After waiting 7 years for a follow-up to the standard-bearing Top Spin 4, I had very high hopes for this game. I quickly discovered it is an all-around disappointment in every way. I could go into the glaringly poor audio, the lack of licensed events and tournament sites, the stilted commentary...and I didn't even bother with the career mode, not to mention the LACK OF ONLINE PLAY UPON RELEASE. But by far the biggest problem is the gameplay, the most critical component of the game.

This game represents huge leaps backward on every aspect of Top Spin 4. The animations are clunky and drawn out, and not particularly specific to the unique players. This leads to difficult, awkward movement, both along the baseline and to the net. A HUGE pet peeve: if you stretch to hit a flat shot or a topspin shot, the game repeatedly defaults to sliced shots, or little chip shots. By far, most shots struck, regardless of the button you select, result in chips down the middle. This is wildly unrealistic and in direct opposition to the user's control and wishes. The spin varieties end up becoming meaningless, as everyone simply chips the ball back and forth repeatedly (and the spins don't seem to impact the opposing player's reply shot). The rallies are repetitive and boring.

The AI player wanders into "no man's land" (the large rectangle behind the service boxes) to return all shots consistently--another massive no-no in tennis, and another thing that most people would notice after watching a pro match for ten minutes. This means that timing seems irrelevant--you have no idea where to go to get the best strike on the ball. Sometimes players rip a shot into the corner with the tiniest racket movement right off the bounce, other times they don't swing at all.

The players may as well all be the same, as they all play the same. You don't get a feel for Federer's silky movement and forehand, the weight of Wawrinka's shots, McEnroe's impeccable volley, etc. etc. They might as well all be the same avatar. Top Spin 4's brilliant combination of precision shots (made with a simple tap of the button) and power shots (made by holding the button), which equipped players with full control of their avatar and allowed them to maximize the unique strengths of their selected players, are ditched in favor of a confusing mix of the two--again, with little measurable feedback to know what shot you hit and when it is best.

Serving is sensitive and it seems users have little control over power and placement.

Some of the animations are downright embarrassing; at least one Twitter user posted an image of a ball fully one to two feet behind a player, followed by another frame of the ball being returned, without *at all* being struck by the avatar. There are also framerate issues--unacceptable for a game that isn't exactly too sophisticated visually.

Dear 2K/Sony: Please port Top Spin 4!!!

    DO NOT BUY:

This is embarrassing given what was expected and promised during development. I paid for the legend edition on PSN i'd say at the moment this is more of a PSN title than fully fledged game.

    Presentation:

The game is lifeless both in it's delivery from commentary to umpire down to the overall look of the courts and crowd engagements. The ball kids don't move to retrieve the ball and no matter where the event is the umpire and crowd reactions are appalling even in exhibition mode playing at their version of Wimbledon.

We see big Eurosport signs but this has no enhancement to the games feel or delivery it's purely aesthetic which when having a major global broadcaster of Tennis you would of expected to feel like you're there! However in career thus far I've been nothing short of feeling like I'm down a local park not a tournament.

    Gameplay:

The mechanics are very clunky. The control is feel totally unresponsive and prone to bring caught in animations which prevent you from returning an easy shot. If you approach the net (running on to the ball) the players seem all to often to stumble and this seems unavoidable and like the game is built for baselines only.

Serving is very difficult. With no knowledge of arch system to detect where the ball is being placed it's impossible to attack or place serve without committing a fault. Simerily with in game shots, I can feel as though I've put the ball in a corner with my analogue stick and the ball not go anywhere near. As for some training drills I don't think they're possible with the control system being how it is coupled with the mechanics of player movement.

The events structure in career is also confusing. Only allowing players to partake in one event per month is baffling when we know players have to juggle multiple events and practice sessions.

You're advised to rest but then the only way to develop in career is to play and win events (rankings) so I feel although it's our career we're dictated to by the linearity of the season's structuring.

    Modes:

There is no online, I know the game has been delayed till June first but for US and PSN users this should have been delayed also to endure the title is fully completed.

It's very basic with only tournaments and exhibitions and career. No challenge moments no historical challenges.

In career you're advised to use coaches and agents to develop your player although I feel they've been put there to feed trophies via unlocks and level ups instead of actually enhancing a players career.

    Verdict:

At present I would advise against the purchase of Tennis World Tour. Having seen reviews for AO tennis I expected a great deal from this title under the impression that Top Spin 4 members were in the development. In my opinion unless things change via patches or the price decreases if you want to experience tennis on console play Top Spin 4. For 2018 this game lags severely behind the expectations of today's era of console games in the sports genre!

OK, there is still no first day patch , but there is just to much lacking to be fixed with a fix. The audio is really bad . Gameplay audio is OK but the audience and commentary are just to shallow . Lot of points you don't hear any audience . John McEnroe keeps repeating a handful of remarks, it does not feel like somebody is commenting a real match.
When you have a LET during a serve you don't hear anything . This is strange because all the other calls are there.

The graphics are a real letdown... I looked up the top spin 4 streams on the PS3 and I am sad to say that that game looks way better. Sony should be ashamed to release this content for people who have bought the PS4 Pro and a 4K screen. I was playing God Of War before this and when I saw the first graphics it looked like I was playing a Dreamcast game. The animations look a bit goofy when you are walking / running. textures are really shallow. Animations of the crowd are really strange. I was playing a tiebreak and when my opponent was serving the audience was still clapping from the previous point.

Careermode is OK when you look at the level system and the ability to level up your player. You can use several coaches and agents to earn specific boosts. But compared to other sports games it looks again really shallow. For instance , when I play fifa18 " The Journey " you have a socialmedia system which gives you feedback on your peformances. In this game there is nothing except your Ranking that gives you feedback on your performances. Again , to shallow for a game lke this.

The player roster is also lacking major big players. With the Legend edition I got Federer , Agassi and Mcenroe. Where is Djokovic !? Ok , I will probably get additional players on the longrun but still , You want to play as Nadal as you play Federer am I right ?

So why not give this game a 1 or 2 like many other users ? Because if you play the game you will get some long rally's that will still get you that Top Spin feeling. I still enjoy myself when I play this game. It makes you realise what could have been ! Hopefully there will be a major patch really soon , but it cannot fix all the things that are wrong in this game.

    I will NEVER pre-order a game ever again !!

Buy this game in maybe a few months in the PSN Store when it's like 19 euro's or something and you have all the DLC and patches. For now , stay away from this title ...

I have to react as it comes, which to me is a breath of fresh air ... (except Legendary Federer needs a bit of tweaking) It is often said a game should be easy to learn and difficult to master.. Tennis world tour makes its first mistake in being difficult to understand through lackluster skill games that dont explain the mechanics enough(although the good players dont want them revealing the very fine details which will give us the slight edge in a game of tennis, but this game rewards the diligent that are willing to learn how to actually master it

This game IS the true successor to Topspin, It feels like topspin except with the above mentioned improved AI.

    The negatives
    - some additional shot animations needed, need more backhand and forehand styles.
    - Atmosphere and commentary - need more lines and improvment
    - Ball sounds, should be fixed in a patch theyre a bit flat
    - I think the Fatigue mechanic in the game should be reworked if not removed.
    - More pro players and legends
    - Immersive online ranking system and tournaments ( Apparently this is coming.. so holding judgement)

If you can look past its flaws - which is has AT THE MOMENT, this game has promise and potential even if it has not yet fully delivered yet. I recommend BUY: for the patient, WAIT, for the impatient.
