Explicit narrative aside, I found Stranger of Sword City to be a real winner of a dungeon crawler.
If you are looking for a challenging RPG that gives you plenty of options, then give Stranger of Sword City a good look.

Classic RPG adventure with random encounters, first person perspective and lots of dungeons. A real challenge for long term users.
Stranger of Sword City is a great first-person dungeon crawler for the Vita. Although marred by some annoyances, it is definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the genre.
Stranger of Sword City is a solid dungeon Japanese role-playing game devoid of any surprises.
A title aimed at a very specific audience that will find a challenge that throw hours thanks to turn-based combat system and its history.
I've enjoyed a number of dungeon crawlers over the years, but never have I felt compelled to go back and experience the earliest renditions of the type. Stranger of Sword City gave me some uncomfortable flashbacks to The Dark Spire while I played it, and one deliberately-archaic title in that mold was plenty to last me a very long time.
