An old-school shooter boiled down to its core elements: Hard. Fast. Addictive. As soon as you think you’ve learned how the game works, it changes to a completely different genre, taking you through the history of the golden arcade era. Running. Driving. Flying. Speed Limit drags the best of the past to the present and then spends a few hours killing you repeatedly. That might sound like hard work but it’s some of the best fun I’ve had this year. The only question now is: when’s Speed Limit 2 coming out?

Speed Limit is a kaleidoscope of pixels, bullets and ever-changing gameplay. It's very short and not that deep mechanically, but speed runners and nostalgic people will love it because it’s an intense challenge and an inspired love letter to the 80s/90s.

Speed Limit is a heady mixture of tough as old boots nostalgia that requires patience and/or stubbornness to crack its punishing action set-pieces. The joy comes from trying to perfect your run on Speed Limit rather than simply beating it, and there’s varying mileage in this. At the very least, it’s a fun nostalgic showcase of several classic game types mushed together in a surprisingly cohesive fashion.

Speed Limit's tough, and frustrating, gameplay might mean it doesn't flow quite as nicely as we'd like but you have to admire the way it combines a heap of classic gameplay styles into one cohesive title.

If you don't mind restarting tricky segments over and over again then Speed Limit can be a very fun game with its action movie setup.

Pretty underrated. A surprisingly good game that it seems barely anyone has played, which is a shame. The gimmick of switching cameraPretty underrated. A surprisingly good game that it seems barely anyone has played, which is a shame. The gimmick of switching camera perspective/genre is solid, and there's lots of variety. The first mission is much harder than the rest of the game so I'd suggest that anyone getting a bit stuck near the start persevere. Expand
