The recurring theme here is substance. On paper, creating a wave-based shooter doesn’t sound all that inventive or ambitious, yet Raw Data is just that. In a bid to capitalise on the VR gold rush, we’ve seen plenty of smaller, lacklustre shooting galleries, but Survios effortlessly puts them all to shame.

When you take a step back and look at what Raw Data is attempting to accomplish on the PSVR, it’s remarkable what they were able to pull off. Better yet, it’s one of the few VR experiences that I’ve played that feel like they’ve graduated from extended tech demo to a fully formed gaming experience. Unfortunately, while the ambition is certainly there, it feels like the hardware is once again preventing a standout title from achieving its potential greatness.

Raw Data offers more than your usual shooting gallery VR game. The ability to move around makes the game feel far more substantial, with the four different characters and their abilities offering plenty of gameplay nuance. The lack of enemy and location variety is a shame, as are the technical limitations brought on by the hardware but if you're a fan of shooting stuff in VR then it's definitely worth checking out.

Challenging, immersive and very fun, Raw Data is a great VR experience, although the lack of multiplayer modes on PS4 is a noticeable shortcoming.

In spite of a lack of different enemies and occasionally unreliable motion controls, Raw Data nonetheless stands as one of the more intuitive and satisfying shooters available on PSVR.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Raw Data is a great game, and is the first VR-Only game I have played. The pacing of the action was done fabulously, with an opportunity to take breaks between waves being great for people new to the more action-packed side of VR, while still giving you the option to skip the break entirely. The story is ok, but seems to take a bit too much inspiration from the Will Smith film "I, Robot" if you ask me (a great film btw). The class system is a nice addition, and the weapon progression helps as you get further through the levels. The only glitch I have found so far is that the "Crawlers" seem to occasionally get stuck on your body, usually behind you, making it hard to shoot them. Overall, I would say this is a great game with amazing graphics and a great story (despite the story seeming so derivative). Expand

I ran into one bug when the game loaded I was standing in the room and had no dialog or objective. A quick reboot and the problem was solved. Really love this game, no drifting issues with aiming, great story, voice acting. The story is fast-paced and the action can get overwhelming which i love...I feel like current VR titles have been way too easy (except RE7). And i can't say enough about the graphical quality. They absolutely sucked out every ounce of power that the PS4 has. I don't know if the PS4 pro has any enhancements but i can tell you that it runs great on it. I'm really hoping they add multiplayer like the other VR headsets have. My buddies and I were disappointed to find out it didn't make the final cut. Absolutely a must buy for a PSVR owner. They've moved the bar way up for other developers to reach. So impressed with this title, can't wait to get home and keep playing. Expand

Actually, I'd day Farpoint, Archangel and Raw Data are the best games on VR for PS4 so far. But of course, none of them is perfect.

Graphically, Raw Data is really good, but it could be even better with more work. There is a lack of detail in the scenarios and most of them are pretty small. With that size, they should be photorrealistic! And they are not. Another thing that bothers me is when textures regenerate for something a bit better when you are near something. They should do that much farther in order to not be a noticeable change. But most of VR games have this issue.

Another issue is the control. You can play with different settings in the options menu, but none of them works as good as expected. Not the teleport, not the manual movement and not the combination between both. It's incredibly uncomfortable moving around, whatever you chose in control settings. And of course, if you move your arms a bit faster than you should, one of your arms will magically disappear...

When it happens, you should be able to reset the camera or controllers properly in order to have everything in place again, but... it doesn't work well. Shame.

Anyway, even with those several serious technical issues, I have to say Raw Data is awesome. It's funny, fast, beautiful, addictive... It's great! And the 4 different characters to choose are an interesting addition, even when there is only one (the guy with the two guns) that won't drive you crazy. With the technical issues of the game, whatever other character won't work properly for more than one or two minutes. You'll lose a hand in the cyberspace within seconds.

Enemies are great, but it would be great if there were two or three more kinds of them. They are a little bit repetitive after a while.

And it would be great too if there were more levels with necessary movement across different areas, rooms, corridors, etc. Most of the stages are only a small space/room/area. But in general terms, I insist: this is one of the best three VR games for PS4 so far.

When it works, it's easily one of the very best experiences for PSVR. It has 4 playable characters and 10 levels along with various difficulty levels. Although the heart of the game is a sort of wave shooter/tower defense setup, levels 4 through 10 add extra elements to the mix to ensure the concept doesn't get stale. Shooting and slicing your way through robots is an absolute blast and the enemy and level variety really keeps you on your toes. You end up feeling like an action movie star as you come out on top during the game's later levels. Each playable character varies greatly and are all fun in their own ways...when they work.

The problem here is PSVR's camera setup. Unless you have an absolutely ideal setup with a camera above the user looking down and perfect lighting conditions, you'll find the tracking while using the bow and arrows and shotgun to be awful as the controllers frequently line up with the headset leaving the camera unable to see every light source clearly. Unfortunately, my TV wasn't tall enough to allow for this setup and I am unable to mount the camera to a wall (something which Sony doesn't even recommend) leaving two of the four playable characters sort of broken.

The game is also pretty glitchy. Sometimes you'll spawn in the main lobby in the floor and have to teleport up. Sometimes enemies will get stuck in walls and you have to randomly run around shooting hoping you can hit them to finish the wave. Some users (not me) report the game crashing during level 7 rendering it impossible to continue.

It's a huge shame because really, this game is way more fun when it works than even an 8/10 would suggest and is some of the most fun I've had with my PS4 let alone the PSVR headset. It's a perfect showcase of how VR can make what appears to be a boring game while watching on the TV into an absolute romp in the headset. Unfortunately, it's also a perfect showcase of how PSVR's relatively cheap setup can end up compromising the experience.
