  • Summary: Dark times mean fear and risks. The risk to be caught by patrolling National Socialists, looking for people who publicly stand against their point of view. The risk to be caught by patrolling National Socialists, looking for people who publicly stand against their point of view. The risk of being beaten up or even killed by the German military because we're opposing the regime. The risk of losing everything, including our loved ones. This is how we live. This is how we try to survive. Through the darkest of times.

You are the leader of a small resistance group in 1933's Berlin, of ordinary people, from Jews to Catholics and Communists to Patriots who simply can't stand aside. Your goal is to deal with small blows to the regime dropping leaflets to spread awareness about what the Nazis are really up to among the people, painting messages on walls, sabotaging, gathering information and recruiting more followers. And all of that while staying undercover if the regime's forces learn about your group, the life of each member is in grave danger.

Through the Darkest of Times is a historical resistance strategy game, focusing on conveying the somber mood of the period and the very real struggles of average people living in the 3rd Reich. Historical accuracy means that your small group of resistance fighters will not change the outcome of the war, nor will you prevent all of the Nazi's atrocities, but you can certainly do everything in your power to save as many lives as you can and oppose the fascist system wherever possible.

Through the Darkest of Times is a deftly handled depiction of life under the Nazis and how those few brave or bloody minded enough to defy the regime did so at great risk to their own and their loved ones wellbeing. The parallels to current events make this all the more essential. More a historical dramatisation with game elements than a game in the conventional sense, but you owe it to yourself to play this.

The Night is Darkest Before The Dawn. Through the Darkest of Times is an interesting strategy game that combines the storytelling of a visual novel with the tactics of a war table planner. The art style is striking in its simplicity and the music provides an immersive ambiance. The game’s focus on telling the story of the fight against the Nazis from the inside offers a compelling plot and plenty of character moments that draw you in.

The Darkest of Times stark and sobering reminder of how lucky we are, and what sacrifices were made for the greater good. As basic as you can get for a strategy game but it’s all the better for it.

The team paints a grim picture of hopelessness and struggle during that time through both narrative and game mechanics. Even small tasks are difficult and frightening to accomplish. The story gives a historical view of what it might have felt like to live in Berlin at the time and see the majority of your fellow Germans fall in line with the madness of Hitler. Interestingly, the game randomly generates your character's race and political background at the beginning, which changes how some characters will interact with you through the game - leading to some surprises if you play through more than once.
I played on PS4 and did not encounter any bugs. The minimalist art and music works well for the theme. The text and icons can be a bit small playing on a television and controlling menus with a controller can feel a bit clunky - I suspect it might be better played on a PC - but those issues didn't get in the way of an experience that felt important and sticks in my mind. This is a great example of games as a medium.
