Just as addicting as the original if not better. Resident Evil HD adds to the game-play and puzzles but still keeps the essence of what made the game a classic. The remastered version also looks gorgeous in 1080. Here is the cherry on top.. ITS ONLY $20! Good job Capcom. I've been asking for a HD version for a while and now I finally have it.

If you enjoyed the original or the improved Gamecube version, this might be worth a look. If you tried RE and weren’t a fan, there likely isn’t enough here to convert you.
At the end of the day, however, there is one certainty: I would have preferred to have bought this game three times rather than having purchased The Evil Within once.
As an aside, but keeping with the horror theme, if you find yourself alone in the dark one night, do yourself a favor, hop onto PSN, download and play P.T. Just don’t do it in tighty-whiteys; some stains just never come out.

Played the game in 2020. Of course graphics is not that good as in Resident Evil 2 Remake, control is quite archaic etc etc. But for game which initially has been released almost 25 years ago gameplay, plot an other stuff are very ok.

Very pleased to rediscover this classic game in a remastered version with a revisited gameplay and settings. The journey is short but there's a lot replay value with 2 stories ( 2 main characters) and some speedrun challenge. A very good game.

Beautifully loyal to the original, possibly my favorite game of all time. Not everyone will enjoy it as much as I did but well worth a try for anyone. I even feel so strongly about this game I still play it in 2020, and came back to write this fawning review.

I can take my time, play at my own pace. It really builds tension having to revisit areas, knowing that a crimson zombie (or some other surprise) could be waiting to ambush you. The game doesn't let you rest often, and kudos to that. It is challenging. It is rewarding. It is a long game, especially with two playable characters with varied campaigns. It is nostalgic. And most importantly it is fun. I'd give it an 8.5 if I could. Expand

Personally, I can control it just fine. If you want to change it up a bit, you can play the game as a different character. This game also has a bunch of rewards for completing it in different ways, so there is plenty of replay value. I can’t recommend this game enough for horror fans. I absolutely adore this game and it is easily in my top ten favorite video games of all time. Expand

It was the first of the RE games in using coop as a core gameplay and is the best one. It works better here than in RE5 and 6. Easily the scariest game in the franchise, the old school gameplay still managed to make me jump out of my seat and fill me with a sense of dread in every hall of the mansion. there is no reason to play the original, everything the original does is done better here and is way more accessible. you have the ability to play with the analog stick (Im not sure if that was a feature in the gamecube version or not) which is much nicer than tank controls, but if had to use them, I would be fine with it, but I know that's gonna be a make or break thing for most newcomers, for me its fine because I played a few of the original games. So even though some people may think the controls are old fashioned, I think they add to the tension and sense of vulnerability to the game and I'm sure that was the intention when the game was first released and in my opinion still works well today, in fact its quite refreshing as apposed to the saturated amount of first person horror games on the market right now. the fixed camera angle is able to achieve a different kind of horror that you simply can't do with over the shoulder or first person games. Instead of being focused on what is directly in front of you at all times, your focus dwells on the environment and makes you want to take the game slowly and cautiously, then when something happens you have to suddenly change your pace and react quickly creating these intense moments of panic. The story isn't necessarily "good" but it is charming and plenty of fun, same goes for the voice acting, even though its better than the original game, its still not great, but I wouldn't have it any other way because its really funny. the pacing is excellent, the puzzles are fun, and the gameplay is subtle yet intense the whole way through. one thing that I don't like at all is the inventory system. It adds some sense of strategy by limiting what your able to carry at one time but its more of a hassle than anything. otherwise its an awesome game with very memorable characters and moments that will stick with for a long time and maybe keep you awake at night. In the other way the inventory system is crap and you'll take some time going back to the item box for managing your inventory (you can have 6 weapons, but not 7 keys, it just doesn't make sense and can get on your nerves). My other issue with the game is multiple endings: the endings because the license continue following only one of those endings making the choice of the players no important at all.

I like the new aggressive zombies and that you can lit them on fire by having a fuelcanteen with you, but it takes space and you have to little space to begin with, so maybe they could have placed the keys outside the box or giving us two extra spaces, without ruining the gameplay, still to much running forward and back and then forward again for my taste. So just some little things here and there would make this a perfect game, but still one of my favourite games on the ps4!

I recall being a 13 year old playing the original and being absolutely terrified which when watching the youtube videos of the original release is laughable. It also reminded me of just how much better my 13 year old self was at playing games. Either I've adapted to change and play the new age controlled games differently, or I've just become far too comfortable with an unlimited backpack, infinite saves and 360 degree movement with the added bonus of being able to strafe the hell out of the way of things

First things first. Resident Evil is as terrifying today to my 31 year old reasonably brave fully grown legally adult self as it was was back in the 90's. The lighting and sound of the HD remake is great, meaning a flash of lightning can result in unimaginable terror at the zombie creature staring at you through the window, only to realise a moment later that it's just your reflection.

The backpack system, although frustrating at times, adds to the strategy of whether or not to load up on medicinal items, keys and artifacts for the next puzzle room, leaving you incredibly vulnerable to an attack, or just keeping yourself armed to the teeth to dispose of the next undead creature who decides that you're a running all you can eat buffet. Annoyingly, the canteen of petroleum takes up a slot and can only be used twice before requiring a refill, so that makes the pant-messing crimson head zombies that you've created even more of an annoyance given the fact that I opted to leave my flammable flask tucked away in the last safe box that I hooked up with.

In addition to the sound and lighting, the old camera angles make for an increased fright where upon entering a room you're left with hardly any view and just the moans and groans of a zombie aware of your presence but leaving you completely in the dark as to where he is. Make a move forward and find he's in your face, or opt for aiming your gun from your entry position and wait forever only to find that he's further on down the corridor and is infact completely unaware of your presence. I opted for the latter

Maybe it was nostalgia that gave this a 9, but overally for the low pricetag, classic survival horror experience and decent replay value with another character I'm hoping that this remaster has done well enough to justify a release of my personal favourite, Resident Evil 2

I think reviewing this game as a REMASTER, and not a REMAKE, is very important.

Don't pay attention to all the bad reviews of this game. Those reviewers are either; ignorant, don't understand game mechanics and how they have evolved over the years, or modern gamers who didn't research before they impulse purchased based off the RE name.

This series took a huge turn from RE3 and RE4. Alot of gamers nowadays were too young to buy games before RE4 or weren't even born yet. The key issue with this game and it's bad reviews is that it is a game from the 1990's. There is a difference between aged games vs modern games. We all are reviewing a remaster of a PS1 game, not a remake... There is a MASSIVE difference.

This game started the survival horror genre and literally coined the term, "survival horror" The resource management, trapped, need to get out alive, zombies and jump scares around every corner type of game that was new at the time, very different and very cool. The game features a 3D engine with static backgrounds, and fixed camera angles. It was probably the only way to do close quarters indoors video games at the time. You never knew what was lurking around every corner, besides impending death. The mechanic wasn't perfect. Yes, it kinda of sucked, but it was new and different, and being one of the first 3d games, we didn't have anything modern at the time to compare it to really, so we dealt with it and had a blast. Later PS1 games, allowed the use of a rotating camera to navigate the environment. Games of this time period also introduced new cinematic elements and CG movies and cutscenes which told a story unlike any games before them. RE was one of the first, it's development began in 1993 and was released in 1996.

The game has a few things going for it that are extremely annoying. The camera angles, the small inventory, and backtracking because of said small inventory. But I can't rate these faults badly, because this isnt meant to be a new modern game. This isn't a remake(if it was they could redo the camera angle similar to RE4-6)
It is a remaster of a old 1990's PS1 game, with these features, which were innovative and different and welcome in 1996. To understand this, you had to be old enough to appreciate this period of time, when we evolved from cartridges to cdrom games. It was a very cool time to be a gamer, and many things changed and were different in games. All new styles and game mechanics were welcome, as we all bought new systems, and discs for the first time. I remember i worked at KMart and put a PS1 and Final Fantasy VII on layaway. Playing these new discs on our new playstation was amazing, with 3d graphics, story, via gameplay and movie cutscenes. At the time, all these faults with the game weren't faults, but new and improved features which were awesome and new. Thats why the PS1 version of the game gets such high reviews.

Ok, getting past all that and speaking about this remaster of a 1996 game in 2015. The graphics have been updated. They are better then any PS1 game, yet, nothing like todays standards. Again, PS1 players will appreciate this. The mansion and environments have been changed slightly.. Depending on the person, this is annoying or awesome. I think it's awesome. Some players wish the mansion was an exact replica but I actually love the small changes made to the environment and locations, it makes it a little bit different for the fans who have the mansion in their photographic memory.
New puzzles as well, make the game sort of "new" for us.

If your a modern player, who never played PS1. Search gameplay video, and see if it would interest you. Every sucker who has buyers remorse should of done this as alot of younger or newer players who didn't play the original are rating the camera very bad.

The game wasn't perfect in 1996, and it's not now... It's not trying to modernize anything and doesn't need to. It's a prettied up PS1 game and a very good REMASTER. PS1 gaming nostalgia at it's best... I wish Sony or the original publishers would do this for more PS1 and PS2 games.. I know I'm in the minority when it comes to remasters, but I would love to own all the old classics with a fresh coat of paint. :)
Remember,. this is a remaster of an old game, not a remake. Rate it as such, not a modern game

The mansion is back and better than ever - with a gripping atmosphere and genius gameplay, the hordes of horrifying enemies will take you right back to the very beginning of one of video gaming's greatest titles ever! At long last, we have a title that delivers a refreshed and rebooted version of the original Resident Evil experience, and gives those fans that missed out on the Gamecube version a chance to play a truly fantastic remake...hooray!

It's taken Capcom over a decade to release a game worthy of such a legendary title, with fans of the franchise becoming increasingly frustrated with the developer after more recent releases, like 'Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City' - 2012's awful attempt at a multiplayer shoot em' up - bombed spectacularly with critics and fans alike. Moving away from the survival horror genre, or indeed trying to change that genre themselves, has never been a popular move with R.E fans. Resident Evil HD Remaster proves beyond any reasonable doubt that this is the way fans want to play survival horror games, and the success of it's release is the perfect platform for Capcom to go on and finally give everyone a next-gen Resident Evil 2 and 3. R.E. Remaster HD is the perfect remake of the PS1 original, with the perfect balance of additional content to keep old players on their toes - yet give new players that same terrifyingly addictive experience we all shared back in the 90s.

The first thing anyone carefully treading through the Dining Room in the opening playable sequence will notice is just how good this game looks. The detail really is spectacular, with the atmosphere incredibly sharp. Candles flicker, flashes of lightning illuminate the Main Hall, and bellowing thunder echoes around the dusty corridors, giving you an intensely palpable feeling of not knowing what is around the next corner - and making you furiously question your decision to put the Shotgun back in the crate! The game will keep you uncomfortable and rightly cautious throughout, using some great new touches on the enemies to give the Mansion a creepier and jumpier feeling than ever, with Crimson Head encounters being one of the more notable ones...you'll see what I mean! Ammo and health are always high on your list of priorities, but often are too low in actual numbers - causing you to ration your rounds, check every room thoroughly (finding a sneaky handgun clip or a green herb on an R.E. game really is a unique feeling of jubilation), and to say 'Hi' to every dead body, exactly as the classic Resident Evil titles used to demand from the player.

This really is a bargain at £15/$20 - I encourage anyone who is a fan of the original PS1 Resident Evil titles to purchase this immediately, as well as those who were too young at the time or just never experienced the fantastic amounts of fun a room of 3 or 4 of you and your friends can have solving cryptic puzzles and being chased by ferocious undead dogs. As a solo player - it really is hair-raisingly scary to sit and play through alone, even after similarly themed titles in more recent times,'The Last of Us' or Shinji Mikami's 'Evil Within' being two prominent examples, have shown us what next-gen survival horror games can deliver in terms of jumps, gore and the constant fear of death. The fact that (unless you have recently saved the game) you could potentially lose an hour or two of zombie dodging and lots of progress just by taking the wrong turn into an enemies open jaws, really does add to the overall suspense.

I have been an avid fan of the series since I was 9 or 10, and will continue to play the classic titles whenever I feel compelled to. Shinji Mikami has been quoted as saying that Capcom would have considered a remake of Resident Evil 2 or 3 already, had the GameCube remake of Resident Evil been more successful back in 2002. While this is a deeply flawed logic to have (surely making the REmake exclusive to GameCube would have hugely reduced their audience - considering the vast majority of PS1 owners who loved the R.E. series would then have moved onto PS2, not GamCube, thus missing out entirely), the Remaster HD release is not only a brilliant standalone game, but can hopefully pave the way for Capcom to give us the next two chronological canon titles on our next-gen consoles.

It is rare for a remake to ever surpass the original version, be it in games, films or music, There certainly are aspects of the origninal RE which, as a total fanboy, I'll always prefer. However, due to how restricted and primitive the PS1 was compared to the the consoles that succeeded, there was so much that could be improved upon.

This really is the perfect remake and I hope it serves as an icon for future developers, R.E. or not, when they consider tampering with a genuine classic. Now, it's time to go and shoot some zombies...using my ammo conservatively of course. JD

    Enter the survival horror.

    By Mighty-Lu-Bu May 11, 2015

When I first got a PlayStation in 1998, the first game that I ever played was Resident Evil 2. I loved Resident Evil 2 and after beating it several times, I begged my mom to buy me the Resident Evil Director’s cut, which was just as great as its successor. Even though the original was an amazing game in its own right, it was plagued with the same cheesy dialogue that you would find in an 80’s B action flick. However, despite its flaws, it had a certain charm to it and let’s not forget the fear that it provoked- I would fail a polygraph on the spot if I said that I never woke up in the middle of the night screaming. To gamers, Resident Evil was the pioneer of the Survival Horror genre in video games and although many have tried to mimic its success, most have failed in the process. In 2002, Capcom had an exclusive deal with Nintendo where they made the Resident Evil prequel known as Resident Evil 0 and a full blown remake of the original Resident Evil on the Nintendo GameCube. The GameCube was a strange system because it was the least popular system out of Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation 2 which meant that the number of people who got to play the Resident Evil Remake were severely less than those who played the original. The game was praised by critics, but unfortunately it was a commercial flop which ensured that Capcom would not be making an additional remake anytime soon. However, some 13 years later, the remake has gotten the HD treatment and I immediately snatched it up for PS4. The story is pretty simple: You are a part of an elite police team investigating murders in the forested outskirts of a Midwestern town known as Raccoon City. Things end up going horribly wrong and you take refuge in a mansion where you fight your way through hordes of zombies and other grotesque creatures, while solving puzzles and attempting to figure out just what the hell is happening. The game itself does not look like a 13 year old game by any means and with the fresh coat of HD paint the game looks really good. Sure there are some blurry textures here and there, but that is to be expected. The character models are probably the most improved aspect in terms of graphics here, yet only two CGI movies which include the opening and ending are rendered in HD which is a little puzzling to say the least. In addition to the graphics, the controls have also somewhat improved which is a solid step in the right direction for a series that has been plagued with awkward controls. The game remains as scary as ever with some of the creepiest environments in gaming history. Fixed camera angles only add to the horror because you hear your enemy before you actually see them: the shuffling and groaning sounds of a hungry zombie at the end of a dimly lit hallway can be ultimately nerve wrecking. Fans of the survival horror genre will definitely want to pick this up and on your first play though it will take you roughly 8 to 10 hours to complete. However, with two unique scenarios, an abundant amount of trophies to unlock, hidden weapons to unlock and plenty of game modes to keep you coming back for more horror, you will undoubtedly be spending a lot of time in the world of survival horror.

    Verdict

The Resident Evil remake drastically improves upon the original game in every aspect. The voice acting is much better and the graphics are a full quantum leap ahead of the original, but the core gameplay and story line are still very much intact which is a good thing. Fans of the originally will notice that the new and improved mansion has a very similar layout to the original, however, it has also changed enough where it is also entirely different, managing to mix things up just enough to prevent veterans on breezing through the game. As it stands, this version of Resident Evil is not only best version you can play, but it is probably one of the greatest remakes of all time.

Great game with a lot of fun interactive gameplay. Really gets you involved with the character, when you have to be very careful while playing. As for me it was my first time playing it, I enjoyed it alot better then some later resident evil games.

This remake clearly comes from an age in gaming that was underdeveloped and almost completely lacking in horror titles. Resident Evil revolutionized horror games for sure, but it isn't without its own problems. Poor aiming, bad dialogue, and a horrible camera can't be forgiven just because it is an old game. There are also many instances of low quality texturing, which have no place in an HD remaster.

The game is fundamentally different than the newer games (4-6), but that isn't a bad thing. For example, combat is much harder and more involved in RE4, however in this remake survival is all about item management and planning ahead. This aspect of gameplay was very enjoyable. Exploring a creepy environment, solving puzzles, item management, and solving the mystery of the Spencer mansion was a great time. The fundamental gameplay design has aged extremely well; however, in practice many game mechanics like the ones I mentioned before have not. I would have liked to see a remake that addressed these issues. Regardless, its an excellent game. 8/10

As an aside, I would like to point out that the people who put these old horror games on a pedestal and give the new ones crap are generally wrong. This game did not scare me any more than RE4, Evil Within, or any other modern horror title. I did not play this game on original release, so I have no nostalgia or bias towards it. The only fundamental difference in the two styles of gameplay is item management and puzzle frequency. If you want real horror, play P.T. or Amnesia: TDD.

The game is a constant puzzle with an increasing difficulty in enemies which you can kill with the minimal ammunition you are given or there is the option to leg it, 'Survival' being the key word.
You can play through the game as Jill or Chris with individual differences to each character, the dialogue is still hilariously cheesy just like the original but I love it and so will you. One of the best games currently available on the PS4

Even after all these years and times I have played these resident evil games I still feel tense and even make the odd involuntary sound now and then, I have opted to use the original controls for my play through as this feels more like a resident evil game to me these controls work just as good/poorly as they always have but the new control scheme didn't quite do it for me made it too easy to turn and run from a zombie. Watching your character react as they back away from the undead just adds to the atmosphere, speaking of which the atmosphere is still there helped by the new shadow systems and sound quality, unfortunately the static images for the rooms/environments etc have not really aged well, they seem worse in the auqa ring and beyond but the overall quality of everything else just about compensates for that.

One other thing that annoys me is the inventory screen, it is still in the 4:3 so when you open the inventory you get thick black lines down the right and left side of the screen, not game breaking but disappointing, I just wish they would do the same for resident evil 2 and 3 could you imagine Dr William Birkin and The Nemesis I have been waiting since playing the G.C. version of this game all them years ago

The original Resident Evil released back in 1996 is still one of the scariest survival horror games I have played to date. The impact it gave us through its dark atmosphere of the mansion is unforgettable. A successful remake was later released in 2002 on the GameCube and added new areas such as the grave yard and additional sub-stories.

After 13 years since the remake, Resident Evil is back and prettier than ever with an HD re-mastered version.

The story talks about members of Racoon City’s special Units S.T.A.R.S heading into the mountains to discover the mystery behind the repeated reports of murders in the area. Their helicopter loses contact with everyone and they are now left all alone in the middle of nowhere. The team is in shock after they are attacked by mutated dogs that chase them all the way to an eerie old mansion.

Revisiting the old mansion brought a lot of good memories. At the beginning of the game, you are given an option to choose between Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. Each has their own weakness and the story will play out a bit different deepening on who you choose.

The remakes visuals were impressive back in 2002; however, the up scaled HD makeover is lovely with 1080P and a wide screen option.

The shadows and lightning effect adds to the creepiness of the mansion and every room and corridor is filled with great detail that sets the mood perfectly. The atmosphere is rich, giving you the feeling that you are never alone. Resident Evil HD is a tough game where you need to think about every step you take. The game is well balanced with horror and many puzzles that are intense and offer a lot of variety. Solving the challenging puzzles felt rewarding.

Patience is key because you will have to do a lot of backtracking to solve some puzzles and look for a specific item. There are a couple of powerful weapons at your disposal and my favorite was the shotgun but aiming is not very easy and it will need time to get used too.

Ammunition is limited and should be used only when necessary. Item management has always played a major role in the old Resident Evil games. You will be able to carry up to 6 or 8 items depending on which character you chose. Knowing what to carry is vital. Will you carry that herd? Or will you leave it behind hoping to find ammo along the way? You will have to choose wisely.

The Zombies look terrifying and move around slowly in a realistic manner. They are tough and might come back even after you kill them. So it is always safer to burn them with your kerosene and lighter or by shooting them in the head. Others will mutate into a much faster zombie called Crismson and the bosses are unique with each one requiring a different strategy to defeat it.

The sound effects are impressive and the moans of the zombies and thunder sounds give you chills. The camera angels are fixed in a way that adds a lot of tension and the only place you will feel a sigh of relief is when you are next to a printer to save your game.

The old controls are still an option for diehard fans, who want to experience it in its original form, but I preferred using the new control option; however, you can only shoot forward, up or down and the control messes up sometimes.

There is a lot of reply value with multiple story paths to take and unlocking all the extras is worth it. For the people who played the GameCube version then this is basically the same game with crispier graphics and for the people who only played the original back in 1996, then you will notice a lot of differences. This game is more challenging and longer.

Resident Evil HD is the best version to enjoy the classic game

The mansion is designed beautifully with the architecture - each painting unique, flooring detailed, walls eloquent, room layouts creative - and there are shortcuts for one to understand how interconnected the floors are in a manner resembling Dark Souls 1: West Wing, East Wing, Balcony, Main Hall, Basement, Attic, Back of Mansion, Courtyard (Back of Mansion West), Forest (Back of Mansion East), Tunnels (Back of Mansion Basement), Laboratory (Basement 2). No room is repetitive, each atmospherically crafted with a Gothic theme and splendid in artistic direction.

The monsters each have a rationales to not simply be a 'random creature', and the world is full of backstories, whether it's the justification of the insane traps/designs or how the a certain creature is immortal, to engross the player into the collective details of an interactive world (through knowledge), special. Dialogue and characters are campy as with any classic B-movie, cheesy but amusing, with no absurdities to the plot or characterization, endearment an inevitability!

Nevertheless,What can you say, or perhaps not say, about a franchise that is knocking on the door of its third decade, whose most recent entries collapse under the weight of a polished remaster of its first entry? Resident Evil has become so bloated in its sequels and spin offs, all of them underwhelming, that revisiting Spencer Mansion for the third time is sadly a breath of fresh air. Nevertheless, it is a welcomed breath of fresh air as we now have the best Resident Evil in some years. Leave it to a polished up version of a 2002 Gamecube release, which in itself was a remake of the original 1996 release of Resident Evil's starting point, to put smiles on the faces of all the devoted old school fans who have wanted the series to return to its terrifying albeit cheesy and clunky roots. Capcom achieves greatness with making the arguably best even better by tidying up the controls, graphics, textures and sound, and letting it live and breath on current generation consoles. Those who only know modern Resident Evil, or never got to play this in 2002 entry have themselves a fantastic experience ahead of them as they explore Spencer Mansion and witness the groundbreaking horror first hand with the original core characters. This game doubles as a grocery list of what Survival Horror should be, and how the modern conveniences of gaming do not always make for the best experience. This take on Resident Evil is both familiar and curious, both comfortable and nerve racking, and both full of nostalgia and yet as challenging as a never before seen adventure. So those of you who have played the original '96 game, are still in for surprises around some corners, and challenges that will make resources vital. The dialogue, though still a bit cheesy, is multiple levels up from that of the delightfully awkward original script. It remains similar enough to bring back all the memories of the original, but separates itself enough from the past to intrigue, creating an almost parallel world experience with how similar but more thought out the new dialogue is. I found myself both listening to the new, but in my head quoting the old, making for some laughs. Once again, those first person views of doors opening, tight corridors with the moaning undead near by, and limping through halls praying for ammo and health all have your hair on end, and it is a most welcome return. The Mansion is only slightly redesigned enough to make you lull into comfort, thinking you have the situation under control before springing something new on you such as a new zombie placement, or unfamiliar room, or retelling an old experience in less predictably ways. The results are fun and frightening. The Mansion is alive with creaks and shutters, moving light and flashes of lighting, shadows and mirrors, fog and water, all pulling you in deeper than ever before. This is Resident Evil in all its Survival Horror glory. It would be impossible to rate this any lower than a perfect score, seeing as it is a better version of a past masterpiece, and then improved once again on top of that. Get lost in Spencer Mansion, and take a bloody bite out of the game that started it all, the one and only, Resident Evil. Expand

Supplies were scarce as they struggled to stay alive.

As a person who never played any of the Resident Evil games before 4, I was curious to see if Resident Evil was as good as its reputation preceded it. I can personally confirm that after all these years, the gameplay and style of the original RE still holds up and only furthers my love for the series.

If you've played Resident Evil on the GameCube or the original on the PlayStation, you know how the game works. The "tank" controls basically mean pushing up on the left stick will move the character in the direction they're facing rather than from your perspective. Also, there are no camera controls due to every camera angle having a fixed perspective. Combat itself is not really hectic as you rarely face more than one zombie at a time. The average zombie may be slow, but the tight corridors, stiff controls and the fact that your firing stance roots you to the spot all help to make killing zombies challenging. However, in Resident Evil, saving your resources and managing your inventory carefully is what's most important, so often running away from zombies or taking them out with little resources used as possible is the better choice and the greater challenge. This gameplay offers a nice change of pace in a gaming market currently saturated with high adrenaline shooters.

I also loved the differences between Chris and Jill in terms of gameplay. Each character has different traits that makes both of their playthroughs feel different, even if the puzzles for the mansion's layout are still exactly the same. With different inventory sizes, hit points, weapons, and abilities, Chris and Jill both feel different without taking away any important core abilities. Because of this, there is no definitively weaker character, but instead two different characters. As for which plays better, that's simply a matter of preference, which I love.

As for the mansion, despite the major amount of backtracking, the different variety and layouts of enemies kept things interesting, and the feeling of the mansion being one giant puzzle kept me going, and it was satisfying to figure the puzzles out for myself. Despite the relatively slow pace, I had a blast going through the Spencer Mansion. Plus, even after you finish the story, there's tons of replay value, including two different characters with both having a multitude of endings, different modes, weapons and costumes. There's a ton to unlock that'll keep you playing for a while, but even if those aren't your thing, one playthrough is enough to satisfy the purchase.

With this remaster, Capcom took the progressive root and decided to give you the option of choosing between the old controls of the previous game or using the new alternative controls, where movement is based on the camera's perspective rather than the camera. Although good for new players, I personally have never had a problem with tank controls, so I just stuck with the game's original control scheme.

As for the graphics, the game looks great during gameplay. While upgrading the character models and backgrounds, the remaster still retains the graphical style of the originals, with a video game character walking across what looks like a photo as a backdrop. Gameplay visuals look great, but I can't say the same for the cinematic cutscenes. Though some detail has been added, most of the cutscenes still look blurry, and there are a few that obviously haven't been touched.

Unfortunately, that's not the only thing that seemed to be left unattended. While not as bad the original Resident Evil, the voice acting in this game still isn't very good. While some are passable, others (especially Jill) are particularly bad and make the game feel less immersive. It makes me wish they'd gotten the current voice actors of the characters to voice the lines, considering the current actors of Jill, Chris, Wesker, and Barry all put in good performances. It also doesn't help the game's sub-par story. All of the twists and turns are painfully obvious, and the bad voice acting with the pretty laughable dialogue accompanying it don't make it any more believable or engaging.

There's also some small improvements I wish they would've made, like the ability to discard or swap items out of your inventory like in future Resident Evil games, but it hasn't been added. Plus, I was hoping for more diversity in the story or puzzles when playing as Chris and Jill, but instead their playthroughs remain largely the same.

Ultimately though, none of the flaws here are big enough to take away from the game's fantastic re-release. The new improvements are welcome and the game looks fantastic. I'm also happy that the gameplay still holds up to this day, nearly twenty years after it's original release. For fans who miss the old Resident Evil style, this game may just have enough to incetivise you to come back. As for newcomers, the remaster is accessible enough for new fans of the franchise to play this game as well.

Resident Evil is not a game for the fast paced gotta have it now gamer; This is a game you immerse yourself in, taking in the sights and sounds of its creepy atmosphere. RE:HD is a slow paced resource management adventure game with clever puzzles that make you feel good about yourself and once they are completed they unlock new discovery's. The universe has rich lore that is uncovered as you explore, and it's story is told mostly through findings of short notes that create mental pictures in your head, great game for those with vivid imaginations. The game is not truly scary, but more dark toned with a feeling of conspiracy and mystery... a different kind of scary.

I truly recommend this game to anyone looking for a different experience than one that is currently being offered.

Pros: Great atmosphere, Cool enemies ( one of the most iconic representations of zombies in a game ) feeling of reward when you move forward. Great resource management game.

Cons: This game is not for everyone

Resident Evil Remake, or simply REmake, is an absolute masterpiece and a modern gaming classic. Almost fourteen years later ( thirteen when the remaster came out) and this game hasn't aged a bit. Even the Gamecube original is perfectly playable if you still have a CRTV left.

From a gameplay perspective the game is tense and challenging, yet always fair. It is the prefect example that "dated" design choices and making the right compromises, like taking away the camera control and item limits, can offer a better gameplay experience.

The graphics are clean and the pre-rendered backgrounds are beautifully designed. The sound design and soundtrack are the best of the series.

The game also has plenty of replay value. You can unlock higher difficulties, new modes, costumes and secret weapons. Even after unlocking everything the game has to offer, you can still play the game over and over again trying to beat the game as fast as you can.

REmake is not only the best Resident Evil ever and the best remake ever (FF VII: Remake still hasn't come out yet at the time of writing this), it also stands as a testament that old can be gold and not "bad", "archaic" and "dated".

    Note:

Gamers who cannot adapt to the classic "Tank"-controls can switch to modern controls.

The Remaster has a couple of songs that are slightly altered. It's not a deal breaker, but I must admit that I prefer the original tracks.

Some of the backgrounds did not get the full remaster treatment. Not a big deal, but it can look ever so slightly stretched out.

I'll keep it brief for those wondering If this is really worth it.

Gameplay - We're obviously past the whole thing of fixed cameras the gameplay of RE Remaster is lacking big time especially when you compare it to many of the other big games of today, basically RE gameplay is that of run past enemies or choose to shoot them and I've got to say the gun play in this game is awful there is such little control of it what you have to do is face a certain way point your gun out in that direction and shoot, there is literally no aiming whatsoever! How can this be acceptable!?
Another thing to note is the fixed cameras this plays into why you see no proper aiming in the game, so your cameras are just basically fixed points some say that this adds to atmosphere and I mean that's up for debate, maybe it does, but If you need a zombie to be hidden whilst knowing its infront of you to be scared how scary is that really?
Take a look at Dead Space that's how you do proper gameplay with proper atmospheric elements they don't need to hide things off screen to try and scare you with cheap jump scares.
The puzzles however are great, they really do get you thinking that is the one redeeming factor about the gameplay.

Graphics - They've done well with the graphics, obviously whilst I pointed out the negatives of fixed cameras I will also admit that they can also make a game look very good at the expense of ruining gameplay, albeit I'm not saying fixed cameras wouldn't work for a hack and slash sort of game its just obvious RE is not that.

Music/Soundtrack - RE have always done a fantastic job with chilling music in the background and that remains the same in this game, I truly do believe that their soundtrack is probably the best part about this game along with the puzzles those are the reason I didn't score it lower than 4.

So, lastly, this game costs around £16 on steam... you could get countless other games which offer better re-playability some offering multiplayer some offering better graphics and better story telling examples are as follows just so you don't think I'm BSing you -

Buy The Deus Ex Collection BUNDLE - £8
    Tomb Raider - £15
    Just Cause 3 £2.69

And then there is more, so its hard to recommend anyone actually getting this unless you were one of those who played it back in the day of the PS1, but even then I'd say I didn't enjoy the game like I did back then because the standards right now are abundantly much more higher and RE-Remaster failed to impress.

The mansion is different, there are new rooms, new puzzles. There are some similarities, but overall it's a different game... and it sucks at being a "new" game. Specially considering that's for PS4.

Through my rose-tinted glasses the original was an amazing game, but this shattered any of those illusions that still remained.

Even without the 'tank' control system it still does not handle well due to the ever shifting camera angles. The action is shoddy with fighting being a hit-and-miss affair where headshots are just pure luck, rather than the reward for a good aim. The small inventory and the incessant backtracking just made the game a chore for me to play, and the less said about the so-called puzzles the better. Overall, as you can probably tell, I did not enjoy the time I spent on this game.

I liked the graphical update, even though the cutscenes seem out of place as clearly less could be done to improve them for the HD era, but thats about it.

After the pinnacle of the series that is Resi 4, stepping back into the Spencer mansion has had no appeal for me. Not only that but doing so has made me misty-eyed for the days I remembered this game as a masterpiece.

Have I been spoiled by more modern games with their shiny visuals, instant gratification and drip-fed rewards? Yes, probably. But it shows to me that gaming, not just as a storytelling medium, but overall, has long since moved on from this awkward slice of nostalgia.

Some games, it would seem, should just stay in the past.

I find myself constantly doing 180 turns as the camera changes and walking the wrong way, then the right way. Perhaps through endless RPG playing (thanks Bethesda!) but I really really struggle to adapt to this camera. After 5 hours in RE:HD, I'm about done.

For a RE fan, I'd still recommend this remake, and if your PS+, do download and give some respect to the title at least.
Unfortunately, it just isn't a game I can enjoy, and that's what I look for over graphics or anything else, a memorable experience that's full on fun. I enjoyed a few good scenes (new cut scenes are good!), it made me jump a number of times, but overall, i really struggled with the camera which ruined the experience for me. If you're not as simple / conditioned as me, and can get used to set cameras, then you'll probably love this game. I think I'd have loved it had they added the option of FP view, or 3rd person over the shoulder ... but this, just frustrated my old brain.

I don't care about nostalgia or anything, but the camera angle changes every few steps you take making you lose all sense of direction and taking too much time moving the control sticks to make you go straight. This is the most unfortunate piece, because I love the overall feel of the game. It is kinda like Luigi's Mansion, which is a game I have played a lot. Another thing that I hate is that your inventory is so small, and that wouldn't be bad but you can't even drop items. On top of that, if my inventory is full and I want to use a healing item, too bad because I need space just to pick it up and use it right away. Also you only can save at certain points and need special items to save. Sometimes the points at which you can save have an item on top of them, so if you can't pick the item up you can't save either. This game is literally unplayable which sucks because even though I got it for free, it is still a horrible game. Don't listen to other reviews, they are blinded by nostalgia. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Up until the last 5 minutes of this game, I would was ready to give it a 8 out of 10. I really was, but when I got the ending of this game IT WAS GONE.

If you've ever beaten the original RE, you'd know 5 things happen: a countdown appears announcing the mansion is going to blow up, the Tyrant re-appears as you're waiting for the helicopter, eventually Brad throws you a Rocket Launcher when you're battling the Tyrant, then as you're flying away after beating the Tyrant again the mansion blows up.

In this Ps4 remaster, NONE of those things happen. The Tyrant kills Wesker, you kill the Tyrant, and then he just....never re-appears. you go to the helipad, and that's the end of the game!! You don't even get to see the mansion blow up!

Maybe it's because I beat the game on "normal"? That's **** up if that's what it is! With many video games, if you beat it on the hardest difficulty, you get the "best" ending. But it would apparently seem that with this RE HD Remake, you gotta beat it on hard just to get AN ending,

The downside to this game is when I compared it to RE2...

There was WAAY too much backtracking. (it was excessively done) due to 6 slot inventory system which becomes tiresome when every new area you discover...you realise your gonna have to run back.

My other negative is the multiple ending attempt... its GARBAGE. Unless you enjoy playing a game and cheating + Walkthrough... you aren't going to see the REAL ending... this is HORRIBLE! IT DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF PLAYING THIS KIND OF GAME, YOUR FORCED TO KILL ANY SURPRISE BY USING A WALKTHROUGH IN ORDER TO REACH THE DESIRED ENDING.

This game is real survival horror at its best. I cannot find one thing that I didn't like. Maybe only they should make different scenarios for both characters instead same in both playthrough. Fixed camera angles should return to games in future

Expand

The most faithful AND masterful remake, ever.
The one that started the boom of recreating older classics with the latest tech.
The pinnacle of the true survival-horror genre.
An absolutely addicting, fun game, with stellar visuals and audio-design.
TONS of replay-value, and believe me - you will want to revisit the Spencer mansion, over and over again!

Very good game and very playable even for todays standards, but not perfect.

It's very atmospheric and has nice little puzzles. The background graphic is in very fuzzy 2D and the angles are set, making it rather uncomfortable to navigate. Story and NPC interaction is very thin, but some side stories (in journals) are quite moving. I recommend getting mods like the reupscale project

I recommend getting mods like the reupscale project and the door mod. (doors are otherwise really painful). I also did not like the limited save and limited cantine to burn zombies so I got a cheat script to fix that.

It's starts quite thrilling, but it's a bit of a let down against the end. Was a fun journey all together, must have been a real thrill to play in 1996.

Resident evil is a game that shows it age. Whether it be through it's clunky controls or dialogue it reminds you often its core is 24 years old and yet it manages to rise above the clunk for the most part thanks to it's great design. RE is a survival horror through and through with resource management being incredibly important throughout, whether it be the ammo of your weapons to defend you from the monsters that dwell in the mansion, or just what items you bring with you in your puny 6 item slots. One frustration for me was that there was no way to discard a item without using it which would lead to me having to backtrack to a supply box to store something and then run back to finally pick up the key item. If your new this will happen constantly throughout the game and annoyed to no end by the conclusion. The combat is functional and allows you to take on the great ensemble of monsters in a satisfying but limiting way. There are also plenty of fun puzzles that within the game that hit the sweet spot of being challenging but not overly frustrating. The mystery and intrigue of what has taken place in this mansion is palpable as you are fed bread crumbs at every turn in true horror fashion. The game isn't particularly scary but there is real tension as you explore the mansion not knowing what awaits you around the corner and it is ever present, as areas evolve throughout the game so even areas you know may not be the same. The games environmental design is where it shines though, as every room is distinct to each other even if it doesn't appear that way at the start, by the end you will know this place like your own home and its impeccable design makes the backtracking and opening of new areas all the more fulfilling. The story is good but the janky acting gives it a bit more goof than would be ideal for my preference, but the cheesiness might captivate you. The 2 playthrough have tweaks like different side characters and small changes in how the plot unfolds but in general are very similar. When it's all said and done Re falls just short of being an all time classic but it's importance to the survival horror genre cannot be understated.

The only bad things, in my opinion, are the cameras, tank controls and the whole inventory system. It makes for a tense experience, but

Resident Evil HD was a thrill to play. The graphics were gorgeous. The gameplay took a little getting used to, but once I got passed it, it made the experience the more frightening. Though, at times, it seemed to be overly complicated, with a whole lot of backtracking, it was still a satisfying experience, especially after completion.

It's cool to see the roots of the series and preparing for a dash across the mansion can be very fun. Overall, I think this game requires a lot of patience. I finished the game on Mountain Climbing difficult, but I found most of the difficulty came from overlooking a key. This would be fine if the narrative was interesting enough to tie it all together, but it too is date. I LOVE THE RE3 REMAKE. If REmake is how all the old games play, I'm glad that style is gone and some fans are clinging to their childhood. Expand

While the original 1996 version was an amazing game, and my first foray into the Survival Horror Genre, this game is far superior in many ways. The graphics are much better, and still hold up to this day considering this is a 2002 Gamecube Port. Of course graphics have gotten a lot better than this since, but unlike the original it does hold up greatly. The gameplay is a lot better than the original, and just as frustrating but in that good kind of way if you know what I mean.

The story is expanded upon and more things are added it while keeping most of the original work, although it does change up quite a few things which is nice because you expect something to happen because it did in the original game but instead something entirely different takes place, keeping it new and fresh for us longtime fans.

The soundtrack is amazing from music to ambience. There's nothing like running down a dark hallway after being scared out of your mind from a zombie to jumping at the sound of thunder in the distance. There are a few new enemies to contend with, as well as all the original ones. The Crimson Heads are quite intense, which reminds me make sure to burn all the zombie corpses in places that you will frequent often (you can thank me later).

The game still has that B Horror quality about it, but sadly the original did a much better job in that department. While this one still has that feel, the acting isn't as bad which is what made the original so loveable. Now don't get me wrong the acting in this game isn't Academy Award Winning and at many times is pretty bad, it just doesn't have that original feel.

All in all this was a great experience and it was fun to jump back into the world that opened my eyes to horror gaming. If you're fan of the original or a newcomer this is an amazing game for you to explore. However, I do recommend playing the original (if you haven't already). I will be playing this game again very soon. I have only done the Jill storyline, but I am sure the Chris story is just as engaging.

I played this on the PS4.

What is it?: Resident Evil is a video game series that began during the old days of the PS1 with the original game titled Resident Evil. It's the game that many would say really kickstarted the idea of Survival Horror games and oh boy is it terrifying, for back then anyways. In today's standards, the og game may make you shiver today, but this HD Remaster will make you not want to sleep with the lights off tonight. You start off the game by choosing either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield who are part of S.T.A.R.S., a highly skilled team of individuals who take on different tasks that involve anything out of police hands in Raccoon City. Jill and Chris' team get stranded in the woods of the Arklay Mountains after trying to search and rescue their Bravo team. Instead of encountering Bravo Team, they find out that woods are infested with monsters and had to hide out in the iconic Spencer Mansion. From there, Jill and Chris have to complete puzzles, find their teammates, and fight their way through zombies and monsters.

The good: The game can be quite difficult to understand all the puzzles, which leaves the player to really think of what to do, or look up a guide every now and then like me, to get through the mansion. Controls are tank controls, meaning that using the D-Pad on your PS4 is the more optimal choice for moving around, and at first, I didn't like these controls. However, after doing some time with the game, I came to like the controls and angled camera views. The game also provides a lot of weapons to combat enemies like shotguns, rifles, bazooka, grenade launcher, etc. so that's fun. The enemies in this game can really make you jump, especially the giant spiders and their sound effects which just makes me want to curl up in a ball. The lore in this game is also quite nice and does give you an image of what the hell happened in the mansion and who is somewhat responsible for this nightmare.

The bad: Honestly, I personally don't have a problem with the game. But, if I had to put one here it would be the fact that the game doesn't have a lot of replay value. I mean yeah you can go through the whole game again on a higher difficulty, however, not everyone will probably want to do that. Also, costumes while cool could have been replaced with something else to make the game stand out more.

Final Thoughts: Resident Evil HD is a great game for anyone who wants to get started in horror games. The puzzles are fun, the soundtrack intimidates the player, the monsters feel like the stuff of nightmares, and the graphics are just great to look at. As long as you have the light on, you shouldn't be too scared to enjoy this game.
