    So single player is buggy af. Worst controls of any game I've ever played, pretty much every side mission is bugged as well as a lot of the main story missions. Side missions are pointless because they are mostly bugged, main story is boring and slow, challenges are painfully tedious. And online is pay to win credit card mode with almost no content and nothing to do.

    Rockstar games are dying. Rockstar kill games with online. The last good game was GTA SA. GTA IV was buggy. In GTA V, the plot was completely killed, for the sake of drawing money from the players. RDR2 repeats her fate. We need DLC's not for RDO!

    I want to love this game. But after spending over 30 hours on it with at least 7 spent on useless animations I must admit defeat. It feels like Rockstar have sacrificed a lot of things for the sake of realism. On my wishlist for a patch is;
    - An option in the settings for shorter animations
    - The ability to cook all meat of the same kind at once - More responsive and faster aiming - Skip    I want to love this game. But after spending over 30 hours on it with at least 7 spent on useless animations I must admit defeat. It feels like Rockstar have sacrificed a lot of things for the sake of realism. On my wishlist for a patch is;
    - An option in the settings for shorter animations
    - The ability to cook all meat of the same kind at once
    - More responsive and faster aiming
    - Skip the animal rating, a pelt gets ruined if you use the wrong weapon or shoot it multiple times it's ruined if you do it right the pelt/carcass is perfect
    - Horses that doesn't fall because you rode to fast over a rock so small you didn't even notice it

    My wishlist for a future game is;
    - All of the above
    - Please, please, please let us as players be creative in how we choose to tackle issues in story missions

The story/missions were terrible and extremely repetitive and lazy. Horrible writing and worse gameplay. The slow crawl is what does it though, hunting, miserable, every time you step into a camp and CANNOT run, miserable... The world isThis game was the biggest let down in years...     Au delà de l'aspect technique, ce jeu est nul. Ce n'est même pas un jeu vidéo, c'est un film interactif. La physique du personnage est atroce, la lenteur est déconcertante, la mécanique de shoot est nulle, la liberté est inexistante ce qui est un comble pour un monde ouvert, le fait qu'on puisse passer les missions ou les pnj qui agissent à votre place est une insulte au jeu vidéo.     I really liked the first red dead. But even after playing this one for more than 10 hours I find it so boring!!! I want to like this game but I just can't. There is a lot to do but I find almost all of it boring.

    I was disappointed because I had high expectations to this game,because of the amazing reviews. However I was let down. The game and story reminds me of a Western movie rather than a shooting game, and the game needs creativity in order to be amazing.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is amazing an all but heres the twist. this game you literally have to do side missions in order to do the main mission. As you play, you'll realize how boring this game is by just riding your horse to point A to point B. Then after you finish that, you start shooting people by just aiming and shooting.
    theres really no fun in this game by just riding horse. The Story is good but it takes way to long to get there, too many side missions you have to do in order to do main missions. even some of the main missions aren't even important. Online is the worst of all. When you finish your missions in online, you won't have any more missions. which means you can't level up unless you pvp. Pvp is the thing that makes online bad. whoever aim first and shoot wins. Nothing is special in online. After Arthur died. Playing as john is pretty boring. it also takes forever to get into the main mission. Because alot of missions you'll do as john is pretty pointless.    … Expand

    I think that this game is very boring. I'll admit that it is a very beatiful game and út has a great game mechanic, bit I think that it's only a GTA V copy with western style. I should've made this game tó a GTA V DLC instead of a complete AAA game.

    Minor spoilers(very minor, should not really matter to anyone, but be warned if you don't want to know anything about the story)

    I really liked the first RDR and really hoped that this would be a great game. I did dredge through this monotonous snooze-fest of beautiful scenery and was just left with the annoyance of time wasted with no payoff. The annoyance that hit me first in the    Minor spoilers(very minor, should not really matter to anyone, but be warned if you don't want to know anything about the story)

    I really liked the first RDR and really hoped that this would be a great game. I did dredge through this monotonous snooze-fest of beautiful scenery and was just left with the annoyance of time wasted with no payoff.

    The annoyance that hit me first in the game is that while it has amazing attention to details, it's in all the wrong places. Like the horse testicles are modeled, but no one bothered to have even a cursory glance at how horses behave. You really can't ride a horse off a cliff, unless there's a lot of trust to begin with. Also, you can't ride a horse into a tree, even if you wanted. In RDR 2, the horses will run into trees and off cliffs, even if you have just stolen the horse. This is just stupid and immersion breaking. It's like the devs have never actually seen a live horse, let alone interacted with one in any capacity. Also, the movement of there character movement is nicely physically modeled but they control like they are walking on stilts.

    The story was also just phoned in. The same story arc is told several times with minor variance. The characters are mostly at least adequately written, but the story does not reflect these characters in any way and forces and even requires them to behave in a very different manner than what the characters would reasonably do. The story also drags on and on with not a lot of story to tell. This is not up to Rockstar's usual standards.

    The gameplay is clunky, not a deal breaker, but nothing to write home about. The less said about the horses, the better.

    The worst thing about the game is in its pacing. It does seem like a giant middle finger pointed at the player. Most of the time is spent going from from point A to point B. There's also an astounding amount of busy work that's neither challenging or fun. The absolute low-point for me was a house-building sequence, where you just tapped a single button for several minutes, what engaging gameplay. There are some high points in the game but they are few and far between. The mission lengths were also all over the place with no real indication, whether the mission would be a shorter thing or 1 hour ride-to-several-places. Not that the missions couldn't be partitioned in a way since most of the long missions are spent just going to somewhere, slowly. The completely arbitrary mission lengths would not be so annoying, if you could save in the missions and not having to play a boring riding sequence again if you want to go to sleep or something.

    All this being said, RDR 2 has a good game in it, but it's just buried under a huge pile of pretentious disregard for the medium. Then again, the single player story might just be a lazy throw-in for a cash-grab multiplayer.    … Expand

Want to sell some of your invent to make some cash, well, you better get ready to take a four-hour horse-ride in cinematic mode to get to someone who will buy something off you that's supposedly of high intrinsic value like a legendary bear pelt. You can talk to every NPC, isn't that amazing? Erm, no, two sentence non-sequitur conversations where you have to defuse the situation if you dare get within six feet of the person you're talking to. Maybe Rockstar was onto social distancing several years ago. Well done to Rockstar for predicting social distancing and projecting it via time travel into the Old West of 1899.

    I'm done with this game and I barely started it. Please, save your money. Do not buy into the hype and do not buy this game with good money.

    I'm usually a huge fan of Rockstar games but not this one. There are far better open-world games where interactions with NPCs are far more meaningful and side-missions are more interesting than a cinematic set-piece with a bear after five minutes of following clues and a scent trail. There are also far more interesting action-adventure games, you know, the ones with action...and adventure... Not just a big world and impressive graphics.    … Expand

The missions are horrible, starting a mission takes too much time. You have to ride back and forth a long way on your horse and there is a cutscene for every little thing. Some of the cutscenes are useless. The missions isn't even worth completing since you just have to get on your horse after and ride again somewhere else to start a repetitive mission and boring cutscene. Every move you do results in a cutscene. The character has more cutscenes or need to make a movement to interact with an object. Like when sitting, mounting your horse or walking inside a store. The movements could be better and faster. Many missions were boring and not adding anything to the game. How is fishing, taking wildlife photography or help some circus folks catching animals relevant to being an outlaw. There are not really any rewards for completing a mission. You earn money that you end up losing because Arthur dies. There ain't even anything good to spend money on in this game. The weapons are bad in combat and you can't ride fast then the npc can't catch up. I hate that you have to wait or follow some slow npc around the whole game. While playing a mission i rode the horse wagon a little bit in front of the npc who hat to sit in the wagon with me. Then the npc couldn't walk a few steps to get in so i had to start the mission over. The npcs just ruin the game for you. I never felt like I was playing but just waiting for npc. I don't get how enemies can survive three or four shots from weapons. The game is reliable on doing it exactly right or it gets broken.… Expand

    And this game is a 10/10. It's the best game of the decade. It has everything. Maybe, just maybe a tiny bit too linear, but that's the assumption of the game. I don't mind. It allows for everything else to be absolutely perfect. The only game I've ever enjoyed as much from start to finish.

There is a such thing as trying to make a game too realistic, so many of the survival and side mechanics are just annoying and can ruin enjoyment. You can no longer have the fun you could in red dead 1 (i.e. lassoying someone up) as someone will just see you and will inform the lawman. This game just went way to far in the realism department and it ruined a lot of the fun for me. To conclude, this game could have been great but they ruined a lot of the fun with over tedious animations and mechanics. This makes me genuinely worried about GTA 6.

    -well written characters
    -excellent detail to small things
    -interesting story for most of the game

    cons:
    -far too long story
    -no progression such as unlocking new skills or items
    too realistic (i.e. having to eat, feed you horse, drink other elixsars)
    -animations can be too slow and tedious
    -shooting (mainly aiming) does not feel good
    -controls that should have been updated a long time ago
    -hat constantly fall off
    - animals have different conditions (which just makes hunting more annoying)

    the most boring game I've played since 1996. Gameplay is seamless and pathetic. Graphics is good indeed. I literally search internet how long this "game" will last because of its pase. In its 23d it doesn't entertained at all. Slow and pointless like a tar..

    THE MOST BORING GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED! Rockstar is clearly more interested in what they can do instead of what they should do. Love playing a game to do in game manual labour, and the act of playing this game feels the same. I play games to have fun, not slog through boring quest after boring task. Wish I could get a refund.

Do anything bad = having to pay ridiculous amounts of money to clear your name. The game dissuades and discourages you from playing it like past Rockstar open world titles
    -Terrible pacing. The game is just simply too long and the story doesn’t get interesting until the end of Chapter 3. By then I’d put over 30 hours into this game. It shouldn’t take 30+ hours to finally get into a story. And even when I finally got into it, I just couldn’t be bothered to finish the game due to the boring minute to minute gameplay
    -Realism Schemalism: There’s attention to detail and then there’s obsession with detail. RDR2’s realism is too much that it actually ends up getting in the way of enjoying the game as a game. Get ready to trade in your real life responsibilities and chores for digital video game ones… including, but not limited to: tapping X/A on your controller to get around anywhere on this overly large map (Larger than GTA V and that game had cars, planes, Jets, etc… and fast travel isn’t unlocked til later in the game), feed Arthur, bathe Arthur, refill your health, stamina and dead eye core, contribute to the camp’s fund box, wear the appropriate clothes for the appropriate weather, bring food back to camp, feed your horse, pat your horse, brush your horse, buy horse reviver before long trips because your horse can die, get stranded in the middle of nowhere and be forced to walk up to 10 minutes because your horse has a maximum whistle hearing range, clean your guns, equip your guns from your horse because you can’t carry all your weapons on your person because… realism… hooray. It’s not fun, it’s tedious for the sake of being tedious and slow.

    Objective Cons:
    -Bad/clunky controls
    -If you played the original Red Dead Redemption, you already know how the story ends so the story doesn’t carry as much weight


    Let me preface this by saying I’ve generally been a lifelong fan of Rockstar Games and the Open World experiences they create. After playing the masterpiece that is Red Dead Redemption 1, I had high expectations for Red Dead Redemption 2. Those expectations were not met, but more importantly, neither were the expectations I’ve come to expect from a Rockstar Open World game. For as long as I can remember, Rockstar Games have emphasized and prioritized player freedom into the core design of their open world games. Red Dead Redemption 2 seems more interested in showing off how realistic a game can be and telling its slog of a story rather than on what the player can, or what the player wants to do. No, I wasn’t expecting something like GTA but I expected something more along the lines of the first Red Dead Redemption. The prequel was more grounded in reality than the likes of something like GTA but it still knew it was a game and still let you have your fun within the open world. In contrast, Red Dead Redemption 2 actively feels like it punishes the player for trying to play the game like you would any other past Rockstar Game… it feels more restrictive. This game doesn’t ask you to play it, it asks you to live it. Unfortunately, most days I simply want to come home and escape the mundane and monotonous aspects of life by playing a video game that lets me escape. Red Dead Redemption 2 only confronts the player with more chores and responsibilities, and unlike other games, doesn’t even try to gameify the responsibilities. Albeit digital, chores still feel like chores. Overall, a game that has the potential to be this boring and dull gameplaywise can never be considered a 10 by anyone that considers themselves a fan of the vide game medium.    … Expand

    First of all, the controls feel slow and clumsy. That makes the experience uncomfortable, and the feeling doesn't go away after hours and hours of gameplay: you never get used to it. Besides, many actions require stupid button combinations that other games solve in a much simpler way. C'mon, why would I need to hold L2 while I choose an action with another button just to choose what do I want to say to an NPC? Instead of changing to the dialogue menu, as everybody else does? That's not innovative, is making complex a simple thing. The same goes for the menus. I've seen simpler menus to choose what magic, among all, do I want to use on FFVII Remake, for example, than to choose what medicine should I use on RDR2.

    And here cames the worst: the game is terribly boring. It's like the creators didn't want you to play it, but just to sit down and watch it like a film. I really love single player narrative games, but most of them (Horizon saga, GOW, Uncharted saga, ...) try to involve the player to PLAY a story, giving that "play" part the importance it deserves. Here, it's more like if you have to make a constant effort to let the anti-player-quality-of-life mechanics pass. For example, if you fail a mission, you will start it again from the very beggining, because there is no autosave during missions, nor any chance to manually save your progress. Now, think of a mission that lasts, let's say 40 minutes, where everything gets more difficult during the last 10 minutes. You'll have to repeat every part, including cinematic sequences (some you can skip, some you can't). That doesn't make the game more difficult -just more tedious.

    When it cames to the story, I think it's well told, but the rythm is too slow. It's just as if there was the intention to make it long with content that is not that interesting. That makes the story interesting at some key moments, but too irregular. I didn't feel close to the characters at all, but this last point could be just me, and with no doubt the anti-plyer-quality-of-life mechanics I talked about didn't make me be in the best mood to feel close to anything in the game.

    To sum up, I had really high expectations for this game because of the high rating, the GOTY and all, and it totally let me down. I tried to enjoy it, really tried it because once you spend the money you want to make it count, but I ended up focussing on finishing it as quick as possible to pass to a more enjoyable game.    … Expand

    The game is boring and too long it could have been shorter by half. The game world is mostly empty and uninteresting, traveling on horseback takes too much time. The plot is linear and the player has almost no influence on its progress. The main character Arthur Morgan is annoying and complains all the time, hard to like, the other playable character John Marston is simp.

The voice acting is absolutely awful. Arthur, the main character, sounds like a caricature from a cartoon or a sketch. Most of the others are no better. The accents are just plain wrong.     The visuals are decent although it's clear that there are a few templates that are applied repeatedly. The controls are decent although complex. Sometimes doing something correctly involves finger positions that are impossible for many humans. Also wagon driving at speeds faster than a slow walk is similar to driving the Batmobile in the Batman games. If the route deviates slightly from a straight line be prepared for the controls to be imprecise in the extreme.

    The story seems more like a random series of events than a coherent narrative. The dialogue ranges from inept to moderately interesting.

    It’s an huge, outstanding piece of art – worth the hard-earned cash as well as countless hours that are needed to get to know at least some of the attractions of Rockstar’s rendition of Wild West. For those who put story first – the biggest virtue of Red Dead Redemption 2 is that it sets the stage for RDR 1 and does it wonderfully. [13/2018, p.40]

    Amazing not only for Western lovers. No other game has probably offered so many options to express yourself in the open world, and at the same time did not have such an interesting, rough and moving story. A magnificent experience, with a slightly slower start. [Issue#291]
