The PlayStation 5 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the best in the bunch. It tells a solid campaign with branching narrative choices, contains some of the best visuals that you’ve seen on a system not called ‘PC’, and it has some good, new faces on the multiplayer scene. Is it all perfect? Not at all, but it’s a good way for Call of Duty to start on the next generation of consoles.

Black Ops is back and darker than ever. With a rich story and plenty of super-spy moments, this game keeps you gripping down on your controller. Always going to be compared to past titles, this iteration stands up to the challenge and delivers a whole new experience on what a Call of Duty title should be

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a solid entry in the blockbuster franchise that looks stunning on next-gen consoles. While its campaign fails to deliver on its potential, it still takes you on a thrilling tale of explosive espionage as you uncover the true identity of Perseus. Combine this with an old-school multiplayer component and expanded Zombies mode and you’ve got a shooter experience I can easily recommend.

Thankfully, a few of the early bugs were ironed out of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and subsequent season passes have patched up modes and maps that were lacking. The campaign is genuinely intriguing but may not appeal to those who just want to run and gun. Zombies and Multiplayer modes are plentiful and there should be something for everyone to thoroughly enjoy. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War should be used as the poster child for PlayStation 5's DualSense controller which has been put to full use for an immersive experience. Casual players will be somewhat put off by the sheer storage space required to fully experience everything that is on offer, especially given that SSD capacity is this generation's gold dust, but Call of Duty die-hards will most likely overlook this.

Call of Duty has been an annual franchise for 15 years, but this year feels particularly unnecessary because Warzone and Modern Warfare continue to thrive. It’s a solid game, but with limited maps and a campaign that fizzles out, it’s a hard sell for players already committed to where they are. As the seasons continue, Cold War could certainly improve, but for now, it isn’t an essential purchase.

What I didn’t expect from the new Call of Duty was downtime, and the suggestion, at least in the first half, that guns, while great for going in blazing, can provide just as potent a thrill when holstered.

Despite its enjoyable campaign, Black Ops Cold War feels like an anachronistic package. The era of one game containing three completely disparate modes feels so long ago in the age of Warzone.

I will start of by saying this: I only play this game for the online multiplayer, meaning I have no experience with the campaign.

This is my first Call Of Duty game I’ve spent lots time playing and I need to say: I am not disappointed. I played a couple matches on Modern Warfare but I was always left feeling really disappointed, mainly with the bland maps and layouts. With Cold War, I find myself enjoying the maps thoroughly, with even the worst maps still being enjoyable. Maps such as The Pines and the updated Miami (Miami Strike) are welcome additions. Killing someone in one area of The Pines then running through the hallways to shoot another is exciting. Miami Strike is an improved Miami, in a smaller space that enables fighting. I have to say that the map that didn’t land for me at all was Satellite, and even then I still find enjoyment while playing on it. We see the return of incredible maps as well such as Nuketown (in the form of Nuketown ‘84) which makes me more interested in playing previous instalments. There are many incredible game modes to play on these maps as well, including a personal favourite: Search And Destroy. Every game feels new and exciting, while allowing me to consistently improve. The main reason I didn’t give this game a 10/10 however, is the fact that the game often freezes and lags, even when my internet connection is perfect. It does often get in the way of fully enjoying the game to it’s potential. This game was an excellent introduction into the world of Call Of Duty for me, making me excited for future games in the franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fun like the rest. Gameplay feels a bit on the simpler side compared to the last installment. This is either a positive or negative depending on the players preference.

There's only 8 maps, a few of them I hate or feel like they were previously stolen or heavily influenced from another COD title. Guns are fine overall. There were balancing issues with the Mp5 but it was recently nerf.

Perks are a pretty bland. I think this was a developer's choice to slow down the game play.
    Killstreaks are over done either.
There's a new mode "Fireteam - Dirty Bomb" and perhaps I don't have the write to say this, but I only played it one time, and it's basically TDM with Warzone mechanics. It felt like a mess. Fights are intense and long but after so many minutes, people were just parachuting in the same building over and over. It needs a lot of work, but maybe it can get there. Ground War has 3 maps. One of them is a ship that either hated or love and you can just report there being only 2.

A strong pro that isn't talked about. I've watch videos about how the attachments work and users are claiming the extra stats found on the weapon detail accurate. This makes for a more enjoyable experience when building your kit. It's still fun to mix and match. My domination build often entails a double smoke/double semtex to help hold points.

This game doesn't either too significant, just another COD title.

Hi guys, I'm from Russia and my negative review is not due to Russophobia present in the game.
I even liked the gameplay and storyline of the company.
But! In multiplayer ... optimization of the battlefield 4 level game on ps3. I play with a sniper rifle in multiplayer mode, with each aiming, textures fall in x10 resolution, freezes appear the same at every aim and every death. Well, just like that. The game freezes, constantly loads textures, AND LIKE SNIPER RIFLE DOES NOT KILL FROM THE FIRST SHOT!
Go through the company, don't even poke your nose into the network game. The score is above zero only because of the single player.

It is apparent that with every passing year they charge you more and sell you less of a game. It is unfinished and STILL suffers from the same issues COD has always suffered with. Connection issues that make it more a battle of internet providers than of skill etc etc etc. A game that sells as much as COD shouldnt have these problems. It certainly should not be released unfinished. If call of effing duty is allowed to release unfinished then gaming is in deep trouble. Stop buying these games. Stop supporting it. Games-as-service needs to go. If we continue to send money towards these games then we will deserve everything we get. Stop funding your own exploitation. Expand
