Seriously? Black washing? I am a Dane and I don't one bit appreciate that nor would anyone like me. How about you make original black characters instead of being lazy and racist? The only thing as annoying as the woke trash is the endless puzzles. This was not much fun to play but I did see it through. It took a lot, though.

    > Movements are cumbersome, like driving a supertanker in a narrow corridor with a torticollis.

    > RPG elements are infuriating: you keep smashing ginormous treasure troves only to pick up a sad little sack of coins or a puny horn you're hesitating to decide where it should go in your body. When using multiple of them you feel better. I don't want to analyze this further.

    > The camera in combats insists on showing you the marvels of the cardboard decorations carefully crafted by the hundreds of artists the studio hired, all the while some generic variation of an enemy is hammering you joyously from behind.

    > The locking system is such a joke you might think you'd get better results if you asked your grandma to count jumping fleas. Oh it's there, ah no wait it jumped, I lost it. Too bad for you I guess, you've just sent your carefully built turbo-attack on a rock than doesn't even budge a millimeter.

    > There are puzzles and mysteries to solve. The only problem is that every single damn talking NPC around you insists to spoil you within the 5 seconds it takes to realize you're in front of a puzzle. Either this or you don't have the tool to solve this and you will have to navigate that whole entire level once again when you get finally get it - provided you remember where these puzzles are since the map is as useless as napkin with random signs scribbled it.

    > Apparently there's a story. Sure. Everyone had children with everyone, now the kids are becoming annoying and particularly Atreus, so everyone is cranky. Kratos being alone again is particularly in a bad mood, since he can't enjoy relaxing with Venus like he did before to forget he massacred his whole family, and has instead to travel half-naked in the snow with bears and bearded idiots to have his silly son finally shut up.

And some people dare to compare this overproduced boomer game to a monument like Elden Ring? Not that Elden Ring does everything right far from it, but it's still comparing a vacation vlog to a Martin Scorsese movie.

As always, your mileage may vary. Some may like it. If you're a retrogamer with bad glasses and memory for instance.

I gave it a 3 because of the mysophobiac dwarf, but that's the only creative thing in this game.

Ragnarok could be the same wonderful, top quality game as the 2018 GOW. But it’s not.
    - boring, unskippable cutscenes lasting several hours in total;
    - playing as Atreus is boring, cringe, and uneventful. I don’t give about a goddamn teenager rebellion – just give me God of War, you can kill Atreus and make all this about vengeance for all I care, but don’t force me to play a stupid kid.

Why Santa Monica thought this was a good idea is beyond me;
    - relatively boring story, Kratos and Atreus don’t know what to do, they go from point A to point B without any plan or concept other than “Ragnarok is coming and we gotta stop Odin”.
GOW Ragnarok is only a shell or a shadow of its predecessor. Technically it’s good – the fighting system is as good as in the previous game or even better. But that’s it. It’s just a big DLC.

God of War Ragnarok, as the fifth original version of the franchise and the second game based on the mythology of the North, as well as the ending of the mythology of the North, had a very heavy responsibility, and despite the pressures such as the release time and the one-year delay, the final result is so high-quality and attractive. Santa Monica should be appreciated

Loved every second of it, and it will certainly be a part of me for as long as I live. I have no words, I’m almost brought to tears at the thought that it ended, at the thought of what ended, at the thought that I will never experience it for the first time again, at the thought of the farewells. This game basically takes everything that worked with its predecessor and made all of it better. The only thing I would say isn't as good as the first game is the story because it isn't as focused, but even then it introduces you to far more areas of the map and the end has far more spectacle - 9.5/10

God of war Ragnarok is a superb game. Although I must say the first was a bit better. I didn't understand why they made some story decisions like pokeball giant stuff, Surtur and Sinmara, and Odin's mask that was useless in the end. The story in the first game was so perfectly crafted, the story in the second was just a good story but was hard to exceed the first. Enemy variety even if it was increased compared to the first didn't really feel a lot better you know, I hoped at least to make the enemies specific in some areas but after they would introduce a new native enemy in a realm they would just casually add it later in another realm. The acting and OST are so well done holy hell, really an amazing performance from the cast. Great game, for me this was the Game of the Year of 2022.

It's arguably one of the best linear story games ever made. Still, Ragnarök is by definition no better than its predecessor from 2018. The story feels less compact, intimate and focused due to the many perspectives. The gameplay isn’t varied despite the small tweaks and because of this the gameplay loop sooner or later gets a little in the way of excitement. You can clearly see when you are in an 'arena' to, again, overcome the next button smash encounter. Nevertheless, it remains special that it is precisely in this game that human emotions are portrayed so well. Every character feels incredibly human, it almost looks like a movie adaptation of a mythological script. Even kratos will face and show his emotions.

It is clear that Santa Monica has created unforgettable boss battles, characters and conversations. Although the story felt too divided, which resulted in loss of interest in some segments of the story, it still feels I missed much within it because there is so much to take in. It makes sense to play the story again or explore all the side activities in the world to understand this adventure even more. One thing is certain; God of War Ragnarök fires a lot of epic moments at you in the 20 hour journey through the 9 realms.

    Pros:
    - Characters (Odin in particular)
    - Voice acting
    - Bombastic experience
    - Story details
    - Art design
    - Sound design/Sound track

    Cons:
    - Less focussed story than it’s predecessor.
    - Design of the menu’s. It is to difficult to understand all the possibilities for the casual gamer/ non GOW fan

The UX design is ABSOLUTELY the number 1 reason this didn't win game of the year.

Guys, when you release this for PC can you please sort out the UX design. Also, the menu system and the excessive stats and upgrades could do with being reworked. This game is so damn confusing in that department.

Kratos´s and Freya´s character arcs aren´t great. The latter is too generic and fast paced, the former is messy at worst and did something pretty outrageous considering what went on the first game and who he is. Gameplay isn´t much of an improvement on 2018, the enemy variety is the one thing that prevents it from being boring for someone who played a lot of the last game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While the game is good and has its amazing moments, it lacks in story, combat and UI. Biggest problem I had was the directionless and unfocused story. This is my biggest problem with the game.

    Characters:
Aatreus goes from wanting war to not wanting it to wanting it again for several times. While there is reason for it, the game doesnt let Aatreus sit with reason long enough to earn the change, specially when he changes his mind after short time. Biggest offender is when Brok dies, Aatreus talks about he wouldnt wanted war if this was the consequences of it, yet after creation of Ragnarok (Surtr) he start talking about how war is needed again.
Most jarring change is Sif who does complete 180 without any good reason that is told in game.
Ragnarok (Surtr) got in the way instead and Freyr died of unnecessary death bcs of it.

    Story:
Story feels all over the place. I never understood what Kratos wanted to do, felt like he was doing what everyone told him to do. Which made the game like bunch of storys mushed together.
Some parts where too long and unnecessary but other too short.

For gods sake just talk. Lot of the problem comes from charcters not talking trough it. It is cheap way to make artificial conflict.

    Combat:
Mob enemies has too much health, it just takes too long to kill them. They are also faster and stagger much less than the playable charcters.

    Companions doesnt do much.

Bosses didnt have much of spectacle like 2018 had.

    UI and the gameplay:
UI is a mess and its annoying to navigate through it. When you start your save file your placement is reset to start of mini area, while not that bad it is definitely annoying.

I mean almost every enemy explode when they die, they all have missile attack and unbreakable move and it felt poor, very poor compared to the first game. I also didn't care about the godzillion runes or useless items. The menu screen is really ugly and side-quests, lore and exploring too rigid. I played the first one twice and this one I will skip chests, some side-quests, didn't care about reading stuff and will not play it again. Up until that moment, the sense of wonder, exploration and a compelling story with nuanced characters was almost flawless.

Afterwards, we see quite a bit deus ex mahina moments and unmotivated behavior by characters, for example a pointless giant battle that lacks setup and, quite frankly, motivation for the characters.

It felt a bit like a let-down, following the tear-inducing and touching end of the first game, as if the directors had simply capped the series with a spare cliche ending from the box of big production games they kept in the closet.

The game explores the complexities of this relationship in a way that is simply beautiful. Kratos, a character known for his brutal nature, is forced to confront his past and come to terms with his own mortality. Along the way, he learns how to be an amazing father to his son, and the bond that develops between them is both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

The game's music (OST) is nothing short of amazing, with soaring orchestral pieces that perfectly complement the game's emotional themes. The gameplay sounds are also top-notch, immersing players in a world that feels alive with sound. The clashing of weapons, the crunch of snow underfoot, and the roar of giants all serve to create a sense of immersion that is simply awesome.

But what truly sets God of War: Ragnarök apart is how it manages to weave these emotional themes into a game that is also packed with thrilling combat and stunning visuals. The action sequences are nothing short of breathtaking, with the game's combat mechanics feeling tighter and more polished than ever before. Players will find themselves immersed in epic battles against some of the most iconic figures from Norse mythology, each one a thrilling and memorable experience.

Overall, God of War: Ragnarök is a game that fires on all cylinders. Its stunning visuals, incredible combat, unforgettable story, and beautiful music all come together to create an experience that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. This game is a true masterpiece that every gamer owes it to themselves to experience. After completing this unforgettable journey, players will undoubtedly be left with a deep sense of emotional resonance that will stay with them long after the credits have rolled.

If you dont care to make something enjoyable to play, and just want to tell a story, just make a movie next time. Youtube is making playing sony's games irrelevant. Just watch someone playing and save your money. Looks like another assassins cringe series is born. And kratos have a severe case of amnesia as he forgot everything he learned from the previous game. Ragnarok delivered all expectations and more. It is an innovation in the game industry for how stories can be told and will forever change the expectations audiences will have in future AAA games.

The maturity in the writing of the story and the characters was the last thing I expected to be able leap forward from God of War 2018. The characters and the story are both written so intelligently and empathetically that there are even lessons you can learn from it. The graphics has the same effect that recent PS5 releases such as Last of Us Part 1 has in that it is so beautiful your brain cannot even completely process it. The soundtrack can barely be called a video game soundtrack because it is essentially scored like a film and in the most epic and emotional way that will take you from hyped to being in tears.

Everything in Ragnarok combined gives you an experience that you can compare to the greatest blockbusters in movie history. If God of War Ragnarok was a film, it would still sit next to my favourites.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I waited for this title the moment God of War (2018) came out. Before buying it I knew this game was going to be perfect, and my expectations were high. Of course, it shattered them. Within the first hour, the game is already trying to invoke tears into my eyes with the death of Atreus' wolf. Every part of this game is compelling. You can tell other people agree when over 10% of the people who played it have the platinum. There's always something to do, even when it can get tedious sometimes. My only problem with it was the fact that every time I play this, it overheats my PS5. Regardless if i wipe it down or lay it vertical. This may be a design flaw itself or the game is so intricate that even the 5th generation of console can't handle it. All around, this game is a must play and Santa Monica has developed a masterpiece. Expand

However, I'm only giving my rating for GOWR a 9, because even with the beautiful storytelling and new character dynamics, the enemies and puzzles are a total pain in the ass. Some bosses don't feel like fun (Double Dreki & Double Soul Eater bosses), and there are moments in the game where enemies show up out of nowhere for no reason. And Sigil Puzzles..... **** SUCK. I'm sorry, but whoever came up with these didn't want players to have a challenge, but a reason to throw their computer or controller out the goddamn window. But, I can overlook all that and still see GOWR as a beautiful and much-needed installment in the GOW franchise. (Also Alfheim still sucks ass 4 years later lmao) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. God of War Ragnarok was a game that completely sold me in the beginning but later lost me a bit towards the end. The whole game felt like trying to cram in every story element meant for 3 games into one game. As the game progressed, it was rushed and came to an unsatisfying conclusion to the Norse saga.

While outstanding, the gameplay is still almost the same as the 2018 version, and although the devs mentioned that they will keep the same engine, it would've been nice with upgraded gimmicks of puzzles, attacks, etc. However, the gameplay is not much of an issue since the gameplay for God of War 2018 was good, and bringing something good into another thing remains the same.

The most important reason why I gave my score is because of the story. For a game adapted from Norse mythology, the story is very small and lacks the variety of the original myth and the number of characters. We only see a handful of Norse gods and we get to fight only three of them. The Ragnarok event is also underwhelming. Although the story gives a reasonable excuse as to why it ended so quickly, it could have stretched out the literal war against the Aesir. If the game took some of the minutes given to Iron Wood and put them into Ragnarok, it could've saved it from being this underwhelming.

In conclusion, while the game aspect of God of War Ragnarok was great, the story and the pacing really made the experience very mediocre. With the lack of pacing and good storytelling, this game makes the Norse saga as a whole more of a long DLC of 2018 than anything. I would've greatly preferred this saga be a trilogy than a duology and I expect this series to do so in the next saga.

The game's side quests were also very good; most quests had as much depth and world building as the main story, which is good. Although there are one or two side quests that are just you running around finding something but that is my only real complaint with the game. One of the best parts was the beautiful environments that you could see around all nine of the Norse realms from the deserts of Alfheim to the jungles of vanaheim all the realms are special in their own way. Another thing I liked was the villains of the game. At one point I ended up somewhat sympathizing with the villains. But just a bit later the game made me feel bad for sympathizing with the villains by showing me how horrible people they were. And even after the main story was finished I kept on coming back to find out more about the story and explore all nine realms And I might even 100% the game later on. SPOILERS BELLOW (potentially)

It's unbelievable how someone green lights a weak story like that to a blockbuster powerhouse game as GoW. No god acts like they're immortal mytholocgical beings, all of them sounds and acts like the average north american you see in a B movie. Childish and shallow dialogues, let alone motivations. Freyr is a lowly guerrilla leader that uses **** explosives (!?) to fight undying asgardian einherjars.
Odin is nothing more than a common american gangster.
Thor is a crying drunk depressed because (?) *reasons*
And the final battle, omg, motivated by vengeance - as Kratos himself states multiple times in the 5 minutes before going to to war - for the recently murdered main character. After 30 hs of gameplay, the final battle motivation is the death of our buddy that just died for no reason at all. Almost everything that happened in the 30 previous hours is simply a inconsequential filler.

On the gameplay side, the scores down the board are excellent. The combat is fast-paced, challenging, and rewarding. The sense of discovery as you explore each of the worlds is fantastic. The storyline is epic, and the characters are interesting, especially Thor and Odin. It took me 72 hours on Give Me God of War difficulty to do everything, so it's also reasonably lengthy.

There are two reasons Ragnarok isn't 10/10. First, it's a retread of old ground that seems familiar. The gameplay is superb, but it's all something we've seen before.

The second reason I can't give it the highest score is that GoW:Ragnarok has contracted a severe case of JRPG-itis for a lack of a better term. The game has way too many drawn-out cutscenes that are supposed to be moving, but end up being melodramatic in the extreme and very wordy, breaching the etiquette of showing and not telling. I'm not against wordy, but I am when it's mostly just to convey mawkish sentiment and after-school special preaching. There's an entire chapter where Atreus has a pseudo-romantic adventure which was cringy. The nuanced storytelling and beautifully realized subtle relationship between Kratos' stoicism and Atreus' idealism of the first game has been replaced with cheap moralizing and tedious hand-wringing and "I love you" monologs. Characters can't stop stop blubbering, and everyone has some secret tragedy that they just have to blurt out like a Lifetime movie in a moment of vulnerability. This is manipulative hack-writing 101, and the shift in tone is inappropriate for a God of War game.

You could tie yourself in knots trying to make sense of his actions and motivations if you were in a forgiving mood, but the game fails to illustrate him as a rational actor. A central plot tension coming from a totally artificial reluctance from one character to explain what he's doing, "It's... complicated" *sigh*. New additions to Kratos' posse grate. The smart alec squirrel wandered out of a forgotten kids show, and the dwarf with the caricatured Southern American accent jars with the world. Kratos has never been funnier, with the writers and Christopher Judge demonstrating a real understanding of the character and using that for laughs that don't take you out of the story, but everyone else is a trite Joss Whedon quip machine.

Level design and traversal are the games weakest areas. The designers have saddled Kratos with a serious case of White Boys Can't Jump. You'll feel incredibly restricted in how you traverse the environment in a way that isn't true to the character. The chest is right there, but this gap isn't programmed to allow a jump, sorry. The game feels on rails and the issue becomes more apparent as you revisit areas you've since cleared of enemies and have to slowly squeeze through gaps or shimmy across ledges while the next corridor loads. Completionists in particular are in for tedium.

Combat has enough satisfying depth to reward high skill players, but the RPG elements are a distraction with few making a meaningful addition to combat.

GOTY. Loved it and platinumed it. It was even better than 2016, which is also one of my favorite games of all time.

This is a clunky action game where common enemies are threatening damage sponges for you, the god of war. Compared to the previous God of War games this is a step up in graphics and polish, but a huge step back in gameplay and story. I returned it to the library after several hours.

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.

The combat is beefy enough to carry you through the slower stretches, but even when you're lopping heads off dragons it can feel like what you're really killing is time. [Issue#379, p.100]
