This HD version of Secret of Man is a welcome release, especially for those who want to revisit the adventures of the three young protagonists. Newer gamers though may find the overall design to be dated.

I still enjoyed this new package. Secret of Mana was always about charm and personality over polish. Yes, the game remains a bit of a mess, but that special spark at its core burns brighter than ever. If you loved the original game, or are just in the mood for something light and quirky, this remake strikes true.

Secret of Mana is the same adventure that I remember, and I couldn’t have asked for more.

Despite Secret of Mana's technical blunders, this new version is a faithful re-creation with a lot of reverence for its source material. For those who may have missed out on Secret of Mana the first time around, it also serves as a solid introduction to a classic from the Golden Age. At a time when local co-op is difficult to find on most current-gen consoles, it gives a fresh option for those wanting to play with others. Secret of Mana's remaster offers a magical, vivid tale for the current-gen library.

Secret of Mana HD Remaster is a bit of an odd duck. For every one thing it does to enhance the original, it makes a strange, distracting change or doesn’t make an obvious fix. Still, even as I waffled between loving it for its happy colors and lovable cast and feeling frustrated by its fussy AI and uneven difficulty, I always felt a childlike wonder at its relentless charm. Warts and all, this classic RPG remains a treat to pick up and play.

Not the best remake of all time, but a good one in any case. The three player coop it´s one of its best features and its soundtrack (both old and the new re-arranged one) is superb. The new 3D graphics are very averaged, though.

This legendary RPG series returns with a vengeance, thanks to decent graphics and a lot of small improvements. The developers mostly play it safe though, omitting - among other things - online features, which is a shame.

It is still an enjoyable classic RPG, with fun co-op local multiplayer. But somehow we prefer the classic style better than the new generic 3D models.

Secret of Mana is a welcomed remake, but doesn't do what's necessary to bring this game to a modern audience, with only slight changes to the original formula.

Secret of Mana’s remake is fun because Secret of Mana was fun. However, Square could have done a lot better, especially with a beloved classic such as this.

Even if it doesn’t look as good as the original, the Secret of Mana remake is a fun and exciting game. By taking the best of its source material and making some adjustments, Square Enix brings us the most accessible version of the beloved action RPG.

We therefore recommend a purchase to old fans, and to all those who want to discover a title now entered in the legends of the JRPG, as long as they approach it with the awareness of having to eventually deal with the heavy limitations imposed by the weight of years.

This Secret of Mana remake is a solid new way to relive the classic although the original is clearly the better of the two options. Whether you enjoy it or not, here's hoping Square Enix announces a Seiken Densetsu 3 remake soon.

If you manage to look past the incredibly poor graphics and voice acting that awkwardly fits, you should have a blast with the remaster of a 1993 classic. If not, this is a release you should avoid. But ultimately, games should not require overlooking of flaws to be good. For that is a major flaw by itself.

The remaster’s asking price is high for what it offers, but hardcore fans who want to experience a new coat of paint may still want to check this out. Although the original game was a better package for its time, the remaster is still a fair way to enjoy this classic action-RPG.

When you cut right down to it, Secret of Mana has one serious issue: it isn’t fun (or as fun as one may remember). Whatever seemed like so much fun back in 1993 now seems like a chore in this version, and Square Enix wasn’t really of a mind to make it any better or, at the very least, prevent it from crashing before release (let’s hope this is patched quickly). What is likely going to happen with this release is that it is going to cause a lot of controversy amongst the fanbase, and the internet flame wars will rage on and on as to whether Square Enix really fouled up this remake or if the original was not as good as we remember it. Whatever camp you find yourself in, you probably already know if this title is worth $30 of your hard earned money, or if you will be perfectly fine leaving this game back in the SNES days where your younger self loved it so much.

Secret of Mana deserves a better remaster or remake than this. The game is revamped to look new, but there are numerous issues. The faces don't move and the gameplay just feels old on some accounts. Still the game is enjoyable for over 20 hours.

It really depends on if you've played the original Secret of Mana or if this is your first time, whether you're going to like this remake or not. The first group will enjoy the magical atmosphere and the subtle improvements made to the game, but the second group probably won't understand what all the fuss is about.

Secret of Mana’s remake lacks polish, but not power. The innovative-for-its-time combat is still fun and variable today, and its charming characters and precise pacing carry the story through the mechanically awkward moments. It may not be worth a revisit as a veteran, but those who have never played Secret of Mana should consider this a ripe opportunity.

A remake only makes sense when it truly enhances the original game. Guess what? This is not the case. For lack of a better option, it's best played on a Super Nintendo Classic Mini. The best way to describe this remake is "unnecessary", and it could be worth your time only if you don't have any other way to play the original.

Secret of Mana is a strange title. On one hand it has so many missteps in its redesign that it’s easy to quickly dismiss it, but it remains a rewarding gaming experience upon playing. A lot of changes take away from the original’s charm while several aspects that could have benefited from an update were left alone. Honestly what would have been ideal is if it was left in the original state and given a 2D sprite makeover in the style of Final Fantasy IV for the PSP and maybe added some minor updates like shops containing item descriptions, but even with the complaints that can be made about this remake, it’s still Secret of Mana. Almost every JRPG fan will enjoy this remake, though a better Secret of Mana experience can be found on Super Nintendo.

You may as well just play the SNES version, even if it's the first time you're ever picking up a Mana game: the original spritework is able to pick up the slack of a few of its inherent shortcomings, which are only exasperated by the swap to 3D. Secret of Mana is a fighter -- it's going to take more than a few flaws to take it down.

The Secret of Mana remake adds a few good things like hot keys and cut-scenes, but fails to improve upon some of the most notable flaws of the 1993 original. The adventure that so many people fell in love with is still there at its heart, but this version fails to show it off in the best light.

With SoM, Square Enix failed to leverage modern game design concepts and technology to improve on a treasured JRPG. Instead, they opted to do the bare minimum, and that's a damn shame.

The Secret of Mana Remaster was highly anticipated by a lot of fans and overall manages to capture the experience of playing the original within an all new outer shell of upscale graphics and new sound. It fails to make any revolutionary changes to the gameplay, forgoing an opportunity to improve on one of the all-time classic games, and the changes it does make (particularly the music) are hard to swallow at times. Secret of Mana for the PlayStation 4 is not quite a disappointment, but it does leave a less than satisfying feeling.

This new version of Secret of Mana doesn't add anything important to this timeless classic, presenting the same strengths and weaknesses of 25 years ago. It can still be fun with a couple fo friends on the same couch, but we won't recommend it over the Snes Classic Mini version of the original.

Sadly, Square Enix’s attempt to update the classic doesn’t live up the original’s legacy, nor does it improve its more problematic elements. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane, but the Secret of Mana remake is middling in every way.

Secret of Mana was an outstanding jRPG back in 1993 and this remake is a true love letter to fans. Unfortunately, besides upgraded graphics, a couple of cut-scenes and a brand new local co-op multiplayer, this new release does not add anything really worth to the core experience, and all the weakness of the original title are still there and sometimes they feel even worse.
  34. Mar 6, 2018

Caught right between a needed update and trying to strictly adhere to the original template, Secret of Mana doesn’t commit itself enough in either direction to justify owning it above any of the other versions.

    60
All in all, this Secret of Mana HD remake is a mixed offering. Opportunities to take an aged classic and keep the best parts and refine the not-so-great parts were largely left undone. The result is a game that still carries a lot of merit, but has enough flaws and setbacks that hold it back from realizing it’s full potential, and it makes it a frustrating choice for consumers. Perhaps if the budget and desire are there — and I’m not sure they are — some patching could go a long way to making this remake more robust.

Some of the design decisions will come off as a little strange, but there’s some decent fun buried in there. If you loved the Super NES original, however, this updated version will fill you with confusion, anger and disappointment.

As a fan of the Mana series, this remake is a huge opportunity to try the old title in a new fashion. But as a fan of RPG genre, few players can survive this lengthy, shallow experience.

Curiously lean[ing] on the magic that made Secret of Mana a seminal classic, this remake is serviceable in a pinch, but revisiting the original is probably a better use of time.

Nostalgia purists wanting to play Secret of Mana in 2018 are recommended to pick up a SNES Mini and enjoy the original in glorious HD. There’s not enough in the way of improvements in this remake to warrant the attention of the old guard.
  40. 60
So this won’t be remembered as a particularly good remake, and it’s tragic, because by itself, outside of the shadow of the game it’s a remaster of, Secret of Mana has its charms.
  41. Feb 19, 2018
    60
This Secret of Mana remake feels like a missed opportunity. It could have been a chance to tweak a few systems, strip away any outdated elements, and add in a few basic improvements. Overall the game is good but only because the original Secret of Mana was good; this remaster doesn’t add as much as it could and, if anything, removes some of the magic of the original.
  42. Feb 18, 2018

Its ambitions, coupled with the outright charm of the world, are certainly more than many RPGs offer, and very few as visually dazzling as this. Secret of Mana remains an adventure worth taking, as long as you're prepared for a bumpy ride.
  43. Feb 17, 2018
    60
On the one hand, it’s lost the look and feel of the original classic, so if you’re looking for a slice of RPG history, look elsewhere. On the other, the core, combat-heavy gameplay doesn’t really work for a modern audience; the fighting’s either aggravating or plain dull. Put it all together an you have a retro RPG that’s fun in places, but that wears away at your enthusiasm over the long haul.

Respect for the original game can be felt everywhere, but translating all that into 3D creates many issues. From inconsistent dialogue to UI that is rough around the edges, this is a remake that could have used a lot more polish.

    55
Secret of Mana might have been a remake we needed but ended up being an adaptation so shallow and flawed that you can't possibly think it is faithful mirror image of such a beloved videogame. Almost everything which didn't work has been worsened and even the colorful presentation is extremely subjective.
  47. Feb 27, 2018

While there’s plenty to love about the original Secret of Mana, this remake manages to kill off most the game’s charm while failing to modernize the parts of the game that actually need updating. Awkward animations, impenetrable menus, slow combat, and repeated random crashes add up to a game that, with 25 years of technological improvements under its belt, may actually be worse than the original.
  48. Feb 23, 2018
    50
Unwanted and unasked for, Secret of Mana does the bare minimum you’d expect from a remake, and when you consider the original’s beloved status, the fact that it’s been given such a lacklustre treatment is stupefying. There are some elements of modernity that are welcome – the dual language voice options for one – but taken as a whole, they’ve reassembled the base components of the game, but somehow lost the original’s charm in the process.
  49. 50
Secret of Mana is an entirely skippable remake of a game that was the progenitor for a number of JRPG conventions. That’s a shame. The greater failing, however, is what happens when fans will inevitably pick this title up in the hopes of recapturing some of the feelings of grandeur the original game contained so much of.
  50. Feb 19, 2018
    50
If you’d like to experience what makes Secret of Mana so great, you’ll find little in this remake. Stick with the original – that’s where the real legacy lies.
  51. Feb 19, 2018
    50
By choosing to apply a 3D mask taken from any random mobile game on the 1993 original, Secret of Mana delivers a remake that will satisfy no one. None of the bugs has been fixed, even though this translation finally gives us a closer glimpse of the scenario. But with such a price, its lazy artistic direction and wrong remixes will crush your childhood memories for good.
  52. Feb 19, 2018
    50
This remaster of Secret of Mana is proof that nobody should mess with a masterpiece unless the budget is more than enough. Emptied from its artistic soul, the game lacks any optimization to improve its gameplay and is thus difficult to recommend to anyone.

The original SNES classic deserves better than this overpriced and undercooked remake, which fails to recreate the original’s ‘90s charm.
  54. Mar 13, 2018
    45
If the idea was to preserve the original experience as much as possible while bringing the visuals up to modern standards, Secret of Mana fails with its slew of technical issues and unimpressive graphic design. If the intent was to forge a brand new experience based on the original, Secret of Mana fails as the dated combat engine challenged me in all the wrong ways and the added elements like voice acting fell flat with poor performances all around.
  55. Mar 6, 2018
    40
Secret of Mana isn’t an improvement in any way, and as such it fails the number one requirement of a remake – there’s no reason to recommend it over the original. Square Enix’s attempts to modernize this classic only make it feel older and less relevant, and the resulting mess is something I can’t see appealing to anyone. Returning fans will wish they were playing the original, and newcomers will likely wonder why Secret of Mana was ever such a big deal to begin with.

Sadly, while the original Secret of Mana was by no means a flawless experience, the remake's attempt to improve upon the formula has resulted in a game that's markedly inferior by comparison.
