A stellar remastering of one of the best fighting games ever, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Edition is at the very apex of Sega's long running series and in doing so, its elevated profile will hopefully propel the franchise forward as a whole to heights that it has long deserved. Virtua Fighter is back and it's better than ever.

Mechanically Virtua Fighter 5 still is an outstanding Vs-fighting-game that looks better than ever. But it lacks singleplayer content as well as a modern netcode.

While the game itself is basically the same Virtua Fighter 5 bolstered with a graphical makeover, it’s hard to fault it when the core fighting system is just so meticulously polished. Regardless of what the future may hold for the franchise, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is a welcome return of a 3D fighting legend, one that looks and plays better than it ever has before. The major caveat here is that the wealth of online multiplayer options are potentially held back by the netcode.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is a revamped and remastered version of a brilliant game released over a decade ago. Despite the simple 3-button setup, the battle system is surprisingly deep. This game is easy to access but hard to master. Every fighter has his unique fighting style and everyone can find is perfect fitting. SEGA obviously wants to push the online experience since offline modes are very limited. Expect regular free updates for netcode and new contents in the next months.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown is solid and deep, but the outdated netcode needed way more improvement.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown's one goal was to update this old-school and finely aged fighter for a modern platform. In that, it excels. This is a classic fighting game that holds up to this day. Despite that, though, it's a shame that so many single player offerings had to be cut in order to achieve this vision. Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is a perfect competitive fighter for the modern world, but for someone looking to mess around with it offline, your options are disappointingly limited compared to previous versions of the game.

A lazy and bite-free remastered, designed for online but with a netcode absolutely not up to par. A carefully created online component would certainly have made a combat system shine that remains solid and fun after decades, finally bringing the saga back to the beat 'em up giants. Let's hope Sega has learned his lesson and wants to "get serious" next time.

I just forgot how technical and deep the combat mechanics are in VF. After booting up this on ps5 I realised how much I missed VF series. Trully a joy

Offline matches are quickly and every stage increases the level of the opponent, making hard to bet all while is a good challenger. At the same time everyday changes, the lineup for you to fight.
Online you have to level up every character instead of your profile, therefore you have to use different fighters if you want to show that you are really good.
I love this retro game and enjoy playing old fight game online, especially in the pandemic where you can't receive anyone in your house, different of the old days

New graphics, ok, but again, it's remaster of remaster of a 2006-7 game with the same amount of content, characters and freacking stupud sound work (voices and sounds of kicking and this sort in particular). Totally wait for changes there, devs should add some DLC or just guest characters like from Yakuza series or else. Technically gameplay is good, but the game is barebones, like there is most simple arcade mode without story, without any cutscenes or character info + no story mode. If you're not a fan of fighters like, where you need to learn moves to master it, not just play it for fun and story, it's probably not for your eyes, but you still can play couple of decent rounds online or beat your friend. IsDont know why they bothered, it looks and runs almost identical to the "back compat Xbox one" and PS3 version of the game I already own. Is that why there is No Xbox One version, because it would be to obvious they did nothing? Well nothing good!!
In fact the characters looked better in the older versions. Resolution , frame rate , visuals, they did nothing except mash the fases, paste new art over profiles and maybe lower pysics..
Waste of a PS pluss game as there no reason to pick this game up again.

Just to be clear, Virtua Fighter 5 online for the 360 is in the top 20 of my favorite games of all time. Considering that I've been playingJust to be clear, Virtua Fighter 5 online for the 360 is in the top 20 of my favorite games of all time. Considering that I've been playing games close to 30 years and have played 100's of them, that means something to me.

Virtua Fighter 5 Online had this excellent quest mode that encouraged new players (like me at the time) to learn and experiment with many different characters. With each victory you had in quest mode you improved your rank and increased your chances of unlocking one of the many costume pieces for your character. Eventually you would have to travel to a more difficult arcade, forcing you to go into training mode to learn some new moves so you can continue to level up and unlock fun content. it was a simple but ohh so effective way to keep new players engage as they learn the many ropes and systems that are in Virtua Figher.

Ultimate Showdown does not have a quest mode or any unlockable content, leaving new players little else to do, other than to go online and get killed by more experienced players... like me. Add in the fact that the game looks markedly worse than both its 2008 and 2012 counterparts and I see why the game was made free to ps+ members... it would be nothing short of robbery to pay for this. (They really want 30 bucks for this after August?)

This is a bit off topic but I want to talk about DOA: Ultimate which was released way back in 2004. Like Ulitmate Showdown that game was a third iteration, in this case being DOA2, that game had: a bonus character, new environments, a beautifully update graphic engine and packed to the gills with unlockable content. DOA:Ultimate lived up to its name... I promise your their is absolutely nothing Ultimate about 2021's Ultimate Showdown.

    (Side Notes)
A.) Awful netcode. It was acceptable back in the day but we have had so many advances in technology that the game should be running much better.
B.) Why no keyboard chat in lobbies? Why hamper the ability to communicate with each other?
C.) Seriously why does the game look so ugly? Vanessa and Sarah look like they were beaten with a shovel, and Lei Fei looks like someone drew angry eyebrows on his face while he was sleeping.

    Final Thoughts:
End of the day this is just a huge missed opportunity. After a 10 year hiatus they had a chance to revitalize the franchise and entice new players to get into the fold. But there's nothing here for them. Series Vets will enjoy playing online matches again but without any new blood this game and ultimately this franchise is doomed to die. And that's a damn shame.
