I really, really enjoyed my time with Yakuza Kiwami 2, and as a fan of the series, I’d certainly urge you to check it out. It has very few flaws, outside of some minor animation issues and the occasional cumbersome combat sequence. It also feels like a much stronger remake than even Yakuza Kiwami, which was no slouch to begin with. It also has some solid ties to both Yakuza 0 via the new elements, and pre-existing story beats that feed into the more recent Yakuza 6. So check this one out when you get a chance, you will not be disappointed.
  2. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is one of the best games ever made.
  3. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the best Yakuza game to date. Its story is gripping and has a brilliant pace, its combat is tighter and more engaging, and there’s such a varied range of sub-stories and side activities to absorb yourself in that it offers great longevity.
  4. 100
    It's a bloody brilliant game.
  5. Aug 23, 2018
The physical interactions brought forth by the Dragon Engine create brawls that feel incredibly satisfying.
  6. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a great adventure, full of details, minigames and wonderful characters, and it gets a new Goro Majima campaign for this PS4 remaster. Combat system is not as deep as in the first Kiwami, but still, it is one of the best entries in the franchise.
  7. Aug 23, 2018
A new antagonist and rippling implications of gang warfare once again drag Kazuma Kiryu back into the action. Between exploring Kamurocho and Sotenbori, ultimately players are going to find out that there's only room for one Dragon in Yakuza Kiwami 2.
  8. Sep 27, 2018
It’s an odd feeling to be back in Kamurocho after wishing a bittersweet farewell to the Dragon of Dojima. Even though Kiwami 2 doesn’t quite achieve the emotional highs of the Song of Life, the polished gameplay as well as one of the finest antagonists the series has to offer makes it a must play for Yakuza fans, whether they played the original on the PS2 or not.
  9. Sep 14, 2018
An excellent remake that brings back characters and story events with updated visuals. The weak point of Kiwami 2 is the combat system which we see as a missed opportunity.
  10. Sep 11, 2018
With improved and amazing graphics, polished gameplay and excellent additions of other games, Yakuza Kiwami 2 places as an incredible remake and one that stands out from many other recent re-released games.
  11. Sep 10, 2018
The Kiwami reissues of the older titles are exactly what fans have wanted all of these years. The fact that we’re getting them on a fast and furious basis is testament to the fact that there was a considerable market just waiting for this to happen. Yakuza Kiwami 2 is one of the best entries yet, and let us all hope that the trend of releasing these quality remasters continues on through the ones that remain. Despite Kiryu’s swan song having been sung with Yakuza 6, I would personally look forward to a few more outings through Japan in his white Travolta-esque disco suit.
  12. Sep 5, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 might not be the game to start with, but for old fans it’s a lovely trip down memory lane, and for the newcomers who have discovered the series through Yakuza 0, this title will be a true delight for you, as you get to experience how brilliant Yakuza can be when it’s at the top of its game. There have been three Yakuza games released across various platforms this year, but it’s this remake that shines as the best example of the series to date.

Based on the best ever chapter of the saga, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is an almost perfect remake in the technical side and absolutely stellar in terms of contents.
  14. Aug 31, 2018
SEGA did it best to make Yakuza Kiwami 2 appeal not only to fans of the series, but to everyone.
  15. Aug 30, 2018
The most refined and fun Yakuza experience to date, though you may feel a bit left out if you skipped the original.
  16. Aug 30, 2018
The city of Kamurocho is packed with interesting characters, fun activities and a number of excellent diversions, all backed up by a solid narrative that throws up as many surprises as it does heartwarming moments.
  17. Aug 27, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the best remake yet for the series and the absolute best way to enjoy the franchise’s second entry. It’s a must-buy for any Yakuza fan and also makes a fine starting point thanks to its thorough recap of the first game.
  18. Aug 27, 2018
Yakuza 2 was already a great game, and this version makes it even better. It's hard to pick a favorite in a series with so many titles, but this one is definitely one of our candidates.
  19. Aug 24, 2018
In yet another fantastic entry, you're treated to more fluidity in combat, a gorgeous world to explore, and so much to do outside the main story it's ridiculous.
  20. Aug 23, 2018
If you haven’t gotten into the Yakuza series, I don’t know what you are waiting for. Yakuza Kiwami 2 adds new features and perfects old ones, making it one of the funnest games on the market today.
  21. Aug 23, 2018
It’s amazing to think that we’ve gotten now four Yakuza games in the span of nearly a year and a half, and yet, Yakuza Kiwami 2 doesn’t feel old or overdone. The amount of content, and the quality of said content is staggering.
  22. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 already sits on the Pantheon for remakes and action-adventure games in general.
  23. Aug 23, 2018
Another spectacular entry in the long-running series. It brings the 2006 classic into the modern generation with gorgeous visuals, engaging combat and a melodramatic story that hits all the right notes. The sheer amount of content on offer across multiple modes and cities is an achievement in itself, made even better by the way in which Kiwami 2 unashamedly bathes players in the culture that inspired it.
  24. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 continues to stick to the franchise’s strengths, making Kiryu’s world deeper.
  25. Aug 23, 2018
Like so many games before it, Yakuza Kiwami 2 does a great job of bringing players up to speed with previous events, which makes stepping into this pleasantly dense universe easy and comfortable.
  26. Aug 23, 2018
Kiwami 2 is a perfect remake of the second installment of Yakuza, with advanced graphics and all of the new gameplay mechanics granted by the Dragon Engine. With one of the best set of side activities ever, this is a thrilling experience, a touching journey that a true Yakuza’s fan shouldn’t miss.
  27. Aug 23, 2018
We have a cast of stellar characters, the best graphics ever sported by the series, one of the most balanced combat systems, among the best side-stories ever and many new and old minigames - it will be very difficult to say no to this game.
  28. 90
A faithful return to a PS2 classic. Whether it’s taking in the town, interacting with the people, or running into random restaurants, there’s always plenty of things to stay busy doing when not playing the main campaign. Combat still feels a bit stiff, but this should be manageable and overcome with ample inventory room for health items at any rate.
  29. 90
An assuredly robust and spectacular remake of the PS2 original, Yakuza Kiwami 2 learns from the lessons of Yakuza 6 to create one of the best entries in the franchise to date.
  30. 90
With its intricately woven story and memorable characters, Yakuza 2 was already viewed as one of the best in the series. And now with improved graphics and a refined Dragon Engine, it's remake, Yakuza Kiwami 2, could be the best of them all.
  31. Aug 23, 2018
Since the release of Yakuza Kiwami, I’ve been dreaming of a remaster of Yakuza 2 to give what is easily my favourite game in the franchise the same level of modern day polish. Sega has delivered on that dream with Yakuza Kiwami 2, creating an incredible package that takes the best game in an incredible series, and makes it even better. You were already doing a disservice to yourself before by not playing Yakuza 2, but now there are no excuses. This is a must play.
  32. Aug 23, 2018
An emphatically triumphant farewell, Yakuza Kiwami 2 lives up to its “extreme” namesake. Its engrossing, dense, dark story is complemented with an engaging open world filled with wondrous activities littering its narrow streets. Taking the best parts of its franchise and stuffing it all into a rich, rewarding experience, minor game engine flaws cannot overshadow the dragon within.
  33. Aug 23, 2018
In a time where the expectation of the video game remake is constantly changing, Kiwami 2 proves to be one of the best ones out there by imbuing its systems with new life and adding a ridiculous amount of compelling content. It speaks to the strength of both Kiwami 2 and Yakuza as a whole that despite spending endless hours in Kamurocho, I can’t wait for the next opportunity to return and backhand some delinquent scum through the glass window of a convenience store.
  34. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is such a fun, wild, and weird creature that it feels almost like fanservice.
  35. 90
Yakuza Kiwami 2 offers the best Yakuza experience money can currently buy, not to mention a story that wouldn't seem out of place in an old Kinji Fukasaku flick.
  36. Aug 30, 2018
Exciting Japanese thriller in a game world full of convincing characters, the action adventure and brawler gameplay is flawless.
  37. Sep 3, 2018
It does not happen often that a remake is better than the original, but it is the case with Yakuza Kiwami 2. The plot twists are amazing, and the same goes for storytelling, characters, sidequests and the fighting system of this game.
  38. Sep 19, 2018
Overall, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is one of the best entries in the franchise. It's the technically most advanced and includes many improvements that significantly enhance the experience while also telling a gripping and satisfying story. It's not perfect, with a sometimes slow progression system and a few hit-and-miss additions in the side content. Some fun additions from previous iterations could've made Kiwami 2 even more special.
  39. Sep 24, 2018
Minor flaws aside, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a great reimagining, reworked with love and pride by a team who clearly understand what makes their games shine. Even though there are loads of Kiryu’s adventures to choose from at this point, this one stands apart as one of the best. It may not dethrone 0 as the definitive Yakuza experience, but it’s still an excellent entry in its own right and has essentially become the gold standard by which all remakes should be measured.
  40. Sep 15, 2018
Emotional side quests, engaging combat, and a dramatic plot combine to make Yakuza Kiwami 2 another solid addition to the franchise.
  41. Sep 3, 2018
A remake of a pretty dated game which turns out very well. The story remains fantastic, especially with the addition of some new scenes. The mini games never fail to be funny either. This remake is a prime example of how to do a remake and Yakuza fans and newcomers alike can blindly purchase this game.
  42. Aug 28, 2018
Mechanically, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the best offering in the entire series. With the abundance of fun distractions, quirky side stories, break-neck and brutal combat, and the franchise's signature dark, if sometimes convoluted story, newcomers and veterans are in for a real treat.
  43. Aug 28, 2018
Another excellent reinterpretation of one of the best Sega franchises nowadays. A real varied, engaging, fun and captivating action adventure game.
  44. Aug 23, 2018
A story of loyalty and honor, it is peerless in the crime fiction genre. The gameplay is so varied and exhaustive even if you tend to simply solve all your problems with your fists. There are some kinks to work out about how it deals with its more lascivious content, but what this game does well, it does so well that all I want to do is get right back in to see what I missed.
  45. Aug 23, 2018
This game easily defeats Yakuza 6. Sublime storytelling and great pacing. It's tragedy and comedy all in one.
  46. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is an outstanding remake which takes the original game and revolutionizes its visuals by using new generation assets and the latest version of the Dragon Engine, in order to deliver incredibly rich locations, awesome characters and a compelling story.
  47. Aug 23, 2018
Graphics-wise, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the best in the franchise so far, but it's not only the Dragon Engine that shines: an array of mini-games, an amazing campaign and improved combat system are the stars of the show.
  48. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is perfect for anyone looking to experience the best of the early Yakuza titles without sacrificing the refined gameplay mechanics and visuals.
  49. Aug 23, 2018
The battle of the Two Dragons is one of the better stories of the series, though, and you won’t be disappointed with all the upgrades that make this essentially a new game from the original Yakuza 2 in 2006 – including tons of new content and cut-scenes. If you’ve never played a Yakuza game, however, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a great place to start, as the game offers an option to catch up on the story so far. If you have a Yen for more classic Yakuza fighting action, Kiryu’s latest saga has all the right moves.

A familiar but loving stroll (and brawl) down memory lane for one of the series' best entries. [Oct 2018, p.64]

    Dec 4, 2018
Not having played Yakuza 6 yet, at first I was disappointed with the Dragon engine, which offers only painful 30 frames per second. New tech has its advantages though, as you may enter most of shops, restaurants etc. without annoying loading, which is a significant step forward from the first Kiwami, as are the physics engine, animation system and enhanced control over combat. Overall it is a very good game, but not as brilliant as Yakuza 0, especially in terms of the story. [10/2018, p.70]
  52. Aug 26, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a very good remaster with vastly improved graphics thanks to the Dragon Engine. We would have loved an improved OST and more impact on Kazuma's punches, but overall we highly recommend this game.
  53. Aug 26, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a beautiful remake of the second part. If you like the franchise with all its weird antics, you will love this game. It offers you the elements only Yakuza can give you, but there are a few downsides. Still, you must play this game.
  54. Aug 24, 2018
Kiwami 2 is the best example of reviving the past I could hope for.
  55. Aug 23, 2018
Overall, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a great recreation of the original title. The core narrative is kept intact and the new translations add to the greater experience. Additional mini-games make for a great way to waste time and Majima’s scenario, while new, didn’t feel like an unwelcome addition. For those who are returning or veterans of the series, they’ll have more to explore and more to do and discover with the new additions. And for new players who are just getting their hands on this classic? They'll be able to experience the story of Yakuza 2 in a new and more accessible way.
  56. Aug 23, 2018
Its storyline is gripping, its weapons-heavy fighting system accommodates no shortage of spectacle, and it serves up plenty of enjoyable side activities – both mini and macro – to divert to or return for after the story wraps. Yakuza 0 may still be the high watermark for the series on the PS4, but Yakuza Kiwami 2 isn’t too far behind.
  57. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza is an exemplary, if flawed series that does an incredible job of steeping you in contemporary Japanese-style crime drama, and establishing an evocative sense of place. Yakuza Kiwami 2 is an excellent example of the series at its best, coupling its most memorable stories and characters with its most sophisticated mechanics yet.
  58. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is clearly the update Yakuza 2 deserved. The very talented people over at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios recreated the riveting Yakuza 2 plot while adding new side quests and activities. Even if a couple of elements from the original game are now missing, Kiwami 2 has more than enough content to keep players glued to their screens. It must also be noted that the Dragon Engine looks and runs better than it did in Yakuza 6. All in all, Kiwami 2 another great Yakuza game that fans of the series should not miss.
  59. Aug 23, 2018
Adding to a growing list of great PS4 remakes, Yakuza: Kiwami 2 is up there with the best games in SEGA's series. While PS2-era design does rear its ugly head now and again, another brilliantly dramatic story steals the spotlight. Throw in some superb optional content, and you've got a prime Yakuza package that's ultimately very difficult to fault.

This remake is a welcome and impressive return, but it makes it clearer than ever that next time Yakuza struts into town, it needs a fresh set of threads. [Issue#153, p.81]
  61. Aug 31, 2018
Fans of Kiryu's crazy adventures will love Yakuza Kiwami 2 as it's full of over-the-top action and ridiculous scenarios. Even with its somewhat disappointing combat and story, it's a must-have for anyone who loves action games.
  62. Aug 29, 2018
A decent remake of the best Yakuza episode in terms of storytelling.
  63. Aug 24, 2018
Kiwami 2 is best thought of as remake masquerading as an encore. More separation may have allowed it to better stand out and ease Yakuza’s encroaching sense of repetition. It’s impossible to deny the charm of its weird idiosyncrasies and the power of its serpentine drama. Kiwami 2 hits the modern Yakuza standard and, with any reasonable hope, breaks it for good. It also, for better or for worse, will finally allow people to cherish Yakuza 2 outside of its legendary tiger battle.
  64. Aug 23, 2018
Maybe certain aspects could have been tweaked to be more faithful to the source material, but the worst thing that could happen is you end up wanting to play the original to see the changes firsthand. That isn't such a terrible outcome.

It's tricky to pick dourly over the faults in a game that refuses to take itself seriously, even when the fate of Japan itself is at stake. [Nov 2018, p.114]
  66. Sep 7, 2018
Punches fly faster this time around, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 re-introduces features from earlier games, like a wider moveset and the ability to store weapons.
  67. Aug 27, 2018
Yakuza Kiwami 2 won't make those who haven't clicked with the series yet a believer, but for fans, it's well worth the journey if you don't mind retreading some familiar ground. While the slow middle and Majima side campaign are disappointing, Kiwami 2 is still another solid entry in the Yakuza canon.
  68. Aug 23, 2018
Switching between Kamurocho and Sotenbori with there being so much to do means the action never gets stale, and the new content offers some variety that will spice things up even for people who know Yakuza 2 inside out. That said, the features that have been cut from the original are greatly missed, and the new songs just don't have the same impact as the old ones do, most of the time. It's still definitely worth a play-through if a fan of the series (or even if only recently getting into it), but it's difficult to call it the definitive version of Yakuza 2.
  69. Aug 24, 2018
Just like a show, the second season has to contend with the apparent success of its predecessor, and it’s clear that the writers on Yakuza 2 may not have known how to extend that deeply personal tale for another 40 hours.

Even a remake of perhaps the weakest Yakuza game in the series is hands-down a fantastic trip worth taking. Only skip it if you haven’t finished Yakuza 0 and Kiwami yet.
  2. Aug 23, 2018
Yakuza continues its good run with a fine - if a little lumpy - retread of a modern classic.
  3. Aug 29, 2018
It leverages a state-of-the-art engine to present a story that holds up, with gameplay refined over a dozen years. It makes its debut on a console that makes it easy to share the moments that can really only come from this series.

In my personal opinion, the story is the best of all the ones that I've played and, although more streamlined when compared to Zero and Kiwami, I felt the combat experience to be the most responsive yet (you "feel" every punch and kick you throw during battles). Exploration is also even more rewarding this time, with a perfect mix between new attractions and the revamped fan-favorites that have been a staple of the series. Because of its accessibility, I'd say this is certainly a Yakuza not only for long-time fans of the series, but also for newcomers alike. Full Review »
