Hope that maybe this game might do what the original did 10 years ago. Unfortunately, all the fans got was another cheap cash in made by Beenox and Activison to cap on the tie-in movie’s release.

The one thing to get down in a Spider-Man game is the gameplay that makes Spider-Man the superhero he is. His super strength, his wall crawling, and more importantly, his web swinging. The web swinging in this game, although not amazing, is honestly pretty fun. The game utilizes both of the triggers to make Spidey swing, tying the left and right hand to the respective triggers. Press the left trigger to swing, the web will shoot left, and Spider-Man will naturally start to turn left. It’s the same on the opposite swing. This unique mechanic works, it’s fun, and it looks cool, but it doesn't have the natural flow you’d want it to. Waiting for Spider-Man to finish an animation for him to shoot out a web well after you made him got annoying, and it ultimately gives you less control. Combine this with the awkward wall crawling and wall running that’s hard to control, and the essence of Spider-Man still remains to be captured.

Next is the combat, which was actually one of the previous highlights of the first Amazing Spider-Man game. Wherein that game the combat was done well and really fun, the combat has actually taken a small hit in combat. Combat works like the Batman Arkham games, chaining attacks to increase your combo score, and using your spider-sense to counter attacks. Unlike the first game, where Spider-Man’s combat felt fast and responsive, this game’s combat feels slower and choppier. There were times where I would press the dodge button multiple times and Spider-Man just wouldn’t respond. Plus, the annoying auto lock fails to lock onto the enemies you want it to, and the combat can get on your nerves.

Then there’s the boss fights, which aren't terrible by any means, but they feel so generic. For enemies like Shocker and Carnage, you’d think there’d be more variation in fighting them, but in all honesty, the boss fights don’t feel very different from fighting the generic thug on the streets.

The biggest improvement from the last game is the stealth gameplay, which resulted you feeling over powered and made stealth too easy. Now, the stealth’s new restrictions actually improve it. All enemies have an area of vulnerability that you can enter for an instant takedown, which can be achieved from nearly any position. Plus, the spider sense allowing you to see through walls is a nice mechanic. Stealth is easily one of the best parts of this game.

Lastly, there’s the open world of New York which easily contains the biggest problem in this game. Spider-Man’s duty as a hero is to, of course, save the city, which the game represents through side missions. However, this duty is something the game tries to force on you with the hero/menace mechanic. This mechanic sums up to how many side missions you do. Do more of them, and your hero level goes up. Ignore too many, and you could cross the line and become a menace to society, at which point the task force in the city will try to take you down. This mechanic is annoying because it forces side content - which is supposed to be optional - to be completed, or you’re punished for it. This is made worse by going farther in the game, which only creates more, and they become a grind to get through, with no worthwhile reward for completing them

Now, moving away from the gameplay, the game fails to impress in any real way. The graphics are terrible, and are outdated, even on the last generation of consoles. The story is sub par, not following the movie in any real way, or even bothering to use any of the original voice actors from the film. Andrew Garfield is missing, and this Peter Parker is just a terrible looking imitation. The story does try to throw a lot of interesting characters into the mix, but they really feel shoe-horned in. Carnage, Shocker, Black Cat, and even the Green Goblin manage to suffer from this. The only really interesting character thrown in is Kraven, which is well voice acted by Steve Blume.

Ultimately, Amazing Spider-Man 2 can be summed up like this. For every good thing the game does right, there's an equally bad deterrent or flaw holding it back. Either that, or the mechanics fail to introduce something compelling while at the same time not being horrible. Because of this, the game meets somewhere in the middle between good and bad. It's not the worst movie tie in game, and hardcore Spidey fans might want to try it, since it does have it's good points, but in the end, it's a really painfully average game.

Should you get this? Only if you want to return it later. The story is crappy, the free roam is the best EVER, but that is ruined by the Menace/hero system in which you HAVE to complete mini missions unless you wanna get shot out of the sky by robots.

The developer did a decent job making the game, sadly the only interesting part about the game was The hero or menace" system, which Rewards Super Hero behavior by rewarding the web-slingers crime fighting efforts, and Includes consequences allowing criminality fester, which eventually falls apart. The game lacks in a variety of ways but some of the experiences keeps the game worth playing.

If you're a fan of spider man and you're looking for a game to waste a bit of time playing you won't be disappointed.

Web slinging feels fun, much improved over some of the past games in my opinion. The combat is fairly solid, although not up to the level of the recent Batman games. Story is cheesy, dialog can be cheesy as well but it feels authentic at the same time.

I have been waiting for this game the way some of you out there await the new call of duty, desperately counting the days until I could once again swing around New York as everyone's favorite web-head. It is because I love the character and the franchise so much that I have taken time out of my day to write this review. Beenox, if you guys are reading this you should probably sit down for a minute. This game feels like an unfinished, thrown together, cut and paste (yet somehow worse) slap in the face to fans of your previous game. It's 2014, and when we boot up a game on our next gen systems we shouldn't be greeted with what looks like half baked concept art for an opening sequence to an A list franchise. Spidey's model looks pretty good up close but that is about the end of that. Peter Parker is apparently being played by a different actor this time around and I'm not talking about the voice, just look at that character model, who the heck is that guy? During cut scenes the characters seem... well.. I guess overly animated would be the term. Spidey is gesturing and dancing around constantly during conversations like he has to pee something fierce. You will also notice in one early cutscene he is dodging machine gun fire that keeps going long after spiderman stops moving. By the way, this may be a system specific issue with sound sync I'm only reviewing the ps4 version. The menus may be the laziest I have seen in a long time, want to enter this compound blue box for yes blue box for no, my phone menus are more dynamic. I know I'm getting nitpicky but these are just little things that add up to my conclusion that this game was rushed. Needless to say I was more then a little let down.
Chin up though, things aren't all bad. Swinging around openworld New York is fun as always and feels more dynamic and controllable with the added left trigger left hand/ right trigger right hand feature. Unfortunately web-zipping is still a broken mess with Spidey often teleporting a few feet before finally landing at his perch. Combat animations feel more fluid and the ability to web the bad guys to walls and ceilings is pretty cool. The God-father himself Mr. Stan Lee makes a more then walk-on appearance as your friendly neighborhood comic store owner. And while he seems completely out of place in the game ya gotta respect the guy. The saving grace of this game would have to be the story, it was interesting enough to keep me engaged while simultaneously pulling my hair out fighting with the camera.
At the end of the day I am a die hard spider-man fan, that being said I would have bought this game if the developers sneezed into a tissue, wrote spider-man on the top of it and sold it to me. However Beenox's previous adventure had set my expectations quite high especially for a movie tie-in and I am very sorry to say that this one does not meet the same standard in my humble opinion.

People have complained about the graphics (which really are sub-par for a PS4 game (and yes I understand it's multiplatform), but that's not what really got to me in this game. The story and flow was just absolutely horrid. There was no rhyme or reason to what was happening in the game. There are 14 main missions and each one ends with some form of boss fight. Then they hastily scrap together a cut scene where they direct your attention somewhere else. The entire game I just felt like they were saying, "Hey look at all of these characters that we know about! Look at them in the game! Look you can fight them! Look you're interacting with them! Hey look over there! Do this! Do that! Aaaaaaand, you're done."

The 14 missions were beaten in absolutely no time.
    The combat is laughably easy.
The story (if you can call it that) is completely incoherent.

The game provides you with points to upgrade Spider-Man's powers. You can choose to upgrade his senses, web-slinging, web-swinging, and a couple web-attacks which are really only useful in specific situations. I rushed the web-swinging/movement upgrades because I figured they'd be important to get around the city. Boy was I wrong. The only movement pieces you need are the web rush if you're good at it, and possibly the first swing boost upgrade. The slingshot is pointless because you must slow down far too much in order to use it. And slowing down is a very bad thing.

One of the things I hated in this game was the constant need to be moving. A bar is shown above the mini-map that dictates where the people of New York see you as a menace or see you as a hero. All it takes to pull you up into hero status is a couple of side missions that are considered heroic acts (ending police deadlocks, stopping petty crime, rescuing people from burning buildings, etc.). These pop up on the map for Spider-Man to complete as part of being a hero. Ultimately, you must choose to complete these missions, or ignore them. Ignoring them means your hero bar is going to go down and people may start viewing you as a menace. When you're a menace the task force comes after you and the game just gets downright annoying. It wouldn't be so bad if the timeouts on these tasks weren't so short. I would find myself swinging to the main objective and hoping that multiple tasks in multiple locations (yes, you will "ignore" tasks because they timeout at the same time all the way across town) wouldn't timeout before I could reach it.

This rushing around left me no time to appreciate the city that they made. All the buildings were meaningless to me and I found myself growing frustrated with the clunky way Spider-Man maneuvered, even after a couple hours of practice (oh wait, that was the whole game).

    Good points about the game:
-It was fun. I really did find myself enjoying parts of it, despite my utter confusion at the story
-When you do get a good rhythm down for web-swinging, it feels great. While it's going to be short lived because the city is so quickly traversed, those few moments where you actually have it down are glorious.
-You feel powerful. Ordinary thugs are chump change to the Spider-Man. And boy does the combat make it feel that way. While I prefer a more complete/complex combat system, the ease at which you dispose of thugs feels appropriate for being an arachnid superhuman. (Negative: There are few variations of the combat and it gets old a little quick)

    Negatives:
-Short "story." It's really just a mish-mash oft missions where you go after individual villains, written up around a shoddy framework of a plot.
-Clunky maneuverability controls that don't feel comfortable until you're practically done with the game (at least that's how long it took for me)
-Horrible camera control. Perching upside down and even horizontal on buildings caused me to have to completely stop what I was doing just so I could reorient myself. It destroyed flow in combat/movement.
-Poor dialogue. Although this feeds more into the bad story and plot.
-Simple combat with no room to spice anything up. I found myself mashing the square button repeatedly, with the occasional triangle counter, for the majority of the game. Even the boss battles played out almost the same.
-Loading times and transitions are inordinately slow and cumbersome for this day and age.

There is more that can probably be said about the game for both it's positives and it's negatives. I only spent a couple of hours with the game, but beat it's main missions and feel like I've had everything it's had to offer. Another reviewer may feel differently about some of it, but I really do feel like they've missed the mark from what they were trying to achieve. Those of you looking for a next-gen Spider-Man to rival Spider-Man 2, turn back. This is not the game you are looking for. Time to dust off your console and rock the previous generation until they get our hopes up again.

Swinging around New York is exhilarating and the fact that the webs actually need to attach to buildings is nice (and realistic). Beenox has mapped the R2, L2 or right rigger/left trigger to spidey's hands. If you want to attach to a building to your right hold R2, if you want to attach left hold L2. It's a nice addition and feels very fluent.

Unfortunately that seems to be all Beenox got right this time around. I don't know how or why but they seem to be getting worse at making Spider-Man games over time. The combat is identical to the last game with a few new additions that don't really spice things up much. The side missions are repetitive and boring. Beenox has introduced the "hero/menace" system which is pointless and extremely annoying. You need to keep yourself in the hero status or the task force will start to attack you. There are so many crimes happening all the time that it is difficult to maintain the hero status because if you fail to prevent a crime you get penalized for it. The side missions don't vary much (car chase, fires, deadlocks, petty crimes, bombs, rescue injured civilian).

Now as for the main story.. Wow just straight up pathetic. Whoever wrote this story deserves to be fired. The plot is so tangled (no pun intended) and incoherent that you honestly don't care at about it at all. They just seem to introduce a new super villain in each chapter. Another new feature Beenox has added is being able to play as Peter Parker...Talk about boring. It basically consists of you asking people questions in any order you desire and without consequences and then snapping a few pictures. You don't even have to ask the desired questions if you don't feel like it. You can just choose finish conversation. The other questions do little to move the plot forward. As for the graphics they are ok, nothing spectacular. But after playing Infamous Second Son for the past month, spidey just doesn't seem up to snuff in the graphics department.Overall a disappointing game. It feels rushed and I know it's because they wanted to coincide with the movie, which is a shame.

Activision needs to give another developer a shot at a Spider-Man game because in my opinion Beenox just isn't a good developer. They need to take a page out of Arkham and create an original story set in it's own universe. There was so much potential for this game but it was squandered away.
