Although the sadistically-steep challenge will crush anyone expecting a simple platformer, players who press on into the meatgrinder that is 1001 Spikes will find a top-tier production worthy of respect despite the fact that it makes absolutely no allowances for anything less than perfection.

1001 Spikes will frustrate, but its retro difficulty is worthy of a seasoned player's time.

It may make you curse, snap a controller in half and throw your handheld out a window, but that's all natural. That's just how things used to be. A glorious time, indeed.

1001 Spikes definitely feels much more like a genuine game from the 8-bit era. By this, I mean that I could totally imagine playing this on the NES. The graphics, the music, the way the (surprisingly deep, plotwise) cutscenes are animated: all of them are straight out of 1988 or so, to the point that I could get in a time machine, show the game to 8-year-old me, and have 1988-Matthew think the game was just like everything else he/I was playing at the time.

Ignore the "1" score from the (currently only) other reviewer.

The game is a throwback to 80's games, in other words, hard and unforgiving.

The game is a throwback to 80's games, in other words, hard and unforgiving. Believe me, I was there (in the 80's) playing games, and throwing my NES controller daily. You should have seen the wooden cabinet I had my TV on... full of "NES-controller-corner" holes.

This game will make you want to do that too... only now you have a PS Vita, which is hardly indestructible like the NES controller was. I suggest you don't throw it.

1001 Spikes frustrates the hell out of you, but also makes you say, "Just one more time," the true sign of a fun and addictive game.

The graphics are SUPER dated, like the 80's. The music even more so. The difficulty is what keeps you coming back. I swear, I would get stuck trying to get by some booby-trap, then I would get past it, only to die "2 squares" later (anyone who played in the 80's will know what I mean by squares). Be forewarned, there are traps EVERYWHERE in this game! Hardly a safe spot to stand. And it's all timed perfectly to screw up your run!
