Although I hate to be so vague about The Bunker, giving away too much would be doing a great disservice to anyone reading this review. Instead, I’ll simply say that it’s one of the most enjoyable FMV games I’ve ever played, and that I’d recommend prospective players block out two hours and go through it all in a single sitting. My compliments to Splendy Games, and I’m now officially on record as being quite prepared to drop a few dollars on whatever they turn out next.

As the industry gears up for another bumper holiday season, The Bunker offers something a little different. It doesn't attempt to give you a bulk of gameplay or mechanics, but it makes up for this and more in its plot and characters. Don't let this experience pass you by if you're looking for an interesting and superb story, because we think this is the FMV genre at its very best.

It’s difficult to speak in detail about the story simply due to the amount of spoilers and the overall length of it. Some people value their game prices based on length alone and for those players, The Bunker isn’t for you. This is a game that has value beyond gameplay time. If you want a game with an interesting story, with some good twists, and can appreciate a game that uses live action as the base, I would recommend checking it out.

Despite my initial impressions, I really enjoyed The Bunker. I’m never going to play it again, but for the couple of hours it lasted it held my attention and expertly racked up the tension. It is certainly not for everyone, but it entertained me for it’s duration and you can’t really ask much more than that.

The team has succeeded in creating something that feels truly different and unique, but it's over too quickly and far too simple as a game.

A wonderfully tense and oppressive atmosphere let down by the restrictions of live action interactivity.

Showcasing a clever narrative steeped in great performances and anchored by a real sense of place, The Bunker sadly doesn't last long enough or offer sufficient incentive to return to its titular subterranean dwelling once the credits roll on this interactivity-light adventure.

I downloaded The Bunker on PS4 because I hadn't played an FMV or Full Motion Video video game in many years. If you haven't played an FMVI downloaded The Bunker on PS4 because I hadn't played an FMV or Full Motion Video video game in many years. If you haven't played an FMV game before, check this one out just to have the experience. This game is all about the story, and the story is excellent. The way I rate a game is by determining how much I valued playing it at the time and how I look back one it once it's done and over. This game has a lasting effect on me due to its story. I didn't see the twist end coming, mostly because I wasn't expecting one so I wasn't looking. Looking back, it was a great story that was well told. A criticism of the game is that it's too short (it took me 2 hours to complete the first time), but I found it to be the perfect length for the story it told. Any longer and I would have to complain that there was too much filler gameplay. The gameplay that is here is basic Adventure style where you have to find a fuse to swap out a burned out one, but they're right nearby and you never have to guess at what you're supposed to do next. It's the most basic of interactions and goes well with the 3/4 movie, 1/4 game setup. The beginning minutes are very slow, but the game is teaching you that life is boring and lonely in the bunker, and the protagonist does the same mundane tasks every day (until something finally goes wrong). So I appreciated that the beginning was boring because I really felt the boredom the main character felt.

There are toy figurines to find and extra computers and paper files to read that unlock trophies. They encourage a second playthrough, which I was happy to do since I knew the ending and wanted to see how all of the pieces fit together. I appreciate that the trophies are easy to accomplish but are intrinsic enough to warrant a second attempt at it.

The two complaints that I have about the game are first the two endings, which don't add anything to the story (either way the game just ends after you make the ultimate choice, the story stops). Secondly, my wife played through it and she's a moderate to low-end gamer, usually liking story games like the TellTale series or Gone Home, etc. There are times in this game where you need to focus your cursor on a prompt and press the X button as fast as you can to fill a little meter, and even when she knew the interaction was coming, she couldn't overcome it, having to hand it off to me to complete. I felt the difficulty of the button presses did increase the tension in the dramatic moment, but the spike she couldn't overcome on her own was unwarranted. If you can't tap fast enough you're going to be stuck and likely upset for good reason. Overall, I highly recommend this game to anyone who hasn't experienced an FMV game or anyone who likes a good story. If you're looking for a good "game" with lots of puzzles or challenging Adventure style like Myst, you've got the wrong impression about The Bunker. 9/10

Unable to fully commit to one or the other, The Bunker finishes as a jumbled mess that is best avoided.

    Pros:
    - Interesting world view
    - Good plot twist
    - Chapter 8

    Cons:
    - Often difficult to select interactions, with the buttons located in unintuitive places
    - The constant floating crosshair is annoying and immersion breaking
    - Cuts in film are jarring and immersion breaking
    - Losing on a QTE jumps you back to minutes of unskippable cut scenes - mostly of the character climbing or descending stairs
    - Far too often a scene is broken up simply for an excuse to give the gamer a button to press. E.g. stopping a stair climbing sequence to make me press the button to climb more stairs.
    - Poor productions values; bad lighting and sets that feel like sets rather than locations

    Mixed:
    - While the acting is mostly awkward and stunted, and the actress playing the mother is atrocious, it is overall not as bad as I would expect from a live action game.

The Bunker tried to situate itself between a movie and a game, but failed to deliver on either medium. There isn't enough gameplay to succeed at being a game, and if it were a feature film it would be a low-rate B movie at best. Even at it's 90 minute run time, this experience ran on for too long. Avoid, no matter the price.
