Rocket League may only feel like a glorified minigame, but its wild, tense, and fast-paced gameplay makes it one of PS4’s best multiplayer experiences to date.

Rocket League does everything needed to create a kick ass sports game. It's simple enough to learn the mechanics in a few minutes, but also complicated enough to require several hours of play to understand the finer details. Those hours will certainly fly by.

(THIS IS A TEXT VERSION OF NEATMIKE's REVIEW ON YOUTUBE)
After first only watching a friend play the beta for Rocket League, I felt underwhelmed. Now that developer Psyonix has released the full version of Rocket League on Playstation 4 and PC, I have to admit I had the wrong impression. This game is addicting and fun as hell.
Rocket League in its simplest form is soccer with cars. It’s the way that it’s done that makes this game truly special. It’s an addicting combination of simplicity and competition. The player drops into a game size of 1vs1 to up to 4vs4 in one of 11 fully customizable vehicles. An oversized ball is placed in the middle and hell breaks loose as rocket powered cars try to send it in the goal using their bodies as paddles.
Rocket League consists of ranked and unranked online playlists, an offline exhibition mode capable of split screen and bots, as well as a season mode similar to what you’d find in a Madden game. There are currently 4 main stages with 3 weather variants making a total of 7 cosmetically different stages. New stages will most likely be added in the future and Psyonix has stated that they’ll be free. Vehicle customization is also pleasantly deep. Changes can be made to paint, decals, wheels, and even rocket trails. Progression isn’t plagued by complicated challenges; instead the player is rewarded with items for just playing the game.
Rocket League maintains a next-gen appearance with awesome lighting and a cool art style. Everything looks awesome running in 60fps on both PC and PS4. The only framerate drop I encountered was at the start of a match when vehicles were still loading. Despite some day 1 server issues, Rocket League seems very polished. This may partly be due to 2 very successful betas the developer decided to do.
The gameplay is where this game truly shines. There is a lot of satisfaction in knocking around a ball with rocket boosted cars. Controls are on point and everything feels very responsive. Psyonix has previously developed the game Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars, so the gameplay is something we’ve seen before. However, as far as the current generation of consoles, Rocket League stands alone as a competitive mini sports game.
I find myself starting up Rocket League on my Playstation 4 all the time, with how easy it is to drop in and have fun. I did find that searching for an online match sometimes took upwards of 2 minutes. This is something I expect to get better with patches and as time goes on, but it does get tedious when you are looking to jump right in. They do allow you to use the menu and your garage while searching for a match though which is a nice touch.
Another unexpected area of excellence in Rocket League is the soundtrack. The game features an electronic soundtrack by artists Mike Ault and Hollywood Principle that fits perfect.
Rocket League is a great new platform for competitive gaming and offers a ton of fun per dollar. It’s worth its $20 price tag, and if you’re a current subscriber of PlayStation Plus it’s a no brainer being the free game of July.

My only complaint is not being able to pair up with my friend on PC but *fingers crossed* this will be patched. The Devs have been on point and active. Their game is a smash hit, they are getting quite a large server load right now so I expected some downtime and issues. Not a huge hitch because in less than 24 hours they are back up and running smoothly. I've mastered the gameplay and I feel like I'm really playing an online sport for once and not a game made to seem like a sport online. I dig it. Expand

Football with cars, actually it's giant ball with tiny cars. Maybe it sounds stupid but Rocket League is an awesome game. It's very addictive,Football with cars, actually it's giant ball with tiny cars. Maybe it sounds stupid but Rocket League is an awesome game. It's very addictive, I just kept saying one more match, and suddenly it's very late and I got to go to work tomorrow, but just one more match. This game is one of my favorite online games, and I'm not even good in this game. Also there is flag of my country, and I got my first PS4 platinum trophy, yeeey.
Offline isn't very interesting, there is only exhibition and season modes, and bots are kinda stupid, so that is my biggest problem with the game. Also there isn't much variety in stadiums and cars.

Expand

Items that costed 2-3 keys (2-3 dollars) now cost 1200-1500 credits (basically 15 dollars)? It’s utterly ridiculous. I knew Epic Games was a joke that doesn’t care about consumers at all, I just hoped it wouldn’t become this bad on my favorite game. The prices need to be adjusted, that’s a minimum. But Epic knows the prices are ridiculous so they’ll change them after community outrage and then play like they’re the good guy and gain fan favor. If you love video games do not fall for this, Epic know it’s ridiculous, they did it on purpose just to fix it later. Epic have proved again for the 100th time that we are a bottom line, not a human with a heart and soul that got into videogames as a kid because we thought they were fun. The days of coming home from school and getting to play your favorite game without predatory business practices being shoved down your throat are over thanks to EA, Epic, Activision etc. This is the pinnacle of what videogames have become, we are all numbers to them, please boycott Epic games or at least their predatory practices Expand
