself in their world.
  6. Apr 22, 2021
The original NieR was a masterpiece, even if a middling critical reception and commercial struggles meant too few people got to enjoy and appreciate it. With NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, it finally gets a second chance at the acclaim it deserves, at a time when the world's much more receptive to Yoko Taro's particular style, and with all the improvements that this version upgrade brings. NieR Automata will always have a special place in my heart as the game that introduced me to NieR, but Replicant—with its narrower focus, with its raw energy, with its humanity, with Kainé—might just have taken the crown.
  7. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant is a great renovation of the cult classic. The revamped combat system is more user friendly, but even so it is the story, played out by a great cast of characters that carry everything. There is nothing quite like Nier Replicant.
  8. 100
NieR is a remarkable piece of art, and this remaster touches up the issues people had with the original without compromising what made it such an impactful work. It’s going to be interesting to see if people give it the look that it deserves this time around, because this really is the greatest game of all time, and has always deserved more than “cult” status."
  9. Apr 22, 2021
An improvement in every sense, NieR Replicant is an absolute blast. You’ll love the characters, the world and every little detail you can think of. Prepare yourself for another one of Yoko Taro’s wonderful, yet emotional, rollercoaster rides.
  10. Jul 6, 2021
If anything, the amazing story of the original Nier has only become more valuable today than it already was back in the day. While many elements have received a significant update, some remain the same, but the story more than makes up for it.
  11. May 19, 2021
Nier Replicant tells a deep, nostalgic story that can only happen within the confines of video games, as parts of the story needs to be felt by actually experiencing the gameplay, and eventually leaves its audience with lots of moral dilemma.
  12. Apr 27, 2021
Blemishes aside, it’s hard to see NieR Replicant ver. 1.22 as anything other than a masterpiece. Beautiful and tragic in equal measures, it’s a feast for the senses, a true epic, and an utterly unforgettable experience.
  13. Apr 26, 2021
An abundance of patience is required for Nier, and many will understandably be uninterested in making that commitment. But if you do, know that you are in for a genuine classic. It is a wild game that seems thrilled at the very notion of being provocative. It isn't shallow shock value, but rather something that tries to reach out, grab you, and give you an experience you can't easily get in many other places. Replicant is a second chance for the original Nier, and one it unquestionably deserves.
  14. Nier Replicant is a must-play for anyone who loved “Automata,” a game some praise as one of the finest ever created.
  15. Apr 22, 2021
And now it is time for NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, which corrects almost all the flaws of the original release. You can still easily see glimpses of old NieR here - it's almost the same exact game. And that's great, because even after all those years there's still nothing like it. rn
  16. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139… is the perfect opportunity to experiment NieR Automata's prequel. An epic game with plenty of improvements.
  17. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant ver. 1.22 is an excellent spin on the traditional hero’s journey and will give Nier Automata fans a new appreciation for that title. It’s a lovingly crafted rerelease and will delight both new and old players alike.
  18. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is what that the original should have been from the start. A more polished and expanded game with an improved combat system while keeping the stunning aspects of the old NieR. If I were to rate this game only from a die-hard fan's perspective, I would give it an even higher score.
  19. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 is a gorgeous game with a compelling plot and a stunning soundtrack. If you're a fan of the original game, you'll probably want to see what this version has to offer, and if you've never experienced the game in any form, this is an opportunity to play the game as it was first intended.
  20. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 is a more approachable version of an emotional and thought-provoking RPG. This is a game people might not have known what to do with years ago. Now, following the success of NieR: Automata, it’s presented with additional accessibility options, better looking and smoother gameplay, and additional content that gently builds on what was already there.
  21. Apr 22, 2021
It's a testament to how special NieR is for it to have endured solely in the hearts and minds of its most dedicated fans for a decade, only to explode into a phenomenon that has kept the video game community talking and debating over it long after the credits have rolled. The rough edges of the original release are still present in NieR Replicant, but it's clear that this game and the series as a whole will no longer just be another faded memory.
  22. Apr 22, 2021
If you played NieR, you'll find the game elevated to a new height. If you never played NieR, it's time for you to experience this title every gamer should try.
  23. 90
The NieR franchise has easily become one of my favorites. After NieR Automata, my need to replay the original NieR grew and grew, and thankfully, Square Enix has answered my prayers for an updated version of the original title. NieR: Replicant tells a fantastic story that's carried by great writing and a soundtrack that stops you in your tracks to listen to its incredible melody. The only thing that holds Replicant back from true greatness is its old-school take on fetch quests and the horribly constant backtracking.
  24. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is something worth playing in 2021 and beyond, and a one-of-a-kind JRPG that continues to challenge convention even a decade after it first began to do so.
  25. Apr 22, 2021
Toylogic has done a stellar job in modernizing 2010's release of NieR with NieR: Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139 giving fans of both the original and Automata something new to enjoy in the ever-expanding world of NieR.
  26. Apr 22, 2021
A generic, sub-par action RPG that is neither generic, sub-par or even an action RPG. NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is a unique game that constantly plays with our expectations, deconstructing a genre while constructing a subversive narrative. It may not be perfect, but it's still a must have.
  27. Apr 29, 2021
Nier Replicant recovers a cult adventure with which to explore the Nier universe in depth, improving the weakest points of the original title to make it much more fluid and fun. Its soundtrack is memorable.
  28. Apr 22, 2021
The unique adventure with great characters, an emotional story and a brilliant soundtrack was extensively modernized and improved meaningfully, making this a great modern take on an overlooked classic.
  29. May 5, 2021
Nier Replicant gets a new lease on life complete with a combat system and graphical overhaul resulting in a game that’s actually fun to play. More importantly, it allows the emotional and amazing story-telling to shine even more. Backtracking complaints aside, this is one game you have to experience for yourself.
  30. Apr 24, 2021
Nier Replicant is a must-play for fans because it is the best version of the original Nier to date. A very personal and, above all, emotional and unique game. A journey full of feelings in which nothing is what it seems and never ceases to amaze us with each new ending.
  31. 85
NieR Replicant is a game I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Its story is fantastically dark, incredibly unique and told in such a fascinating way, while its mix of combat and exploration has just the right hints of Zelda that make it a hell of a lot of fun to play through. It has some repetition issues and shows its true age in some areas, but it’s a game I’d recommend to the first-time NieR players like myself as well as the Automata die-hards. I guess it’s time for me to finish that game after all.
  32. Apr 22, 2021
Ver. 1.22474487139 accentuates NieR's virtues and adds new ones, making it not only the definitive edition of a cult classic, but also a great game on its own.
  33. Apr 22, 2021
    Quotation forthcoming.
  34. Apr 22, 2021
Square Enix overhauls one of the most unique and special games ever made, and gives us another chance to discover this not-so-hidden gem.
  35. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant Ver.1.22474487139... is the best way to play a genuinely amazing game. The flaws of the original version have been smoothed out some more, and while it still struggles with tedium and grind, the bright spots stand out. Even if you're not traditionally into JRPGs, I can recommend Nier because its unique story and tremendous voicework make it stand out as an extremely well-told tale. Be prepared to curse the designer who decided that one of the most common items you need to upgrade weapons has what feels like a 1% drop rate.
  36. Apr 22, 2021
Regardless of my feelings on the final changes, or at my annoyances at the reptetitions, few games touch my soul as deeply as this series does. NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… is still an experience that will always stick with me, whether I think my hard work has been rewarded or not. The original 2010 release came with many caveats, and Replicant has softened many while bringing some of its own, but this is a game that makes me think and feel more than most others. It’s tedious, mindless, and even frustrating at times, but this rerelease makes a peculiar, melancholy and beautiful game much easier to recommend.
  37. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver.1.22 remains a unique experience and it is nice to find familiar faces under the aegis of a successful graphic facelift.
  38. Apr 22, 2021
You will remember NieR Replicant in 20 years, probably more than other games that have the perfect rating. An unforgettable adventure with which you will laugh, cry and your heart will break.
  39. Apr 22, 2021
It's probably not going to win over haters of the original, but for returning fans or those who jumped in at Automata this is a fantastic update to a cult classic game that also happens to bring with it some very exciting new surprises.
  40. 85
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is a fantastic celebration of a game that, even after a decade, feels unmatched in how it tells its incredibly unique story. The visual overhaul is excellent, and the combat better than ever. However, some archaic quest design acts as a deft reminder that this is a game from ten years ago. Without a doubt, though, this is the best way to experience NieR where it all began.
  41. Apr 22, 2021
Whatever power that be helped Yoko Taro become world famous, to the point where he can keep making these weird masterpieces, in any format: thank you.
  42. Apr 22, 2021
As one of the most underrated games from its generation, NieR can now find a new audience who are sure to appreciate its jaw-dropping story, pitch-perfect tone, and super-rewarding boss fights.
  43. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... restores lost content alongside a brand new ending but requires players to retread the same 60+ hour grind to experience what's unique to this oddly numbered JRPG.
  44. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… is the perfect way for fans of Automata to experience the original and for newcomers to engage with the franchise. With updated combat and visuals, Replicant can proudly sit amongst greats in the genre; however, the hypersexualized representation of Kainé remains and deters from an incredible experience.
  45. Apr 22, 2021
An excellent return of a classic, Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 is a perfect opportunity for both newcomers and old players to (re)discover an action-RPG that was too badly criticized at the time.
  46. Apr 22, 2021
Despite some dated shortcomings, this “version upgrade” is more than the sum of its parts. Novel design choices like camera and genre shifts are as impressive today as they were more than 10 years ago. Main characters are dynamic with their own interesting backstories, and the plot is as deliciously devastating as you’d expect. Nier Replicant might not convert players that were turned off by the original or Automata, but there are more than enough quality-of-life updates and story-centric nuances to keep longtime fans and new initiates coming back for subsequent playthroughs.
  47. Apr 23, 2021
In a way, Nier Automata is both a blessing and a condemnation for Replicant. Automata's success allowed it to finally arrive in America with a good facelift. However, you will also find here many concepts that were improved in Automata and now feel more rustic, limiting the impression you can have of a game that was actually released before. If you put the comparisons and imperfect edges aside, you will ultimately find in Nier Replicant ver. 1.22 a story worth playing and an instant cult classic.
  48. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant modernizes a rather controversial work just enough, and improves it to the right point. Emotionally destabilizing on the narrative front, Yoko Taro's action RPG, reinterpreted on a playful level by the Toylogic team, keeps its essence unaltered, halfway between genius and madness, without the balance being always positioned in the middle between the two. extremes.
  49. Apr 22, 2021
Gripping action drama with sword, magic and depth, that suffers from an empty game world, backtracking and boring sidequests.
  50. Apr 22, 2021
Nier has never been a perfect game, and with a bolder attitude this could have been the perfect way to rediscover this hidden gem of the Playstation 3 era. The work done here is still pretty good, and a great way to show why Nier has become kind of a cult classic.
  51. LEVEL (Czech Republic)
    Feb 15, 2022
Nier: Replicant is a game for true fans of action JRPGs. For those who have the patience to overcome the slow start and generic environments. And who are willing to play the game several times to fully understand what it was about. They will definitely be rewarded.
  52. CD-Action
    Nov 19, 2021
As a remake, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is a bit disappointing, because in terms of graphics it only reached the level of NieR Automata, which means it doesn’t look great. The content, however, is still brilliant. It’s an amazing adventure you must experience. [06/2021, p.36]
  53. Jun 7, 2021
This handful of nitpicks notwithstanding, NieR Replicant is a resounding success and a great opportunity to experience a remastered version of this hidden gem. It is absolutely a product of its time, as well as one of the more notorious design minds active in the industry, and it carries these marks on its sleeve, from forced repetition necessary to unlock its multiple endings, to action gameplay that doesn’t shy away from incorporating the occasional side-scrolling platforming or even visual novel section. Of course, new content is always a plus for returning players, but ultimately a hauntingly beautiful score and tons of amazing voice work that brings the unique characters to life for an unforgettable adventure are the true stars of the show, and make sure that no one, first-time players included, walks away as anything less than well satisfied.
  54. Jun 3, 2021
Despite my complaints, it’s clear that the remake is most definitely the best way to experience what Nier has to offer. The improved visuals, performance and additional content are all much appreciated, and while it’s still a title with notable flaws, it’s infinitely easier to recommend to all who are willing to put in the time and effort to embark on a journey they’ll not soon forget.
  55. May 26, 2021
You can tell this is an old game at its heart but if you want to know what came before the phenomenal Automata, you should play Replicant anyway. It’s still a very good game with a great story.
  56. May 19, 2021
The best way to play a cult classic and experience the wonderful storytelling abilities of Yoko Taro. Nier Replicant is a worthy version upgrade to accompany 2017's successful Nier Automata.
  57. 80
Nier Replicant is a chameleon, as its slow start serves as a siren song that leads to explosive emotional crescendos and satisfying narrative payoffs.
  58. PLAY
    May 4, 2021
The rough edges have been sanded down. This JRPG attracted a cult following, and thanks to Toylogic’s upgrade it’s now easy to see why for yourself. [Issue#1, p.84]
  59. May 2, 2021
The shotgun blast of gameplay types and tonal shifts isn’t quite as varied or seamlessly integrated as it is in Nier Automata, but it’s still impressive just how far ahead of the curve the original game actually was.
  60. Apr 27, 2021
I loved the original. I love this remake. And if you’ve never played the original or you did, you owe it to yourself to give this one a check. It’s a game that was always good made that much better, and it’s going to stick with you a long time after the credits roll on the final ending.
  61. Apr 23, 2021
Nier Replicant 1.22474487139… gives the cult game a second chance. Technical improvements make the experience much better than the original without changing its essence, and new content nurtures Yoko Taro universe, although it didn't age well.
  62. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant is a nice remaster, a fine game and a masterfully crafted story. Enough perseverance rewards you with an experience only a few games can match.
  63. Apr 22, 2021
Addressed to both new players and longtime fans, NieR Replicant succeeds in transcending the NieR experience, thanks to its enhanced (yet imperfect) visuals, its full re-recorded soundtrack and voice-acting and its new gameplay mechanics to make it feel more like NieR Automata. For sure, the addition of new scenes, such as the Mermaid episode and an all-new ending, represent a powerful argument to those who are already familiar with the original game.
  64. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant overall is a successful remaster, with a bit of spit and polish improving many facets of the original game, but with some of the negatives unfortunately carrying over as well. The end result is an action RPG that will keep most players entertained for many hours, as the story, combat, and characters outweigh the boredom of Replicant’s sometimes repetitive gameplay.
  65. Apr 22, 2021
Nier presented as an action role-playing game. Nier was actually a controlled demolition of genre conventions driven by a taste for subversion and a desire to explore emotional boundaries between mild sorrow and hysterical despair. Replicant ver. 1.22474487139… keeps Nier intact with distinct improvements to its operation and accessibility. It remains an eccentric, effective, and occasionally inhospitable member of its medium.
  66. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant was always an odd title that was great both in spite of and because of its limitations. Many of those oddities remain in Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139..., but it's a more refined experience on the whole that doesn't feel quite so awkward when placed alongside the superb NieR Automata. Now, if only they could get around to remaking the Drakengard series.
  67. Apr 22, 2021
While the backtracking remains, it feels much less painful this time around thanks to it being part of a game with smooth performance that’s ultimately much more fun to actually play. The game is considerably improved as a result, and much of what made the original quietly special can now shine far more brightly. It might not be perfect, but within this slightly flawed framework beats the heart of an absolute masterpiece. Those who fell in love with Nier through Automata should go into this with a clear expectation that this is not that game – but if they do, they’ll find much to love.
  68. Apr 22, 2021
I'm not going to lie, Nier Replicant made me ugly-cry on several occasions. Kainé, Emil, and Weiss will win your heart with their earnest and endearing personalities, making their tragic journey with you and tremendous story moments hit hard. Despite some significant gameplay enhancements, the lengths you have to go to see the story all the way through will be a test of your willpower. But for all its antiquated designs retained from the original version, it's worth the effort in the end. Thus, Nier Replicant is essential for anyone who has love for Automata, and it's a special experience on its own.
  69. Apr 22, 2021
Improved visuals and smoothed out combat go a long way in Nier's update, but it's the story that's the star of the show.
  70. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant is at once an improvement over the original while still retaining its dated design frustrations that’s not quite at the bar of modern remasters. Yet for all its flaws, the story, bolstered by its grand otherworldly score, has the same deep emotional depths that first won over new fans, and if nothing else, you won’t find a more mismatched bunch of outcasts worth caring about.
  71. Apr 22, 2021
After a decade, this once known as a niche title gets another chance to show the world what an intriguing game it was.
  72. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant hits home thanks to some amazing combat and an intriguing story that keeps you entertained throughout. Although the story does drag a little sometimes there is a lot to love, especially thanks to the different endings.
  73. Apr 22, 2021
New cutscenes build on the lore and character development, the wonderful soundtrack is improved and the areas that warranted the most criticism such as game mechanics and graphics no longer do so. The story takes surprising twists and hits the emotional depth making this is a truly memorable experience.
  74. Apr 22, 2021
A highly polished remaster of the almost-classic action role-player, that is still stuck with some of the original flaws but allows the thoughtful, and very humorous, script to shine.
  75. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant remakes an under-appreciated action RPG for a new era of consoles and players, giving us another look into the beautifully bizarre mind of creator Yoko Taro. Replicant isn’t the most impressive remake on a technical or visual level, but it’s received some very welcome upgrades, such as an improved combat system. More importantly, the thing that didn’t need fixing wasn’t broken: the original’s captivating storyline and cast of characters. Everything in that regard is still here as it should be, just told through the eyes of the initially intended protagonist, and with a few pieces of originally cut content restored.
  76. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver.1.22 embodies human nature: imperfect, stand-offish, sometimes even contradictory ... yet, it’s unique in its own way and, why not, unforgettable for better or worse.
  77. Apr 22, 2021
Story, setting and main characters are still engaging. The fighting system is faster and more handy than in the original. And there are also some new quests and enemies that insert seamlessly into the game. Concurrently the weak points basically remain the same including too much there and back together with much better, but still behind the times, graphics. But overall, there are more good reasons to (re-)visit NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... than against.
  78. Apr 22, 2021
While not perfect, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… manages to address the biggest flaw from the original game, which is its gameplay. After being fine-tuned and modeled after NieR: Automata’s combat, NieR Replicant feels absolutely fantastic to play. Fans of the original will also appreciate the new perspective that the teenage protagonist brings to the table. This game is the perfect entry point for newcomers and the definitive way for veterans to relive a truly iconic game.
  79. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant is so damn fun to play. Combat is ultimately its best feature, but some of the ideas are implemented superbly, whether in the story or the mechanics.
  80. 80
Gamers weren't quite ready for Yoko Taro's NieR back in 2010, but now the now cult classic is getting another chance in the way it was originally intended. On top of additional content and bonuses not found in the original, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... features a beautifully melancholy narrative that is equal parts gut-wrenching and heartfelt, all of which is very worth experiencing.
  81. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139 is not a remake but neither is it a simple remaster. It's an enhanced version that fixes some of the original game’s issues and delivers a bunch of new content, but does nothing to refresh its dated approach to world and quest design.
  82. Apr 22, 2021
NieR Replicant ver.1.2247444487139... is an update of the cult hit that, despite what it may seem at first glance, represents an excellent way to approach the classic. An update that focuses on combat and technical aspects while keeping the structure and essence of the original intact. As chaotic as it is brilliant.
  83. Apr 22, 2021
Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139... doesn't fix the original game's flaws but, from a technical stand point, serves finally justice to an underestimated and obscure cult
  84. Apr 22, 2021
Despite being a great game and a worthwhile remake, NieR Replicant ver.1.22 is not for everyone. Some of the dated design elements are frustrating and needlessly time consuming. The story, while incredible, is locked away behind multiple playthroughs and endings, with its true value being entirely subjective depending on how much time you're willing to invest. However, none of this is news to fans of NieR: Automata. Put simply, if you've been waiting for a deeper, darker dive into the world of NieR, ver.1.22 will not disappoint.
  85. May 29, 2021
On offer is an absolutely wonderful amount of world, lore and story to digest and fully absorb yourself in. It’s undoubtedly a magical game also, though it’s hard to picture this venture breaking the original out of its niche. NieR is a wonderful, intriguing franchise that a select number are dearly devoted to, and rightly so. The game’s not entirely for me, especially considering all the backtracking, but it’s a weird and wonderful ride nevertheless.
  86. Apr 26, 2021
NieR Replicant remains a memorable and affecting action RPG. Elements of its PS3-era design really haven't aged well, but this remade remaster does a lot to enhance the experience. Incredibly tight and responsive gameplay, tied together with a touching tale of uniquely oddball characters, makes for an adventure that stands the test of time.

NieR Replicant’s upgrades put it nearly on par with NieR: Automata, and while it doesn’t live up to the tight package Automata provided, it’s a great addition for anyone who missed it the first time around.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… confirms that the original NieR was both way ahead of its time and far behind it. The story is tremendously captivating and it’s only gotten better with newly added content. On the other side of the coin, the repetitive gameplay feels outdated even by 2010 standards. Those who press through the 30-hour adventure will be rewarded with a bold narrative odyssey. It may even outdo NieR Automata in retrospect, but it’s hard to blame anyone who’d rather watch it all on YouTube instead of playing it for themselves.

Think of every obnoxious sidequest you’ve ever had to do; chances are, you’ll have to do exactly the same in Replicant. It has everything from mail delivery to mass-slaughtering sheep for an occasional drop of mutton. Its only saving grace is the new battle system, created by experts at Platinum Games.[Issue#253, p.52]

A decent game, but as memorable as its successor - 2017's brilliant NieR: Automata - NieR Replicant is not. The captivating story and the creative use of camera angles that allows different game genres to blend seamlessly show its potential, but the game cannot hide the fact that it is already more than a decade old.

Taro’s approach is of a restless rarity; he swaps genres as though trying to scratch an itch.

This isn't just my assertion, Nier: Automata was a clear effort to implement feedback from the first game and enhance Nier's strengths and eradicate its weaknesses, according to its developers. I consider Nier: Automata to be essential, as such I think if you're a mildly curious Automata fan, you'll come away from Nier disappointed. You have played the better Nier game already. This reiusse is meant for lore nerds, for hardcore fans, for completionists, oldschool Nier evangelists, basically everyone who's already decided to buy the game before reading this.

Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, with the handsome younger hero originally exclusive to Japan, looks, plays, and feels better overall, save the unfortunate inclusion of an achievement for players who peek at the underwear of an intersex supporting character. [Impressions]

If you’re a fan of the series, and you can respect the audacity of these decade-old ideas, Nier Replicant is the best appetizer yet for whatever main course Square Enix will inevitably serve in the future. But for newcomers or casual fans, the caveat stands: Nier Replicant is worth the time, but only if you have plenty of time to spend.

As somebody who wasn't into the Nier lore going into this review, I'm fully invested now. That's the magic that Nier Replicant works and, even with its faults, it's a treat for both fans and newcomers.

It may be clunky in places, and uncomfortable in others, but once you settle into its strange rhythm, there’s really nothing else like it — well, aside from Automata. But this is exactly what you should play if you’re craving more of Taro’s unique vision.

And this is ultimately the root of the problem with Nier 1.22 — it's forcing us into an era where the remake is the definitive text, the canonical copy of a game that existed for over a decade that formed connections with players and shows us an entirely different world of game making. The original text has murdered the exported release and the revision has come to strangle the original text because the best-selling sequel demanded it. What we're left with is two nearly identical Niers each vying to be the true Nier. One must imagine Yoko Taro happy when he watches quietly as one snuffs the other.

    Actual Honest Review

lol @ the people calling this a "masterpiece". Its an ok game especially if you were into Automata but its not the second coming of jesus like fanboys are making it out to be, its the same game as before just with a few changes to make combat more fluid plus some visual upgrades.

The voice acting is really bad and it doesnt help that the dialogue is your typical anime cringe fest of weird grunts and out of place emotion, do yourself a favor and change the setting to the japanese audio.

The graphics are sub par at best, everything has this dull washed out color filter and the areas are dull and lifeless. The enemy designs are pretty bland compared to Automata, the shades are just boring typical shadow enemies and the game never really gives you any variety in that area.

The gameplay is essentially the same thing from Automata except the only difference is that your robot is a book now. The side quests are still just boring fetch quests so the time in between the good parts are a slog at best, even the main quests leave a lot to be desired.

Ignore the fanboys on this one, its not even close to Automata in terms of quality or production value. The gameplay is mediocre at best and the only redeeming qualities are the soundtrack and story, wait until its on sale.
