  • Summary: Love is a universal feeling, but each of us experiences it in a different way. Solo — Islands of the Heart explores the theme of love in an introspective way, allowing players to identify and reflect on their own experiences.

A contemplative seafaring adventure that tickles the brain in more ways than one. Occasionally the tide is choppy but you should stay the course nonetheless. [Issue#166, p.88]
  2. 60
Solo: Islands of the Heart is perhaps the most introspective game to release this year. The gameplay may not have much to do with the story, but the puzzles are decent roadblocks on the journey.
  3. 50
Solo: Islands of the Heart tries to intertwine block puzzles with an introspective look at love. In reality it is a puzzle game which asks you questions about love but never combines the two effectively. This stops them, and the other optional portions of the game, from feeling cohesive.

Maybe the connection between gameplay and theme existed more clearly in the developers’ heads than they managed to convey in the finished product. As it stands, Solo feels like a passable, if slight, puzzle-platformer trying to snag a little extra gravitas by gluing on a bunch of unrelated stuff about relationships. Despite the surface charm provided by the art style, the whole exercise felt disingenuous and gross, and I’m glad I never need to touch it again.
