I realize that visual novels have a hard time getting the attention of anyone outside of a very specific niche, so raving about VA-11 HALL-A probably won’t mean much to most. At the same time, however, if any visual novel could appeal to people who don’t usually have time for the genre, it’s this one. It’s an innovative approach to a genre that too easily falls into ruts, and it’s well worth the time of anyone looking for something a little different.

VA-11 HALL-A is a brilliant point and drink adventure game with memorable characters, a superb soundtrack, and some of the best writing out there that has found a new home on the Vita.

VA-11 HALL-A is a very good visual novel, with strong themes, despite some problems due to its genre. If you like reading, VA-AA HALL-A is a must have.

VA-11 HALL-A is a game best enjoyed in short bursts, when a player wants to relax with a title that makes few demands and offers pleasant company. Though it lacks the dramatic heft to propel it into the upper tiers of videogame storytelling, it doesn’t really aspire for such lofty goals and avoids the pretension that such titles occasionally evince. Much like a comfy bar in real life, it’s a good place to visit, but no one needs to stay for long.

The lack of an engaging drama or choice means this one isn't so much a digital page-turner but best enjoyed at your leisure, ideally with a nice cool drink to hand. [Issue#150, p.88]

Va-11 Hall-a takes you directly into its atmosphere, never really showing the different choices of the game unlike a classic visual-novel. WeVa-11 Hall-a takes you directly into its atmosphere, never really showing the different choices of the game unlike a classic visual-novel. We regret that there is not more, because the universe is shouting coherence and realism. It's a great great game in which I took a huge pleasure playing Jill's day job back from mine. Expand

This is a visual novel that has a strong deviant-art—anime-conventioner—somber vibe, and no choice of what your depressed character says. TheThis is a visual novel that has a strong deviant-art—anime-conventioner—somber vibe, and no choice of what your depressed character says. The choice of what drink you make effects dialogue and story slightly, though you never notice that payoff when you play, you have to look up what would happen with different drinks to feel like you had any effect. One character will only open up to you if you serve this one type of drink he doesn’t order, and there’s no knowing that without a guide. I stalled out. The art style is nice though. Expand
