Mar 9, 2023It didn't take me long to realise how special Octopath Traveler 2 is. It is a game that has so much to do and explore, but never feels overwhelming or watered down in any way. Featuring one of the best turn-based combat systems I've ever encountered, alongside an emotional and deeply connecting narrative on all fronts, Octopath Traveler 2 is truly a monumental achievement that confidently stands among some of the genre's finest entries.
Mar 20, 2023As a fan of JRPGs, Octopath Traveler II shines as an excellent classic JRPG experience for the PS5. It is a very easy recommendation for PS5 owners wanting a good JRPG while they wait for Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters to make their way to next-gen consoles. If you’re a PS5 owner and are curious about JRPGs, Octopath Traveler II works as a great entry point into the genre, giving some players a taste of party management, mild grind, and incredible storytelling. I’d caution some newer players unfamiliar with the genre to consider using a guide, but the combat is easy enough to pick up and play without feeling like a text guide is required.
Feb 17, 2023Octopath Traveler II will correct what was not convincing in the first game. Although the game is very close to what has already been seen, it is still an excellent JRPG. Now we have new mechanics that make it a more strategic game. The interaction between characters is much better because of how they relate to each other. If you liked the first game, you'll love this one for sure.
Apr 7, 2023Octopath Traveler II is amazing in every way, yet tarnished by the fact that it is a sequel to an excellent title, which brings next to no improvements to the table. Charming graphics, stunning music and great stories still make this a great experience. Just one bit less surprising than the original was five years ago.
Feb 22, 2023Octopath Traveler II is a solid JRPG that shines beyond its nostalgic tricks. With fantastic storytelling, beautiful visuals, an exceptional soundtrack, and engaging combat mechanics, the game delivers 8 memorable journeys. While it stays in line with its predecessor, Team Asano and Acquire understood the areas of improvement and worked to deliver a great experience.
Mar 16, 2023Another great nostalgia trip to the time of the pixelated JRPGs that doesn't bring many new things, neither to the Octopath series nor to this long-lived genre, but it still introduces us to eight unique characters and stories that you shouldn't miss - if you have 100 hours to spare.
Edge MagazineMar 24, 2023It's hard not to think how much more memorable and rewarding it would have been had the writers made the effort to intertwine these stories from the outset, instead of making its characters spend so much of their journey walking in parallel. [Issue#383, p.108]

On the other side, we have some flaws that makes the game to not be perfect, the main jobs are the same as the previous game, the random battles can be annoying at some points, and although cross stories are a good addition, it isn't enough to fully fix the problem of relationships between characters… Expand

From what I've read, this is an improvement from the first game in almost everything. I haven't played the first game, but this one was on this system and needed a new game to play, and definitely a solid game.
- Great music and usage of it. So many different styles of music blended into this game to each of the travelers. Also very well done on how each song varies in the day/night cycle. I've spent some time just listening to the song and listening the oppositive version in the day/night cycle. Plus the final battles theme song and how that blends in for each character. some of the best music i've heard in a video game in awhile
-Art/animation also very well done. great character design, and like how the main boss fights have the enemy be larger to show importance. I do wish they had more artwork in the game/character portraits because its so good
-battles are well done and I found to use most of the items (some games u rarely use items and just end up with useless stuff). Only some of the enemies did get somewhat repetitive though
-The voice acting is really good, with my favs probably being partitio and ochette
-Overall stories are well done, I think my ranking of them would be (partitio, ochette, hikari, casitti, agnea, tenemos, throne, osvald) reason for that is throne's last chapter I didn't care for at all and there wasn't much lead up for something like that, osvald monologues too much and his final chapter is honestly a let down as I thought that fight was too easy. Tenemos's story isn't bad but he can be annoying at times/too much monologuing. Agnea's story made me laugh and cheer for her at moments and I like her character overall. Casitti's story starts out slow and I really didn't like the beginning as she just MONOLOGUES and is bland, but gets really better as it goes on as you connect the dots, has a fun final boss fight, and generally how she's like the mother to the whole party. Hikari's story is just well done even if it's been kinda done before, and he has some of the best fights in the game. Ochette is very funny through the whole game and I like each chapter of her story. Partitio though he's the best, best voice acting, fun boss battles, and his story does help a lot of people in the game and you want him to succeed. plus he tries to stay positive and see the good in everyone.
-too many random battles
-you don't need to grind in this game which is great, but this game does feel too easy at times, maybe I would play this game again if they added a new game plus that makes the game somewhat harder.
-The game can be very long, even I don't really feel like finishing up the side stories to fight the final boss, but that's okay
-some of the chapters have some subpar writing (throne's last chapter was the worst one for me)
- some of the charact'er's day/night actions to interact with others are either way too useful or just pointless outside of specific moments in their story (like why use hikari's to pay for info when you can just use casitti's to get that info for free, same with why use temenos's if u can just use casitti), same for why use partitio to pay for stuff when you can just use throne to steal the items... that's where you can kind of metagame it way too easily and not really feel any pressure of doing so, because even if you fail too many times you just go to tavern and pay a small fee (the money is very easy to make especially if you have partitio as your main).
Overall though a solid 8/10 game for me, and well worth the playthrough and full price.… Expand
