SMAA doesn't aim to do anything particularly novel, preferring to embrace the clone nature of the game and make that aspect as good as it can be. There's no doubt they made the right decision there, as you'll be hard pressed to not enjoy your time with SMAA.
It was an extremely pleasant surprise.

Super Mutant Alien Assault isn't the greatest shooter in recent memory, but that doesn't take away the fact that it's just really fun to play. And there's plenty of depth tucked away for you to discover the more you play.
Although it's short and unspectacular, Super Mutant Alien Assult is a fun arcade platform shooter that is worth a visit.
Super Mutant Alien Assault will keep your attention for a few playthroughs, but don’t expect much else.
It’s clean and works, but it’s a game that is difficult to see people getting long-term value out of it.
Super Mutant Alien Assault has some good ideas in it, but the balance of quality vs quantity was shifted way too far towards the latter, resulting in a potentially excellent platformer that’s been ruined with unnecessary filler. Give this one a miss unless you’re a huge fan of getting really angry at video games.
Summary A rapid, brutal arcade platformer. You need to fight off an alien assault across 12 rapid-fire single-screen levels. Each with a random combination of platform layout, objective, vending machines and enemies.
