2017 is the year the Sonic franchise stops running from itself. Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces celebrate different eras, but they both take the same shameless “all-in” approach. Sonic Forces is a confident game, serving up a story and stages that go for broke while dodging the pitfalls of the past. As long as you’re not a hardline 3D Sonic hater, this earnest, entertaining adventure is worth a spin.

Sonic Forces mashes together everything from Sonic’s history, from 2D/3D mechanics to over-the-top action spectacle pieces. The new customizable hero feature breathes fresh life into the franchise, but the 3D gameplay it uses overpowers the game’s attempt to combine what has made the different eras of Sonic work.

Sonic Forces improves on the 3D gameplay but ruins Classic Sonic. This game will be met with torches and pitchforks by the fans, but their kids will have fun with the custom created character and the rest of the game.

Unfortunately, all of its mechanics are shallow and mixed up... If you love the franchise, go back to playing Sonic Mania.

Sonic returns with an adventure full of good intentions, but poorly executed. The control and level design are the main issues to tackle, but if you're a hardcore fan Sonic, you'll probably enjoy the game.

Sonic Forces is yet another stumble in a series that looked like it had regained balance after Sonic Mania's launch. A game for hardcore fans, although won't be so appealing to the rest of potential buyers.

Whoever this shoddily made platformer is meant to please it won’t be those that like Sonic Mania, or any of the better 3D Sonic games.

Sonic Forces is actually a pretty fun game. The levels look cool and the story, it isn't too bad. A little dark I found for a sonic game but ISonic Forces is actually a pretty fun game. The levels look cool and the story, it isn't too bad. A little dark I found for a sonic game but I actually really enjoyed it. The visuals look great and the controls are pretty good most of the time. There are often time however where I may perform a spin dash when I didn't wanted but that is an over all minor thing.

The biggest problem for me was some of the level design. A few too often times would I fall into a pit or run into an enemy simply because you would be going too fast and not have enough time to react resulting in rings lost or falling in a pit. With that said, the levels do still look amazing and they are overall fun.

Bosses, some are very easy and some can be rather difficult which i do like as it does add a good balance. There is also a fair amount of variety in them however some, they are very similar.

I do like how they combine the 2D levels and the 3D levels, the transition between the two can be confusing at first but you do get used to it rather quickly.

Over all the game is pretty fun and I enjoyed it. There are a few flaws but they do not out-weight the positives. Music is great, story is good, level design is fairly decent with some flaws and the visuals are really good.

A brand-new 3D "Sonic" game has the community split in two? My, where I have seen this before? Oh, right, almost every Sonic game! "SonicA brand-new 3D "Sonic" game has the community split in two? My, where I have seen this before? Oh, right, almost every Sonic game! "Sonic Forces" has been a bit strange ever since it was first announced: the first true 3D "Sonic" game since "Sonic Lost World" in 2013...has Classic AND Modern Sonic? Again? And now you can create your own character? Huh? There were a lot of questions about the game, with many uncertain as to whether or not it would be good, especially after the release of the excellent "Sonic Mania" earlier this year. And I can honestly say that, while this game definitely disappoints in a number of ways, I still find it to be pretty enjoyable.
There are quite a few things to like about "Sonic Forces": for starters, it controls very well, which is something not a lot of 3D "Sonic" games can say. It's also pretty fun to play, and all-around, the game works: this isn't another "Sonic 06" where the game is buggy or hard to play: it's easy to get into and there's some fun to be had with it. The visuals are also gorgeous, the soundtrack is rockin', and there's plenty of fanservice here, what with all of the different characters from the series that appear here.
However, that leads into one of my biggest problems with the game: that it feels like the story was just taken from fanfiction.net or another similar site, as characters from throughout the series are thrown in for no reason other than just to remind you that they exist (and to remind you that you're playing an "anniversary" title of sorts). On top of that, while the game is fun to play, it's "Sonic" for better and for worse: it feels like "Sonic Colors" and "Sonic Generations," of course, but it does nothing to really keep the series fresh after four years, and instead it takes a few steps backwards: the game itself is more streamlined, it's a bit too simple, the levels (and the game itself, for that matter) are ridiculously short, the bosses are a bit repetitive, and the 2D Sonic levels feel like they were just slapped in to remind you that "Sonic Generations" exists.
With all of this in mind, it sounds like I really don't like this game, and that's actually not true: though extremely flawed, and nowhere near as good as it should've been, I actually had a pretty fun time with "Sonic Forces." The game will definitely not please everyone in the fanbase, but I can look past the flaws when the game itself is still quite fun and exciting, and all in all, I actually recommend that you all give it a shot because, even if you find yourself hating it, I think with a game like this, it's worth playing to see which side of the fence you sit on.
Final rating: 7 out of 10 "Good"

Really felt like a huge step back from generations. Game is very short most levels last about 2 minutes. Level Design is very amateur butReally felt like a huge step back from generations. Game is very short most levels last about 2 minutes. Level Design is very amateur but that's to be expected because for whatever reason sonic team put a bunch of people who never worked on a sonic game before as the level designers, and it really shows. Controls very poorly. The game plays itself most of the time because it's so damn linear. If you like generations or colors you might find some value in this, but if you don't like either of those games stay away from this one. Character creator was a nice touch and i hope it returns in future titles only reason my score isn't negative, creating a character is the most fun i have with this game, it's too bad the avatar is a nightmare to control most of the time.
