Stories is a game that has a lot of heart. Sure, there are plenty of things in this game that I have seen before in some form or fashion, but it never stopped me from having a fantastic time with it.

Overall, this is one action-RPG fans won’t want to miss.

A different take on the choose-your-own-adventure genre, Stories is fantastic breath of fresh air. Though environments will soon become repetitive alongside the general gameplay, there’s no reason why this can’t become a series of it’s own.

It’s like taking part in an anthropomorphic fairytale version of Groundhog Day. Reynaldo is an instantly lovable hero, but the true strength of the game lies in the amazingly witty work of the ever-prevalent narrator. The narration is of such a high quality that even manages to overshadow –for a while- the issues of level repeatability and its utterly simplistic gameplay.
  5. 70
If the RPG mechanics are your main attraction, you’ll probably be disappointed, but as an experiment in choice-driven narratives, Stories is clever, impressive, and well worth a look.

That said I absolutely recommend setting aside the five hours it’ll take to unlock the four truths and to seek out the true ending. The narrative and how it’s told is really interesting and is absolutely worth seeing.

No wonder the game leans so heavily on pop-culture references, as they help to distract from the relative emptiness of the game itself.

Going in blind made this game a great surprise. The combat is very satisfying without being too easy or too hard. I'll find myself up against a mass of enemies and some how manage to get to a high combo without taking a hit, but then get poked once in the next fight against 3 baddies when I let my guard down for a second.

The single greatest aspect is how the story unfolds. I absolutely need to see how every story thread unfolds and I am now in the process of not being productive for the foreseeable future.

The only reason I am not giving this a 10, and I really really want to give it one, is that there are some really annoying bugs. Fairly frequently (once every 10 levels or so) terrain will just fail to load which forces you to restart the level midway in certain circumstances. I also got stuck in the terrain while breaking ice crystals once.

All things said this is well worth the $15 USD. I would honestly have paid $25 and been happy with it.

At first the plot might seem a little bit confusing but as you progress and complete multiple play throughs, each with different choices and consequences, you start to appreciate the characters and the grand scheme of things. The combat although simple is very fluid and enjoyable with multiple swords at your disposal each with different abilities. The world is beautiful and the vibrant colours makes you want to revisit it after you finish a play through. The game is filled with pop-culture references and the narrator always found ways to make me chuckle and keep the story fresh.

However there are no real challenges in this game and even though there are 25 possible endings you will feel like you have seen everything after 7 or so play through, which is enough to fully appreciate the game, so getting all 25 possibilities can feel quite tedious and repetitive.

Very basic combat, but the troll narrator is a plus, the branching story lines are kind of cool, but the grind fighting the same monsters with very basic hack and slash and same areas become a bit tedious half way through the game. This type of game is great if you have time to kill, surprised this never made it to handheld. Pros: Semi- addictive, played to see how each story would end, troll narrator. Cons: Repetitive area and enemies, trial and error story line. The so-so: basic gameplay and loot/ rpg elements. Expand
