I stopped playing PES 2 years ago, I had this one on day one. So far I am quite impressed. Although some mechanisms need to be tuned, overall this game is a beast.

Needless to say, several of the negative reviews seen on this game are clearly made by FIFA players who never tried out this game. To them I say: The only thing you can gain at a personal level from here is by buying the game

Followed by ISS 64. and then PES2/3/4, Konami really did have a special place in every one of our game collections.

PES 5 and 6 were fantastic and I spent thousands of hours playing Master League. Every goal and every play was a joy, I became fan of players from having them on my squads, ie Shevchenko, Nedved.

And then came the PS3, and it has been downhill ever since. Something we never thought Konami could do. They had been fantastic for so long.

And now comes the PS4, and a promise of old days. The FOX engine, a new King.

After a few months of PES 2015, I can now evaluate how it stacks up agains FIFA and previous PES.
    Is the King really back?

I am very sad to say that it definitely is not. Konami is lost. The magic is not there.

The truth is, PES 2015 gives a good initial impression (coming from the abyssmal PES 2014 this was not very hard). There was definite progress in some areas, but in the end this PES is not up to par in several areas, and I find myself going back to PES 2013.

The FOX engine seems like a failure. Graphical enhancements are the least of worries for PES.
    Konami fails once again.

    Positives:

    - Improved animations. This makes the game more current gen.
    - Faster first touch compared to PES 2014.
    - Better entry into PS4 than Konami had into PS3.

    Negatives:

    - Tactics are very general, a huge stepback after PES 2013.
    - In general the game is still not as responsive as PES 2013. The pitch is not yours quite yet.
    - AI is quite poor and defending turns into trying to cover the holes that the AI keeps opening in your defense.
    - The PES feel is not quite there. Does not feel anywhere as sensitive or manual as the PS2 games. Thus, the satisfaction from buildup and scoring is not comparable.
    - ONLINE matches are HORRIBLE. This should have brought my score down to a 5 really. Terrible lag, worst online experience ever. PES 2013 on Steam is miles better.
    - Although animations are improved, they get in the way of the gameplay. Konami really needs to evaluate where this game is going. I don't really see a path, I would start from scratch.
    - Commentary is horrible, in any language. It's better to turn it off.

In the end, PES 2015 feels, after months of playing, like a fixed PES 2014. But nothing special. Definitely not the King that Konami promises every year.

Maybe they should shutup and give us a good game. Every year it is the same promise, and fans can only take so many dissapointments. Sales do not lie.

Konami needs to stop focusing on stupid details. Oh the crowds, oh the lighting. Who cares. Your game is broken. Horrible AI within your own team, terrible online, who cares about facial hair.

Sadness turned into dissapoinment, now turning into anger.

@Hangar18 - do you even know what you are talking about? I think it's quite clear that FIFA uses emergent behaviors (read up on that!). But as for PES, it is a pretty good entry this year and if 2 companies battle the user - hopefully - wins. FIFA - the ball is in your half.

Defensive AI has no awareness, CPU AI doesn't make fouls or crosses, tons of sliding animations, poor ref AI , no true physics engine, horrible weather effects, the same PES 2014 awful FK and penalty systems, etc.

Was expecting much better after last year disaster, which by the way got great reviews despite one of the worst football games of all time.

Modes: BAL and ML are exactly like last year, the new and ONLY addition is a ultimate team rip off called my club. No innovation, either the same old thing or a weaker FIFA mode.

Edit Mode: A big part of the PES series was also destroyed this year, either you play PC's last gen poorly optimized game, or you play in the PS4 with North London and no chance of changing emblems or adding kit logos. The promised "Stadium Editor" is a joke and 12 stadiums in total is a even bigger one. Licensing fights aside, there is no excuse why they couldn't add at least 10 more fake stadiums.

Scripted goals will make a really bad player get through your defence and score, no matter if he's all out of stamina.
Passing the ball is nice for the most part of it, but sometimes it will look as totally random. You can easily see it whenever you try a fast low cross.
Scoring when 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper is odd. Sometimes your player will score every single attempt, even if he's in a bad mood. Some other times he will miss it everytime, even if in the best mood.
Everytime a player accidentally gets hit by the ball right before the goal, the AI assigns it as own goal.
The opposite team will almost never commit a foul. Even if they are losing 3:0 and you are about to score the 4th. Even if your goal means they are being eliminated from the tournament. No fouls.
You can score from a low cross from the corner kick with your shortest player. Many times. Because players are way too bad when positioning for corner kicks.
So, does your favorite team have that one play they make on every game? Well, that's not scripted in here. You must do it yourself.
Some licensing problems made some players have their names and looks changed. Licensing problems at this age is a childish mistake.

Konami's first next gen effort is a big improvement over any of the Xbox360 instalments and comes so close to greatness only to be held back by a few niggling issues. There is of course the usual missing licenses but bigger issues, such as AI controlled players that don't always make the runs or fall to cut out passes that they should, a rainbow flick skill move that is too easy to pull off and referees that constantly fail to book or send off players for late or off the ball fouls can sometimes make matches a frustrating experience.

There are a number of game modes, both off and online (which after a few initial problems works really well), to play including the MyClub mode which is basically FIFA Ultimate teams in all but name so there is no shortage of options.

With bit more evolution for next years game PES could once again become something very special but for now this is good, but flawed, football game.

PES 2015 is rough in some aspects, the graphics are not on pair with FIFA but its gameplay is the best of this "next-gen". (Sorry, but its impossible to write a PES 2015 review without comparing it with its biggest rival)

FIFA is that kind of game that seems suited for one specific playing style. Its a game based on lobbed trough balls, where any tough matches are decided when the midfield Modric just make a impossible pass to Ronaldo, who find himself in front of the goal free to score.

You won't finde in PES 2015 the worst aspect of FIFA series: scripting. FIFA seems to force situations like last minute goals, last minute impossible saves or balls hitting the post. It seems in some matches the game won't let you win, or the game want the match to be exciting, thats why hitting the post is so common during a FIFA match (actually perhaps in 9 out 10 matches you play online the ball will hit the post at some point). Scripting is not a new thing in videogames. Since ISS from N64 it was not hard to realize that the CPU was cheating in some games, but that only happened in Player vs CPU games in hardest levels. In FIFA, even playing against real players I always get the feeling that the match was not natural as it was supposed to be. For example, it seems the game decides that in some moments the CB will be faster than the forward, and in the others will just let the striker overrun de defense to easily score.

FIFA is also a beginner friendly game. FIFA is perhaps the biggest game franchise nowadays, so they must please the casual gamers. PES is a game that takes time to know even simple things, like defending.

Tactics in PES 2015 really works. In FIFA, even if you decide to park the bus and defend deep, you will realize that many times the opponent will find your defense wide open (or Ronaldo will receive that perfect lobbed trough ball free of marking). So, if your opponent decides to play an ultra attacking game, you will easily score in counter attack, while in FIFA playing ultra attacking football with Real Madrid is the way to go, since in EA game high pressuring is really easy, all you need to do is two buttons pressed and let the players do the work.

Defending is also really nice in PES 2015. Most casual football fans care little about tactics, defense and only care about scoring goals and fancy skills. FIFA 14 and specially 15 were designed to please those players. You never really controls your defense. In PES I always feel like I'm controlling my defense, and usually when the back four make a mistake, its my fault, while in FIFA many times I blamed poor AI.

But its far from a perfect game. GKs work 95% of the time, but on some occasions they will make really annoying mistakes. Konami doesn't have the huge licenses you will find in FIFA, but they MUST improve the kits and badge design. That kind of lazy work is not acceptable in a PS4 game. For example, since 2005 Chelsea is London FC, with the same awful badge that looks the work 8 years using Paint, not to mention the kits with lazy designs, colors and textures, that make you feel like you are playing a PS2 game. No to mention the few stadium options. I don't care if they can't use licensed designs, they must give us more generic stadiums. While in FIFA you get up to 40 licensed stadiums and 30 generic stadiums, in PES we have less than 20. Its unbelievable that in 2015 they are selling a football game with only 18 arenas.

Including a generic german league is also a must. Lack of license is not an excuse for lack of teams or players.

Refereeing needs improvement. It just doesn't make any sense. In some simple fouls the referee will give a yellow, in other moments your player will get killed and not even a foul...

Final word: the last time I bought a PES game was PES 6 back in 2006. When PES series arrived in 7th generations its really lost its way. PES 2007 was bad, and so was every single PES game I played since then. After playing FIFA 14 last year, I got really frustrated with EA series. After FIFA 15 demo was out, I decided I was going to skip 2015 football games. Somehow I decided to give PES a try again, after completely giving up the series for the past 8 years. To be honest it has been quite a long time since I find myself enjoying a football video game that much. But when you pay a full price for a football game, you are not only paying for the gameplay. PES suffer from lack of license and lazy overall game design that really hurts the game after some months.

Another problem is the poorly created online environment, with unbalanced matches and leagues where you need to win 7 out of 10 game in order to get promotion. The exciting online gameplay is not present in online mode, that feels a minimalist version of the offline one.

Solid game. 7 out of 10.

The gameplay isn't bad, but it isn't good either. Controlling players off the ball, especially when trying to defend, is frustrating, as every player seems to move with the mobility of a bloated junkie in withdrawal.
This is unsurprisingly a pain, as you're up against a laser sharp AI and it takes your players half a second to react to your input.
Currently playing the game on Top Player difficulty with no passing assistance, and more and more faults come to surface. You try to make a through pass to Robben, the cursor switches to him, you immediately hold sprint, and he just jogs side-by-side with the defender until he magically 'advances' past Robben and kicks the ball away.
Every time the opposition clear the ball, your player WILL chase after it. Canceling it with LT+RT doesn't work, ever.
The game doesn't seem to know how to deal with passes when you have assistance off either. If any of you have played FIFA, it's like setting everything to manual and trying to pass using through balls (Y) instead. The AI are slow to react to it and make horrible mistakes trying to get to the ball.
In one situation I took a successful throw in, and did an accurate back-heel pass to my teammate (pass-assistance disabled). He proceeded to run away from the ball down the wing as if I had just tried a throughball and instead my winger decided to sprint towards it from 20 meters away. I of course lost possession.
On the upside though, the ball physics are undoubtedly good and make for fairly realistic gameplay due to the trajectory having an effect on where the ball ends up. Rebounds are unpredictable and the weight of the ball seems to be very accurate. Also, the game doesn't seem scripted like FIFA is, and the difficulty of the opposition AI stays consistent throughout.

BUT, the refereeing & tackling system is abysmal, the worst I've ever seen.
I won't even get into that, apart from mentioning that you can get rugby tackled or even physically assaulted by the AI and not even get a foul called your way.

Free kicks in this game seem worse than in PES12 and 13. I don't understand why they added some hilariously bad FIFA2002-like trajectory display thing, it was perfect as it was two or three years ago.
It just makes it even more difficult to get the ball to go where you want it, and you can never exactly tell.
Other than that, they are still better than in FIFA.
Become a Legend isn't worth getting into. If you're planning on getting this game (a year late for whatever reason), for BAL mode, then don't bother.
They've been removing features from it year by year, it's bland and difficult to enjoy (even if you really try).
The AI NEVER pass to you, unless you call for the ball. I spent almost two seasons playing out 15 minute long games as a center forward, and I don't think I ever once had a winger actually cross the ball to me. They just jog with it no matter how many times you tell them to pass to you, until eventually softly floating it into the box past your head or running it out of play. You don't get rewarded for being in the right positions at the right time ever, at all.
Master league is decent, but no more than that. Transfers are completely random, and all the other teams NEVER change their formations and tactics. I don't really understand why.

The presentation is sub-par too. The PC version seems to be intentionally toned down visually, for whatever reason. I guess they want even less sales.
The one major up-side to PES2015, is the tactical system, which I hope stays the way it is (as long as they add the wingback position too). Definitely superior to the joke that is FIFA.

To sum it up, it's not a bad game, but 6/10 is the most I'd give it, I just don't want this to be a 'positive' review, because it isn't. It has its flaws, which become more obvious at higher difficulties and the more you get into it. It would easily get a higher score if they had actually put some effort into the refereeing system and not made the movement of players so sluggish, which are the two main cons for me at the moment.
Hopefully Konami doesn't take another two steps back next year, and builds on this. With hopefully positive development and focus on the right areas of the game, next years' title could easily be 8/10.
