An interesting cool idea that I feel would have served better if under a different name. Didn't really feel like a resident evil story. The plot gets very silly very fast and the gameplay scenarios felt sporadic. I feel a single setting (eg castle) would have been for more rewarding than this odd spread of areas and designs Overall a good title but left me wanting more.

The atmosphere is completely non existent and 90% of the game lacks any sort of tension. The plot and the dialogue are flat out laughable. The story, boss battles, and time spent at various locations feel rushed. The enemies remind me of characters from lord of the rings or dungeons and dragons. The gunplay is clunky and very similar to RE7, which does not translate well for this type of action focused gameplay. The game itself is not horrible, but it’s far from RE2 or RE7. Don’t expect a horror game if you give this one a go and make sure that you play on hardcore difficulty (standard difficulty was a breeze). The action focused direction gives me great concern for future releases and I will be tempering my expectations for the conclusion of this trilogy. Expand

I'm shocked Capcom felt confident to emulate a lot of RE4 but couldn't bring over the same satisfying combat as well; because the shooting in RE8 is pretty abysmal.

    - Movement is too slow and restrictive for a game that sometimes throws a handful of fast moving enemies that take up your entire screen.
    - FOV is too narrow to even get an idea whats happening around you most of the time.
    - Weapon sounds are underwhelming and lack punch.
    - Enemies have barely any hit reactions, so Its like I'm shooting with a pellet gun.
    - Didn't take the opportunity to add evasive moves, grab counters, melee attacks, etc to flesh out the combat potential.

I see no benefit to the first person view when it comes to the combat. The camera and movement are better suited for a slow paced horror game; with some enemies and arenas that would benefit if the combat was faster paced and snappy like action RE games. It just doesn't match well at all; Village is two types of games being forced into each other.

Even with the underwhelming combat, the middle section of the game is still great fun. I had a lot of enjoyment upgrading and getting most of the treasures. RE games shine when the player is left to their own pace. Little cutscenes, little dialogue, you are immersed in the gameplay loop and exploration. However it will probably take you about 8 hours to beat the game, so that middle section feels a bit too brief sadly; the game overall feels like it ended too quickly.

If I can sum up the experience it would be very fun in some places, but overall forgettable. Nothing really happens that's worth talking about. Story is lackluster, characters are underdeveloped/forgettable, music is serviceable, tone has no consistency, voice acting is hit or miss, combat lacks depth, and too many scripted parts for my liking.

If the combat was much more fleshed out, and if Village was a little longer to accommodate that, than maybe the gameplay would be able to support the game on its own.

I still wanna play more to see what the game offers, or at least to make the most out of the purchase. However the lack of depth in the gameplay and just thinking about replaying some of the slow portions sounds like a chore already.

RE Village doesn't know what it wants to be. Its a bootleg version of RE4 and its not exactly a great horror game either. It borrows from so many games that in the end it has little of its own identity.

If you insist on getting it, get it on sale.

The issue of the enemies is well achieved, but the difficulty is a topic to talk about, it costs you more to kill the lycanthropes than the daughters of the lady, the fight of the lady reminds me of the fight of Christ against the fly giant of resident evil 5, if it weren't for the characters, I wouldn't know that it is from the resident evil saga, I see it as just any horror game and the ending, well, each one with their own taste Finally to pass the time is a good game but it does not become a resident evil like its predecessors. The standard enemies are a huge improvement from 7’s molded as you actually gain from killing them as they drop loot necessary to make ammo, healing products and explosives. The villains are each interesting in their own right although I found moreau to be the comical intellectual stupid character who the group make fun of which is rather repetitive and who we literally got in 7 as Lucas. The negatives for me would be that the first area you go to other than the village it’s self is the gorgeous Castle that Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters inhabit I felt that the 3 other areas after this weren’t as good, 2 of them weren’t necessarily bad but no where near as interesting or creative as the first. I wasn’t a fan of Heisenbergs factory at all I found it very repetitive and mostly boring and more reminiscent of the boat section in 7 which I didn’t like either mostly for the same reasons. The boss battles where all intriguing but far too easy regardless of difficulty their patterns were very repetitive so therefore easy to figure out quickly. Overall I really enjoyed RE: Village enough to say it’s a good game but once again it has more than enough flaws to hurts its overall score. Expand

School trips to various eras of castles in varying states of repair mean that whenever I see one in a film or game it doesn't create any particularly eerie feelings for me. RE7 on the other hand with a decaying house in the swamps was horror territory right from the off. It's these tonal differences why I much preferred RE7. RE7 had a strong cast of antagonists that were a terrifying mix of body horror and insanity, mixed with the aforementioned setting and you had a really tense Survival horror game. RE8s Villains, by contrast, are much more Saturday Morning Cartoon like with their plans. We also have a mismatch of styles here from undead like creatures/Vampires, to werewolves, to dolls, to cyborgs, if anything it's a little too much and could have used a bit more focus.

All that said it is fun to play, the first 30-40 minutes is a little too much on rails as is the last hour or so, but the time spent in the village is pretty awesome. Exploring the Village is where the game is at its strongest and the way it opens up revealing more hidden secrets each time you circle back is always fun. The combat is pretty snappy, but against some larger enemies in enclosed spaces it can be awkward to position yourself whilst maintaining aim, that said I came into this off the back of Returnal which ties movement and aiming together perfectly, so it's not RE8s fault that it felt a bit clunkier by comparison.

I feel like I've been a little bit down on this game, but it is a lot of fun. It's nowhere near as tense or memorable as RE7, but if more tongue in cheek horror themes are your thing I wouldn't be surprised if you preferred this game to the previous entry. For me it was a fun game, but not a particularly memorable one. It is absolutely gorgeous at times though.

It wants to be a survival horror style RE, but there are a million ways to procure health and ammo, be it through any drops, crafting, or simply just buying them from the Duke. Not to mention your inventory case which has enough space to hold every weapon, bullet, and healing item under the sun, made even easier because treasure, key items, herbs and other crafting items don't take up space.

It wants to be RE4 as well, but never throws enough enemies at you at once to really take full advantage of the massive arsenal you amass, and as a result combat becomes rather unengaging before long. A problem that's compounded by the lack of enemy variety or variety in enemy encounters.

There are multiple areas that are on the weaker side, or just a slog to playthrough (especially on repeat playthroughs) such as the opening and it's unskippable 5 minute (at MINIMUM) forced walking section, and the 2nd and 3rd main areas. As a result, you get a game that will, for decent stretches of time, will border on uninteresting or boring.

As far as story goes, it's nothing special. It's nonsensical and the characters range from mildly interesting to completely forgettable. The cast is nowhere near as strong as the Baker's from 7.
Post game, you unlock the Mercenaries. It's decent enough but it's not as fun as the mercenaries from 4, 5, and 6. You also unlock Village of Shadows difficulty, which feels like it's super hard just for the sake of being super hard. Personally, I found no enjoyment in it.

Overall, this is not a bad game. It's just very mediocre.

The great villain of the game, extremely cartoonish and theatrical character. Connections to history that discourage fans of the original Playstation 1 versions.
Even the Beneviento section, which has a great deal of terror. But it is psychological terror, running away from what RE has always proposed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a huge RE Fan, Village is Fun, But A Huge Step Back From 7/2/3.

First, let’s start off with some pros:

    - Insane replayability. Many people weren’t a fan of RE3 Remake, but I was, and I am super glad to see the unlock system/shop make a return here.
    - Length of the game compared to 7. This game is definitely longer, and due to the “action” nature of the game, it makes replays of it a lot more fun than 7, as the second half of 7 is much less enjoyable than the first half.
    - The boss fights for a Resident Evil game are surprisingly solid (except for one), which is rare for the franchise. Especially the final boss, it truly felt like a climactic battle.
    - Mercenaries mode is back! I don’t really need to say anymore, this honestly should be a series staple, and I was very disappointed in it being absent in 7, 2, and 3 (3 especially, that is actually sinful).
    - Unlockables encourage Replayability.

Now let's start to get into what irks me about this entry in the franchise. Village very much takes inspiration from 4 (almost to a complete fault at times), and unfortunately 5, and 6. Here are some examples with regards to 4 (Spoilers Ahead):

    - Shortly after arriving in the Village, we are once again faced with yet another “Village” sequence from RE4 (which has already been used 5) where the protagonist has to fight off or survive against wave after wave of enemies. Once again, towards the end, here comes a big enemy with a hammer to chance you down, just like the Majini back in 5...
    - The lycan enemies look like wolves, but are actually just Ganados and Majini completely reskinned. They even hold weapons in a similar fashion.
    - There are multiple weapons in this game, but unlike 4, each new weapon is a direct upgrade of the previous one, so it makes little sense to bother using the merchant to upgrade your older one (unless you are low on Lei, the game’s currency).
    - There is yet another “Lake” sequence yet again, with a very similar enemy to 4, but this time, instead of being on a boat, you are instead traversing on foot through a flooded village in a heavily scripted sequence where dying is not even remotely a threat.
    - Later on in the game, the setting switches to a factory where enemies are mechanical abominations. Some of these enemies are straight up rips of Garridors from RE4, just without the difficulty or strength.

Now let us look at some other aspects of Village that fall short of the mark:

    - The boss fight with Heisenberg is just completely awful for how great of a character he was. It was Resident Evil 6 levels of awful. Not only is this a straight up Call of Duty sequence, but Heisenberg’s transformation is almost as terrible and unbelievable as the Derek Simmons T-rex from Resident Evil 6. Just a terrible fight all around honestly.
    - On the topic of fear, RE8 is not scary at all save for House Beneviento (which lasts all of 5 minutes after the initial fear wears off).
    - The lake section that was previously mentioned is almost entirely devoid of combat until the boss, which takes place directly after another sequence entirely devoid of combat.
    - Lack of puzzles for how huge the map is was a bit disappointing too. RE3 Remake had significantly less puzzles than 2 Remake, so to see 8 also drop the ball here is very disappointing.
    - Ethan Winters is an uninteresting protagonist. His line deliveries are awful, the emotion behind his voice isn’t there, and the fact we still don’t see his face is just awkward at this point. Leon had emotion, even with his worse lines
    - As much as I love Chris Redfield, he had absolutely no business being involved with this story (and his playable sequence was not particularly fun either, as it mimicked his and Piers’ gameplay from RE6). I understand that Chris obviously has a relationship with Ethan thanks to RE7, but the job and investigative efforts that Chris performed in 8 are much more applicable to Ada Wong’s skill set. Yes, that would’ve made 8 seem even more like RE4, but Ada is undeniably a much better fit here.
    - The story revelation towards the end regarding the BSAA are dangerously heading into Ja’vo RE6 territory.

As you can already tell, I wasn’t a huge fan of this entry, but regardless of its drawbacks, it still was fun to play, and the unlockables keep me coming back, so on that alone, I give this entry 7/10. I am still extremely worried about the future of this franchise after this game, and I really hope Capcom somehow sees my grievances to at least recognize some drawbacks of this critically acclaimed entry.

Starting from the best aspects, the work has an excellent artistic realization and a suggestive and intriguing setting, linked to the imagery of classic horror. However, it must be emphasized how what is visually striking is the complex, while if we focus on the details it denotes a lack of finishing that is sometimes annoying. The aesthetic aspect is very good, but nothing exceptional compared to what one is used to in other titles, this being a triple A title and as such it must be evaluated. The sound sector is good, however the music is devoid of originality and limp. Regarding the duration, I think it is very good since we are talking about a survival horror and an excessive length would have led to grouting. Excellent plot, not original but solid and well structured, very inspired, intriguing and full of functional and well integrated twists. The direction is average, the staging is sometimes very good, sometimes it drops, but it is never bad and the pace remains high for almost the entire adventure. The first concern concerns the gameplay. Despite being a survival horror and the first part follows that style, gradually a game play is intensified more, even at the greatest difficulties, to action, coming to be almost a first person shooter. This is also accentuated by a bland and overly mundane game design. The places are extremely not very complex, very linear and we almost proceed on autopilot; the puzzles are too easy, mundane and offer no real challenge. This leads to a flattening both of the progression, simple and linear, and of the satisfaction deriving from solving complex puzzles or the frustration of not knowing where to go, of getting lost in an unknown and hostile place, something that in that setting so characteristic of Europe. oriental would have been nice. This leads to the second perplexity. If the goal of a survival horror is, at least in experience, to provoke frustration, anxiety, fear, tension, estrangement, this video game, on the other hand, never manages to make these feelings feel, making it tasteless. The same enemies are not very incisive, perhaps because in excessive numbers, hence the action. Fewer enemies but with a better character design and a greater challenge in dealing with them would have helped. Finally, the villains. While they are certainly intriguing and sexually attractive, female lead characters are not only not dangerous, but they also fail to cause fear, anxiety or negative feelings towards them. To conclude, Residen Evil Village is still a good video game, capable of entertaining and with a story worthy of being told and lived, but it is certainly far from being what a survival horror should represent. Is extremely linear and I know that you may be confuse so let me explain, being linear is not a bad thing but it's bad for Resident Evil games, everything that you need to progress the story is given to you, the fist key (and key is code word for puzzle item, I don’t want to mention what they are for spoiler sake) is given to you after escaping lady Dimitrescu then all of the keys for the door puzzle are also given to you after every boss battle specially when after defeating one of the daughters they give you a fake key to replace the real key because if you try to leave the room with the real key the door closes and you need to replace the fake with the real to leave the room. In a good RE game you would have come across the room while exploring the castle, take the key, realized that the door closes and your stuck, put back the key, and looked for another key or a fake key or a way to solve the puzzle. what made RE games interesting was the way you can play the game at your own pace and solve the puzzle in the order in which you found the items by exploring. You are given a clear objective like in Resident Evil 1 (RE1) to find your friends in the mansion but the game did not tell you were and how, you needed to explore and figure things out or in Resident Evil 2 remake (RE2R) were you need to escape the police station, you explore and find a way out, but in RE8 things are just given to you, you don't explore lady Dimitrescu castle to find the keys, they just give them to you at the end of a boss fight or at the end of a scripted sequence (something you cannot avoided or change) . This removes the fun of finding new things and using your deductive skills to figure out where things go and what to do, RE8 fails on the gameplay par of exploration
    EXPLORING THE MAP
Is a major part of the RE games but RE8 gives you the illusion of exploration when there is nothing there. Exploration is rewarding the player for living the main area and looking for something new or useful outside the main quest, RE8 does not provide this , if you look at every map location in RE8 you will notice that every location in the map is a story section there is not location that you can explore or a new area that you haven’t being too during the story except for the docks, path to Heisenberg, and the musician house, but these are all in the story path too. There is even an achievement for completing the map but remember by the end of the game you have seen everything. the reason why exploration was important and fun in RE games was because 1. usefully items that may help you in the game or key side quest items that lead to good loot 2. the puzzle to solve and backtrack to previous locations to explore new area and 3. When you went out to explore there is always a chance that an enemy that you did not killed attacks you while exploring/backtracking. in RE1 you can miss getting the shotgun because you need a fake shotgun that is inside of a secret room which needs a special key to open but then you later find the shotgun so you have to replace it with the fake because of you don’t once you leave the room with the shotgun the roof caves in and you die, or in RE2 Remake where you can miss extra bag pack slots by not opening the safes or miss gun upgrades by not solving the puzzles, you can even miss an entire extra gun while being in the police station which in my fist playthroughs I did miss the gun but RE8 proves none of this risk reward exploration and the only thing you get for exploring is money, no items for future section, no special guns, just money for the Duke
    SURVIVAL HORROR
Inventory is fundamental to RE games but in village they miss the gameplay purposed of the inventory system. The inventory system lets you do is create tension and choice to the player on resource management, do I take more heling erbs but if I do Then I don't have amo or do I take a shotgun which takes up more space in my backpack or play it safe and leave that space empty for collecting items these create tension and decision making at the players playstyle and choice to survey but RE8 does not have this, it could all have being fixed if you did not put resources as a separate category as items because you can have unlimited herbs for crafting and still have space in your bag pack because it does not affect you bag pack space, I have never had to make the choice in RE8 to consume one of my herbs to make space or leave behind amo because my bag pack is full
FINAL VERTIC Resident Evil Village is not a bad game but it’s a bad Resident Evil game, you should play it at some point when the game is $40

I have recently played RE8 Village, and although I liked the game in several ways, there are other points that make me hate it quite a lot. I’m old enough to know about the former "Biohazard" first person shooting games and the not so bad "Umbrella Chronicles", which gave us another side of the story at Spencer's Mansion. Knowing all this I must say that having all the resources and technology from these days, why don’t give the player the choice to change their view? Why a first person camera?.

Ethan Winters is a faceless character that never makes you get into his story, looking for his disappeared girlfriend Mia. (RE7). The feel of that game isn’t the essence of Resident Evil, but that is another tale.

RE8 VILLAGE plot is in the air, playing with european myths and literature, vampires, werewolves, monsters from the lake, etc... and Chriss Redfield attached to the story in desperate intent to turn this into Resident Evil, sorry but I don’t bite it.

The main facts and several parts of the story seem to be inspired by SILENT HILL, a father who is looking for his daughter in the middle of a strange place surrounded by demon-like creatures, but in this case all without salt and pepper. Maybe you can't find the resemblance with the old KONAMI title, but the truth is that this plot is weak, and certainly isn’t polish.

The good stuff, all the artwork is fantastic, even addictive, like Lady Dimitrescu and her castle. The game is fun but is it really a Resident Evil game? .

I can't give it more than 5 it would be a treason to all that deep plots and amazing characters from the main RE franchise,

I'm also not a big fan of the one-tone color palette for the majority of the world, Exploring is ok, ultimately is rewarding enough, but feels borrowed from other games, and half- assed, especially the hunting part. The story was fine, minimalistic with a satisfying ending.
To end, all mechanics in the game is serviceable, but nothing surprises, or feels "next gen". This game just feels old, is the best way I can describe it. It's fine, but could've and should've been better.

Pushing you from one poor boss fight to another with nothing of substance in between. The castle was the only part that had any true feelings of tension. To much of village is spent in open areas with no feeling of being In danger. The game throws so much ammo at you that you can't possibly fail. Unfortunately for me the werewolves and vampires did not envoke any fear. All of the main villains are not well done. The sisters and the tall woman are killed of the first hour of the game. The beginning is extremely cutscene heavy for a solid hour and it makes the replayability less. The game is more silly than anything... The ending revelation was shocking and had a good connection to re7. All in all I recommend to Save your money and get re7 if you haven't played it as it's a much better horror game. Expand

I absolutely adore the Eastern European - Gothic Horror setting with the Vampires & Werewolves, it's excellent, but unfortunately the game doesn't make it justice, and as you progress the story, it transitions to Steampunk with Cyborgs which doesn't fit very well, it feels out of place. I have to say, the gameplay mechanics are better than I expected, the game is fun to play, but most of the enemies are bullet sponges, even the boss fights, and the game isn't scary at all, it feels more like an action shooter rather than a survival horror game, especially near the end. The characters are not very likeable except from some very few like Heisenberg, Lady Dimitrescu & the Dimitrescu Daughters, the Four Lords are overall intimidating but the game doesn't explore their backstories & doesn't explain their motivations very well, they needed significantly more screentime, because we barely learn anything about them. The writing is very amateurish & straight up bad, there aren't any peaks in the story, it's very short, personally it took me around 7 hours to finish it, and some areas should have been expanded, especially the castle. They could have divided the castle to many sections and the Dimitrescu Daughters needed way more screentime & importance to the plot, Moreau's section was just filler, the ending is very abrupt... it's as if the game was rushed at times. Lastly, the dialogue is very cheesy and sometimes the game doesn't take itself seriously, especially in the second half of the story, there are some facepalm worthy moments which take away the immersion completely. I really appreciate the effort that was put into the game though, the Dimitrescu Castle looks great (it's the best part of the game by far), there are many areas to explore, the environment looks really nice, the village is cool & there are many things you can do in it, decent amount of details here & there, I honestly had a lot of fun playing the game, it really is a very well made game after all. Nowhere near as good as RE VII, but not a trainwreck like VI. Feels like they tried to mix every RE ever into one game, so in the end they couldn't decide what kind of game it's gonna be. Expect a decent action game with a bit of suspense but almost no horror.

RE Village has awesome graphics, great sound design, a pretty good story and fantastic production value, but RE's game-play has never felt more barebones, it's puzzles simplistic and its horror elements diluted. If you enjoy movie games, this game is great. But If you prefer game-play oriented games, I would not recommend RE Village.

Weapons are upgradeable, exploration is rewarded with more coins or even equipment or upgrades. Enemy variety is ok, nothing spectacular but at least more than in RE2&3 R. Story is as every RE a mixture of over the top and your average horror clichee.
As almost every RE game 8 is no different in replayablitity. You unlock the mercs mode after finishing the main game and can buy weapons or infinite munition for challange points which you get after doing certain things ingame like finishing the game with knife only or find every collectible.
The puzzles are as flat as these from the remakes but resident evil is not a horror puzzle game since at least 6 so that´s that. My rating is a 7.5 out of 10 but i round it up since the game is at least worth a play trough.

I really enjoyed the gameplay, but I lacked emotional connection to the main character Ethan due to the first person camera angle and the unpolished story. It's a great game, just not a good resident evil game. The story had so much potential and Capcom took the lazy way out with most of it. I feel like Ozwald Spencer and the Umbrella connection could have been written better. Like why wasn't Lady D. some sort of "Perfect Tyrant" creation/inspiration? Something more substantive that linked back to the original games we all know and love. - The story is really bad even by RE standards , It doesn't feel like Resident Evil , Ethan is still in between of being a character like any other and being an avatar for the player thus making him nothing and the pacing is erratic thus villains don't get the necessary screen time to be more memorable like RE4 for example where they had the codec calls
    - The cinematic/scripted sequences hurt the game incredibly and strip control away from you constantly . Plus they make replaying the game a pain
    - Boss fights are for the most part pretty bad
    - The tight FOV from RE7 didn't gel well with the over the top action
    - It's never scary or tense
    - There is hardly any audible music in a series known for it's music
    - Some nods were okay but the boulder thing was cringe . It was Capcom's "How do you do fellow kids" moment

The overwhelmingly positive reception and the ending implications of this game leave me worried for the conclusion of the trilogy which to me might be even weaker than the RE4 to RE6 one . Village is not a bad game but merely an average one that tried to please everybody and ended up being passable in everything that it attempted to do

She is the selling point and goes up and down on 9gag. Nude mods and memes sell this game.

The rest is weak action horror with a few pretty parts. Nothing more. 6/10

O começo é excelente, mas o restante do jogo é ridiculamente ruim. Plot twists desnecessários, decisões erradas, protagonista continuou fraco.

Nowhere near as good as Dead Space or Outlast but a decent action game overall. It's still not as good as RE 7 which was creepier and made more sense. One minute we're fighting werewolves, bats and Dark Souls inspired zombies to mechanical, borg like machines and then back in tentacles and sludge territory (like that hasn't been done a million times over in games).

The level designs are for the most part ok and atmospheric but boxy. Massive let down if you're expecting a truly creepy and enthralling horror epic however. It fails to be that. Certain areas and bosses are totally lackluster (the puppet level comes to mind. What a let down!) and the Merman, Lovecraft level which was totally just a run through with a boss chasing you. All empty and boring stretches of nothing. While action packed if you like FPS and definitely taking a more RE5 approach, it's tedious right from the start once you realize the extremely small amount of effort Capcom put into this.

Capcom once again just makes another over the top and way over staying it's welcome sort of game. Went on for too long in my opinion which is mainly the fault of the boring and slow cutscenes. Ethan Winters is a boring character. The dialogue is cheesy and lame. The plot is predictable and the ending a let down.

Wait for a discount to play this and wait for real horror developers to release something more worthy of being a horror title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You can call me a miserable, an immature whiner, but the game would be much better for me if it had a different ending, because i'm not a huge fan of the "bittersweet" ones. Besides, Ethan Winters was my absolute favourite character since his debut in 2017. You know the feeling you get when you realize that something or somebody you're so attached to is now gone forever. It hurts me so much and I still can't get over it. Just bring Ethan back for one more time as a side character, Capcom, I'm begging you! Seriously, even though he's just a fictional character and, according to a game plot, was not even a human being for like his last three years, he DESERVES the better treatment from both players/fans and developers.
Aside from that, RE Village seemed to me running short on content, despite the fact that it has the longer campaign (than RE7), some good replayability + the mercenaries mode. The game's amount of plot and lore wasn't enough for me. Still waiting for a sequel though.
And about the gameplay. It's a pretty good amalgam of RE7 and RE4 gameplay mechanics, but the whole merchant system still bothers me. It encourages you to confront and even pursue your enemies rather than run away from them and save your supplies. Imo, it's fun to play, but it doesn't really match the original survival horror concept. The Chris' part/gameplay doesn't include the merchant at all but it's even more "actiony" instead.
I also have complaints about the game optimization (PC/Steam version). No matter how low I set the graphics quality, the game still suffers from significant frame drops, especially when I encouter one of the Dimitrescu daughters or get close to a group of lycans. Even 30fps lock doesn't always save the day. MAYBE my PC is the problem but i'm not quite sure.

I think it's worth to play. But try not to take it all too much to heart like I did.

It felt like being on a really fancy ride that only went one speed if that makes sense? A lot of style and not so much substance. I wish they would have chosen one or two sections and fleshed them out more - instead, they focused on 4+ sections and the end result just felt a bit all over the place. Plus, it is CAMPY - I know, it’s resident evil, but usually these games serve you camp with a dose of atmosphere. This one was just straight camp and trying too hard to shock the viewer.
On a positive note, the game is gorgeous. One of the best current gen games I’ve played. Also, it is totally playable and it’s not unfun, it just really is an action game through and through, there is zero tension/horror, and I was not really expecting that.

A decent entry in the series that is lacking in genuine horror for the most part and instead relies on middling gun play as it corrals you around an incredibly small game world from one “boss fight” to the next. This entry like the last suffers from its need to be tied to the broader story of the series which (lets be honest) has become a saltire of itself.

Expand

This is my very first Resident Evil game, and while I think that it's an enjoyable game for newcomers and a pretty good Resident Evil game for the fans, from my perspective the game itself has some major flaws.

It mostly suffers from pacing issues, character development and it feels like it doesn't know what it wants to be, it mixes action and horror in such a bizarre way, but it's not a good action game nor a good horror game either.

I absolutely adore the Eastern European/Gothic Horror setting with the vampires and the werewolves, it's excellent. Most areas are incredibly detailed, the atmosphere is disturbing, and the buildings look very beautiful.

I have to say, the gameplay mechanics are better than I expected, the game is fun to play but most of the enemies are bullet sponges, especially the boss fights. The guns feel and sound satisfying, and there is a good variety of tools to use.

Ι found most of the characters to be quite annoying, except from Heisenberg, Lady Dimitrescu and the Dimitrescu Daughters, which I liked a lot.
The Four Lords are overall intimidating and pretty much the highlight of the game, even though some of them needed more screentime or significance to the plot.

The writing is very amateurish and straight up bad, there aren't any peaks in the story and it's very short, personally it took me around 7 hours to finish it, and I think some areas should have been expanded, especially the castle.

Lastly, the dialogue is very cheesy and sometimes the game doesn't take itself seriously, specifically in the second half of the story, there are some facepalm-worthy moments that take away the immersion completely.

I really appreciate the effort that was put into the game though, the Dimitrescu Castle looks great (it's the best part of the game by far), there are many areas to explore, the environment looks really nice, the village is cool and there are many things you can do in it, decent amount of details here and there, I honestly had a lot of fun playing the game, it really is a well crafted game after all.

    Final Rating: "Decent" ~ 6/10.

Similarly to Resident Evil 4 back in the day, Village will attract a new generation of players and redefine the franchise for the modern age. I guess it’s time to stop looking back and counting on the series to return to its roots. Capcom is well aware of those roots and willingly draws from them to create something new but still infused with Resident Evil’s spirit. Village is not perfect, but neither was RE4, and once again it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the flaws, because overall it’s an amazing game. [07/2021, p.56]

Resident Evil Village feels like such a culmination. Bringing together elements from the franchise all the way up to now and crafting what looks to be the next step of survival horror, it embraces every aspect of the franchise. While the insidious dread of Resident Evil VII is missing, there are still plenty of scares. The monster designs are fantastic, from the generations undead, the fury of the Lupine beasts, to the towering monstrosities. It's well worth delving into the concept art and 3D models to enjoy them fully. The story is just the right amount of silly with the terrifying, and the odd dash of the surreal. The combat is smooth and fluid, best evidenced in the addictive Mercenaries mode. All of these elements added together make quite possibly the best Resident Evil to date, and a foundation for a fresh new generation of terror.

RE: Village is a mixture of almost all previous Resident Evil elements, making the most of both survival horror and puzzle intensity, but with the primary stage being left for the more action-like nature of Resident Evil 4. It has some great story moments, sprinkled with a few lacklustre characters that are still overshadowed by its most notable characteristic – most detailed environment to date.
