  • Summary: Redout: Space Assault is arcade space battle, coupling the trademark Redout adrenaline with the thrill of combat. Outsmart, outmanoeuvre, overpower, outclass your opponents in lightning-fast, adrenaline-inducing single-player space combat.

Redout: Space Assault is an unexpected departure for the series but is a solid, enjoyable and reasonably polished experience let down initially by slightly unintuitive controls, some missions that don't really land and visuals that can be a bit cluttered. Stick with it though and this is definitely worth playing.

It may offer solid space combat but Redout: Space Assault's lack of ambition to try anything new holds it back from being special.

Most players will probably blast through Redout: Space Assault in just a few hours. It’s a game that doesn’t try to do anything special, but it provides enough entertainment, particularly if you enjoy some arcade-style space-shooting action. And for less than a tenner, that’s fair enough.

In no way, shape or form could Redout: Space Assault be considered required playing. It’s simplistic and more than a little disappointing for what the developer can actually produce. That doesn’t mean it’s without any merit, though. Folks looking for a new Starfox type game will find plenty to enjoy here so long as they know that there are some lumps in the gravy. When it’s hitting its mark, this is an extremely exciting game. When it stumbles, though, it stumbles hard. For the budget price, there are worse ways to spend an afternoon, but there isn’t anything here to justify more than that one afternoon.

Redout Space Assault feels like two games; an enjoyable arcade shooter on rails, and a free-movement space-sim with no exploration. Glitches, unbalanced difficulty, and a lack of any worthwhile story weigh down what could have been much better.

Redout: Space Assault dabbles in numerous space shooter concepts but doesn't strike a chord with any of them.

Don't be fooled by the impressive visuals. This dated and deeply unsatisfying arcade shooter manages to make space combat feel flimsy, boring and anything but immersive. Perhaps on a mobile phone, its limitations can be overlooked but on a console it's not worth bothering with.

Welp, if you're a huge Starfox 64 fan you could spend $10 and an afternoon in worse ways. But even as a budget title, this game will haveWelp, if you're a huge Starfox 64 fan you could spend $10 and an afternoon in worse ways. But even as a budget title, this game will have most scratching their heads with some perplexingly bad elements and more than one crises of identity. The game can't decide if it wants to be on-rails or free-flying. The game can't decide if it had tight, satisfying controls or loose, unresponsive ones. The game can't decide if it has several repetitive missions or complex missions. Problems like this hold the game back throughout, so that soon after the initial promise wears off it becomes a bit of a slog to complete. Probably still worth the time and money if you're forgiving.
