Developing a new title in the sports genre every year and improving at the same time is a real challenge for any company, but Visual Concepts managed to create a true 9th generation experience with NBA 2K23, offering solid visuals, stunning animations and tons of content while staying loyal to simulation gameplay. It is safe to say that the king is back.

NBA 2K23 does a killer job of opening the floor to those that are new to the franchise, or those returning for their umpteenth time. With gorgeous visuals that help solidify this as one of the best-looking games of the generation so far, to controls that let you feel like a pro, there's very little to complain about here.

NBA 2K23 at its core is the same great experience that players enjoy each and every year, while also still mired by the unpleasant microtransactions for your MyPlayer. This year's return of the Jordan Challenge, however, takes the game to new heights that it has not felt for a number of years now thanks to the level of authenticity found in the presentation and gameplay surrounding the GOAT Michael Jordan.

NBA 2K23 is still the best possible product for basketball fans and the best thing you can ask for in a sports simulation game. The additions of historical content are jaw-dropping and have clearly received plenty of love. However, the online experience that makes the game so long lasting is highly compromised by the absurd need to spend even more to stay in the competition.

I would recommend NBA 2K23 for its sheer breadth of material and the fact that it really tries to be a basketball universe unto itself (hence the massive file size). It's certainly not perfect, as I still keep running into odd glitches now and then, and even some strange things that carry over from the last game (Do I really have to keep walking through the Dallas Mavericks shootaround to get to my guys? Why is that still a thing?), but it is and shall likely always be the sports game I play almost every day, no matter what time of year it actually is — even when the fans tell me I stink.

Without a focus on MJ’s career, 2K23 doesn’t offer too much more than last year’s iteration. It’s a serviceable experience for newcomers and pros alike, it’s just a damn shame it’s becoming more and more a marketing tool than a game. What concerns me is, where do they go from here?

Old gameplay mechanics and some minor innovations are not guaranteeing that this series is going in the right direction. Sports games and real money microtransaction don't mix well. Zero respect for the time of the players that don't have fat wallets.

Great AI, Stamina bar and better animations, with better shooting experience.

However, I have to say that this year it was not loyal to its consumers. NBA2k23 just isn't a dialed copy of last year's game because of Jordan's added content. In gameplay, they gave a very discreet slap. Otherwise, it's last year's version with only updated menus. I expected much more! Next year, I don't know if I'll venture with pre-sales, because I'm tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. Expand

I have to give this game a similar rating to what I gave to Gran Turismo 7, except this time it's on me for getting my hopes up.

To be fair, I had no intent of buying this game, but there was a deal where it was packaged with NBA league pass, so I pulled the trigger.

This game is a solid basketball simulation, though the franchise mode can move more slowly than you would hope. I enjoyed bringing a franchise through the past with knowledge of which players would be great. It was a fun fantasy.

MyPlayer mode is slow and grindy with a bunch of BS that you really don't want to do. I just wanted to hoop, and it was making me chase down sponsors and do fashions shows and a bunch of stuff that isn't basketball.

MyTeam is what it is. You know what you're getting with that.

My real issue is the size of the install. It was more than 100 GB. I wound up uninstalling so that I could actually play games that I wanted to play. I had been playing an occasional game, but not anymore.

PlayStation 5 Review: Please don’t waste money on this game like I did. This game is pretty much like a hole in a wall being fixed with tape and getting a new coat of paint. The obvious problem is 2ks greed, cheating cpu(they can make any shot they want even as a 40 ovr no badges with all the sliders at 0 etc), inconsistent gameplay( the ball will literally be touching your hand but someone online or offline just runs past you and scores but when you try to do the same they just snatch it from you) and them not giving af about the people that work their a** off to purchase the game/vc( they only incentivize sweats) yea I can get “good” but when i or other are just playing the game to have some sort of enjoyment or unwind from a long day why tf should I be good at the game just to have fun?. I’m done with 2k I just can’t deal with their bs anymore I’m done giving them my money. There needs to be competition for this franchise to even think about stepping up their game but sadly there probably won’t be any in the near future. Hopefully this review saves you time and money please do not buy this game. Expand
