Outriders has its flaws, but they’re compensated with gory firefights and enjoyable co-op. Another upside is that it doesn’t try to be an open world: the levels are tight and packed with action. [Issue#252, p.44]

At first glance Outriders might look like some other shooters such as Destiny or The Division, but its complicated and diverse combat help it stand alone and impress, and with some better support and polish can easily challenge other loot shooters in the market.

Outriders offers an alternative in the looter shooter genre that is very enjoyable if played in company, but without offering anything groundbreaking compared to other alternatives. Its connectivity failures ruin the gaming experience.

Is Outriders a sophisticated action game with a compelling sci-fi story? No. Does it feel fun to freeze a spider with an ice turret and shatter it with a well-placed sniper shot? You bet. Sometimes, that’s all one really wants from a shooter like this. It could use an offline mode for single-player sessions and a fair bit of maintenance, but it’s a solid foundation for an action game that respects its players’ time.

Outriders is worth the time investment so far, in spite of its clunkiness and server instability at launch. Although the game has areas it needs to improve, the core ideas and gameplay are incredibly strong, making it easy to overlook whatever flaws are present. It's also an easy game to recommend for both solo players and groups of friends looking for a shooter to dive into together, and because of the world tier mechanic, anyone with any level of skill can jump into Outriders and have a great time. With a handful of hours left to go in the main campaign, that doesn't appear likely to change - though this review will be updated and finalized once completed to reflect the whole of the experience either way.

The “old gen” versions of Outriders do not have to be ashamed of the comparison with their counterparts on next gen consoles. The weight of the years in terms of hardware is felt in the framerate, the loading times as well as the displayed resolutions, which encroaches a little on the comfort of play without being crippling, quite the contrary. The game from People Can Fly and Square Enix retains on PS4 and Xbox One all the qualities and faults of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions, starting with a hard-hitting combat system, an intoxicating rise to power of the avatar, a mysterious planet Enoch, but also general instability responsible for several crashes.

Outriders is the new looter shooter from People Can Fly and Square Enix. It takes you to the planet Enoch, where mankind has to fight to survive and earn its place among the wild animals and hostile factions. It's got some great ideas, but lacks an interesting story and more importantly, good loot.

The endgame is where this game does it better than anyone for day 1 launch. Expeditions add a unique aspect to leveling that will keep the game enjoyable and playing for hours. People are far to quick to judge a game because of a few server issues and give it a 0 without even finishing it and getting to the best part. Expand

I really did. So much so that I forced myself to play nearly twenty hours of this steaming pile of garbage. If I could get my money back I would. Conversely, if I could pay to erase this game from existence I would also do that. The difficulty spikes would be bad enough to ruin the game for me on their own, even if they weren't paired with floaty aiming, terrible and inconsistent cover mechanics, and weapons that felt like they were shooting pellets. Enemies pretty much all just rush, and you're constantly funneled into areas where you have one piece of cover you better cling to for dear life or you'll be annihilated. The areas seem like they could offer dynamic and engaging combat, but the fact that this game isn't truly open world means you can't ever really engage enemies on your terms or with a strategy you've decided. If you are brave enough to stay mobile and aggressive (as the game SUGGESTS) you get punished with waves of enemies popping in behind and all around you. I can't give an honest critique of the story because it was so forgettable I didn't know what I was doing half the time I was playing. The russian guy was cool I guess. Bottom line: 3/10. If you want a good tps, go play the Division. Expand

If it's on Game Pass - that's worth a try. I bought this game for PS4 and I actually regret it. $80 CAD... not worth it.

I will say I bought this game after trying the demo and most liking it and then seeing review after review heap praise on this game. Those reviews were misleading to say the least.

    Pros:

    - Loot system is decent
    - Crafting and upgrading work very well (although it's really expensive)
    - The class abilities are actually fun
    - Re-spec you're character any time any way you want is great.

    Cons:

    - This game is too hard above WT 3 or so. The healing system is bugged because my Trickster standing 3 feet from an enemy is NOT healing. Which breaks the game, because you have to put yourself in mortal peril to go heal... just to have to it bug out and you die... a lot.
    - As good as modding is ... I don't want to spend 10 minutes between short missions just to mod my gear so it's good enough to not die.
    - Too many load screens. It's ridiculous that 20 years ago Jak and Daxter did a whole adventure game with almost 0 loading. It's one world. This game has load screens all the f**king time. It takes 5-10 minutes to go anywhere.
    - Every single fight is the same - enemies are insanely accurate all the way across the map. If you're 3 of 4 classes, you have to charge through bullets all the time and hope you don't die.
    - Every single side quest is the same.
    - The map is almost impossible to use in-game. You have to pause, memorize the contours of the zone you're in and then skirt the walls to find where you're going.

    The deal breakers:

    - The healing system is stupid or bugged and it makes it so easy to get one-shot by big enemies. I cannot think of a better example than a boss, like Yagak. He can run up to you, jump on you twice and kill you even on WT 1. You cannot stagger him, and you cannot kill him fast. So you're literally running away from him while your abilities recharge, hoping you don't die.
    - I didn't care about any legendary drop I got. Every single one dropped like 3000 damage points or like 1000 armor points below my level. Why? So I can waste time/resources upgrading them. They aren't even that good. I ended up with an all Purple (epic?) build.
    - Bosses are insanely hard because of the healing system. I had to do all of them on World Tier 1, because I really did not have the patience to avoid an AOE attack that hits the whole room you're in. So, you just stand there and wail on the boss and hope for the best. Terrible.
    - The story is a solid 2/10. The Setting/Plot/Premise is really good but it drags way too long. Like Destiny, it doesn't really have a story... it has lore. It events happen as a way to make you go from one place to another.
    - Lastly, single player, which is how I am doing this game with no revives is by far the dumbest design choice I have ever seen. Why can you self-revive in multiplayer but not single-player?

I almost rage quit this game dozens of times, but my inner completionist wanted to finish the campaign so I could say I at least got $80 CAD of fun.

    In closing:

If you really like looter-shooters, pick it up on Game Pass or wait until it goes on sale. I would NOT recommend buying this game.

The praise I have heard for the last 6 weeks is undeserved. Here's why it's so highly praised: because the loot and end-game systems weren't broken at launch. That's it. If every other looter shooter hadn't been so terrible at launch, I think this game would have gotten the 3-5/10 it deserves instead of the 8-10/10 ratings everyone seems to be pumping.

Playing this game made me want to go back to Anthem, to dust off Diablo III or log back in to Destiny 2. Because all of those are way more fun to play than this game.

The gameplay may be fun, but you never get to play it properly. The server stability is a catastrophe. It has to be online but you are constantly thrown out if you ever get into the game. Co-op gameplay doesn't work properly, cross-play is also bugged. This game is almost unplayable at the moment. The next anthem? Maybe. The next cyberpunk? It has certain similarities to the release. If what your money means to you, wait until it is greatly reduced and maybe it will work by then. Expand
