Is Persona 5 Royal enough to justify purchasing a game fans have already played? Yes. The amount of change brought to the title is significant, and it all feels like a marked improvement. For a game that was already one of the best JRPGs in recent years, Persona 5 Royal is a follow-up that cements itself as an experience well-worth repeating in lieu of a proper Persona sequel.

Persona 5 was already a strong front-runner for being the best JRPG ever made, and Royal really gets me wondering what else could even compete. The excellent story and its lovable, multidimensional characters along with the challenging, tactical combat are all refined and back for another round with new surprises and new friends in tow. There are new areas to explore and new twists to leave your jaw on the floor. Very little has been left untouched, and just about everything that has been touched is better off for it. The Phantom Thieves have stolen my heart all over again, and I don’t really want it back.

Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

The best version of a masterpiece is... a masterpiece once again. It is also a joy to play in 4K.

Beautifully enhanced and at its core still tremendously fascinating mixture of daily high school routine and bizarre mystery thriller.

The stellar pace and production of Persona 5 did not require adjustments and additions to its one hundred hour run time. And yet here is Persona 5 Royal, presenting that package with integral new characters as it remodels the structure, combat, and whimsical ephemera that binds them all together. Persona 5 Royal is the most articulate and realized expression of Persona’s ethos, provided one has the time (and patience) to see it through.

It was just another quintessential Persona experience: a wildly, wonderfully fun story-driven game with a story that fails to live up to its own potential and fundamentally misunderstands the core of their own characters. Atlus both made the most of and absolutely squandered the chance to improve upon Persona 5—and honestly? I don’t know what I was expecting.

We already knew that persona 5 royal was going to be a much better experience but Atlus literally blew it away by improving on a masterpiece game and turning it into perfection! They literally took and redesigned everything and added much much more. If persona 5 royal itself was released in 2017 it would have easily won GOTY. It is such a perfect game made with love and care and is right now the highest rated ps4 exclusive of all time. Sega and atlus has given us a game that will go down in history as one of the greatest and best crafted pieces in the medium I can't recommend playing this game enough! Another HUGE masterpiece added to the list of Sony exclusives. I wish we get the original persona 5 on steam though that would be really cool having persona on pc and ps the best platforms out there! I honestly think it's one of the best games ever made, not even just in the JRPG category. Coming from someone who's only turn-based experience before base Persona 5 was Pokemon, I wasn't sure how I'd like it. After seeing how incredible this game was, it definitely became my favorite game of all time. And Royal only expands on everything in base P5. I think it's much more than enough to warrant $60 USD and every change, whether big or small, just brings so much joy to everyone playing it. It's a game that you can't miss, and the third semester only sweetens the deal. Expand

Persona 5 Royal is one of, if not the, best JRPGs ever made. Having platinumed the original Persona 5 two years ago, I went into persona 5Persona 5 Royal is one of, if not the, best JRPGs ever made. Having platinumed the original Persona 5 two years ago, I went into persona 5 royal hoping for slight changes to gameplay that would essentially make it a better replaythrough. There are so many minor changes throughout the game that make the characters feel more alive, or fix even the smallest issues that I had with the base game, such as completely overhauling the mementos mega dungeon, that made me thoroughly enjoy replaying through the game. If that was all there was to the game, I would agree with many of the people on this website leaving disgruntled reviews that this game is not worth $60 to someone who has played the base game. I think there is some validity in that the game maybe should cost less to those who payed for the base game and that areas like Okumura's palace were not truly fixed; however, the third semester content utterly shocked me in how well both the characters and situations were written. Without going into any spoilers, Persona has managed has managed to make me completely rethink my concepts of Justice and the idea of moving towards the future. Thematically, royal just works. I personally thought the original ending felt lackluster and the characters' behaviors didn't really make logical sense after all they had been through together, but with the changes made in royal, I believe the ending is actually the BEST portion of the entire game now. Finally, I want to end my review by talking about the music. Persona 5 already had an insanely beautiful soundtrack, potentially the best of 2017, had Nier;Automata not also come out that same year. Somehow, they made that soundtrack even better with absolute bangers like "I Believe" in combination with the more emotional "僕らの光." I don't think that this game is for everyone, but I Believe the level of care and quality present in this game is so rare and worth paying attention to that it should shine as the Pinnacle of both modern JRPG gameplay and storytelling. It is not a game to be ignored. Expand

While the work done in the original resulted in a good game, Atlus have been extremely predatory with how they are handling the game. RoyalWhile the work done in the original resulted in a good game, Atlus have been extremely predatory with how they are handling the game. Royal should have been an expansion but they are forcing players to buy the thing at full proce again just for some extra content and QoLs. Feels like the early adopters, the people who support the franchise the most have been betrayed, and it is something Atlus should never do again. Expand
