With perfect controls, a unique and totally enthralling gameplay system and a gorgeous visual style absolutely dripping with charm, Shu is undoubtedly the best platform game of recent years – AAA or otherwise.

There’s something special about Shu. Though delightful, it’s not the graphics, the sculptured bones of its story, or even the titular character him/herself. It’s not the mechanics or the gameplay, despite a calm, intuitive system. The score is beautifully hypnotic, too, but no, it’s not that, either. While all of those things are pretty much fine and dandy as disparate entities in their own right, it’s the sum of these parts that gives Shu its uniquely whimsical magic.

It’s a love letter to a fantastic genre, and is such a pleasant way to spend an evening. It may not be a grand adventure like Super Mario World, but I enjoyed every single second of it, and that can’t be said about most games.

A little platformer that offers new mechanics in a graduated, character-centric fashion.

Shu is a great platformer inspired by some classic games, and although it never quite lives up to that inspiration, it still delivers a fun experience.

In general, the game is pretty good about introducing new characters/abilities at a steady pace to keep things interesting. That said, the moments where it’s just Shu can get pretty dull once you’ve had new abilities given and taken away in each world. What’s here is enjoyable enough, though, and the collectibles and time trials make for a decent incentive to spend just a bit more time with Shu, even after the credits.

Despite being a good, beautifully stylised game, Shu suffers from being too short. The price of $20 is well suited but this is a game you will most likely only play the once before pushing it to the back of your gaming draw. Not only is it going to sit at the back of your mind as a fond memory; sadly you’re not going to bother recommending it to anyone either.

It's a little on the short side, but if you're a fan of platformers then you definitely need to pick this up. Its art style gives Rayman a run for his money - and then some - and the gameplay is so tight you'll struggle to put it down. Well deserving of its high scores so far, it's just a shame more places haven't reviewed it. Seriously, give Shu a chance! Well done Coatsink and Secret Lunch, you've proved yourself to be incredibly worthy developers, and I can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeve next. Expand
