Jan 22, 2019By trying to please so many different players the game will probably not satisfy anyone completely. Resident Evil veterans will feel like it is a bit too simple and unfaithful. New players will wonder about the 90s logic in spending so much time looking for keys so you can politely unlock doors when your backpack is loaded with rocket launchers and oversized shotguns which could just as easily have blown them off their hinges.

Jan 23, 2019If there’s one issue I have with the game, it’s that the deliciously explosive headshots, which spray brain and skull across the walls and floors, are so hard to achieve. Too many times have I had to waste four or five shells trying to take a zombie down with accurate headshots, only for them to get back up again, head still intact. In a game about maiming the undead, it seems a disappointing imbalance. But I suppose the fact that this is my biggest gripe with a remake of a two decade old game says it all.

Jan 22, 2019The remake forces a somewhat ill-fitting gameplay frame onto environments and atmosphere that doesn’t accommodate it well. It exhibits some inspiring confidence as it presses forward without fear. But it’s that last part that gives me pause: without fear. It’s a fine game but an inconsistent one. As a remake that stumbles at times, it is neither a reinvention or a completely coherent celebration. It’s something sloppier, if captivating. It is pulse-pounding and a must play for horror fans, sometimes experimental but also superficial and rough.

Jan 22, 2019Every inch of the Resident Evil 2 remake is engrossing. It’s a masterclass in environmental design and atmosphere. It blends action, puzzles, and story into a well-balanced and fun concoction. All of that together makes RE2 an early game of the year contender for 2019. There’s just one thing I can’t get out of my head. The Resident Evil 2 remake almost broke me.
