When humans get too lonely, they turn into monsters
Sea of Solitude takes you on a personal journey of a young woman's loneliness. Set sail across a beautiful and evolving world, where nothing is quite what it seems. Meet fantastical creatures and monsters, learn their stories, and solve challenges. Explore a flooded city, either by boat, on foot, or by swimming through the water itself. Dare to look what lies beneath the surface, in a haunting struggle of darkness and light, and discover what it truly means to be human.
    KEY FEATURES
    - AN EMOTIONAL JOURNEY Sea of Solitude embarks players on a nuanced and intimate action-adventure, experienced through the mind of Kay, as she struggles to overcome her inner loneliness. Players must help Kay see below the surface and beyond, guiding her through her Sea of Solitude, in this deeply touching tale of darkness and light.
    - A METAPHORICAL WORLD As her journey evolves, Kay's dark and stormy environment begins to transform, with light and color shining into the world. Water levels rise and fall to reflect her own state of mind, transforming the flooded city landscape into new areas for the player to explore, with new challenges to face.
    - FACE THE MONSTERS WITHIN Encounter fantastical creatures, solve puzzles, and rid the world of tainted memories. Meet a variety of beautiful and terrifying monsters, each with their own struggles of loneliness to tell. Through confronting these monsters, Kay will not only learn more about them, but also herself, and what it means to be human.

Sea of Solitude is an atmospheric fairy tale, that handles topics like phobias, conflict and depression in a thoroughly competent way.

Sea of Solitude left an impact on me that I won't soon forget. From its heartbreaking story to it's powerful and striking visuals. Sea of Solitude is another good example of a game bringing awareness to mental health issues.

It's a boat ride worth taking at least once given the gravity of its narrative.

Sailing through the mind of Kay is a very lonely experience. Looking for a solution, you will head into her mind alone, with no real answer to be found. However, playing this game will not just make you feel lonely, since the abstract and ambiguous story will also leave you confused. It’s definitely not a therapeutic experience, but its depiction of loneliness will make you think.

Like gamey meat, it’s not for everyone. Some players may want more to do than run around looking for seagulls and messages in bottles in between story moments and the occasional “fight” sequence. The story (which we have not spoiled here) is likely to resonate with many people, but for some it won’t be enough to overcome a lack of fun gameplay to take players in between exposition. It is a worthy attempt, but just falls a bit short.

So much of the game feels only slightly more cohesive than someone scribbling the word “depression” over, say, a picture of a person being eaten by a shark.

It doesn't overstay its welcome & is one of those rare, truly special games that every gamer (or fan of well-crafted narrative story in general) should experience at least once - not unlike 'What Remains of Edith Finch' - for originality alone. I picked this game up after reading about how it dealt directly with mental health as a main theme - and it certainly does - but the way the game fumbled its way through the topic ended up letting me down. That being said, there are still some 10/10 moments throughout the game in terms of writing and gameplay cohering into compelling (and often frightening) sequences. In terms of art and music design, this game shines beautifully. But I think the game's themes were so overwritten and hamfisted that it spoiled the greatness that the rest of this game has. Expand

I was really rooting for this game to be good, and I can say that it is easily one of the most beautiful games you can play this year. But theI was really rooting for this game to be good, and I can say that it is easily one of the most beautiful games you can play this year. But the god awful writing and inconsistent voice acting really prevents this game from reaching its full potential. Most of the dialogue is very surface level, always stating things plainly and never being very subtle about it. Whatever a character is thinking or feeling, it gets said out loud and there are a ton of needless statements or expositional lines. It is completely devoid of any subtext, and as a result, the emotional impact the game is supposed to have, is significantly reduced. it’s still got a decent story at it's core, but thanks to the terrible writing, it's really poorly told. And when the storytelling fails, you need to have engaging gameplay to make up for it. Unfortunately, much of Sea of Solitude's gameplay is simply following a glowing orb and touching a few buttons. It’s a damn shame, because this concept is great and I can tell this was made by some really passionate folks, but it just desperately, desperately needs better writing. Expand
